Colorado's Newest Luxury Ranch Boasts Forbes 5-Star Lineage, Opens This Week

By Larry Olmsted, Contributor

I’ve written here at Forbes.com before about one of my favorite resorts in the world, The Broadmoor, in Colorado Springs, CO. This historic luxury property is one of the only triple Forbes 5-Star winners, with the highest possible ranking for lodging, food and spa. In fact, it is the longest running property in the world with a 5-Star ranking for lodging, going back more than half a century (it’s also in its fourth decade of consecutive AAA 5-Diamonds). But this week the Broadmoor enters a new era with the grand opening of its entirely new sister resort, the Ranch at Emerald Valley. …read more

Need Guidance: confused on codes for smoke alarms/CO detectors

By TK421

I own a two story home built in 1984. Originally, the home had a single smoke detector in the downstairs hallway and a single smoke detector in the upstairs hallway. Both are wired into a single 15A circuit.

Now I am remodeling, adding to the second floor. As part of the remodel, the county is telling me I need to have a smoke alarm in each room and a CO detector on each floor. Do I have to rewire the 15A circuit to include a wired smoke detector in each bedroom? That’s a lot of work (and drywall) I hadn’t planned on.

And what about the CO detectors? Do those need to be wired in as well? I haven’t even begun to shop around and I know nothing about the detectors. This is my first stop. I figured I would ask first.

If I can drop the circuit and just slap a smoke detector with a 9 volt on the ceiling of each bedroom, that would be nice and easy.

Islet Sciences Announces Cell Transplant Journal’s Release on Novel Methods of Isolating Piglet Islets

NEW YORK–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Islet Sciences, Inc., (ISLT) a clinical stage company engaged in the research, development and commercialization of therapeutics in the field of diabetes, announced today that Cell Transplant Journal released on novel methods of isolating piglet islets, a technology owned by Islet Sciences.

“This release is another validator of our approach to tackling this worldwide disease,” stated John Steel, Islet Sciences Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. “We continue to make solid important strides in executing our business strategy and this paper represents another clear milestone. Importantly, with our long term supply agreement with Spring Point Project, an FDA approved facility for porcine tissue, this novel methodology for potential production of unlimited islet cells, provides a crucial foundation for our goal to provide islet cell replacement therapy for persons with insulin dependent diabetes. Islet Sciences initial targeted group are diabetics that have had kidney transplants and may benefit from the opportunity to have islet therapy to augment outcomes.”

“This work is exciting in that we have developed a novel method of producing viable piglet islets that is reproducible and scalable in doses of islets that will be required to transplant into patients with insulin dependent diabetes,” stated Dr. Jonathan Lakey, Chief Scientific Officer and Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of Islet Sciences.

Below is a link and copy of the Abstract:

In vitro maturation of viable islets from partially digested young pig pancreas

Abstract

Isolation of islets from market size pig is costly, with considerable islet losses from fragmentation occurring during isolation and tissue culture. Fetal and neonatal pigs yield insulin unresponsive islet-like cell clusters that become glucose responsive after extended periods of time. Both issues impact clinical applicability and commercial scale-up. We have focused our efforts on a cost-effective scalable method of isolating viable insulin responsive islets. Young Yorkshire pigs (mean age 20 days, range 4-30 days) underwent rapid pancreatectomy (<5 min) and partial digestion using low dose collagenase, followed by in vitro culture at 37°C and 5% CO₂ for up to 14 days. Islet viability was assessed using FDA/PI or Newport Green and function assessed using glucose stimulated insulin release (GSIR) assay. Islet

Exelis and NASA complete flight campaign tests of carbon dioxide measuring instrument

Active LIDAR from space would contribute to long-term study of global CO₂

ROCHESTER, N.Y.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– ITT Exelis (NYS: XLS) and the NASA Langley Research Center completed a flight campaign in March that measured carbon dioxide over various surfaces and conditions as a step toward taking active global measurements from space.

Using a NASA DC-8 aircraft and an instrument built by Exelis called the Multifunctional Fiber Laser LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging), the team took carbon dioxide measurements from various, challenging environments. The information was gathered from high altitudes over fresh and aged snow surfaces, ocean surfaces in high winds, tall coastal and forest conditions, and in the presence of thin cirrus clouds.

“The science community has stated clearly, the ability to improve climate models depends directly on our ability to obtain more accurate CO₂ measurements,” said Eric Webster, vice president of Exelis weather systems. “Using our active LIDAR system from space would enable significant improvements in global mapping of carbon sources and sinks and thus improve climate models. Results over several years and dozens of flights, including this campaign, prove our solution works and would provide decision-makers with more accurate information.”

