Review: Peazip 5 decompresses everything

Peazip is one of the most versatile file compression and archiving utilities out there—possibly the most versatile—and it’s free. It’s also quite easy to use and offers the same features found in programs such as WinZip and WinRAR such as context menu integration, passwords, command line usage, etc.

Peazip supports every compressed archive format I’m aware of: 7Zip, ARC, GZ, TAR, ACE, RAR, etc. There’s also support for both ISO and UDF disc images and Linux package formats such as DEB, RPM, PET/PUP, and SLP. As a bonus, you can open Mac HFS DMG files. There are more, but the point is that there’s little out there in the way of compressed file you can’t browse and extract from.

As you can tell from the file type associations dialog, Peazip supports a lot of formats.

While I’ve always appreciated the effort that goes into this piece of free software, I’ve also installed, then uninstalled Peazip several times over the years because of operational and performance issues. This has left me using WinRAR, which while a bit old-school looking, is rock-solid and fast. Version 5 of Peazip seems quite a bit more stable, but it still has a tendency to not close and launch 100% smoothly when you’re dealing with multiple instances. Also, the progress bar is still inaccurate, claiming far less progress than as actually been made. Several times, it was only 25% across when the task completed.

Best free CD/Data Burner Software?

By hedgeclippers

I just changed laptops as I realized one other laptop was better than the other for dial up in emergencies. When I did that I wiped the hard drives of each laptop as I wanted to switch drives as one drive was bought new and each laptop while being the same brand and model had different things installed that needed different software.

I thought I still had Nero software and still might find my old copy that I have but so far haven’t been able to find it so I could re-install Nero. This being an old laptop it probably will be going out the door as soon as I secure enough funds for a better laptop. For now though it will do for what I need it for but occasionally I may need to copy files onto a cdr or create an ISO disk that will start setup automatically for Linux. I did a bit of research and found a few potential free open source programs for Windows but would like opinions of what is good out there and is free of adware and spyware. Thanks for your help!

Horizon Science Achieves EFSA Status for Benecarb

Blood glucose lowering ingredient to be marketed in Europe

MELBOURNE, Australia–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Australian company Horizon Science is celebrating another important milestone for its value added food ingredient Benecarb, which has received approval to be marketed in Europe.

The European Food Safety Authority has determined that Benecarb’s safety profile is substantially equivalent to molasses, creating immediate market opportunities for European food and beverage manufacturers. Benecarb has previously secured GRAS (Generally Recognised As Safe) status in the US.

Benecarb has been proven to significantly lower the blood glucose response to carbohydrate intake. Benecarb has a significantly higher ORAC1 value compared to green tea, providing a high source of natural polyphenols and antioxidants. Benecarb can be applied to a wide range of carbohydrate matrices in different food and beverage applications, improving blood glucose response and thus providing healthier carbohydrate metabolism. It can be used in a wide range of foods including cereals, baked goods, soft drinks, juices, energy drinks, meal replacement bars and sweeteners.

Horizon Science‘s first commercial application of Benecarb is LoGiCane™, the world’s first all-natural low GI cane sugar, making it a healthier alternative to normal sugar. Recent testing at Oxford Brookes University—an internationally accredited GI testing facility operating to ISO standards—has shown Benecarb reduces the GI of a sugar from 71 (high GI) to 50 (low GI), a 30 per cent reduction versus the sugar tested without Benecarb.

“Achieving EFSA status for Benecarb creates a significant commercial opportunity for Horizon Science to license its patented ingredients to food and beverage manufacturers seeking to improve the nutritional health profile of their products,” said Arvind Sridharan, CEO, Horizon Science.

Horizon Science Director David Sinclair, Professor, Genetics Department at Harvard Medical School, said, “Polyphenols are increasingly being seen to address consumer health issues, and are a major driver of innovation in the food and beverage manufacturing space.”

Gunnar Weikert, Horizon Science Director and Chairman of Inventages, one of the world’s largest life-sciences, nutrition and wellness focused venture capital funds, said, “As the rate of obesity and diabetes increases around the globe, products like Benecarb can help improve consumers’ diet and help them live a healthier lifestyle. Our investment in Horizon Science is being validated by recent initiatives of large food and beverage manufacturers to lower the glycemic impact of their products.”

CirTran Relieved of $1.4 Million in Royalties and Debt Obligations Involving Playboy Energy Drink in Settlement

SALT LAKE CITY–(BUSINESS WIRE)– CirTran Corporation (OTCBB: CIRC), an international contract manufacturer of energy beverages and consumer products, said today that it has been relieved of approximately $1.4 million in accrued royalties and other debt obligations claimed by former Play Beverages‘ partners involving Playboy Energy Drink line after a settlement. This settlement will improve CirTran’s bottom line by that amount.

CirTran President Iehab J. Hawatmeh said “the Play Beverages Parties,” including Bev Group, LLC, CirTran Beverage Corporation, CirTran Corporation, Fadi Nora and himself, settled with “the LIB-MP parties,” including LIB-MP Beverage, LLC, American Sales and Merchandising, LLC, and individuals Warner K. Depuy, Michael Liberty and Jeffrey Pollack.

