Superhero Style: See What All the Celebs Wore to Comic-Con

Some of Hollywood’s brightest and most stylish stars invaded San Diego over the weekend for Comic-Con. And while the convention regularly plays host to comic book and movie fans who dress up like their favorite fantasy characters, it’s also home to some serious fashion plates. All eyes were on Hailee Steinfeld when she wore a Fall 2013 Kenzo dress, a red creation covered in an ocular motif, at an event for fans of her movie Ender’s Game. True Blood‘s Anna Paquin wore a not-so-basic black ensemble to sign autographs, and Zoe Saldana attended a press event for Marvel Studios wearing a stunning blue jumpsuit.

SAN DIEGO — Thor’s evil brother, Loki, took over the Marvel Studios presentation at Comic-Con on Saturday.

Lights flashed inside the San Diego Convention Center’s largest exhibition hall, and Tom Hiddleston, dressed as Loki, commanded the stage. He called Hall H “a meager palace of Midgard” before showing footage from “Thor: The Dark World.”

Winter Soldier Footage Reaction

At the Marvel panel at Comic-Con this evening, we got to see Captain America put his Super Soldier skills to work, big time. But watch out — some spoilers for Winter Soldier follow.

Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, introduced the cast of the film — Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Frank Grillo, Cobie Smulders, and Emily VanCamp, plus directors Anthony and Joe Russo — before showing a sizzle reel that knocked the crowd’s socks off. It also knocked a bunch of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents on their asses, as a matter of fact.

The first portion of the reel features Cap getting into an elevator at what appears to be S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters. He’s in his full S.H.I.E.L.D. style uniform, and as other agents board the elevator at different floors, Cap notices one guy sweating, another’s hand sort of hanging near his holster, and so on. Something is wrong, and after the lift is full of agents (including Frank Grillo’s Crossbones), he says, “Before we do this, does anyone want to get out?” Then a full-on fight breaks out, with Cap greatly outnumbered and seemingly beaten from the moment it starts — headlocked, pinned, and getting hit with electrically charged stun sticks. One of his hands is pinned to the wall by a magnetic handcuff, but Cap still fights off his attackers with his remaining available hand. It’s all quickly cut and edgy type stuff, less superhero-ish than Bourne.

Slowly, Walt Disney is reuniting Marvel heroes under one roof. The latest to rejoin? Daredevil, a blind vigilante whose other senses are enhanced to a superhuman degree. Ben Affleck played the title character in a 2003 feature film that failed to meet heightened expectations.

Newsarama confirmed the shift in an interview with Marvel Studios President of Production Kevin Feige earlier this week.

Efforts to reboot the franchise in later years failed for unspecified reasons. Finally, in October, News Corp.‘s 21st Century Fox returned the rights to Marvel Studios when a deal with would-be director Joe Carnahan fell through.

Here’s a closer look at what might have been:

Now Disney is in control, and that’s good news for shareholders who’ve seen what Marvel can do when it has creative control of its own properties. I’d love to see Carnahan make a noir film starring Daredevil — something reminiscent of how writer-artist Frank Miller reinvented the character in the 1980s.

Miller gave DD a sharper edge. He also introduced the assassin Elektra as a love interest, subsequently played by Jennifer Garner in the 2003 film and a 2005 spinoff that bombed at the box office. The failures apparently made Fox executives gun-shy despite the source material.

Big parts of the Marvel Universe remain in outside hands. For example, Fox still has comprehensive film rights to the mutant heroes known as the X-Men as well as the Fantastic Four, a superhero family that’s seen action twice on the big screen in recent years while helping to inspire the Pixar Studios hit The Incredibles.

Sony , meanwhile, controls the rights to live-action Spider-Man films. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is filming now and due in U.S. theaters on May 2, 2014.

Daredevil isn’t big enough to fill the void left by the X-Men, Spidey, and the FF. But then again, neither was Iron Man in 2008. Robert Downey Jr. has since made that character bigger than both Batman and Superman when it comes to big-screen earnings.

Does Disney have what it takes to transform Daredevil similarly? Finally, we’ll get to find out.

A new rumor claims that Evil Dead director Fede Alavarez and screenwriter Rodo Sayagues are up for Marvel’s Doctor Strange movie.

Latino-Review‘s sources suggest that the duo are being eyed for a Marvel movie, with the safe money being on the long-gestating Doctor Strange film, a personal favorite of Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige. It’s reportedly one of the studio’s Phase Three titles for release sometime in 2015 or after.

