Winter Soldier Footage Reaction

At the Marvel panel at Comic-Con this evening, we got to see Captain America put his Super Soldier skills to work, big time. But watch out — some spoilers for Winter Soldier follow.

Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, introduced the cast of the film — Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Frank Grillo, Cobie Smulders, and Emily VanCamp, plus directors Anthony and Joe Russo — before showing a sizzle reel that knocked the crowd’s socks off. It also knocked a bunch of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents on their asses, as a matter of fact.

The first portion of the reel features Cap getting into an elevator at what appears to be S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters. He’s in his full S.H.I.E.L.D. style uniform, and as other agents board the elevator at different floors, Cap notices one guy sweating, another’s hand sort of hanging near his holster, and so on. Something is wrong, and after the lift is full of agents (including Frank Grillo’s Crossbones), he says, “Before we do this, does anyone want to get out?” Then a full-on fight breaks out, with Cap greatly outnumbered and seemingly beaten from the moment it starts — headlocked, pinned, and getting hit with electrically charged stun sticks. One of his hands is pinned to the wall by a magnetic handcuff, but Cap still fights off his attackers with his remaining available hand. It’s all quickly cut and edgy type stuff, less superhero-ish than Bourne.

Comic-Con: Marvel's Captain America 2, Guardians Press Conference

Marvel Studios brought two big upcoming projects to its San Diego Comic-Con Press Conference on Saturday: Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy.

First up was the Cap conference, which included stars Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Emily VanCamp, Frank Grillo, Cobie Smulders, as well as directors Anthony Russo and Joe Russo.

During the Q&A, Evans explained a little bit about what Steve Rogers has been up to since joining The Avengers and how he’s grown from film to film. “In the first Captain America, it’s about giving

the opportunity to serve, the opportunity to be a soldier. In The Avengers, you have so many other characters and all these establishments and relationships, and you can’t really dive too deeply into any one character. In this movie, it’s about showing Cap, now given the ability to give up himself, the question now becomes ‘Well, what’s right?’ It’s not just about doing the right thing, it’s what is the right thing… It’s not black and white, it’s gray, and I think that’s where his relationship with Black Widow comes to fruition… Something happens, and as a result, these two people from different worlds need to rely on one another.”

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Premiere Review

By Eric Goldman

Going the classic route of introducing us to a team via a newcomer, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. — which was shown as a surprise at San Diego Comic-Con — begins with Agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), a S.H.I.E.L.D. badass used to working on his own. But Ward’s skill set has put him on the radar of Agent Maria Hill (guest star Cobie Smulders, reprising her Avengers role)… Oh, and a guy named Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg).

It seems Coulson — whose miraculous resurrection is explained (in a way – more on that later) — is putting together a squad to investigate the emerging world of superheroes and villains, and Ward is his latest recruit. Coulson has also brought in young specialists Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) and a veteran S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen), with a mysterious past of her own. Soon this new group, part of “Level 7,” are on the hunt for a man (J. August Richards) who used his superhuman abilities to save someone from a fire, with Coulson warning that other far more nefarious groups are no doubt seeking this person as well.
