Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox Review

By Joshua Yehl

For those in the comics know, the Flashpoint comic event was more of a means to an end to launch the New 52 than a definitive alternate reality story, but Warner Bros. Animation has outdone its source material by making Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox a fully fleshed out and cohesive tale featuring the Flash. The sleek and hard-hitting anime-influenced style works perfectly for this much more mature and action-packed story. And when I say mature I mean it: this is the most bloody, violent, and downright hardcore DC Comics animated film to date.

Whether that violence is too much or not is your decision. One character gets an arrow through the head. Another, after his helmet gets broken open, gets a face full of bullets and all we see is the blood splatter out. Someone else gets decapitated and we see the severed head. These gratuitous deaths of countless soldiers, favorites making a cameo, and even main characters have that Die Hard sense of fun about it, but it takes a depressing turn at the end. The brutality reaches the tipping point where its not so enjoyable anymore, most notably when a child gets straight up killed and we see his body flop to the ground with unblinking eyes.

Lessons Of 'The Dark Knight'

By Scott Mendelson, Contributor

Well, this week is just full of milestone anniversaries, isn’t it? Monday celebrated the 25th anniversary of Die Hard while yesterday marked the 15th anniversary of a personal favorite of mine, The Mask of Zorro. Today marks five years since the opening of what I consider to be the defining film of the last decade. No, it’s not the “best” film of the 2000’s, that’s a personal choice for everyone. But no film captured what pundits like to call “post-9/11” America better than Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight. …read more

Bruce Willis Has A Clip Of His Upcoming Appearance On ‘Under the Dome’ (VIDEO)

By The Huffington Post News Editors

According to Bruce Willis, he’s finally returning to the medium that made him famous. The movie star got his start on “Moonlighting” before transitioning into a bona fide movie star with the “Die Hard” series of films. He dropped by “Late Show with David Letterman” to talk about his return to the small screen as a guest star on the CBS summer hit “Under the Dome.”

He even brought a clip of his appearance. But, unlike most of the characters, Willis isn’t under the dome. The narrator explains: “Special appearance by Bruce Willis as the guy who lives right next door to the dome.”

“I’m not in the dome! This is the line, right here, by my house! …My watermelons!” Willis exclaims in the clip. Okay, it was just a joke, but it was a pretty funny one. His poor watermelons sliced in half like that cow!

What's A Good Day to Die Hard on Blu-ray?

20th Century Fox announced today the home video release of A Good Day to Die Hard, which debuts on May 14 on Digital HD and June 4 on Blu-ray and DVD. What’s more, Fox is putting out a 2-disc Blu-ray Extended Edition with over two hours of bonus material, just in time for Father’s Day.

In this fifth installment of the Die Hard franchise, John McClane (Bruce Willis) travels to Russia to help out his seemingly wayward son, Jack (Jai Courtney), only to discover that Jack is a CIA operative working to prevent a nuclear-weapons heist, causing the father and son to team up against underworld forces.

Review: 'Olympus' is tense yet generic

In a week when North Korea posted a homemade video showing the U.S. Capitol building being destroyed by a missile, what more logical response could Hollywood offer than a macho thriller about a Secret Service agent who takes on North Korean terrorists who attack the White House? The first of two similarly themed action dramas set for this year (“White House Down” arrives in June), “Olympus Has Fallen” will put to the test the question of whether American audiences are ready, 12 years after 9-11, to watch, strictly as disposable popcorn entertainment, a film in which the United States and some of its most prominent landmarks are devastated by foreign terrorists.

The answer almost undoubtedly will be yes, as the tough-guy former agent played by Gerard Butler gets to kick a whole lot of badass butt while trying to rescue the president. Although this is the sort of film in which the fate of the world hinges, when all is said and done, on the outcome of a one-on-one martial arts contest, director Antoine Fuqua‘s notably bloody child of Die Hard still generates a fair amount of tension and produces the kind of nationalistic outrage that rock-ribbed Americans will feel in their guts. Foreign revenue should be hefty as well, especially in countries where many viewers will get a thrill watching Washington get the sort of treatment usually reserved for places like Baghdad and Kabul.

Either due to incredible clairvoyance on the parts of first-time screenwriters Creighton Rothenberger and Katrin Benedikt or just through one of those twists of fate, the film arrives just as North Korea has made anti-U.S. saber-rattling an almost daily exercise. So it seems uncannily timely that the brilliant bad guy here is a (supposedly) rogue North Korean who leads a bunch of skilled commandos on a raid of the White House that nets them the president and several key members of his staff as hostages. No doubt bootleg copies of the film will make their way to Kim Jong Un, who might be simultaneously offended and delighted at the opportunity to further rouse his subjects by showing them how much the enemy hates them.

At its core, however, “Olympus” is like an ’80s or ’90s genre item in which Clint Eastwood, Bruce Willis or Mel Gibson outwitted and outmuscled shrewd, more formidably armed opponents. Like Eastwood in “In the Line of Fire,” Butler (who also produced) plays a disgraced presidential agent sidelined and haunted by a fluky failure (detailed in a 10-minute prologue) who suddenly and inadvertently finds himself back in the thick of a crisis.

