Acer's already prepping a leaner, lighter 8-inch Iconia W3 Windows tablet, report says

Acer’s Iconia W3 is still the one and only 8-inch Windows tablet in town, but it appears that the company isn’t sitting on its heels after gaining that head start. A new report claims that the pint-sized slate is slated for a refresh this September, mere months after its unveiling in late June.

The new and improved Acer Iconia W3 would be a slight alteration to correct some of the issues that retailers and reviewers had with the original iteration, according to Tweakers.net. Acer Netherlands spokesperson Sterre Swank told the site that the tablet’s refresh will be thinner and lighter than the version available now.

Tweakers.net also reports that the twisted nematic display of the original could also be replaced with an upgraded IPS screen, though Swank did not confirm that particular change. IPS displays tend to have better color vibrancy and much better viewing angles than TN displays. IPS displays, however, cost more than TN screens, but that hasn’t prevented IPS displays from showing up in low-cost slates like the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HD.

In our time with the Acer Iconia W3, we observed some visible pixels on the 8.1-inch, 1280-by-800 display but it was nowhere near bad enough to be a dealbreaker.

All of a sudden, Nissan doesn't have enough Leafs to go around

By Sebastian Blanco

2013 nissan leaf

Filed under:

March: 2,236. April: 1,937. May: 2,138. June: 2,225.

Those are the US sales totals for the Nissan Leaf over the last four months. According to Erik Gottfried, Nissan’s director of electric vehicle sales and marketing, the numbers are a bit too high. Or production is too low. Or something. Point is, demand is apparently outstripping supply.

Nissan says it’s “going to be short on inventory all through the summer.”

Despite having a stated annual capacity of 150,000 Leaf EVs at its Smyrna, TN plant – over 10,000 a month – Leaf production in the Volunteer State has not yet ramped up to a level that can satisfy demand for 2,200 Leafs a month. According to Automotive News, Gottfried recently told dealers in Texas that, “we’re doing everything we can to get them more inventory. But it’s taking some time. … We’re going to be short on inventory all through the summer. It will be late fall before we can produce enough to satisfy everybody.”

Everybody in this case means the expanding markets outside the West Coast, where all the cool EVs have long been allowed to play. AN says that the third-largest market for the Leaf is now Atlanta, where there is only a nine-day supply of the EV. The world’s most popular highway-speed EV (over 60,000 have been sold worldwide, and around 30,000 in the US) got a big price drop earlier this year when the company started making the car in the US. Previously, all Leafs were exported from Japan.

Report: Worker killed at Nissan Tennessee plant

By Jeffrey N. Ross

Filed under:

A worker has died at the Nissan assembly plant in Smyrna, TN following an accident. According to The Detroit News, the tragedy happened Thursday and involved a large electric panel that fell while it was being moved. The victim was not a Nissan employee, he was a worker for Michigan-based supplier Complete Automation.

Nissan has not released the name of the deceased, but has vowed to cooperate with the authorities investigating the accident. The Murfreesboro Post notes that this is the second death at the plant in recent years – in 2012, a transport truck driver was killed after his rig rolled forward, crushing him between his cab and trailer.

Report: Volkswagen lays off 500 Chattanooga workers

By Jeffrey N. Ross

The redesigned Volkswagen Passat has been a decent seller since its debut in 2011, but sales have apparently dropped off enough that the automaker is trimming some of the employees from its Chattanooga, TN assembly plant. According to Automotive News, Volkswagen will be cutting shifts and laying off 500 contracted workers in response to slowing sales.

Currently, the plant has three teams running 10-hour shifts Monday through Saturday, but starting May 13, this will be reduced down to two teams running 10-hour shifts Monday through Thursday. This will be done to reduce dealer inventory (the article says that VW dealers, on average, have a 97-day supply of Passats) and production capacity (currently running at an annual pace of 170,000 units, which is more than the 150,000 annual units the plant was planned to produce).

