Eggplant Recipes: From Dips To Parmesan And Beyond (PHOTOS)

By The Huffington Post News Editors

We never met an eggplant we didn’t like, but we know it’s been a tougher road for some people. We’ve heard eggplant referred to as spongy, slimy and bland. GUYS if that is how you feel, you are doing eggplant wrong. This amazing member of the nightshade family (don’t worry, Gwyneth Paltrow isn’t eating them anymore, so there’s more for us) is probably one of the most versatile ingredients we can think of. What eggplant does best is soak up the flavors of whatever you cook it with. If you make sure its surroundings are delicious, the eggplant will be delicious as well.

A few things to keep in mind when you shop for eggplant (or aubergine, if you’re shopping in the UK): not all eggplants were created equal. You’ll want to match your eggplant to the a cuisine it originated nearby. For preparations like eggplant parmesan, you’ll want a big, stout Italian eggplant. When stir-frying with chiles, the denser, smaller Japanese eggplant work best. For Thai eggplant recipes, we love baby green eggplants. Whichever eggplant you decide to buy, make sure it’s firm to the touch, shiny and free of blemishes. If your eggplant is mushy before you cook it, it probably won’t fare much better afterward.

Weekend Box Office: 'Iron Man 3' Astonishes Overseas While 'Pain And Gain' Tops Domestic

By Scott Mendelson, Contributor

2012 Mercedes-Benz ML350 diesel playing among the rocks

As will be the case at least a few times this summer, the big box office news will be not in America but in foreign markets as major summer movies open overseas prior to their domestic debuts. As is the case with Iron Man 3.  My press screening isn’t until tomorrow, but the Shane Black-directed and Robert Downey Jr./Gwyneth Paltrow-starring threequel  has already made a rather stunning $195 million overseas since opening in 42 markets on Wednesday.  This is even more than the $185 million The Avengers debuted with overseas last summer on this weekend in 39 markets. Iron Man 2 also opened overseas first three summers ago, earning $92 million for its trouble, while the first Iron Man earned $99 million in its overseas debut, so this is pretty much par for the course.  One could argue that the 3D ticket-price bump somewhat accounts for the gap between Iron Man 3 and the first two films, but I’m not going to nitpick a $195 million five-day debut.   The first two Iron Man films earned $266 million and $311 million overseas respectively, with the second film out-grossing the first ‘over there’ even as it came in slightly under the first film’s domestic gross, so Iron Man 3 will have out-grossed the overseas numbers of its predecessors probably by the end of next week. In terms of overseas debuts, it’s the eighth-biggest, behind the $199 million debut for Twilight: Breaking Dawn 2 and ahead of the $193 million debut of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.  For the record, overseas openings are sometimes tough to compare because of how many markets a given film opens in and/or what day of the week a film opens, but this is still a shockingly good debut for what should be a major worldwide box office player for summer 2013.  It broke opening weekend records in Singapore, IndonesiaArgentina, Vietnam, Taiwan, Philippines, Malaysia, and Hong Kong. Of note, the film earned $7.2 million on 113 IMAX screens alone (about $64,000 per screen), also the IMAX debut of The Avengers last year.

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Looks like there’s a new East Coast versus West Coast battle brewing.

One month after Rachel Zoe opened DreamDry, a blowout salon in New York City’s Flatiron neighborhood, we learn that Gwyneth Paltrow has teamed up with her hairstylist David Babaii and trainer Tracy Anderson to debut the Babaii Blow Dry bar in Brentwood, Calif on April 4.

Gwyneth and her sleek strands are giving Rachel a run for her money with a salon housed inside of Tracey’s new fitness studio that allows “women to transform themselves into the beautiful people that they are,” Babaii told us. So, you not only get in a great workout but you can get great hair afterwards using all-natural products. (Now that’s Goop-approved!)

Gwyneth Paltrow’s Self Cover Doesn’t Exactly Look Like… Herself (PHOTOS, POLL)

By The Huffington Post News Editors

We’re big Gwyneth Paltrow fans, so we absolutely hate when the actress’ image is changed from its natural state of gorgeousness.

The “Iron Man” star covers Self’s April issue looking like someone other than the Gwyn we know and love. Her blonde hair and blue eyes are there, but we smell a little fishy Photoshop work on the cover. Seriously, what’s going on with her face?

The crazy thing is that the 40-year-old even looks different in her interior shot (a modified version of not-Gwyneth, if you will). We’ve bemoaned the heavy-handed retouching of Ms. Paltrow before, so we’re hoping magazines will get the hint that the face of “Max Factor” is just fine the way she is. (Except, of course, the rare occasion when a lil’ airbrushing couldn’t hurt.)

Gwyneth Paltrow Clothing Sale On Goop Plucked From Star’s Own Closet (PHOTOS)

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Wearing the designer duds off Gwyneth Paltrow‘s back has been pretty impossible — until now, that is.

The “Best Dressed” actress has handpicked items from her very own closet for a charity sale on her lifestyle site Goop. Every item you buy will benefit The Edible Schoolyard Project, The David Lynch Foundation or Pencils of Promise. As for the clothes? They’re good and (relatively) cheap.

You can buy Gwynnie’s purple Gucci purse for a mere $900, a fraction of the $1,390 retail price (but it’s actually on sale for $625 on NeimanMarcus.com right now). Or you can snag her Camilla Skovgaard booties for $320, almost half their original price. Among other things, the face of Tod’s is also selling a tote from the brand for almost $1,000 below market price. Is this, like, Gwyneth’s version of The Outnet?

Audi Returns As A Co-Star In Iron Man 3: Video

By Kurt Ernst

Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) drives the Audi R8 e-tron – image: Audi

Product placement in movies is big business, since nothing sells goods like more eyes seeing them. This holds true regardless of the product, which is why automakers are scrambling to get their wares up on the big screen, next to soft drinks and portable electronics.

If you saw The Avengers, which also featured the Tony Stark / Iron Man character, you know that Acura-branded vehicles were prevalent throughout the film. The latest Die Hard movie, A Good Day To Die Hard, was very close to an infomercial for Mercedes-Benz, as some 14 different three-pointed-star models were used in filming.

Audi had something of a minor role in earlier Iron Man films, and it looks like the four-ring brand will be back in Iron Man 3. Tony Stark (or Robert Downey Jr., playing the character) is seen behind the wheel of an Audi R8 e-tron, while his significant other Pepper Potts (played by Gwyneth Paltrow) drives an Audi S7 Sportback.

As far as we know, that’s about it for Audi product placements in the film, which promises to be even darker than the first two installments. Just as in the first two films, Tony Stark faces near-insurmountable obstacles on his quest to lead a semi-normal life, and Marvel Studios promises an answer to the question, “does the man make the suit, or does the suit make the man?”

Grandparents’ Names Go Beyond ‘Grandma’ And ‘Grandpa’

By The Huffington Post News Editors

The arrival of a bouncing baby boy or girl can set expecting grandparents’ minds a-whirring, wondering what the new bundle of joy will call them. New grandparents — who may not feel like they look or feel old enough to be one — often balk at the idea of being called “granny” or “grandpa.” Celebrity grandparent Goldie Hawn eschews the term entirely, coming up with an entirely different endearment: “Glamma.” Gwyneth Paltrow‘s mother, actress Blythe Danner, did the same thing — she wanted her grandchildren to call her “Woof” (Apple and Moses landed on “Lalo”).

We asked readers what their grandchildren called them, and the answers ranged from the traditional to the adorable — but they were all made with love:

“Nenah — my grandson named me.” — Rosanne Awbrey
