PBF Energy Announces Supply Agreement with Continental Resources for Bakken Crude Oil

PARSIPPANY, N.J.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– PBF Energy Inc. (NYS: PBF) announced today the signing of an agreement with Continental Resources Inc. (NYS: CLR) to supply PBF with Bakken crude oil, which will be delivered by rail to PBF‘s double-loop track at its refinery in Delaware City, DE.

Commenting on the transaction, Don Lucey, PBF‘s Chief Commercial Officer, said, “We are pleased to be working directly with Continental Resources, a leader in domestic crude oil production and a major producer and supplier in the Bakken play. We look forward to growing our relationship with them.”

Continental Resources is the largest producer and leaseholder in the Bakken, with significant supply arrangements with refiners on the West Coast, the Gulf Coast, and now the East Coast. Continental Resources President and Chief Operating Officer, Rick Bott, added, “This unique transaction illustrates the emerging shift in the light sweet crude market. In addition to diversifying Continental’s customer base and streamlining our value chain, it allows us to deliver unblended premium Bakken crude to the East Coast – a market that has historically been driven by imports of foreign oil.”

PBF‘s Chief Executive Officer, Tom Nimbley, said, “PBF has made significant investments in acquiring rail cars and developing our East Coast rail delivery infrastructure to increase our access to North American crude oil, which positions PBF to benefit from these cost-advantaged crudes. Delaware City‘s heavy and light crude rail discharge facilities allow us to work directly with producers in Canada and the Mid-continent, like Continental Resources, and provide us with a competitive advantage versus northeast refiners that rely on third parties to deliver North American crude oil.”

PBF also announced that the company opened a new office in Oklahoma City. This office, along with PBF‘s Calgary, Alberta office, will focus on sourcing North American crude oils and feedstocks for the company’s refineries.

Titan In The Line Of Fire As Mining Optimism Cools

By Zacks.com, Contributor

The industrial sector has been hot this year, always a percent or two ahead of the broad market. The reasons for optimism have been sound, from a turn-around in the Chinese economy to the US housing recovery gaining steam. But that optimism may be cooling off and we need look no further than two big name equipment manufacturers to see it unfolding: Caterpillar (CAT) and Deere (DE). And one company in the direct line of fire of a machinery slow-down could be Titan International (TWI) , a global manufacturer of off-highway steel wheels and tires in the agricultural, earthmoving/construction and consumer markets. The mining industry, from metals to iron ore, has also seen earnings and outlooks take a hit recently, with names like Cliffs Natural Resources (CLF) and Joy Global (JOY) being sold as estimates soften. The gold miners are currently one of the lowest ranked industry groups in Zacks classification of 265 industries. Titan generally manufactures both wheels and tires for these markets and provides the value-added service of assembling the completed wheel-tire system. They offer a broad range of different products that are manufactured in relatively short production runs to meet original equipment manufacturers’ specifications and/or aftermarket customer requirements. Special Offer: What you don’t own is just as important as what investments you do own. Top investing experts named names when it comes to securities to avoid in the year ahead. Get the results in this free downloadable report, 24 Widely-Held Investments You Should Sell Now. Earnings Picture Rolling the Wrong Way Despite reporting record annual results on February 25, 2013, the hiccup in Titan’s growth outlook had been foreseen by the analysts since early this year. And missing the fourth quarter consensus EPS estimate of 47 cents by 80% didn’t help. Here’s the view from the Zacks proprietary Price & Consensus chart… Since that earnings report, the Zacks Consensus Estimate for 2013 has dropped by 10.4% to $2.41 per share while that for 2014 plummeted 16.6% to $2.75 per share. It’s worth mentioning the record revenue picture here too. Revenue of $493.6 million represented a 22.5% improvement over the year-ago quarter. The impact was, however, negated by a 28.4% increase in cost of sales that led to a 12.0% fall in gross profit, and a big drop from the year-ago quarter’s 37 cents EPS. Where the Big Wheels Meet the Dirt Decreasing earnings estimates together with a mixed bag of both positive and negative earnings surprise for the past year — producing an average of miss of -9.6% — raises skepticism over Titan International‘s performance in the quarters ahead. Titan is still projected by some analysts to have mid-teens earnings and sales growth. But until the estimate picture stabilizes, it’s probably best to stand aside. Watching how CAT and DE estimates shake out would be a good idea too. Kevin Cook is a Senior Stock Strategist with Zacks.com …read more

