FRAMIING nail size for interior wall?

By CEE1NG_RED

Hello.

I was wondering what is the code for interior walls when using specific nails? Just bought me a Rigid 21* round framing gun, but I only need a handful of nails. Home Depot sells, 3.25″ nails 1000 set, but is 3.25″ okay? I live in Long Beach, CA. I will be building a pocket closet, and the wall will be perpendicular to one existing wall. The wall will be 7’L x 8′ H. Will I be penalized by the city or inspector for doing this?

Official: ACLU releases license plate scanning docs, says you are being tracked

License plate scanner on police car trunk

Filed under:

The proliferation of automated license plate readers in police departments around the country has increased dramatically over the years, leading the American Civil Liberties Union to commission a report to find out what they are being used for, the policies governing their use and how they should be used to benefit the American public. The report, which has just been released, is called You Are Being Tracked. The report’s findings, according to the ACLU, show that plate readers are not being used in a lawful manner that benefits US citizens.

Automated plate readers are placed on roads, highways, overpasses, police cars, etc., and snap photos of all vehicles and license plates that pass by them. Software reads the numbers, adds a time and location stamp to them and then stores them in a database – often for an indefinite amount of time, even if the drivers are innocent of any crime. The ACLU claims that storing plate data indefinitely, or for an unnecessarily long period of time, is an invasion of privacy because many facets of citizens’ personal lives can be found out if their location is being tracked at all times.

In a 2011 survey, the ACLU found that almost three-quarters of police departments in the US were using plate readers and 85 percent of them were planning to increase their use of the readers over the next five years.

One city that has no plate-read storage policy, Milpitas, CA, the ACLU points out, has a population of 67,000, yet it had 4.7 million stored plate reads as of August 2, 2012. Jersey City, NJ, has a policy to store read data for 5 years, but with a population of 250,000, it still has about 10 million plate reads stored. The Minnesota State Patrol is striking a better balance with the technology, the ACLU states, with a patrol area covering 5.3 million people but a plate-read storage policy of 48 hours. The MSP stores less than 20,000 reads because of its policy, which the ACLU says limits the chance that innocent drivers can be tracked over time. The Ohio State Patrol’s policy is even stricter than the MSP’s, the ACLU reports, as its policy states that all non-hit records can’t be stored and must be deleted immediately.

Fueling the debate, the ACLU report found that, “In Maryland, for every million plates read, only 47 (0.005 percent) were potentially associated with a stolen car or a person wanted for a serious crime.” What do you think about this technology? Check out the ACLU’s press release below, then have your say in Comments.

Report: Check out this million-mile Porsche 356

By Damon Lowney

Filed under:

One can learn a lot about a car over the course of driving it a million miles. Unfortunately, most people will trade their car in for something newer the minute the mechanic says “needs an engine rebuild” or “there’s major rust damage.” But it wasn’t so for Guy Newmark of San Pedro, CA, Petrolicious reports, whose 1964 Porsche 356C has been daily driven for over 40 years, accruing 980,000 miles along the way. Of course it needed an engine rebuild – three, in fact – but it’s nigh unbelievable that the original transmission lasted 900,000 miles before it needed to be gone through.

His father bought the Porsche new, and many people consider the 1964-65 356C to be the best-driving 356 of them all because it is the only model that came with disc brakes all around. It also benefitted from the 14 years of research, development and updates that Porsche had performed since the first split-window Gmünd 356 rolled off the assembly line in 1950. The air-cooled flat four’s 75 horsepower isn’t much by today’s standards, but, in the classic Porsche, it’s enough power to scoot around with enthusiasm. Remember, in its day, the 356 was a giant killer known more for the speed it could carry through turns than outright acceleration.

Today, the 356 is a valuable classic, but we’re pretty sure Newmark is glad he has been able to enjoy driving his car 980,000 miles, which is something most people will never do. Head on over to Petrolicious for more info about the inspiring man and his long-lasting machine.