If seemingly far-fetched, the attack by the North Korean paramilitary team is nonetheless ingenious and pulled off …read more

Olympus Has Fallen Review

By Jim Vejvoda

The action-thriller Olympus Has Fallen is a far better Die Hard movie than the one released last month. That’s not to say this film isn’t without its ludicrous moments and formulaic faults, but Olympus Has Fallen is still a solid, old school action-thriller featuring a fine cast and a sincere execution by director Antoine Fuqua that lifts it above other fare of this sort.

Gerard Butler stars as Secret Service agent Mike Banning, a tough but reliable bloke who serves on the personal protection detail of President Ben Asher (Aaron Eckhart). He’s not just the President’s bodyguard, but also a close friend to both him and his young son Connor (Finley Jacobsen).

Audi Returns As A Co-Star In Iron Man 3: Video

By Kurt Ernst

Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) drives the Audi R8 e-tron – image: Audi

Product placement in movies is big business, since nothing sells goods like more eyes seeing them. This holds true regardless of the product, which is why automakers are scrambling to get their wares up on the big screen, next to soft drinks and portable electronics.

If you saw The Avengers, which also featured the Tony Stark / Iron Man character, you know that Acura-branded vehicles were prevalent throughout the film. The latest Die Hard movie, A Good Day To Die Hard, was very close to an infomercial for Mercedes-Benz, as some 14 different three-pointed-star models were used in filming.

Audi had something of a minor role in earlier Iron Man films, and it looks like the four-ring brand will be back in Iron Man 3. Tony Stark (or Robert Downey Jr., playing the character) is seen behind the wheel of an Audi R8 e-tron, while his significant other Pepper Potts (played by Gwyneth Paltrow) drives an Audi S7 Sportback.

As far as we know, that’s about it for Audi product placements in the film, which promises to be even darker than the first two installments. Just as in the first two films, Tony Stark faces near-insurmountable obstacles on his quest to lead a semi-normal life, and Marvel Studios promises an answer to the question, “does the man make the suit, or does the suit make the man?”

"Jack the Giant Slayer" Tops Weekend Box Office

By Dan Carroll, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Fantasy adventure film Jack the Giant Slayer — distributed by Time Warner subsidiary Warner Brothers — took the No. 1 spot at the domestic box office this past weekend, according to data released by media management firm Rentrak. The film, making its debut in theaters, recorded just more than $28 million in domestic revenue.

Jack also ranked first overall in total worldwide sales, pulling in another $13.7 million overseas to bring its weekend cumulative total to $41.7 million.

A Good Day to Die Hard, the fifth installment of the Die Hard action series, topped the international box office with $18.3 million this past weekend. While the film, distributed by News Corp. subsidiary 20th Century Fox, barely cracked the top 10 domestically (landing at No. 9), the weekend’s sales brought its total box office run to over $220 million.

Warner BrothersThe Hobbit continues to perform well despite being released last year; the film pulled in another $9.2 million internationally this weekend to bring its cumulative box office sales to over $1 billion. The film is now the 15th highest-grossing film of all time, according to Box Office Mojo.

Identity Thief Topples Die Hard at Box Office

Could this be it for John McClane? The critically panned A Good Day to Die Hard dropped from being the No. 1 movie in North America in its debut last weekend to fifth place this weekend, with holdover Identity Thief stealing back the top spot in its third week in release.

The fifth Die Hard movie — reportedly budgeted at $92 million without including sizable marketing costs — has only made just under $52 million at the domestic box office so far, meaning it certainly won’t reach $92 million at home.

However, A Good Day to Die Hard is the latest big Hollywood movie to earn more abroad than at home. Its worldwide tally is currently at $131.4 million. Die Hard‘s international earning power would be the soundest reason for why the aging franchise might get a sixth installment.

Die Hard 5 Wins the Weekend

The three-day estimates for the weekend box office give A Good Day to Die Hard a narrow victory over last weekend’s champ, Identity Thief, but it’s entirely possible that the latter could end up winning the four-day Presidents’ Day holiday weekend when the final numbers are in.

A Good Day to Die Hard is the second-highest debut in the Die Hard series, opening with $8 million less than what Live Free or Die Hard debuted with in 2007.

The new romantic drama Safe Haven performed well on Valentine’s Day before fading into third place. Meanwhile, the animated Escape From Planet Earth opened in the Top 5 and Beautiful Creatures flopped in its sixth place debut.

Report: New Die Hard movie wrecked 132 cars in $11 million chase scene [w/video]

By Jeremy Korzeniewski

Mercedes-Benz G-Class SUV wrecked in Die Hard 5

Filed under:

It would seem the act of dying hard brings with it lots of wanton destruction of the four-wheeled kind. According to John Moore, director of A Good Day To Die Hard, starring Bruce Willis, There were 132 (cars) that could never be used again. Another 518 required a lot of work. And damn right there were some good cars there… That’s the fun of it.”

Please join us in one great big collective sigh. Done? Okay, let’s continue.

“With Die Hard it’s about how audacious the action is,” says Moore. “So you have to drive over a Lamborghini. An actual one. And yes it hurts me. I’m a car fanatic.” Yeah. Sounds like it hurt really bad… though not as bad as the final tally after all the carnage had been counted: “Someone showed me the numbers on the car chase and soup to nuts, you put it all together it was like an $11 million sequence.”

Interestingly enough, that $11 million tally didn’t include a “several” Mercedes-Benz G-Class SUVs. According to Moore, the German automaker provided G wagons at no cost for filming, and, of course, all of them were wrecked. Proof of such can be seen by watching the video, provided by Mercedes itself, below.
