OK to back-feed old fuse box during renovation?

By guy48065

My cottage has 2 old fuseboxes, each with 4 fuses and 2 pull-out 220 blocks. 1st box is connected to the meter right behind it and the 2nd is in a newer addition, supplied by the feed-thru terminals (if that’s what their called) on the 1st box. I’m going to be moving the meter location to near the 2nd fusebox and will soon be replacing both with a new breaker panel. During the interim so I can have power is it OK to connect the meter to the 2nd box feed-thru bus to back-feed the circuits on the 1st box? I’m not sure “back-feed” is accurate since the In & Out terminals are directly attached to the busses.
I know it’s not code but what are you allowed to get away with during the renovation, until final inspection?

My worry is the utility company might not want to connect to the new meter location if it’s wired to temporary panels. Then I’d be stuck in the middle with no meter in the original location, and no source of power.

How Does This Work, Obama To Cut Business Taxes By Increasing Business Tax Revenues

By Tim Worstall, Contributor President Obama is giving a speech today in which he’ll propose a grand bargain to get America  working again. Sounds like a good idea so what’s the meat of it? Amazingly, it seems that the President is going to propose lowering business taxation while at the same time raising the amount of revenue coming from business taxation. Now if this was with reference to the Laffer Curve or one of the other theories about the undesirability of corporate and capital taxation in general (such as those of the Nobel Laureate Sir John Mirrlees) then it might not only be a plan but a good one. Unfortunately that doesn’t seem to be what is on offer. Obama long has called for a cut in corporate tax rates, but previously insisted such business tax reform be coupled with an individual tax overhaul. He’s dropping that demand and says instead that he’s open to the corporate tax cut that that businesses crave. OK, cutting the corporate tax rate, that’s a good idea. The statutory rate in the US is well above world and OECD average and can, depending upon how you want to look at it, be described as the world’s highest. But he wants it to be coupled with a significant investment on some sort of job creation program, such as manufacturing, infrastructure or community colleges. That will of course require some new amount of revenue. And even those various theories that say that a low or lower corporate tax rate will indeed grow the economy faster, thus in time producing higher tax revenue, those theories do say that this will take some time. So, in the short term, where are those extra revenues going to come from? The officials said money to pay for the jobs creation would come from a one-time revenue boost from measures such as changing depreciation rules or having a one-time fee on earnings held overseas. Either or both of those mean business paying more in tax than they do currently. And the extra “one-time boost” to revenues will necessarily be the extra amount that businesses will be paying in the future under this new proposal. …read more

How Obama Truly Was Like Trayvon Martin

By Cliff Kincaid

Trayvon Martin SC How Obama Truly Was Like Trayvon Martin

The Huffington Post has perfected the smear technique of expressing shock and anger at things that conservatives say which make complete sense and are factually based. “Hannity’s Awful Reaction To Obama’s Trayvon Martin Comments” was the headline over Fox News host Sean Hannity’s reaction to President Obama comparing himself to Trayvon Martin. Hannity said he wasn’t sure how to interpret Obama’s remarks because “he was part of the Choom Gang and he smoked pot and he did a little blow” and “we know that Trayvon had been smoking pot that night.”

Obama, of course, was not deliberately comparing himself to Martin because of their common interest in smoking dope. But the comparison by Hannity was not unreasonable, since Obama was in fact a heavy dope smoker, a member of what his biographer David Maraniss called the Choom Gang; and Martin was smoking dope before he was killed by George Zimmerman following a violent confrontation. Obama had also admitted doing cocaine, or “blow.”

It was an opportunity for Obama to say something important, such as that young blacks should avoid the drugs that got Martin into trouble, and that black parents should strive to keep their children out of trouble. Instead, Obama harped on racism.

The alleged “awful reaction” of Hannity would only be awful if Hannity had said something about Obama and Martin that was not true. But it is true and worthy of comment because of the effect that marijuana may have had on Martin the night he was killed. The subject came up during the Zimmerman trial.

The influence of marijuana in the Martin-Zimmerman confrontation has taken on more significance in the wake of the exchange that CNN’s Piers Morgan had with Martin’s friend, Rachel Jeantel:

Morgan: What about drugs?

Jeantel: Drugs. OK, weed, marijuana. In my area, we say weed. My area, we—for Trayvon, I can explain one thing, weed don’t do make him go crazy, it just make him go hungry.

