Avengers 2: No Hank Pym, New Ultron Origin

avengers-ultron-2

The Avengers writer-director Joss Whedon said Sunday at San Diego Comic-Con that superhero-scientist Hank Pym (aka Ant-Man/Giant Man) won’t be in his sequel Avengers: Age of Ultron.

And since Pym won’t be in the film, Whedon revealed that Ultron — the villainous robot created by Pym in the comics — will have a different origin story in the big screen version. (Fans are already speculating that Tony Stark will now be Ultron’s creator instead.)

How Much Marvel-ous Money Did RDJ Make?

IRON MAN 3

It’s a little shocking that Johnny Depp’s not on this list, but Forbes has issued their rundown of the highest-paid actors in Hollywood and none other than Tony Stark himself, Robert Downey Jr., tops the bunch with $75 million.

Yes, you read that right. $75 million. Not bad for a guy who was essentially unemployable as a leading man in movies until Iron Man opened in 2008.

Iron Man 3 Surpasses The Avengers at International Box Office

Iron Man 3 opened in 42 territories around the world over the weekend – that’s about 79% of the international market, so not small by any stretch. And the latest outing for Tony Stark has so far taken a staggering $195.3 million. That’s more than the $185.1 million taken by The Avengers grossed over its opening weekend.

It’s worth noting, however, that in some territories Iron Man 3 had a slight advantage over The Avengers, opening on a Thursday, not a Friday like The Avengers. But saying that, the film has yet to open in Russia, China or Germany – so it’s still a pretty impressive feat.

It had the highest grossing weekend ever in Argentina, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Vietnam, Taiwan, Philippines, Malaysia and Singapore. And was the biggest opening ever for a Marvel movie in Australia, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Netherlands, Finland, Hungary, Romania, New Zealand, Argentina, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Vietnam, Taiwan, Philippines and Malaysia.

The A-Z of Iron Man

The summer movie season is about to enjoy the sounds of Black Sabbath and exploding robots when Iron Man 3 hits theaters. This highly anticipated sequel marks the official start of Marvel Studios’ Phase 2 movie lineup and the fifth time Robert Downey Jr. has played Tony Stark.

If you haven’t watched the previous Marvel movies in a while (or read some of the comics), there are a lot of faces to remember. That’s why we’ve put together the A-Z of Iron Man to help get you primed for this latest superhero epic.

Even the world’s most egocentric billionaire playboy philanthropist needs a team to hang around. When faced with a challenge too great for any one hero to overcome, Iron Man turns to Earth’s Mightiest to get the job done. In Marvel’s The Avengers, that group numbers only six plus assorted S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, but dozens and dozens of heroes have called themselves Avengers in the comics. Even though Tony faces one of his greatest challenges yet in the form of the Mandarin, don’t expect him to be turning to his fellow Avengers for help. He’s going to handle things with a little help from his armory.

Iron Man vs. Mandarin: Their Best Fights

They say a hero is only as good as his villains. And every good superhero has his great nemesis. Batman has the Joker. Spider-Man has Green Goblin. Wolverine has non-alcoholic beer. And Iron Man has the Mandarin. More than anyone else in the Marvel Universe, Mandarin opposes everything Tony Stark stands for. Whereas Tony Stark wears the most technologically advanced battle-suit on the planet, the Mandarin wields ten rings of amazing magical power. Their rivalry is one of mysticism versus science, East versus West, and destiny versus free will.

Naturally, the two characters have clashed a number of times over the decades. With Mandarin finally making his live-action debut in Iron Man 3 next month, we figured now was the perfect time to look back at the most memorable battles between Iron Man and Mandarin, ranging from the Silver Age all the way to Matt Fraction’s recently concluded Invincible Iron Man.

Robert Downey Jr. Talks Iron Man Retirement

With Iron Man 3 hitting theaters in just a couple of weeks, press chatter has once again turned to Robert Downey Jr.’s future with Marvel. The actor’s contract ends with this latest sequel, and that leaves many fans wondering what that means for our beloved Tony Stark.

In a recent interview with GQ, Downey Jr. explained what’s been going through his head in terms of retiring the character.

“This period of time, this shall pass,” Downey Jr. said. “Fortunately I’ve been around the block enough — I’m not ill-prepared. And I love change. I love it when a lightning bolt hits the genny and you’re down for two hours on the set. Now, this isn’t a lightning strike, this is like the warning of a gathering storm.”

Video: Iron Man approves of the 2014 Audi R8

By Seyth Miersma

Filed under:

Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man, has been a pretty loyal R8 guy in the movies – there was a coupe in his garage in the original film, and he conspicuously rocked a V10 Spyder in the sequel. One notable dalliance with a prototype Acura NSX in The Avengers notwithstanding, Audi’s supercar seems like Stark’s go-to choice when he’s not flying around, be-suited.

The trend is set to continue in Iron Man 3, as well. Right as we were learning what Audi will be charging for a 2014 R8, this promo for the car and the movie has cropped up on YouTube. Called Canvas, the Audi spot is basically new R8 porn, peppered with movie quotes and shadowy clips. It’s well worth the 56 seconds it takes to watch it, if only for the sound of the Audi V10 on full song. If you’ve got headphones, wear them.

Iron Man 3 Parties Like It's 1999

In a recent interview, Rebecca Hall talked a bit about her experience playing Dr. Maya Hansen in Iron Man 3, starting with her character’s involvement in the Extremis project.

