Rheem Air Handler shuts off but fan outside keeps running

By BonitaMan

Hello, I had the service tech out here today and of course everything worked fine when he was here!

But then several hours later the air handler (I think that’s what it’s called) inside the garage stopped. I could hear it making noises but it wasn’t the usual humming sound. Outside, the fan was running as normal, but after a minute or so the air it pushed out became cooler.

Not sure what the issue is. The system shouldn’t have stopped because it was three degrees away from the ‘stop’ temperature on the thermostat.

Any help would be appreciated. OH, the system is only 3 1/2 yrs old.

Thanks.

Kerry seeks speedy fix for Turkish-Israeli ties

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is urging Turkish leaders to speedily restore full diplomatic relations with Israel, two American allies the U.S. sees as anchors of stability in an unstable Middle East.

Kerry says Turkish-Israeli cooperation will help tackle challenges across the region.

He spoke after meeting Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu (AH’-meht dah-voot-OH‘-loo). He meets Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan (REH’-jehp TY‘-ihp UR‘-doh-wahn) later Sunday.

Kerry is trying to firm up the Turkish-Israeli rapprochement that President Barack Obama kick-started on a visit to the Jewish state last month.

Kerry travels later Sunday to Israel.

The two nations were once close partners, but the relationship plummeted after a 2010 Israeli raid on a Gaza-bound flotilla. Eight Turks and a Turkish-American died.

Everything You Know About US Oil and Gas is Wrong

By Karl Smith, Contributor Wedged in between my attempts to meet actual professional commitments I have been trying to get a handle on what the Shale Oil and Gas revolution means for the US. There are so many takes, almost everyone is pushing an agenda and those who don’t speak and write in a petrol-head jargon that makes economic analysis read like Hemmingway. Are we really headed for Saudi America? Are the Extraction Analysts right that this is bigger than anything anyone has ever seen? Are the Peak-Oil-Pessimists right, that this is just a minor blip Are the Quant-Pessimists right that demand for NGL cannot support the capital costs of extraction and bankruptcy for must extractors is imminent. As I dig deeper it looks more and more like “everyone is wrong” or at least everyone has working assumptions that are more detailed analysis from someone else shows to be wrong. Take this from Jim Hamilton who is known to the blogosphere and is obviously brilliant and well informed. A bigger factor in the U.S. [Total Oil Production] increase since 2005 has been natural gas plant liquids (hydrocarbons with a higher energy content than methane which can be separated out from methane at natural gas processing facilities) and other liquids (chiefly biofuels). . . . The figure below breaks the U.S. NGL numbers down into specific components. A molecule of ethane has 2 carbon atoms, compared to only one for methane, the basic component in pure natural gas. Although ethane has a higher boiling point and more energy than methane, you’d still have to bring ethane down to a Fahrenheit temperature of 127 degrees below zero to make it a liquid. You can’t drive your car with ethane, and it’s currently almost exclusively used to make ethylene for the chemical industry. In fact you can drive some car on anything from methane to tetracosane (24 carbon atoms). Yet, chances are that your car does currently run on ethanol, which is basically ethane with an oxygen atom stuck on. (OH swapped for H). Now, to use the ethane coming out of the ground it would have to be refined into ethanol and indeed there are refiners who do this. However, they do not sell the ethanol into the gasoline supply because it is illegal to do so. Though no one admits as much even a mild cynic might suspect that it is illegal because ethane-to-ethanol is cheaper than corn-to-ethanol, and much cheaper as ethane prices collapse. Ethane-to-ethanol would also reduce the feedstock for ethane-to-ethylene that the Petrochemical industry uses. This is just one example of the knots in the hydrocarbon web. Another particular example that shows how knotty this is, is that much of what is coming out of the ground in Eagle Ford is pentane. It can be called: lease-condensate, ultra-light crude, naphtha or natural gasoline, depending on who is naming it. Since its very close to the gasoline we use it, it would seem like a great resource. However, at current, its something of a …read more

Marcin Juszkiewicz: Nine years of embedded Linux

Nine years ago I bought Sharp Zaurus SL-5500 as my first Linux PDA. And due to this I am where I am.

I could say that it started two years earlier when I saw PalmOS devices at local geek meetings. But it took me over year before Palm m105… Then was Sony Clie SJ30 — gorgeous device. High resolution, memory card, 16bit colour. Too bad that applications did not make use of it.

So I went for Linux. There were two options: Zaurus or iPaq. Went for former one as it had keyboard. It was good choice.