This, of course, isn’t saying that the Passat has been a failure since VW added 200 full-time employees to the plant in February 2012 to keep up with increased demand. The AN article says that automakers frequently overstaff plants during the launch of a new product – or in this case, a new product and a new plant – but eventually reduce the workers as things run smoother and more efficiently.

Report: VW's Browning says TN workers to decide whether they want union

By Zach Bowman

Filed under:

Jonathan Browning, Volkswagen North America CEO, has said that workers at the company’s Chattanooga, Tennessee manufacturing facility will decide if they want union representation. Browning made the comment while speaking to reporters at the New York Auto Show, according to Reuters. Browning also made it clear that the United Auto Workers isn’t the only option open to employees at the plant.

“If employees vote in favor of formal representation, then it’s important to understand that there are a number of alternatives that may or may not include the UAW,” Browning said.

Technically, the company hasn’t scheduled a vote on unionization at the Chattanooga factory, but Browning says the company is in the early stages of discussions on the matter. The automaker’s board has not discussed the topic in an official capacity.

If the workforce does decide to join the UAW, it would be the first foreign-owned plant to do so. The union has been courting plants owned by foreign automakers for years, but has never managed to sway workers.

VA Provides Substandard Care For Veterans

By Russel Langley

Soldier US Flag SC VA provides substandard care for veterans

The veteran sits in his home on hold yet again with the veteran’s administration healthcare facility that is two hours from his home.  It is not his closest facility, but it is the only one he can get an appointment at, and now that appointment needs to be changed.  He has been on hold for over an hour when he screams in frustration that he was now disconnected and will have to begin his wait anew.

That veteran is yours truly, and I was trying to make intake appointments for my wife and me at the Mountain Home VA Hospital in Johnson City, TN.  We are both disabled veterans and have been part of the VA healthcare system for years; but since we moved from California to Tennessee, we had to start all over and reapply for our benefits.  They could not simply transfer us in the computer; and to make matters worse, we were told we cannot have appointments at the local clinic and will have to drive over two hours to see a doctor.

Our story of frustration is felt time and again on a daily basis across the country by disabled veterans who are treated poorly by the very system built to help them.  Operators and phone personnel are rude, offices do not talk with one another, or computer systems are incompatible and make communications difficult or impossible.  Veterans who have been in the VA system for years are subjected to re-testing just to maintain the medication that has helped them in the past.  Veterans entering the system are subject to the same re-testing despite providing complete medical records to the VA time and again.

In a tearful plea for help, Vietnam veteran Carl Harmon of Linn Valley, KS writes, “So here I sit in the middle of the night after two months without pain meds.”

Harmon tells a tale of his wife losing her job due to layoffs and this forcing him to turn to the VA for his long term care for several chronic conditions.  According to the letter written by Harmon, he provided VA care providers with several copies of his medical records.  Despite this, the VA insisted he take tests he has already had that were documented in his medical records; until the tests can be scheduled, administered, and scored, Harmon will have to survive without his pain and anti-depression medication.

Unlike a private practice doctor who is held accountable by the courts for malpractice, it appears no such accountability exists for the VA.  Attempts to hold the VA accountable by several patients have ended only in frustration, according to various websites dealing with VA complaints.

Several attempts to contact the VA regarding this issue of lower-than-standard care for America’s veterans went unanswered at the time of publication.

When I ordered the Chromebook Pixel, I was confident I would not like it. $1299 for a laptop that is only a browser? The Competition

The first though most people have with the Pixel is, why not a Macbook Retina 13 refurb, or the http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009LL9VDG/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B009LL9VDG&linkCode=as2&tag=mindwarpnet-20.

Ram 4GB 8GB 2GB
Battery Life 5 hours 7 hours 6.3 hours
Price $1299 $1499 $250

What Sets the Pixel Apart?

