‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ At Comic-Con: Joe And Anthony Russo On Directing The Next ‘Cap Adventure

By The Huffington Post News Editors

The first “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” footage had its Hall H Comic-Con premiere on Saturday night and the reaction has been overwhelmingly positive. What’s already apparent is that this ‘Cap will be heavy on S.H.I.E.L.D. and, as co-directors Joe and Anthony Russo explain, will bridge the two Avengers movies, creating a “very strong hand off.”

I met with the Russo brothers here in San Diego shortly before their Hall H panel to talk about their highly anticipated sequel and just how two directors who are best known for their work on “Community,” “Arrested Development” and the Owen Wilson movie “You, Me and Dupree” found themselves in the directors’ chairs for a big budget Captain America movie.

I have to admit, after watching “You, Me, and Dupree,” I didn’t think a future step would be a Captain America movie.

Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans Kiss In ‘Captain America’ The Talk Of Comic-Con

By The Huffington Post News Editors

SAN DIEGO — Actor Chris Evans recently filmed a kiss with co-star Scarlett Johansson on the set of “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” – and says it was a little like kissing his sister.

The two stars reprise their roles as Captain America and Black Widow in the sequel, currently in production and set for release next April.

Winter Soldier Footage Reaction

At the Marvel panel at Comic-Con this evening, we got to see Captain America put his Super Soldier skills to work, big time. But watch out — some spoilers for Winter Soldier follow.

Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, introduced the cast of the film — Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Frank Grillo, Cobie Smulders, and Emily VanCamp, plus directors Anthony and Joe Russo — before showing a sizzle reel that knocked the crowd’s socks off. It also knocked a bunch of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents on their asses, as a matter of fact.

The first portion of the reel features Cap getting into an elevator at what appears to be S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters. He’s in his full S.H.I.E.L.D. style uniform, and as other agents board the elevator at different floors, Cap notices one guy sweating, another’s hand sort of hanging near his holster, and so on. Something is wrong, and after the lift is full of agents (including Frank Grillo’s Crossbones), he says, “Before we do this, does anyone want to get out?” Then a full-on fight breaks out, with Cap greatly outnumbered and seemingly beaten from the moment it starts — headlocked, pinned, and getting hit with electrically charged stun sticks. One of his hands is pinned to the wall by a magnetic handcuff, but Cap still fights off his attackers with his remaining available hand. It’s all quickly cut and edgy type stuff, less superhero-ish than Bourne.

Comic-Con: Marvel's Captain America 2, Guardians Press Conference

Marvel Studios brought two big upcoming projects to its San Diego Comic-Con Press Conference on Saturday: Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy.

First up was the Cap conference, which included stars Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Emily VanCamp, Frank Grillo, Cobie Smulders, as well as directors Anthony Russo and Joe Russo.

During the Q&A, Evans explained a little bit about what Steve Rogers has been up to since joining The Avengers and how he’s grown from film to film. “In the first Captain America, it’s about giving

the opportunity to serve, the opportunity to be a soldier. In The Avengers, you have so many other characters and all these establishments and relationships, and you can’t really dive too deeply into any one character. In this movie, it’s about showing Cap, now given the ability to give up himself, the question now becomes ‘Well, what’s right?’ It’s not just about doing the right thing, it’s what is the right thing… It’s not black and white, it’s gray, and I think that’s where his relationship with Black Widow comes to fruition… Something happens, and as a result, these two people from different worlds need to rely on one another.”

captain-america-motorcycle-comic-con-winter-soldier

When San Diego Comic-Con opened for Preview Night last night, there wasn’t much going on at the big Marvel space on the show floor in terms of big movie reveals. There were a couple of actors dressed up as Asgardians for photo ops with the fans, but that was about it. But fans know that Marvel has a history of slowly unveiling props, costumes, and more from their upcoming films throughout the show, and sure enough today Captain America’s motorcycle suddenly appeared on site. Cap's Peggy Carter Getting a Spinoff?

