Microsoft Lost $900 Million on Surface RT in Q1

Today, as part of its Q4 earnings report, Microsoft announced that it has incurred a $900 million loss due to its struggling Surface RT tablet. While the company otherwise reported $4.97 billion in earnings from $19.9 billion in revenue, the Surface RT cost the company a significant sum as a result of “inventory adjustments.”

The news comes on the heels of Microsoft’s $150 price drop on the Surface RT, now carrying a $349 MSRP for the 32GB model and $449 for the 64GB version. While Microsoft has not released specific sales statistics, IDC figures for Q1 placed Surface sales at under a million, with the Surface Pro accounting for a majority of total units sold.

Report: Maserati Ghibli pricing announced for UK

By Damon Lowney

Filed under:

Maserati’s newest car, Ghibli, is a stunningly well-proportioned luxury sedan mixing the styling of the larger Quattroporte sedan and the GranTurismo coupe. We found it plenty good to in our First Drive review, and now we know how much it will cost (in the UK, at least).

Ghibli pricing announced at the Goodwood Festival of Speed is for customers in the UK, but based on current exchange rates and prices of other Maseratis sold here in the US, we can estimate its MSRP for our market. The base Ghibli, with a twin-turbocharged V6 making 325 horsepower, will cost 52,275 pounds for the Bits, making $75,000 a good guess for American buyers. If that number holds true, however, the Ghibli would be in a price category above its main competition from Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Take a step up to the Ghibli S, sporting a naturally aspirated V8 producing 404 hp, and you’ll have to fork out 63,415 pounds or an estimated $91,000 here.

Just for kicks, the Europe-only Ghibli Diesel, which makes 270 hp and 420 pound-feet of torque with its diesel V6, is the least-expensive Maserati 48,830 pounds. Running an estimated $70k for us, we’d really like to have that one, too. After all, the sparkplug-less engine is the same one found in the Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel.

Report: Land Rover planning entry-level 'baby' SUV?

By Zach Bowman

Filed under:

Autocar reports Land Rover may be mulling a new, inexpensive SUV to slot below the company’s current offerings. John Edwards, global brand director for Land Rover, has confirmed his company’s product planners are currently evaluating the viability of a baby SUV. Edwards says he scan see such a model performing well in several markets, but has yet to see a convincing business case for bringing the machine to life right now. Other premium manufacturers are seriously pushing into the small CUV market with vehicles like the upcoming Porsche Macan, BMW X1 and even the Mini Countryman.

If the small Land Rover were to come to fruition, we could expect the car to carry an MSRP of around 18,000 pounds in the UK, or around $27,500 in the US at current conversion rates. Autocar reports the machine would likely borrow design cues from the beefy-looking Land Rover DC100 Concept as well as the upcoming Defender replacement.

Official: 2014 Jaguar XJR unleashed just ahead of New York show [w/video]

2014 Jaguar XJR - front three-quarter view, silver

Filed under:

Just a week after teasing us with the first image of the car, and mere hours before revealing it to the public at the New York Auto Show, Jaguar has pulled the wraps off of its 2014 XJR super sedan.

The British automaker has confirmed that the XJR will be kicking out a full 550-horsepower and 502 pound-feet of torque from its supercharged 5.0-liter V8, affording the sedan a 0-60 mile per hour sprint of 4.4 seconds and a top speed of 174 miles per hour. A ZF eight-speed automatic transmission will still allow for respectable fuel economy, as Jag estimates ratings of 15 miles per gallon city and 23 highway.

Newly tuned dampers and stiffer spring rates, along with an electronically controlled differential should ensure that the massive power of the engine isn’t wasted in transition to the road. Jaguar has also tweaked steering software and hydraulics, with the goal of increased road feel, response and overall feedback. 20-inch signature wheels carry wide Pirelli rubber (265-section up front, 295 in back) to keep the XJR planted.

Visually, the unique wheels, grille badges, sills and a discrete trunklid spoiler all call out the newest and most fearsome member of the XJ line. Inside, R badges on the seatbacks and elsewhere, as well as some unique seating, trim and stitching options, mark out the XJR. All in, the standard wheelbase XJR will carry an MSRP of $116,000, with $119,000 asked of the long-wheelbase model. Scroll down to see a video of the 2014 Jaguar XJR in action, as well as to find the full press release.

Kia Optima Hybrid gets same updates as Hyundai cousin, slightly higher price

By Sebastian Blanco

2013 kia optima hybrid

Filed under:

After a slight delay, we now bring you your regularly scheduled refresh of the 2013 Kia Optima Hybrid. As with the Hybrid Sonata Hybrid update, the reworked Optima gas-electric gets more power – a 40 pound-feet increase in torque, up to 235 lb-ft – from a bigger 47-horsepower electric traction motor and a more powerful 47-kW lithium-polymer battery. The price also gets bigger, but only a little bit. The new MSRP starts at $25,900, up $100 from the 2012 Optima Hybrid. That’s for the base LX model, the fully loaded EX trim starts at $31,950 (fees and delivery extra).