In 2007, the National Research Council released its decadal survey recommending the use of an active LIDAR system to provide new information on carbon dioxide processes over all regions of the Earth, during night and day. NASA Langley Research Center is evaluating the Exelis instrument to determine its effectiveness for the mission. The Exelis instrument is based on commercially viable fiber communications technology, which makes it lower cost and risk than other approaches.

Using active LIDAR is important for researchers because current passive instruments for measuring CO₂ from space cannot take measurements at night, at high latitudes where major cities are located, or through clouds, which limits effectiveness. Active instruments also take more accurate measurements in the lower atmosphere where increases and decreases in carbon dioxide take place more often.

Exelis has won three related technology development grants from the NASA Earth Science Technology Office, and is on its ninth task under an indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity contract with the NASA Langley Research Center for evaluation of LIDAR technology. The most recent flight campaign also included …read more

A3 Sportback E-Tron plug-in hybrid confirmed for US

By Sebastian Blanco

Audi A3 e-tron

Filed under:

We got our first look at the new Audi A3 Sportback E-Tron concept at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show earlier this month. Today, Audi confirmed that a production version of the plug-in hybrid five-door will go on sale in the US at some point.

Audi calls PHEV technology a “practical first step towards electrified driving” because having a gas tank on board “mitigates the range anxiety concerns associated with most full battery electric vehicles.” While not exactly transferable to the production version, the A3 E-Tron concept had a powertrain that offered 204 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Fuel economy figures, even early estimates unverified by the EPA, were not discussed this time around, but an earlier press release said the concept’s turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine burns 1.5 liters of fuel per 100 km (156.81 US miles per gallon) using a six-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Last year, Audi discussed how it was testing the A3 E-Tron in Golden, CO with employees it called E-Pilots. You can watch the feel-good video – noticeably lacking details on the car itself but full of information about people’s petshere.

Good Times Announces Fresh New TV Campaign

GOLDEN, Colo.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Good Times Restaurants Inc. (NAS: GTIM) today announced that it is breaking a new television campaign next week that will begin to tell a brand story of the lengths that Good Times goes to in order to find the best fresh, all natural ingredients possible for its products.

Boyd Hoback, President & CEO said, “With limited budgets we challenged Tom Evans and Larae Netten, who have worked on Good Times‘ advertising for over fifteen years, to come up with an idea for a campaign that allows us to tell our unique product story in a totally unconventional way, but that is consistent with our heritage of fun, irreverent advertising.”

The Company said that this is the first foray back into television advertising in three years and that it is focusing predominantly on cable programming in its media buy. The campaign will highlight the introduction of Hand Breaded Springer Mountain Farms All Natural Chicken Tenderloins, specialty Meyer Natural Angus beef burgers and $2 Hatch Valley New Mexico Green Chile Breakfast Burritos.

Tom Evans, owner of Stamen Pistil Advertising and Design, added, “Our goal was to create an advertising campaign that feels decidedly hand-crafted with simple music and illustrations telling the story instead of more traditional live action advertising. We hired Jon Cannell, well known as an illustrator and designer, to draw our stories, then put those illustrations in the hands of Jason Metter, of Blue Fruit, Inc., to bring them to life using computer-based motion graphics techniques. Tom Lecher of Echo Boys, Minneapolis, arranged the music. Good Times is a highly likable brand, and this advertising reflects that quality even as it drives home a pointed product story with clearly delineated points of difference, and paints an honest picture of Good Times as a highly principled company.”

Stamen Pistil Advertising and Design is a creative branding, advertising, design and marketing communications firm founded by Tom Evans and Larae Netten in Evergreen, CO. Tom Evans provided the creative, as well as directed and wrote the campaign and Larae Netten provided art direction.

