'2 Guns' Shows The Expanding Possibilities Of Comic Book Movies
By Dorothy Pomerantz, Forbes Staff
Normally, when you think of comic book movies, you think of superheroes, not Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg shooting up a gang of drug lords in the Mexican desert. But the new movie, 2 Guns, is a different kind of comic movie — one with no superheroes in sight. …read more

Video: Griswold Family travels to Disney in the Family Truckster, for real
Filed under:
Is there anyone among us who didn’t laugh uncontrollably at the Family Truckster that transported Clark, Ellen, Rusty and Audrey (along with a few other, less fortunate souls…) to Wally World in National Lampoon’s Vacation? We thought not. Such a classic piece of Hollywood automobilia deserves such recognition, we think, and we’re happy to report that one real-life Griswold Family has replicated the movie’s fateful trip the best way it can: with a Wagon Queen Family Truckster of their very own.
Wally World exists only in the imagination of the movies, and that’s fine because Disney World not only exists but is a perfect fill-in for the Griswold Family Vacation. The family may not be greeted by the late, great John Candy, and they probably aren’t going to see Christie Brinkley in a bright red Ferrari, but they will for sure see Mickey Mouse, and hopefully even Tinker Bell, if they’re lucky.
Check out the video below to see the real-life Griswold Family and their faithful recreation of the infamous Family Truckster, and feel free to head on over to the official Disney blog for more on the family and their vacationing travails. Finally, check out another fan-made Family Truckster here.

Ryan Kwanten Is Venom in Unofficial Short
If you’ve always dreamed of a Marvel movie shot as if it was a contemporary of Godard’s Breathless, well… you’re in luck. Today’s winner in the unauthorized comic book short film lottery goes to True Blood star Ryan Kwanten and director Joe Lynch for their curious take on Spider-Man antagonist Eddie Brock, a.k.a. Venom. Take a look below, but as you might expect, the actual Venom appearance comes pretty late in the game:
Lynch also made the Punisher short “Dirty Laundry” last year with Thomas Jane. I’m not sure what these guys hope to accomplish with these things, but hey, whatever works for them.

2 Guns Review
Have I seen this movie before? I think I’ve seen this movie before.
Universal’s new action-thriller/buddy-comedy 2 Guns is the kind of picture that’s full of been-there, done-that characters, twists, and action beats that are as familiar as houseguests who have overstayed their welcome, know it, and don’t care.
Denzel Washington should know better than this. Mark Wahlberg, well… maybe not. But come on, Denzel. We expect more from you.
The pair play undercover law enforcement agents hot on the trail of a Mexican drug lord (Edward James Olmos). The trick is neither Washington’s DEA agent Robert “Bobby” Trench or Wahlberg’s Navy intelligence officer Michael “Stig” Stigman knows the other guy is secretly on the side of the law. Bobby thinks the undercover Stig is a crook and vice versa, so much confusion and comedic interplay is meant to result from this arrangement — amid the gun battles, fistfights, and car chases, of course. (That includes a memorable car chase/fistfight combo scene that is perhaps the highpoint of the film.)

The Smurfs 2 Review
By Matt Fowler
First things first. This review comes with a caveat. I never saw the first Smurfs movie. So if you have a problem with me reviewing the second installment of this franchise, this is your chance to back out. Continue no further. Because there’s a chance that I’ll miss some character complexities and cinematic nuances if they were, in fact, established in the first installment.
But I asked my son what happened and then read the Wiki page, so I’m good, right?
How I even managed to miss* (*dodge) the first Smurfs, having three kids, is beyond me. Fortune lands when least expected. But, likewise, atrocity strikes when we’re least prepared. And Smurfs 2, with all of its needless three dimensions, struck me right between the eyes. As animated fare goes this summer, we’ve gone from the unnecessary-but-charming Monsters University to the derivative, mediocre Turbo to…this. This steaming pile of misery.
Watch the American Hustle Trailer
Director David O. Russell reunites with two of his stars from The Fighter, Oscar winner Christian Bale and Amy Adams, for American Hustle, which also stars Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and Robert De Niro (all of whom previously worked with Russell on Silver Linings Playbook). Jeremy Renner rounds out the star-studded ensemble.
The crime flick (set against the backdrop of the ABSCAM case) has an especially Scorsese-esque vibe to it, wouldn’t you agree?
Sony has slated American Hustle for a December 13th release.

Comprehensive GDP Revision and Advance Estimate for the Second Quarter of 2013
This morning the Bureau of Economic Analysis released a comprehensive revision to the National Income and Product Accounts, covering the full history of data since 1929. The revision showed that the recovery from the Great Recession has been slightly faster than previously reported, with real gross domestic product (GDP) expanding by a cumulative 8.5% from 2009:Q2 to 2013:Q1, compared to the previous estimate of 8.1% growth over that period. Including the advance estimate for 2013:Q2, real GDP has risen by 9.0% since the business-cycle trough in 2009:Q2 (see chart). In addition, real GDP surpassed its pre-recession peak in 2011:Q2, two quarters sooner than was reported prior to the revision, and is 4.4% higher than it was at the business-cycle peak in 2007:Q4.
The revision also showed that while the contraction during the Great Recession was slightly less severe than previously reported, it remains the largest decline since quarterly data became available in 1947. Cumulatively, real GDP fell by 4.3% during the recession, less than the 4.7% drop previously reported. The steep drop in economic activity caused by the recession makes it imperative that more work is done to raise economic growth and speed job creation.
The comprehensive revision to the national accounts, which is the first since July 2009, includes additional source data received by the Bureau of Economic Analysis, as well as methodological changes designed to better reflect the evolving nature of the U.S. economy. For instance, the GDP data released today incorporates input-output tables derived from the once-every-five-years Economic Census, and adopts an expanded definition of business investment that includes spending on research and development (R&D) and the creation of original works of art like movies. All told, these and other changes raised the level of GDP in the first quarter of 2013 by $551 billion at an annual rate (or 3.4%), from $16.0 trillion to $16.5 trillion.