Detroit Electric Teases All-Electric Sports Car Ahead of April Debut

By Andrew Wendler

The first rumblings of plans to resurrect the Detroit Electric nameplate surfaced back in 2009, when the group announced a partnership of sorts with Malaysia-based Proton Holdings (then-owners of Lotus) to produce a pair of all-electric vehicles. While many electric-car startups and their founders (paging Elon Musk) spent the following few years under the harsh scrutiny of the public eye and media at large, Detroit Electric maintained radio silence, eventually falling off the radar. In the interim, the company claims to have been carrying out “relentless research and engineering development,” all while many manufactures were beginning to scale back their EV efforts. Undeterred, Detroit Electric returned to the airwaves this week with several major announcements and a shadowy image of what it claims to be its all-electric, two-seat, limited-edition sports car.

Detroit Electric says the car, which we believe makes use of the Lotus Exige‘s foundation, is set to begin production in Michigan this August. The company, whose headquarters really are located in Detroit, says it plans to create 180 jobs in the region within the next 12 months. Detroit Electric has plans for a whole line of cars, too, its dedicated assembly facility capable of eventually supporting an annual production volume of 2500 units.

Chairman Albert Lam, who resurrected the Detroit Electric moniker in 2008, and CEO of North American operations Don Graunstadt both are former Lotus employees. Lam served as the CEO of Lotus Engineering and executive director of Lotus Cars, and Graunstadt was an executive at Lotus Engineering. Such lineage lends further credence to our belief that DE’s upcoming offspring makes use of Lotus components.

For now Detroit Electric won’t comment on, well, anything, except to inform us that it’s developed its “own EV-powertrain technologies that will feature in all future Detroit Electric products.” The brand says it’ll offer a sneak peak in Detroit in early April before the official unveiling a few weeks later at the Shanghai auto show, where it also will make an announcement about a major partnership with a global automaker. This ought be good.

A new Debian-based distribution

Debian Development

Disclaimer: This post just sums up a concept for a new distribution which matches certain ideals. It is not the announcement of a new distribution. These are just abstract ideas. (However, if there is high interest in a project like this, it might of course develop into something real…)

I have been involved in Debian and Ubuntu for a long time now. When Ubuntu started, I was a Debian Testing user, and I immediately switched to Ubuntu when it started, because I liked the idea of a short-release-cycle, user-centric company-supported Debian based Linux distribution. However, I am now back to Debian for a long time, because of many reasons which nearly all had to do with Canonical policy. But this is not a post to criticise Ubuntu, so I’ll leave out most of that part. I am highly disappointed on how Ubuntu develops – not only the technical decisions are at least questionable, but also the social and community part is not that great anymore. There is a high asymetry in the relation between Canonical and other developers, Ubuntu mailinglists basically don’t create meaningful results, they sometimes even mutate to a Canonical Q/A session. The community does not seem to have a large influence on decisions about core services, and it can’t have it if there are things developed behind closed doors. (This is all, of course my subjective impression)

But really nobody can argue against the basic idea of Ubuntu and the great things Ubuntu created Also, many of the processes Ubuntu uses to develop the distribution are just great and well-working, as well as there is a highly active community around it. As you simply cannot argue with Canonical to change their policy (they are a company and have hidden plans, also they have every right to apply whatever policy they want), the natural way in any OSS project would be to fork it. But doing that blindly would just create another distribution, which would almost certainly vanish again soon, since there are already many Ubuntu derivatives which cover many use-cases using an Ubuntu base.