Good Times is a regional chain of quick service restaurants located primarily in Colorado providing a menu of high-quality all-natural hamburgers, 100% all-natural tenderloin sandwiches, fresh frozen custard, fresh-cut fries, fresh lemonades and other unique offerings. Pulse Electronics' DSL Splitter Module with Lightning and Power Fault Protection

Pulse Electronics’ DSL Splitter Module with Lightning and Power Fault Protection

6-pin module is interchangeable for all global telecom standards

SAN DIEGO–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Pulse Electronics Corporation (NYS: PULS) , a leading provider of electronic components, introduces a central office (CO) VDSL2 splitter module with optional lightning and power fault protection. The module is designed with 6 pins, instead of the standard 4 pins. This enables a protective device, such as a sidactor, to be added on the board underneath the module and eliminates the need for a separate protection rack card, freeing up space for an extra multichannel card or to increase airflow for additional cooling. The pin location allows a fast-acting secondary over-voltage protector to be used to protect the filter from surge effects while maintaining good VDSL2 performance. The location may also help to meet ITU and Telcordia coordination requirements with any installed primary protectors, enabling selection of suitable secondary protectors to accommodate different countries and markets.

“Adding surge protection is becoming increasingly necessary as protection standards evolve, and being able to reduce the splitter module size is important as component density increases,” explained Ronan Kelly, Pulse Electronics broadband product manager. “Pulse’s new CO splitter module offers the customer a product to address these needs.”

Pulse Electronics‘ B8841PNL CO module is part of a family of products that have the same 6 pin footprint, so modules can be interchanged to address a specific target market without changing the rack cabinet connectivity. This pin configuration accommodates all global standards and is well-suited for use in the Americas, Europe, and Asia. It meets requirements for ETSI 600 ohm ADSL to VDSL2 applications and China YD/T 1187-2006 ADSL 600 ohms. The modules are used on a rack card in a DSLAM or within roadside cabinets to combine or split the POTS from DSL data.

The modules are sold in trays. Lead-time is typically 8-10 weeks. The part is production released and available for orders. More information on Pulse’s B8841PNL product family can be found on datasheet http://productfinder.pulseeng.com/products/datasheets/B1005.pdf located on the Pulse website at http://www.pulseelectronics.com/B8841PNL.

CAPScall of the Week: Clovis Oncology

By Sean Williams, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

For years, satirical late-night TV host Stephen Colbert has been running a series on his show called “Better Know a District,” which highlights one of the 435 U.S. congressional districts and its representative. While I am no Stephen Colbert, I am brutally inquisitive when it comes to the 5,000-plus listed companies on the U.S. stock exchanges.

That’s why I’ve made it a weekly tradition to examine one seldom-followed company within the Motley Fool CAPS database, and make a CAPScall of outperform or underperform on that company.

For this week’s round of “Better Know a Stock,” I’m going to take a closer look at Clovis Oncology .

What Clovis Oncology does
As Clovis’ name would imply, there’s no smoke-and-mirror tricks here regarding what it does: It’s a biotechnology company engaged in researching anti-cancer compounds. It has three compounds currently in its pipeline: CO-1686 — which is an oral phase I/II epidermal growth factor receptor, or EGFR, inhibitor for the treatment of non-small-cell lung cancer, or NSCLC — that it’s partnered with Roche in developing; Rucaparib — which is a poly ADP-ribose polymerase, or PARP, inhibitor in phase I/II trials for ovarian and breast cancer; and a preclinical cKIT inhibitor for gastrointestinal stromal tumors that it’s partnered with Array BioPharma on.

In Clovis’ most recently ended fourth quarter, it reported a loss of $21.1 million compared to a loss of just $14.9 million in the year-ago period as its total cash level rose modestly to $144.1 million from the $140.2 million it ended with in 2011.

Whom it competes against
This is one of those cases where I say there are a ton of competitors in NSCLC, but few that target the T790M mutation that CO-1686 is being developed to treat. In fact, there are no FDA-approved treatments to specifically target the mutation at the moment. However, that may change very shortly as Boehringer Ingelheim does have an experimental drug known as Afatinib under an accelerated FDA review for EGFR mutation-positive NSCLC. With Clovis still early in its development, Afatinib could have a chance to clean up before CO-1686 even gets to late-stage enrollment.

Something similar can be said for Clovis’ competition in breast cancer with regard to PARP inhibitors. However, unlike with NSCLC, advancements in PARP inhibitors are still very slow, so a drug like Rucaparib that is still being studied in phase 1 trials has just as much chance of success as AbbVie‘s Veliparib, which is being tested as a combination PARP inhibiting therapy in phase 1/2 trials.

The call
After carefully reviewing Clovis Oncology‘s prospects, I’ve decided to place a CAPScall of underperform on the company for a number of reasons.

The primary reason for my distaste of this recent run relates to its complete failure with CO-101 for metastatic pancreatic cancer. The results from the phase 1/2 trial were noted by CEO Patrick Mahaffy to be “even more ambiguous than we could have imagined,” as CO-101 was …read more