Under the agreement, the parties exchanged mutual general releases without payment by any party of any amounts to any other. Accordingly, Play Beverages Parties was relieved of the $1,375,618 payment obligation to the LIB-MP parties. .

Mr. Hawatmeh said that “the LIB-MP parties” had filed the petition that forced PlayBev into involuntary bankruptcy, but in December, 2012, the U.S. Bankruptcy Court (District of Utah) vacated the bankruptcy, freeing PlayBev to take legal actions to protect the product license granted for its Playboy Energy Drink.

That was the first “three consecutive major legal victories for ‘the Play Beverages Parties’,” he said, setting the stage for this settlement. “Now we can go back to work to regain the momentum we had in establishing Playboy Energy Drink a ‘player’ in the international marketplace.”

Introduced in 2008, Playboy Energy Drink is manufactured and distributed exclusively by CirTran Beverage Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of CirTran Corporation under a product license from Playboy Enterprises to Play Beverages. It is currently available in more than 20 countries.

Canon Virginia Named as the First Manufacturer to Earn Responsible Recycling (R2) Certification

MELVILLE, N.Y–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, Canon Virginia, Inc. (CVI), is the first original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to achieve Responsible Recycling Practices for Electronics Recyclers (R2) certification. This certification is a result of an independent audit of CVI’s facilities in Newport News, Va., confirming that it’s facilities meet the R2 Standard, a comprehensive set of best management practices governing the environmental, health, safety and security aspects of the electronics recycling industry.

Electronic manufacturing companies typically employ third-party recyclers, however, the majority of the recycling at the CVI facility is done on site. This practice helps to reduce the environmental footprint of the product and is another example of Canon’s dedication to maximizing efficiency and environmental practices. While other recycling companies have been recipients of the R2 Certification, CVI is the first OEM to receive this distinction.

Achieving R2 certification is a major accomplishment and supports our commitment to the environment,” said Toru Nishizawa, president and chief executive officer, Canon Virginia. “We work very hard to ensure the recycling side of our business complements Canon’s research and development efforts to help minimize the environmental impact of our products. As an OEM, Canon is combining manufacturing and recycling under one roof to strengthen our profile and offer a unique business value to our customers and society.”

R2 is a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency-recognized accreditation standard that helps to ensure electronics recyclers remain accountable for their processes while also helping to protect supply chain employees, and others, who are exposed to e-waste. The R2 audit involves a seven-step process that evaluates over 50 areas of operational performance. The certification ensures the highest levels of compliance in environmental practices, procedures and data security and implements strict recycling and material disposal regulations.

This certification, covering the Canon facilities in Virginia responsible for the testing, refurbishment and repair of returned copiers, printers and cameras, is one example of Canon’s dedication to maximizing sound environmental practices while continually looking for ways to reduce consumption throughout all aspects of the business. Recently, Canon U.S.A., Inc. became one of the first electronic equipment manufacturers with qualifying products in the new imaging equipment category of EPEAT®, a global registry for greener electronics. CVI’s R2 Certification helps support Canon’s efforts to promote various environmental initiatives more effectively throughout the product life-cycle, supported by Canon U.S.A., Inc.’s Environmental Management System and ISO 14001 certificate. CACI Organization Achieves ISO® 28000 Certification for Supply Chain Security

First U.S. Company to Obtain This International Credential

ARLINGTON, Va.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– CACI International Inc (NYSE: CACI) announced today the achievement of the first accredited ISO 28000 certification in the United States ensuring supply chain security management. Combined with the company’s ISO 27001 Information Security Management System certification, CACI now offers clients assured solutions for supply chain management that no other U.S. company can provide. These certifications strengthen CACI‘s positioning in its Logistics and Material Readiness and Cyber markets.

Supply chains provide goods and services, such as food and medicine, that impact every American. Without a comprehensive security framework in place, global supply chains are vulnerable to risks such as denial of service, counterfeiting, corrupted and stolen data, material theft, and delivery delays. Because they have become targets of mounting cyber and conventional attacks and many supply elements are now outsourced, safeguarding supply chains is central to national security.

The ISO 28000 certification demonstrates that CACI has developed a mature, end-to-end risk management program (including supply chain), with a focus on both quality and security in the management of information technology assets. CACI‘s Supply Chain Security Framework uses proven products and services that advance supply chain security, minimize disruption to client supply chains, and provide for rapid restoration after a catastrophic event. The ISO 27001 certification complements this by demonstrating that CACI has the ability to ensure that security controls are established across a wide range of business areas, such as continuity management, asset management, physical and network security, and standards for employees and external parties.

CACI is also a thought leader in supply chain security. As co-sponsor of the annual Asymmetric Threats symposia on national security issues, CACI supported the 2010 Asymmetric Threats symposium on challenges to the global supply chain and published the symposium proceedings, which can be found on www.asymmetric.net.

According to John Mengucci, CACI Chief Operating Officer and President of U.S. Operations, “Because supply chains have become targets of mounting cyber, as well as conventional, attacks, protecting them is central to America’s national security. CACI‘s certification in ISO 28000 offers our clients significant assurance that our supply chain solutions will provide the security needed to safeguard these missions.”