The Making Of A Solar REIT: By The Numbers

By Tom Konrad, Contributor

Power REIT (NYSE:PW Disclosure: I own PW stock) announced yesterday that it had closed on a deal to buy approximately 100 acres of land leased to the owners of over 20 MW of solar projects near Fresno, CA.  This will be the company’s second solar transaction and increases the share of its revenue from solar to 21%.  These two solar transactions put PW well on its way to becoming the nation’s first REIT to get most of its revenue from renewable energy.  The balance of its revenue comes from leasing its railroad property.  Whiile not renewable energy, rail is also a green asset in that transport by rail is much more fuel efficient than the alternative: trucking. …read more

The launch of the 2014 Toyota Highlander is being assisted by Bikini Bottom’s number one resident, SpongeBob SquarePants. The new crossover has been wrapped with SpongeBob’s square mug all over it as if he’s saying “I’m ready. I’m ready. I’m ready. I’m ready,” from every direction. Inside is a cabin that Toyota says “captures all of the beloved character’s high-octane energy,” but might make you question whether this is really the world you want to live in.

How to seek help to replace air conditioning indoor blower motor?

By jgy2001

I have a Trane XE 1200 central air conditioner with gas furnace. I am in San Jose, CA area.
The indoor blower motor is getting quite noisy lately. Originally, this blower motor was supposed to have two speed, and run normally in slow speed. But the installer made it only run on high speed most of time, except when the air conditioning is turning off, and slow speed kick in for the last 20 seconds. Now the blower is rattling noisily. What should I do to find out more so that I can seek contractor to replace with another quieter motor?

Sacked Arthur taking legal action over CA axing

Sacked coach Mickey Arthur has hired a legal firm and is seeking compensation after Cricket Australia tore up his contract last month, a report said Saturday.

The South African, the first foreign-born coach of the Australian team, was sacked just 16 days before the start of the Ashes series in England.

Cricket Australia high-performance manager Pat Howard and chief executive James Sutherland called Arthur into a meeting ahead of the Ashes and told him he was to be replaced immediately by Darren Lehmann.

Citing sources, The Weekend Australian newspaper said Cricket Australia had offered Arthur a cash settlement, hoping to head off a court battle.

Arthur had been contracted to the end of the 2015 World Cup and entitled to three months’ notice, the newspaper said.

The Weekend Australian said there were legal concerns about the way Arthur’s sacking was handled.

Arthur went quietly at the time, admitting he had been “shocked and shattered” and had had no idea he was about to lose his job when summoned to the meeting, it said.

He refused to blame the players and acted with good grace at a hastily-convened press conference to announce his departure.

“Nobody likes losing their job,” he said at the time of his sacking. “All I can say is I have given this job 100 percent commitment.

“If it wasn’t good enough, so be it. I leave with a lot of professional pride and a lot of professional dignity. That is how I always like to be remembered.”

Arthur flew back to Australia immediately after the decision to consider his future, learning in transit that his mother had died.

The Australian said Arthur had appointed high-profile legal team Harmers Workplace Lawyers to seek damages.

Cricket Australia refused to comment on the report.

Teased: Toyota teases 2014 4Runner, will debut on April 27

By Jeffrey N. Ross

Filed under:

The 2014 Toyota 4Runner appears to be getting a styling refresh that is as out of the ordinary for Toyota as the venue at which it will be debuting. Launching on April 27 at the 2013 Stagecoach Music Festival in Indio, CA, the 2014 4Runner looks to be getting more of an in-your-face design. Toyota says this marks the first time it has ever revealed a new product at a music festival.

While we only see two images of the updated 2014 4Runner, the new headlights break from the rectangular shape present on the current model for an edgy, scalloped shape. Below the headlights are vertical air inlets – looking quite similar to the 2014 Subaru Forester XT – but it isn’t clear if all models will get these or just special trim levels. The other image Toyota released was of the smoked, LED taillight.

As the presenting sponsor of the music festival, Toyota will have legendary off-road driver Ivan “Ironman” Stewart at the show as well as an off-road driving course for people to drive the automaker’s trucks and SUVs. Scroll down for a press release giving some additional information about both the 2014 4Runner and the Stagecoach Music Festival.

Report: Man blames zombies for causing him to crash stolen big rig

By Zach Bowman

Filed under: Here’s a pro tip: if you happen to have stolen a semi truck and proceeded to crash it into a number of cars on an interstate, do yourself a favor and don’t blame the escapade on zombies. That’s exactly what 19-year-old Jerimiah Hartline did after he bounced his pilfered a big rig off of a number of vehicles in Temecula, CA. Hartline told the police he was attempting to flee from zombies when the accident happened, but that didn’t stop law enforcement from charging him with a rash of offenses, including auto theft, attempted auto theft, reckless driving, hit-and-run resulting in injury and driving without a license among others.