Time to Get Excited for Marvel Phase Two

I don’t mind admitting when I’m wrong.

A few years ago, even before my time at IGN, I was writing about my concern over Marvel’s shared universe concept. How planning something as massive as The Avengers, which depended almost entirely on other movies that hadn’t been released yet, was a huge risk.

But as each movie came out and destroyed the box office, I became suspicious that my concerns were all for nothing. And on May 4, 2012, when The Avengers finally released, those suspicions were confirmed.

With what they’ve accomplished, it would be ridiculously easy for Marvel to sit back and churn out sequel after sequel through the usual Hollywood meat grinder. While we’re obviously getting direct sequels with things like Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World, there’s a very conscious effort from Marvel Studios not to rest on their laurels as they continue to try and push the limits of what can be achieved in blockbuster cinema.

China to Get Its Own Version of Iron Man 3

The Chinese release date for Iron Man 3 hasn’t been set yet, but Marvel Studios and DMG have announced that they will release a special China-only version of the superhero movie there.

In a joint statement, Marvel and DMG said: “While Marvel and DMG have decided not to apply for co-production status in China, the film includes significant Chinese elements. Renowned Chinese actor Wang Xueqi will appear in both the studio’s Chinese version of the film and in its international and domestic US version. Both versions of the film include Iron Man 3 footage filmed in Beijing in December.”

Product placement in movies is big business, since nothing sells goods like more eyes seeing them. This holds true regardless of the product, which is why automakers are scrambling to get their wares up on the big screen, next to soft drinks and portable electronics.

If you saw The Avengers, which also featured the Tony Stark / Iron Man character, you know that Acura-branded vehicles were prevalent throughout the film. The latest Die Hard movie, A Good Day To Die Hard, was very close to an infomercial for Mercedes-Benz, as some 14 different three-pointed-star models were used in filming.

Audi had something of a minor role in earlier Iron Man films, and it looks like the four-ring brand will be back in Iron Man 3. Tony Stark (or Robert Downey Jr., playing the character) is seen behind the wheel of an Audi R8 e-tron, while his significant other Pepper Potts (played by Gwyneth Paltrow) drives an Audi S7 Sportback.

As far as we know, that’s about it for Audi product placements in the film, which promises to be even darker than the first two installments. Just as in the first two films, Tony Stark faces near-insurmountable obstacles on his quest to lead a semi-normal life, and Marvel Studios promises an answer to the question, “does the man make the suit, or does the suit make the man?”

X-Men's Matthew Vaughn to Produce FF Reboot

Mark Millar, comics scribe and overseer of all things Marvel for Fox these days, has just revealed on Twitter that none other than X-Men: First Class director Matthew Vaughn is joining the studio’s Fantastic Four reboot as a producer. Here’s the full text of the tweet:

“Just off the phone with Fox and some excellent news – Matthew Vaughn is producing Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four reboot!”

Surely we have to look at this as good news for the Fantastic Four project, considering how successful First Class was. It’s also an interesting development when one considers that Vaughn dropped out of the X-Men sequel Days of Future Past back in October (only to be replaced by original X-director Bryan Singer). It would seem that there’s no ill will between parties after that decision, and really, if Fox is looking to build a “cohesive universe” like Marvel Studios has with their superhero films, they could definitely use a talent like Vaughn to help steer that vision.

Sony Sticks with Starz Through 2021 (SNE, STRZB, NFLX, DIS, LMCA)

A division of Sony Corp. (NYSE: SNE) and Starz (NASDAQ: STRZB) have extended a multi-year agreement under which Starz will remain the exclusive first-run TV outlet for new movies from Sony. The deal will runs through 2012, replacing a prior agreement that would have expired in 2016.

In December, Netflix Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX) signed a deal with The Walt Disney Co. (NYSE: DIS), outbidding Starz and its sister Encore channels which were still owned at the time by Liberty Media Corp. (NASDAQ: LMCA). There’s no indication that Netflix was in the running for a deal with Sony, but it would be surprising if the streaming video purveyor hadn’t at least made some initial inquiries.

The Netflix deal with Disney starts in 2016, after Disney’s current contract with Starz expires. Netflix is thought to be paying about $300 million annually for the exclusive streaming rights to films from Lucasfilm’s Star Wars franchise, Pixar Animation Studios, and Marvel Studios among others. Starz had to counter and the deal with Sony is the response.