Quickly started development of packages and joined OpenEmbedded team. Then became one of OpenZaurus developers. After year or something took over release maintenance and released few last versions. 3.5.4(.1) were the best tested releases of OZ ever — I had over hundred testers for each RC image and they provided installation reports, bug reports and fixes. And it had unified installer for whole range of devices (took me several months to get it polished and few guys added own tweaks). When Ångström distribution started I was the one who officially ended OpenZaurus development.

And all that was in free time. But in mean time I created my consulting company. CELF was my first customer 😉

One nice evening I got question on irc and due to that I left dark side of IT and went from PHP programming to embedded Linux full-time. OpenedHand had interesting projects and clients with many devices. Imagine operating system + kernel + Python + GStreamer in 16 megabytes of flash… And I managed to get it done. While working for them I used proper developer boards (not only customer devices) and there were funny moments…

When we worked with ST Microelectronics on NDK-15 (later replaced by NHK-15 from ST Ericsson) I had to merge two kernel trees from two separate teams. Took me 2 days of mangling 20-30MB diffs but got it done. There are people at ST-E which reminded me this during one of Linaro Connects ;D

Also on GUADEC 2007 when we presented new interface for Openmoko phones NDK-15 had to wait for me as no one at stand was able to get it running (U-Boot config needed changes).

But then Intel acquired OpenedHand… The craziest trip of my life was return from London to my parents place. For three months I even had @linux.intel.com email but never used it due to problems with Intel corporate network and Linux (do not ask).

Next was Bug Labs and their BUG device. I cleaned their Poky trees, migrated to latest version and later to use OpenEmbedded directly. Less challenges but I also had few other customers at that time to keep me busy. Some of them were OH customers before and went to me for help.

Time passed, 2010 came. One day Canonical made another attempt to seduce me and this time I decided that it looks like good opportunity so I accepted. Sent BUG 2.0 prototype back to NYC and few weeks later I made crazy train …read more

Chicago: 2014 Chevy Cruze Diesel arrives with 42 mpg for $25,695*

By Zach Bowman

Filed under:

The last time General Motors had a diesel passenger car in the US, it was the 1.8-liter 1986 Chevette. At the 2013 Chicago Auto Show today, GM is unveiling the much-anticipated 2014 Chevrolet Cruze Diesel. The compact bows with a 2.0-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine that boasts 148 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, with full twist coming on at just 2,000 rpm. What’s more, the common-rail, direct-injection diesel features an overboost function that allows the engine to deliver up to 280 lb-ft of torque for 10 seconds at a time. Even with 10 more horsepower and 110 more pound-feet of torque than the available turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder in the Cruze, the 2.0-liter diesel engine can return up to 42 mpg (highway) bolted to its six-speed automatic transmission.

If you’re counting, that figure meets the less powerful Cruze Eco with a six-speed manual transmission. More importantly, the auto transmission Cruze Diesel matches its main competition, the Volkswagen Jetta TDI, in highway fuel economy. The Cruze 2.0 TD (as it will be badged) can also handle up to 20 percent biodiesel (B20), whereas the Jetta is rated only for B5. General Motors has not released city fuel economy for its newest diesel, but we do know how much it will cost you to jump behind the driver’s seat.

GM will kindly ask for $25,695, plus an $810 destination fee. That marks a $2,115 premium over a loaded Cruze LTZ Auto and $2,640 more than the Jetta TDI, though the MSRP will net you a leather interior, 17-inch alloy wheels and an Aero Performance Package, as well as a two-year maintenance plan and five-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty. Compared to the gas-powered Cruze, you also lose a couple cubic feet of rear cargo space thanks to a 17-liter diesel emission fluid tank. That urea fluid, which helps put the clean in clean diesel, will need to be refilled at least every 10,000 miles.

The Cruze’s diesel engine will be built in Kaiserslautern, Germany and the car will be produced starting in April at GM‘s plant in Lordstown, OH. Sales should kick off in May or June and cars will first roll out in 13 select states where GM has had success selling diesel-powered Silverado trucks. If you’re thinking GM did something similar when the Volt was released, you’re right. GM is again targeting buyers who are familiar and interested in a new (well, new since 1986, anyway) technology. This time, though, instead of zero emissions and li-ion, the audience knows that there’s a significant difference between the label and real-world fuel efficiency of diesel vehicles, and so might be persuaded to do the math on higher diesel fuel costs and come to a favorable conclusion.