California Highway Patrol said truck driver Daniel Martinez picked Hartline up in Tennessee as he was headed to San Diego. But when Martinez stopped to make adjustments to his truck just off of I-15, Hartline jumped behind the wheel and took off after having visions of zombies “coming after him.”

There is some suspicion Hartline was under the influence of a controlled substance.

The young man then proceeded to swerve the truck from side to side in an attempt to elude his imagined pursuers. After around two miles, Hartline struck and overturned a Toyota Tacoma, which then bounced into a Toyota 4Runner and a Mercedes-Benz. Hartline then struck a Ford Taurus and a Honda Accord before jackknifing and blocking all four lanes of traffic. Hartline has since pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Study: All you ever wanted to know about '57 Chevy thefts

By Zach Bowman

1957 Chevrolet

Filed under:

The National Insurance Crime Bureau has taken a closer look at just how often 1957 Chevrolet vehicles have been stolen since the car first rolled off the assembly line some 56 years ago. As you may recollect, someone pilfered TV personality Phil McGraw’s example from a repair shop in Burbank, CA. As one of 42 ’57 Chevy thefts in 2012, the $100,000 two-door wasn’t alone. All told, California accounts for the bulk of the classic model’s thefts at 6,700 between 1958 and last year, followed by Texas at 2,171 and New York at 1,286.

The car was particularly popular in 1972, when 3,071 examples were stolen from their owners nationwide. Thieves targeted the cars heavily for a five-year run between 1969 and 1974. There is some good news for McGraw, however. Police busted an auto theft ring in the LA area in December, and his ’57 was among those found at the location. Check out the full press release below for more information.

Swamp/Evaporative cooling ventilation method through the house…

By PearlWhtZ32

Hello all, I just joined the forum after reading what all goes on here and I must say it would be great to be a part of this community. Background of my house: built in 1975 before attic ventilation was studied, central heat only, no air, single story, 1200 sq ft, Sacramento, CA area. Just installed a ridge vent, Shingle Vent II, adding soffit vents to match NFA of the vent on my days off. Central air would instantly make me feel like the money in my wallet is catching on fire, both because of startup costs and utility bills. Instead of just throwing a 3 ton unit outside my house, I am considering installing an evaporative cooler outside the house at ceiling level (8′) and ducting through a gable vent I just blocked off. In the process of installing radiant barrier as well. Planning on sending the air from the swamp cooler through the gable vent, and directing it towards a ceiling vent that would be installed somewhere near the middle of the house. My questions are:

What is code when it comes to vents in the ceiling that need to exhaust to the attic or outside (possibly soffit vents)? I want to avoid having to open the windows when the unit turns on to evacuate the hot dry air.

Where do I find these vents? I picture a tube with a flapper on top so that it only opens when there is positive pressure in the house, and is opened by air movement.

Took a lot of calculus based physics recently and love working on cars, so I’m no stranger to understanding concepts. I wanted to put some kind of vent in the celing in each room at strategic locations to exhaust the air from the swamp cooler automatically. I would make sure that they are at their farthest point from the intake in each room that applies and that the total cross sectional area of each vent equals the cross sectional area of the intake as well to achieve a balanced system. Any help is much appreciated!

An Oil Company Spends Big To Teach Students To Use Less

The Shell Eco-marathon Americas 2013 is over, the winners declared. Thousands of excited students came to Houston last weekend with 140 cars and the winning team managed to get upwards of 3,580 miles per gallon. Now that the cars have been packed up and shipped back to schools throughout the hemisphere, from Alaska to Brazil, we can look back and discuss some of the bigger issues that the three frenzied, fuel-efficient competition days – and the months of hard work leading up to the event – raise.

Before leaving Houston, we got to sit down with representatives from Shell, which spends an undisclosed amount of money to put on these Eco-marathons around the world. It’s a huge undertaking, and one that has lots of positive angles and some particularly thorny ones. But first, a short history.