Maybe Netflix was never in contention or maybe the company just didn’t want to add another hundred million or so to its future financial commitments. The company needs to add about 3.7 million subscribers between now and 2016 to pay for the Disney deal without raising its monthly subscription rate.

Netflix shares are getting a shave today, down about 2.4% at $176.70 after a two-and-a-half week run of nearly daily 52-week highs.

How Will Hulk Evolve in Marvel's Phase 3 Movies?

Marvel Studios just wrapped up its slate of “Phase 1” superhero movies with the release of The Avengers last year. This year, Iron Man 3 will officially kick off Phase 2 and the build-up to Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014. It may seem silly at this early stage for fans to be speculating on the lineup for Phase 3, but when has the Internet ever been afraid to rumor monger? Last week we caught wind of an interesting rumor regarding the future of Hulk in Marvel Studios‘ film projects. According to Latino Review, The Avengers 2 will conclude with Hulk being banished into space, thereby setting the stage for a Planet Hulk movie and an Avengers 3 that will adapt the events of the World War Hulk storyline.

Rumors About Marvel's Phase 3 Movies

The rumor mill has hulked out over Marvel Studios‘ Phase 3 movie slate.

The report comes via Latino-Review and should the rumors pan out (they do have a sweet track record) then consider these pretty giant SPOILERS AHEAD.

Like, seriously, don’t read any further if you don’t want to know.

You’re really going to go through with this, aren’t you?

OK, well, we warned you.

According to Latino-Review, Marvel’s The Avengers 2 will see Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk shipped off Earth by the MCU’s (Marvel Cinematic Universe) version of the Illuminati. That means one of Marvel’s Phase 3 movies would be a live-action Planet Hulk film. (Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige recently revealed that Ant-Man and Doctor Strange would also be Phase 3 movies.)

New Thor: The Dark World Details Revealed

There’s no question that Thor was one of the tougher nuts to crack in Marvel’s Phase One slate of films. But thanks to both Chris Hemsworth‘s dedicated performance and Kenneth Branagh‘s classy direction, the first Thor movie ended up being the surprise hit of the studio’s first round of Avenger movies.

But now with Game of Thrones’ Alan Taylor taking up the Asgardian reins for Thor: The Dark World, one can’t help but wonder what’s in store of the God of Thunder and his cherished home world.

“By bringing director Alan Taylor into the mix, with his expertise on The Sopranos, Mad Men and Game of Thrones, we came up with a take that allows us to get more into the nooks and crannies of Asgard and its people,” Marvel Studios executive producer Craig Kyle told Empire Magazine. “We spend more time on the ground with the commoners, as opposed to in the palace.”

Guardians of the Galaxy: The Cosmic Avengers

Among many other accomplishments during their tenure as stewards of Marvel’s cosmic franchises, Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning plucked the Guardians of the Galaxy out of obscurity and revamped them into a contemporary Marvel team characterized by equal parts adventure, drama, comedy, and talking space critters. Their take on the Guardians has proven very influential. The team is appearing in several of Marvel’s animated TV series and will be starring in a live-action Marvel Studios film next year.

Clearly, the time is ripe to bring the characters back to the forefront of Marvel’s comic universe. This time, it’s writer Brian Michael Bendis who will be chronicling the adventures of Star-Lord and the gang. Readers already got a taste of what Bendis has in store for the Guardians in Bendis’ Avengers Assemble storyline last year. Now he and artist Steve McNiven are kicking off a new Guardians of the Galaxy ongoing series as part of Marvel NOW!

What We Want From del Toro's Dark Universe

A couple of months ago, rumors began swirling that Guillermo del Toro was planning a movie set in the DC Universe called Heaven Sent that would pair a number of supernatural heroes like John Constantine, Zatanna, Deadman, and Swamp Thing together. Unfortunately, del Toro’s name tends to find itself attached to a number of promising projects that never come to fruition (i.e. – At the Mountains of Madness).

Luckily, DC fans were given new reason to be hopeful this week. As del Toro told IGN yesterday, he really is planning a supernatural DC movie, and its working title is now Dark Universe. He’s currently writing a plot outline that another mystery writer will expand into a full script. But with Warners still catching up to Marvel Studios in terms of big-budget superhero blockbusters, and with many of their future movie plans remaining murky, can a movie like Dark Universe find the footing it needs? Is this a recipe for cinematic success, or is it doomed to sink into development hell? We can’t say, but we have some suggestions as to how del Toro and his collaborators can make the most out of this unique venture into the DC Universe.