What the table above doesn’t account for are the qualitative features which make all of the difference. The build quality is fantastic, and the Pixel feels very tough. The Aluminum used in the Pixel feels stronger and more durable than the Macbook, and feels like it is less prone to denting. The screen is extremely bright, and even when plugged in I only use it at 70% brightness, and when on the go I turn it down to nearly minimum. Even with the brightness set so low, it is easier on the eyes and more readable than the TN panels common in most laptops.

Chrome OS itself really gets out of your way. Out of the box I only installed the secure shell app, and I was able to do 50% of the Linux development I wanted to. No tweaking, driver downloading etc, out of the box I had a very fast browser, multi-monitor support, retina level text, music and cloud file storage.

The next question to answer was how do I do heavier development? Chrome actually has a great remote desktop feature built in, so I was able to connect to my much more powerful Ubuntu workstation, and run Eclipse there. It worked well over my local network, although there are even better solutions if you don’t enjoy the slight latency for screen refreshes and window dragging.

]

Enter Crouton

Crouton provides a way to install Ubuntu and run it without rebooting from Chrome OS. This means if I run Crouton and simply press CTRL-ALT-Refresh I am instantly in my XFCE full Ubuntu 12.04.2 environment, and I can run any X86 programs I desire. I was able to use SSH XForwarding to also connect to my desktop, and it was also fast and fluid. I was able to load vim, git, gcc etc, however I actually like just using regular Chrome OS and a SSH session where possible, so I can switch between locations with ease. https://github.com/dnschneid/crouton.

Battery Life

Most reviews highlight that battery life is less than four hours, but skip over how low you can set the brightness on this laptop. 60% brightness on the Pixel is brighter than a lot of laptops at 100%, and the screen is extremely clear and readible. I was able to get 6 hours of battery life without issue, …read more

Official: Volkswagen to build Golf in Mexico in 2014

By Jeffrey N. Ross

As a part of its plan to produce more than 75 percent of its North American-sold products in North America, Volkswagen will be building the 2014 Golf at its Puebla, Mexico assembly plant. We first reported on the possibility of this move back in October, but VW recently confirmed the news. Golf models built in Mexico would be sold in both North and South America.

Production of the new Golf in Puebla – alongside the Jetta and Beetle – will commence during the first quarter of 2014, and the car will go on sale in the US sometime during the second half of next year.

After the Golf, it is also likely that production of the Tiguan and an upcoming crossover (teased by the recent CrossBlue Concept at the Detroit Auto Show) would also take place somewhere in North America. While there is no indication where the Tiguan’s North American production would take place, the new three-row crossover could be produced at VW‘s Chattanooga, TN plant, which currently builds the Passat.

Scroll down for the official press release.

2013 Nissan Leaf

For the new model year, Nissan is applying lessons learned from two years of selling the Leaf electric vehicle – and seeing what the competition is doing – to offer a lower-price trim line as well as faster charging and new, upper-level options.

The 2013 Nissan Leaf line grows from two trim lines – the SV and SL – to include the new, lower-cost S grade. Precisely what that lower price is, has not yet been revealed, but we think that information might come out at the Detroit Auto Show next week. What we do know is that the reduced price is due, in part, to domestic production. Instead of shipping every Leaf from Japan, Nissan has started making the EV and its batteries in Smyrna, TN, as you can see in the video below.

To keep up with faster-charging competitors like the Ford Focus Electric, the Leaf is finally getting a 6.6-kW onboard charger. This has been expected for a long while, and it’s most welcome because it will cut the time it takes to charge the Leaf in half, down to four hours from empty to 80 percent full. This will be standard on the SL and SV trims. The Leaf S will use a 3.6-kW charger unless you spring for the 6.6-kW option. These updates and others mean expected increases to the vehicle’s range, but that number will have to wait until closer to when the 2013 Leaf goes on sale later this year.

Nissan also says the 2013 Leaf has better regenerative brakes and some refined touches like “leather-appointed seating” and new exterior colors. There is also a new “B” drive mode for harsher regen braking and an “available hybrid heater system” for better heat in cold weather. You can read more about it below.