Morgan: But he did—

(Laughter)

Jeantel: Like it’s the best thing I can say. It made him hungry.

Morgan: Did he take a lot of weed?

Jeantel: No.

Morgan: How much would you say?

Jeantel: Like twice a week.

Morgan: Twice a week?

Jeantel: Yes.

Morgan: Is that normal for teenagers in your community?

Jeantel: Yes. Real normal.

Writing in The New York Times on July 11 under the headline “Reefer Madness, an Unfortunate Redux,” a professor named Carl L. Hart ridiculed the idea that Trayvon Martin was aggressive and paranoid from smoking marijuana, and that his marijuana use led him to attack George Zimmerman. Hart, an associate professor of psychology at Columbia University, claimed there wasn’t enough dope in Martin’s system to affect his behavior.

But marijuana can have lasting effects on the brain, depending on how much he had been smoking and for how long. During the trial, Shiping Bao, the medical examiner who autopsied Trayvon Martin, testified that marijuana “could have” altered Martin’s mind and body the night he died.

A pro-marijuana website, “The Weedblog,” also ridiculed “the pot made him do it” line of attack on Martin. …read more

How to exit a script with error ?

Hi,

I have a script ABC which calls another script XYZ. Function of XYZ is to ftp a file from one server to another.

code for ABC:

Code:

#!/bin/ksh
PATH=/usr/bin

home/user/xyz "$@"

exit $?
~

code for xyz:

Code:

#!/bin/ksh
HOSTNAME=$1
SRCNAME=$2
DSTNAME=$3

### This file holds the outget of the FTP commands for success checking
FTPCHK=/tmp/ftpchk.$$
#touch $FTPCHK
echo "" > $FTPCHK

SRCFILE=$SRCNAME

DSTFILE=$DSTNAME

echo Source Host: $HOSTNAME
echo Source File Name: $SRCFILE
echo Destination File: $DSTFILE

echo `date` Beginning FTP download...

CHK4=`grep -ic "226 File send OK." $FTPCHK`

### In NT, There should transmissions complete:
### One for the data transfer,
### One for the nlist

if [ $CHK1 -eq 2 ] || [ $CHK2 -eq 2 ] || [ $CHK1 -eq 1 -a $CHK2 -eq 1 ] || [ $CHK3 -eq 2 ] || [ $CHK4 -eq 1 ]; then

date
ls -al ${DSTFILE}

rm $FTPCHK

echo '---------------------------------------------------------------------'

exit $RC

In script XYZ, I am trying to ftp a file. So during ftp , whenever it shows that space is less than size of file, it should ftp the partial according to the available space and prompt a message about it and also prompt a message to outer script that inner script could not complete successfully. Hence resulting in the failure of outer script, due to partial ftp of file.

Also please post the comments about the each step of script to explain what is happening in that step. Thanks a lot in advance.

hot water heater control valve problems

By rmwolfpac

HELP….I can’t take the cold water anymore. I am a homeowner but general contractor. I have a 10 year old AO Smith Promax 74 gallon water heater with Honeywell smartvalve controller. (I hope it was OK to use the manufacturers name)

Initial symptom… blower would come on, igniter would light, gas would come on then in 2 seconds flame would burn out. Error message on valve said to replace the smartvalve

I replaced the smartvalve at a cost of $200. Hooked it up now get this…

blower comes on, igniter starts to light, then blower shuts off and I get 3 flashes of the error light, which means airflow proving switch or obstruction in the airflow of some sort.

I replaced pressure switch…didn’t help. I took off blower motor, made sure vent was open…did not help. I have had 3 plumbers look at it, and they all say the valve has to be bad. I don’t think so though…somehow the smartvalve is being told to shut down once the valve is told to open the gas to the igniter.

Any thoughts? PLEASE HELP

Ron

George Miller Criticizes House Republicans Over Farm Subsidies

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Rep. George Miller (D-Calif.) chastised Republicans in a Monday report over their decision to forfeit nutrition programs, while approving farm subsidies from which they benefit.

Fourteen Republican members of Congress that voted in favor of farm subsidies have received a joint total of $7.2 million in such benefits since 1995, the report reads. Additionally, Republican representatives holding a total net worth of up to $124.5 million “personally benefit” from the farm subsidies for which they voted, the report claims.

