ETC: Bugatti 'Blue Dream' plane being replicated with Kickstarter help [w/video]

By Michael Harley

Filed under:

Ettore Bugatti, the automobile designer behind the Automobiles E. Bugatti nameplate, was famed for his engine and vehicle designs. Yet few realize that the Frenchman also worked on a spectacular twin-engine racing aircraft, intended to compete in the 1939 Deutsch de la Meurthe Cup Race, called the 100P. Designed by Louis de Monge, the low wing monoplane featured two engines, both mounted aft of the pilot (nearly end-to-end), driving twin counter rotating propellers through long drive shafts. To achieve its maximum speed, estimated at nearly 550 miles per hour, it was fitted with two powerful inline eight-cylinder engines each making about 450 horsepower.

Sadly, the plane never took flight. Instead, the one-of-a-kind aircraft spent World War II slowly rotting in a French barn, hidden from the Germans. Restored today, but not in flying condition, Bugatti’s original 100P sits in the Airventure Museum in Oshkosh, WI.

Seven decades after the original mostly balsa and hardwood aircraft was locked away, businessman Scotty Wilson is leading a team (including Louis de Monge’s great-nephew, Lasislas de Monge) intent on seeing an exact replica of Bugatti’s 100P “Blue Dream” take to the sky. And that is where Kickstarter comes into play…

After three years of self-funded work, the team is 90 percent done. However, big obstacles remain in its path (e.g., testing, certification and a transportation dolly). The Bugatti100p team is hoping to raise $50,000 to push the program forward. If successful, Bugatti’s dream could take flight as soon as September. Here’s a direct link to the Reve Bleu Kickstarter page, worthy of a visit even if only to check out the interesting pictures. There’s also a project video to enjoy, below.

Palmen Motors new car sale scam - video report screencap of new GMC Terrain

You know, people, getting through this life from one end to the other in one piece really does require just one rule: don’t be a prick. If you ever find yourself in a situation of dubious moral standing, take a step back and ask yourself, “Am I being a prick to any person or thing?” If the answer is “yes,” then stop what you’re doing, apologize and go home. One dealership in Wisconsin could possibly have benefitted from that course of action when it reportedly helped David McMurray con his elderly and disabled parents into buying a brand-new $42,000 GMC Terrain for his use.

According to local news reports, a representative from Palmen Motors visited Harold and Christen Thomsen’s home to collect signatures for a loan agreement three weeks before the 89-year-old, legally blind Harold passed away. The World War II veteran was on morphine and in hospice when he signed for the GMC, and his 90-year-old wife suffers from dementia. Even so, upon being discovered, the dealer initially said everything was done “legally.” According to Barb Tinkler, McMurray’s sister, the sale was a scam that remained hidden until he was busted for an unrelated criminal charge.

An attorney for Palmen Motors has now said they regret the way the transaction went down and the dealership will buy the car back and pay off the loan. State police have opened their own investigation after the local news station brought the issue to light. You can watch the video report below.

The Tale of Two Digital Generations: Young Chinese and Americans

By Don Schultz, Contributor Marketers have difficulty understanding today’s digital generation, i.e., those young people 18-34 years of age who grew up with interactivity, the internet, mobile and the like.  And, when one compares the Chinese digital generation with a similar group in the U.S., the results are even more confusing due to the cultural differences. We have examined the China market for many years and most recently we targeted our research toward the young digitals. Not surprisingly, the differences between them and their American counterparts are vast and present both challenges and opportunities for global marketers. (In fact, the findings were so intriguing and vital to success in China that we decided to write a book.) What follows below are some of the key findings. The Chinese rely heavily on the Internet to stay in touch with friends, families and associates.  So, do Americans, but, the tools are quite different.  The Chinese rely on instant messaging via QQ and Weibo.  Americans favor email. There is no dominant major social network in China similar to Facebook in the U.S. Instead the Chinese rely on special interest networks such as Sina Weibo, Youku/Tudou and Renren, all of having their own specific purpose. Chinese consumers actively search products and services on line before buying, even if they end up buying in a retail store.  Americans do the same but, focus primarily on price comparisons. Online shopping is booming in China, but only recently.  Lack of trust, payment facilities and logistics, all of which are prevalent in the U.S., are just now being overcome.  Chinese chat and blog.  Americans watch TV and play video games. Digital generation Chinese spend their leisure time alone, more so than Americans. They are on the internet, reading or listening to music. Young Chinese women are much heavier users of digital media than their male counterparts, focusing heavily on shopping activities. There are major differences in how and in what way the digital tools are used in Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3 Chinese cities.  Much like the differences in U.S. digitals between New York and Los Angeles and those in Racine, WI and Big Spring, TX. In summary, while the digitals around the world may have the same demographics, they are radically different based on their cultures, activities and interests.  Marketers should, therefore, proceed with caution.