Still bummed about the end of Captain America and Peggy Carter‘s fate? Well, actress Hayley Atwell now says that we may not have seen the last of Cap’s true love in the Marvel movie universe.

“There’s been an online campaign for Peggy to be featured. People really liked her,” Atwell told Fairfax. “So Marvel have made sure that as part of Comi-Con

there will be a little kind of snapshot as to what Peggy’s actually really capable of, which was finished here and which was great fun. Hopefully, it will lead to other things.”

Rumor: Captain America's New Costume

The days are over when superheroes would just wear the same old suit for years and years and years. And while for a guy like Iron Man it always made sense for him to keep upgrading his armor, it looks like Marvel’s plan is for their other heroes to keep changing garb as well. I guess that makes sense as well, really (and not just because you can sell more toys that way).

Anyway, a leaked image has shown up that purports to be Captain America‘s new uniform for (at least part of) his next film, The Winter Soldier. Take a look at the concept design below, though keep in mind that this image cannot be confirmed at this time:

Batroc the Leaper in Captain America 2

Yes, we live in a world where Batroc the Leaper will appear on the big screen.

Latino Review reports that the second- (third-?) tier Marvel villain will play a part in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Mixed martial artist and UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St-Pierre (GSP) will play Batroc, who presumably will serve as a henchman for the bigger villain of the piece (who we still don’t have confirmation on, do we?).

Batroc is a French mercenary and kickboxer specialist who has mostly appeared in Cap comics over the years. You gotta figure his movie version will be toned down to not look too much like the below image, right?

Speculating on Captain America: The Winter Soldier

I don’t know if you guys know this, but one of the greatest things in the history of superheroes happened today (no, not the new ‘60s Batman comic, but that’s sweet too). The Natural, actor supreme, independent film champion, the Sundance Kid, and all-around American icon Robert Redford is in talks to be in Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

The report tells us that Redford will play a senior role within S.H.I.E.L.D. Of course, the Marvel Movie Universe has established that Sam Jackson’s Nick Fury is the Executive Director of the organization, but that doesn’t mean Redford’s character couldn’t be a former Director or someone in a lateral position. But since we don’t really know, I thought it’d be a fun change of pace for this column to speculate my heart out.

Robert Redford in Talks for Captain America 2

Word has it that Hollywood icon Robert Redford is “in discussions” to join the cast of Marvel’s Captain America: The First Avenger. Marvel, how far you’ve come!

If he takes the job, Redford will play “a senior leadership role in S.H.I.E.L.D.” How senior, though? Isn’t Sam Jackson’s Nick Fury the boss of that super-spy agency? But how could Redford take orders from Jackson onscreen? That just doesn’t work.

Anyway, this report comes from Deadline, who speculate that Redford’s character would be likely to show up in other Marvel films just as Jackson has since his debut as Fury in Iron Man.

Captain America 2 a "Political Thriller"

With six Marvel superhero films on the horizon, it’s safe to say that studio head Kevin Feige is a pretty busy guy — even more so lately as Iron Man 3 approaches its May 3 debut.

“We’re entering that finishing crunch time where the days of the week have no meaning because you’re working all seven of them,” Feige told Variety in a recent interview.

A Guide to Avengers Comics

As 2013 gets underway, the Avengers franchise is bigger than ever at Marvel. There are various team books that fall under the Avengers banner, but there are the many solo and spinoff titles starring heroes like Hulk, Thor, Iron Man, and Captain America as well. It’s getting to the point where you need a fat wallet and a PhD in comic book continuity to keep track of all these titles.

Sadly, we don’t have the first one, but we do know a thing or two about the Avengers franchise. Just as we did with the many books that comprise the X-Men franchise, we’ve put together a guide to the many Avengers comics that are either currently on the stands or set to launch in the coming months. For each series, we break down the basic concept, where it fits into the larger picture, and explain why it might appeal to you.