The story goes that the first Eco-marathon started as a bet between two Shell engineers. The year was 1939 and the winner managed to hit 49.39 mpg.

The story goes that the first Eco-marathon was started as a bet between two Shell engineers to see who could go further on a gallon of fuel. The year was 1939 and the winner managed to hit 49.39 miles per gallon in a 1933 Plymouth. They had so much fun they did it again and, by 1949, the winner was getting 150.53 mpg. The numbers kept going up from there. 1968: 244.62 mpg. 1973: 392.02 mpg. And so on. The event was known as the Shell Mileage Marathon, but in 1985, a name change signified the start of the event in its current form. That year, students from 20 European countries in 25 teams competed in the first Eco-marathon in France, and the winners managed to get 1599.45 mpg. The 1997 event was canceled because of heavy rain and in 2006 the first solar cars ran the race. In 2007, the event was held in the US for the first time, in Fontana, CA, and Asia joined the party in 2010. Today, across the three events, over 400 teams participate each year. Next year, a fourth location will draw teams from the Middle East and Africa. The current record is 8,914 mpg, set by a French team in 2003.

Turner Broadcasting, Funny Or Die, HTC and NCM Media Networks Team Up for New Comedy Content to Run On-Air, Online and in Theaters

James Van Der Beek to Lend Comedic Talent for Funny Or Die Branded Entertainment Introducing the new HTC One

NEW YORK–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Turner Broadcasting and Funny Or Die, together with HTC, have developed a short-form comedy sketch featuring James Van Der Beek (Don’t Trust the B in Apartment 23, Varsity Blues) designed to promote HTC‘s new smartphone, the HTC One. Debuting on Funny Or Die Friday, April 12, the content will extend through a multi-platform promotion across the Turner portfolio of comedy television networks and digital screens, leveraging the power of brands like TBS and Adult Swim, along with TeamCoco.com. Additionally, the comedy piece integrating the new HTC One marks Funny Or Die’s debut in top movie theaters nationwide through NCM Media Networks.

Filmed on-location in Malibu, CA, Van Der Beek stars in a dating show parody featuring the HTC One and competing bachelor contestants – Smart Phone, Flip Phone, Rotary Phone and ’90s Phone – all vying for the heart (and ear) of a beautiful bachelorette. Van Der Beek plays the role of the show’s suave host, who occasionally forgets that he’s not part of the consideration set. The content will debut on Funny Or Die Friday, April 12, with promotion across TBS and TBS.com, Adult Swim and AdultSwim.com, truTV and truTV.com, as well as TeamCoco.com beginning the week of April 15. Theatre audiences will also be entertained by the Funny Or Die content on 8,000 movie screens exclusively in NCM’s FirstLook pre-show program in hundreds of theatres nationwide from April 26-May 23.

“Funny Or Die is an expert in this space – creating content that makes people laugh, that people want to share within their social circles, and that brands trust to help make deeper connections with consumers,” said Ed Wise, senior vice president, Turner Branded Entertainment. “Amplifying creative like this across the range of the Turner portfolio gives HTC the reach and the audiences they are looking for as they launch the HTC One.”

“A multi-screen approach has been at the core of our global media strategy for the HTC One and this is the perfect integration to deliver this strategy in a unique and relevant way – through the creation of original entertainment content. We are excited about this

CA Technologies sues AppDynamics for patent pilfering

CA Technologies is suing a rival in the Application Performance Management (APM) market, accusing AppDynamics of using three of CA‘s patented technologies. The founder and CEO of AppDynamics helped lead software development at an APM company later acquired by CA.

Use of the technologies is “willful and deliberate patent infringement,” charged Richard Donoghue, chief counsel for litigation for CA, in a statement. “We will take all steps necessary to ensure that our intellectual property is protected.”

The patent infringement lawsuit, filed in the U.S. in the Eastern District Court of New York, seeks undisclosed damages for lost profits and legal costs, as well as an injunction against further use of the CA‘s patented intellectual property (IP).

CA obtained the three patents from Wily Technology, which CA purchased in 2006 for US$375 million. AppDynamics’ founder, Jyoti Bansal, worked at Wily and, after the acquisition, CA itself. According to the CA complaint, Bansal, then a senior software engineer at Wily, was the original assignee of one patent, and he influenced the design decisions for the other two.