“It’s outrageous that some members of Congress feel it is OK to vote for their own taxpayer subsidies but against critical nutrition assistance for 47 million Americans,” Miller told Politico. “It’s bad enough that the House of Representatives didn’t pass a farm bill that included authorization for sorely needed nutrition programs, but to see members of Congress approving their own benefits at the expense of the working poor is a new low, even for this Congress.”

Wire for sub-panel

By jnnewton

I need to add a sub panel in my attached garage. The reason being that I’m out of breaker slots on my main 200A panel due to the fact that I currently have 6 circuits running to the garage 2x 30A 115 for the heaters (4 heaters @ 12.5A), 2 115 for two sets of outlets (so i can run the bandsaw while using other tools without blowing a breaker), 1 for the AC, 1 for 230VAC (mill). I need to add two more, and one in the basement, so i think it’s time. I’ve decided that a 100A subpanel would give me plenty of room to add dedicated circuits (I have a few pieces of equipment on my wish list)

Q1: I have plenty of 4AWG CU wire, but cannot find a definitive answer as to whether it’s legal. Here’s the marking: “4AWG E51293(UL) MTW OR THW OR AWM 1232/1283/1337 600V VW-1 — LL22035 CSA TEW OR AWM 0 600V 105C W750C FT1 I A/E” Can anyone tell me if this is legal wire for feeding the subpanel L1, L2 & N? If not, I’ll just go to HD and get whatever they tell me is the preferred wire, but I’d rather not spend the $$$ if I don’t have to.

Q2: The wall it’s going on is the one that separates the garage and the house. Once I attach some wood (whatever I can find that is sturdy) to the wall, mount the box, and pull the feed wire into the garage, I feel it will be unprotected from me dragging stuff around, carrying metal, etc. I could drill holes back through the wall (2x 3/4″ OSB + 3/4″ drywall), and then route through the walls, but I know that wall is some sort of firewall of sorts, and am not sure the code on drilling several holes in it. Is this OK? I really want to encase it in a cabinet as well, but I’ve read this violates code (no cabinets, countertops, etc). Is there a better way to protect / hide it that is legal?

Q3: I have an odd back 3ft of the garage, in that I cannot run wiring from the walls to the attic / ceiling without drilling through an I-beam (which I won’t do). I have cabinets along one side and around the corner. They are against a footer on the side, and matched distance on the back. so not all the way against the wall. Is it legal to use that area between the cabinet and the wall, on top of the footer / floor as a “wireway” to avoid tearing out tons of drywall to drill through studs and run wire horizontally?

Liberty ejector pump not working

By sjmurphy

I have Liberty Model 404 ejector pump under a laundry sink in my basement, maybe 3 years old. A licensed plumber installed it and its plumbed and vented properly (as far as I know). It’s now not running and I can’t figure things out.

The problem started when my wife poured a large quantity of liquid-soap solution down the sink (long story – bubble-themed kids party). After a while, I noticed that soap bubbles were overflowing from the seam between the top and bottom half of the ejector pump. At some point it stopped pumping but I don’t really know exactly when.

The pump is now full of water. It has power. The breaker hadn’t tripped and the unit emits a faint hum when plugged in.

I opened it up to make sure the float was working OK – it seemed to be. I cleaned out a bunch of solids around the outflow. Still not working.

My fear is that maybe the bubbles kept the float in the up position so it kept running for a long time with no water in it, and burned out the motor. Does that happen?

Any ideas on next steps would be appreciated. The pump runs $200+ around here so I don’t want to replace until I’ve tried everything. Thanks.

New thermostat doesn't use C

By zargonog

Hey all,

My AC stopped coming on one day, so I decided to replace the thermostat to see if that would fix the issue.

My old thermostat, Totaline P374-1000, had W1, Y1, G, R, and C connected.

My new one is a Honeywell RTHL111, just real simple non-programmable. It is taking in the W, Y, G, and R, but it clearly says to leave C unconnected.

I’m back to the same position, everything works but the AC. I have a guy coming out to take a look at the outside unit, as I believe that is where the issue is, I just want to confirm if this setup is OK or not. Do I need to do something with the C wire, or get a different thermostat?

Broke the LCD on the old one so can’t use it anymore, and the last thing I want is for the tech to come out and charge me just to look at the thermostat and say get one a new one that takes in the C wire, even though the AC unit stopped working with the old thermostat.
