Does Caligula deserve his bad rep?
By hnn
Our modern idea of tyranny was born 2,000 years ago. It is with the reign of the Caligula – the third Roman emperor, assassinated in 41 AD, before he had reached the age of 30 – that all the components of mad autocracy come together for the first time.
In fact, the ancient Greek word “tyrannos” (from which our term comes) was originally a fairly neutral word for a sole ruler, good or bad.
Of course, there had been some very nasty monarchs and despots before Caligula. But, so far as we know, none of his predecessors had ever ticked all the boxes of a fully fledged tyrant, in the modern sense.
There was his (Imelda Marcos-style) passion for shoes, his megalomania, sadism and sexual perversion (including incest, it was said, with all three of his sisters), to a decidedly odd relationship with his pets. One of his bright ideas was supposed to have been to make his favourite horse a consul – the chief magistrate of Rome….

Customized pest control system
By Johnc00l
First of all I will start by saying That I don’t have any pets so it does not matter if this system would affect pets. I might get fish at some point but I doubt that the system can penetrate the water or even the glass to affect the fish.
I want to improve on the ultrasonic devices that emit a sound that is not audible by the human ear. Some of them work like the Black and Decker ones. but some pests might build an immunity to the device at some point or another but getting use to it.
The house is made from concrete so there is no need to worry about any pests between the walls or under the floor.
The idea is to create an audio file that has many frequencies. I need help on how to create frequencies that will play one after the other like tracks on a CD in around one or 2 min then it would loop again.
I want to place speakers all over the house. Inside and outside. So I need to know what type of speakers can play these frequencies and I will need the outside speaker to be heat and humidity resistant as the temperature and humidity are always high even at night.
I want to play the sound from a stereo type system so that I can play the frequencies at an db that I want. Even if I want to go up to 500db just to make sure that no pests will ever think of visiting me.
The targets are all animals and insects.
I know that some frequencies can even loosen grim or dirt. But it might not be safe as it might shake things out of there place. But if you have some advice on this then share it with me.
I heard that some frequencies can also kill bacteria. Is it possible to use this in my system as well.
I also want to put a device in the yard outside that is connected to my system and it is like a pipe inside the ground. This is to emit the frequencies underground to irritate the insects and the please advice on what type of device it should be (it needs to be heat and water resistant).
Since this might be bad for the health, the system will only be operational during the absence of the home tenants. But the outside system might remain on.

Walmart worker says chiding customer for leaving dog in car cost her job
A Walmart worker in Canada claims that speaking up for a doggie in distress cost her her job.
Carla Cheney, a former Kemptville, Ottawa, Walmart pharmacy technician, told CBC News she was worried about a canine left unattended in a truck by a customer. But when she confronted the customer instead of first reporting it to her supervisor, she apparently broke the retail giant’s protocol – not to mention ticking off the customer.
“He told me it was none of my business and I said that that was fine, that if I saw him do it again I would just call the police next time,” Cheney said. “He said he was no longer going to be shopping at that Walmart, and I said, ‘OK.'”
A Walmart Canada spokeswoman said there are guidelines for employees to follow when it comes to identifying dangers, including those involving pets. But the company said the associate was not fired for “trying to help a dog in a locked car.”
“We require our associates to follow these guidelines, which include reporting any safety concerns to a member of management, and engaging customers in a manner that is respectful,” Felicia Fefer told the CBC.
Walmart Canada also said in a statement that they will be posting signs in the front of their stores across Canada advising customers of the dangers of leaving kids and pets in hot vehicles.
A Facebook group dedicated to supporting Cheney, “Animal Rights for Kemptville Walmart,” had more than 12,000 members as of Friday afternoon.

Nonprofit called 'Pet Food Stamps' helps owners provide for pets in tough times
If you believe the economy is improving, you’ve likely never met someone who still can’t afford a can of cat food.
Marc Okon, who has worked as a stockbroker, entrepreneur and business consultant, has a friend from his old neighborhood in Bayside, Queens, N.Y. He’s known her since age 10. Her parents died. She fell on hard times. And the economy hasn’t come back for her yet.
“She told me she sometimes fed her cat before herself,” Mr. Okon said in a telephone interview.
In February, as headlines raged about a strengthening economy, Mr. Okon started a privately funded nonprofit called Pet Food Stamps. People who are already on government assistance can apply for free pet food.
The group has been swamped with more applications than his staff of a dozen people can readily process. Most applicants send letters detailing how they lost their jobs to outsourcing, their homes to foreclosure or their health to disease or accident.

UGA research finds sterilized dogs live longer
Sandy Dog Nannies helps take bite out of superstorm for displaced pets
Burlington, Vt., is a long way from New York and the Jersey Shore, but when Joan Shannon read about the storm ravaged victims of Hurricane Sandy and their struggles to care for their pets she knew she had to get involved.
“I thought that there was probably a need for temporary shelter for the dogs,” she said, explaining her efforts were aimed as much at pet owners who found themselves in an unimaginable situation.
Hundreds of families were left homeless, and unable to take their dogs with them were forced to leave their beloved pets behind in the unheated remnants of their houses.
Shannon founded Sandy Dog Nannies, an organization of volunteers willing to temporarily foster dogs affected by the storm. Dog owners in need are asked to provide a profile of their hound which is then shared with approved foster families that have been vetted by the organization. The dog’s owner then reviews the applications and reports on the potential foster homes and selects the most appropriate offer.
Sandy Dog Nannies couldn’t have come at a better time for Debbie Blair. Like so many, she lost almost everything in the storm. Her home in Breezy Point was battered by flood waters and high winds — and while she fared better than some of her neighbors she was struggling to look after her 11-year-old Cairn terrier, Jessie.
“There’s such a peace of mind that I have that I know my dog is safe and being well taken care of,” said Blair. “Dogs pick up on all our stress as well, so she was removed from all the craziness that was going on in my house. It’s just a blessing.”
The initial idea of Sandy Dog Nannies was to transport the dogs to the green mountains of Vermont, placing them with willing families. However, Shannon quickly discovered that while storm victims were crying out for help they wanted their faithful hounds in close proximity so they could visit. Debbie Blair‘s terrier was placed with Kerry Madden in Manhattan. “I was guaranteeing them that this dog would be well taken care of and I wanted them to take care of their needs,” said Madden. Little Jessie now enjoys thrice daily walks along the sidewalk with Madden’s two other dogs and Blair can concentrate on rebuilding her home knowing her dog is safe.
It will be months, and in some cases years before some of the neighborhoods impacted by Sandy are rebuilt.
“Nobody anticipates being in the position that these folks are in where there are just no good options,” said Shannon. “If we have given somebody an option, we’ve been successful.”
It’s an example of people helping people, and man’s best friend — at perhaps their greatest time of need.