I discussed this stuff with Daniel some time ago, and we did some kind of brainstorming about what a perfect distribution would look like, from the perspective of a developer who wants to use a Debian-based distribution.

Here is a list of points which would define such a project:

  • Every available package complies with the DFSG and Debian policy.
  • Packages of DISTRO stay in close sync with Debian packages, changes are preferrably applied in Debian. DISTRO might work as a playground for new technology while Debian is in freeze.
  • DISTRO stays as close to upstream as possible. It applies as less patches as possible, to deploy desktop environments which look like the thing upstream intended it to look like. Changes for DISTRO are developed upstream and only applied downstream if doing that doesn’t make sense or changes are distribution-specific and can’t be abstracted.
  • All desktop environments are treated equally. There is no preferred DE.
  • DISTRO stays in sync with release …read more

NYT's Tesla Model S trouble report is "fake," says Elon Musk

By Sebastian Blanco

Tesla Model S

Filed under:

Remember that episode of Top Gear, where the notoriously anti-EV crew pushed a Tesla Roadster to show what would happen if the car’s battery had run out of juice? And then Tesla got all litigious and filed suit (which the company eventually lost)? Well, we might be in for another public scuffle about the merits of electric vehicles.

The New York Times recently sent John Broder out in a Model S between the two new Superchargers on the east coast, located in Newark, DE and Milford, CT. Since, as Broder notes, the stations are “some 200 miles apart” the 85-kWh battery in the Model S should be able to make the drive. The EPA rates this model at 265 miles, after all. Heck, even the 60-kWh mid-range model has a 208-mile range. The trick, as we all know, is that your mileage may vary.

Following a 49-minute visit to the Supercharger in Delaware for a full charge (well, at least seeing a screen that read “charge complete”), Broder kept on driving, but discovered that, after 68 miles of driving, he had lost 85 miles of estimated range. He shifted over to energy conservation mode (driving slow, turning off the cabin heat, etc.). He writes:

Nearing New York, I made the first of several calls to Tesla officials about my creeping range anxiety. The woman who had delivered the car told me to turn off the cruise control; company executives later told me that advice was wrong. All the while, my feet were freezing and my knuckles were turning white.

The report caused TSLA to drop 2.5 percent to $38.27 (it has since regained some ground and sits at $38.42) and got a response from Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who tweeted that, “NYTimes article about Tesla range in cold is fake. Vehicle logs tell true story that he didn’t actually charge to max & took a long detour.”

Tesla has promised it will post an article later today that “will refute Broder’s version of what happened, with data points pulled from the car’s logs.” Stay tuned for an update after that report is published.

Cinnamon proposed to replace GNOME Shell as default DE on Fedora 19

By finid

It was lobbying by the GNOME devs that made GNOME 3 the default on Fedora, but now it seems that somebody has had enough. That somebody has proposed making the Cinnamon the default desktop environment on Fedora 19.

I don’t blame him.

I’ve always been of the opinion that as far a desktop computing goes, and how people interface or interact with their desktop, that there’s something fundamentally wrong with GNOME Shell. It sits atop beautiful technology, but that UI just doesn’t compute. And the problem is that the GNOME devs are not willing to accept that simple fact.

But if this proposal is accepted, they will lose a major distro and, hopefully, will be forced to rethink the GNOME Shell.

According to Eric Smith, the guy behind this proposal:

The Gnome 3 interface is substantially different that the traditional desktop interfaces on both Linux and Windows. While it is good that there is research into new user interface concepts, many users prefer to have a traditional interface that they are accustomed to. … I’m not trying to start (or continue) a flame war here, so I won’t state any of my own criticisms of Gnome Shell here, but I will observe that a number of very high profile people in the Linux community, such as Linus Torvalds and Alan Cox, have publicly announce that due to problems with Gnome Shell they are switching to a different desktop and/or Linux distribution.

I submit the proposition that it is easier for a user doing a new Fedora install to start with a traditional desktop, and switch to the Gnome Shell if they prefer that, than to start with Gnome Shell and switch to a traditional desktop.

His proposal gets my vote.