“Extremis is a formula that my character Maya Hansen has developed that essentially reprograms your genetic code… But it’s got some issues and problems,” Hall explained to Marvel.com. “

is involved in the whole Iron Man world because she met Tony Stark a long time ago when she was an M.I.T. student being funded to do research in a certain field that he’s also a specialist in.”

Iron Man 3's After Credits End Scene?

Warning: Potential MAJOR spoilers follow for Iron Man 3. Do not read if you don’t want to be spoiled on the film.

Tony Stark himself is gearing up to return to the big screen in just over a month in Iron Man 3. And of course, whenever a new Marvel movie hits, all eyes turn to the potential for Easter Eggs in the film. What nerd-errific references will we spot in Iron Man 3? And does the threequel feature a post credits scene that will tie it into other upcoming Marvel films such as Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Thor: The Dark World, Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers 2, Ant-Man, or perhaps even an unannounced Phase 3 project such as Doctor Strange or Black Panther?

Audi Returns As A Co-Star In Iron Man 3: Video

By Kurt Ernst

Product placement in movies is big business, since nothing sells goods like more eyes seeing them. This holds true regardless of the product, which is why automakers are scrambling to get their wares up on the big screen, next to soft drinks and portable electronics.

If you saw The Avengers, which also featured the Tony Stark / Iron Man character, you know that Acura-branded vehicles were prevalent throughout the film. The latest Die Hard movie, A Good Day To Die Hard, was very close to an infomercial for Mercedes-Benz, as some 14 different three-pointed-star models were used in filming.

Audi had something of a minor role in earlier Iron Man films, and it looks like the four-ring brand will be back in Iron Man 3. Tony Stark (or Robert Downey Jr., playing the character) is seen behind the wheel of an Audi R8 e-tron, while his significant other Pepper Potts (played by Gwyneth Paltrow) drives an Audi S7 Sportback.

As far as we know, that’s about it for Audi product placements in the film, which promises to be even darker than the first two installments. Just as in the first two films, Tony Stark faces near-insurmountable obstacles on his quest to lead a semi-normal life, and Marvel Studios promises an answer to the question, “does the man make the suit, or does the suit make the man?”

Iron Man 3: Who Else Wears the Armor?

As the exciting new trailer for Iron Man 3 debuts this morning (check it out below if you haven’t!), I can also reveal some big new details about the film gleaned from a press event IGN attended a few weeks back. We were shown about 20 minutes of the film, which begins about 25-30 minutes into the running time. Suffice to say, notable spoilers for this portion of the film follow – though we were not shown anything beyond that.

The trailers have shown a huge attack on Tony Stark’s Malibu home that results in its utter destruction. We were shown this sequence in its entirety, along with the scenes immediately before and after it. As it turns out, by this point in the film, The Mandarin (Ben Kingsley) has taken credit for an assault that has seriously injured Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau). As a result, Tony (Robert Downey Jr.) goes off the rails in a very Tony way, yelling into some news cameras that The Mandarin should come directly for him, and includes his home address in his rant.

'Iron Man 3' Trailer Gives Us Exactly What We Want in an 'Iron Man' Film

By Carol Pinchefsky, Contributor

I never found Tony Stark all that charming. In fact, when I think of Iron Man’s alter ego, I think, “Big wallet, bigger ego, daddy issues.” But Tony looks even more likeable, even heroic, in the trailer for the upcoming film, Iron Man 3. That’s because it looks like this movie will give Tony something that all the technology in the world can’t give him: a real heart. Gone is the billionaire playboy of old. This Tony sleeps poorly at night, and if this were the comic books, I’d wonder if he’s been drinking. His nemesis, the multi-ringed Mandarin (better known in the Marvel comics as his archenemy), seems hellbent on hitting Tony where it hurts. That would be his girlfriend, Pepper Potts. Tony himself admitted it in The Avengers. “I’m volatile, self-obsessed, and don’t play well with others.” But it seems that she’s “the one thing I can’t live without.” This is what I’ve been missing in the previous Iron Man movies: a Tony who isn’t masking his feelings with witty banter. I like superhero movies because superheroes are tougher humans, but they’re still human. Tony Stark has always been willing parody of himself. He’ll have to play well with others and do it with a straight face if he wants to take down the man whose rings are actually powerful alien technology, each ring with a different deadly purpose. If this trailer is any hint of the movie to come, this film, which will be released on May 4, will be the best Iron Man movie to date. I knew The Avengers was good for him. Robert Downey Jr. on Leaving Iron Man

For how long can Robert Downey, Jr. play Iron Man? It’s a nice problem for Marvel to have, one supposes, considering that it was only five years ago when the first Iron Man film was about to come out and the whole Marvel Cinematic Universe was an unproven concept.

But the fact is, Downey, Jr. is getting expensive for Marvel. The notoriously cost-conscious studio reportedly had to fork over upwards of $50 million to the actor for The Avengers, including box office bonuses and backend compensation. Plus, word has it that Downey, Jr.’s contract is up after Iron Man 3 hits this May, so Empire recently asked Tony Stark himself how much longer he might stick around in the metal suit.

New Iron Man 3 Poster: Pepper Potts

Another day, another Iron Man 3 banner poster.

This time round it’s the turn of Gwyneth Paltrow’s Pepper Potts, Tony Stark‘s put-upon assistant and love interest. She had a cameo in The Avengers and was largely overshadowed by Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow in Iron Man 2. Will she get more screen time in the third instalment?

The poster sees her cradling a battle-damaged Iron Man helmet. Is this a portent of things to come? Will Tony Stark be in more danger than ever before?