Given that this is a hybrid, fuel economy is key, and the 2013 model bumps those all-important EPA numbers up a smidge, too. The 2013 Optima Hybrid LX is expected to get 36/40/38 city/highway/combined miles per gallon. The 2013 EX does a little worse, at 35/39/37. For comparison’s sake, the 2012 model (there was only one trim level) is rated at 34/39/36, the same as the 2011, when Kia introduced the Optima Hybrid. These numbers are the updated, lower figures after Kia admitted earlier estimates were too high, so the new version is better in almost every category. Add in more trunk space and a new-for-2013 navigation system with rearview camera in the EX model, and you’ve got yourself a bunch of small but welcome updates.

Chevy's own contest points to C7 Corvette Stingray pricing

By Jeffrey N. Ross

Filed under:

As much attention as the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray has attracted since its debut back in January, we still have no idea how much the car will cost. Thanks to Chevy’s Race To Win Corvette contest, we finally have a pricing estimate of sorts for the hot new coupe.

In addition to winning a trip for two to France and tickets to the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the grand prize winner will also become the proud owner of a C7 Corvette, which has an “approximate retail value” of $71,860. While this would be quite a step up from the $49,600 base MSRP of the 2013 ‘Vette, keep in mind that this may also include options and taxes associated with the car – depending on where the car is sold, taxes alone could easily be in the $5,000 range. Or, it may just be some sort of estimate.

Regardless of how much the car costs, this sounds like an awesome contest. To enter, just head over to the Race to Win Corvette website.

Official: 2014 Kia Forte sedan priced from $15,900*

By Jeffrey N. Ross

Filed under:

During our recent First Drive of the 2014 Kia Forte sedan, Kia revealed many of the sedan’s specs, but left out pricing and fuel economy for its all-new compact sedan. With the new Forte set to hit dealerships soon, Kia has announced the starting prices for the sedan’s two initial trim levels and released the fuel economy for the EX trim level equipped with the bigger engine. Marking a slight $500 jump in price over the current 2013 model, the 2014 Forte sedan will have a starting MSRP of $15,900 (*not including a destination charge of $800).

This price is for the base LX sedan with the 148-horsepower, 1.8-liter inline-four paired to the manual gearbox, but buyers wanting an automatic transmission will have to pony up an extra $1,500. Some of the notable features standard on the LX include Bluetooth and heated, power-folding door mirrors.

Stepping up to the EX trim level will run $19,400, but it also brings the peppier 2.0-liter direct-injected four-cylinder producing 173 horsepower and returning 24 miles per gallon in the city, 36 mpg highway and a combined rating of 28 mpg; Kia says these are EPA estimates, but the EPA‘s website does not yet list the 2014 Forte. Kia is still holding out on fuel economy for the base engine.

These are the only two trim levels mentioned for the new Forte – there is no word as to whether or not Kia is planning a sportier SX trim level – but you can check out some of the options and features that will be offered on the 2014 Forte in the press release posted below.

SXSW: Analyst Says PS4 and Next Xbox Games Will Cost $70

PS4 and next Xbox games will retail at $70, ten dollars more than current gen games, said Wedbush Securities Research Analyst Michael Pachter during a panel at SXSW.

The news was tweeted this afternoon by Spike and GamesTrailers Host Geoff Keighley.

— Geoff Keighley (@geoffkeighley) March 9, 2013

This comes after Sony clarified the price point of PS4 games when SCEA President and CEO Jack Tretton explained that Sony, “will offer games with prices ranging from $0.99 to the more traditional $60 range with the ability for players to sample games before they buy.” It’s important to note that Tretton’s quote never gives a hard number, like a MSRP of $59.99, etc., which leaves room for interpretation of what Sony’s view of a “traditional $60 range” might actually be.

Study: Households with median incomes can only afford average new car price in one of America's 25 largest cities

By Zach Bowman

Filed under:

Interest.com has taken a look at the 25 largest metropolitan areas in the US to determine which median-income households in those areas can afford to purchase a new car. As it turns out, only those living in Washington, D.C. can realistically swing the payment on an average-priced model. In 2012, new cars and light trucks carried a median MSRP of $30,550, and Interest.com used the 20/4/10 rule to examine what exactly is affordable in each area.

The rule states that a buyer should be able to offer a down payment of at least 20 percent, incur financing for no more than four years and endure a principal, interest and insurance totaling up to no more than 10 percent of household income. That works out to a monthly payment of $601. Households with an average income in Washington, D.C. can afford a payment of up to $628, while the next closest city, San Francisco, can only afford $537 per month. You can pick through the cryptic press release below for more information.

Official: 2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid gets bigger, better battery pack, lower MSRP

By Zach Bowman

2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid - front three-quarter view

Just yesterday, we told you how Hyundai’s 2013 Sonata Hybrid was late out of the gate (along with its mechanical twin, the Kia Optima Hybrid), with growing speculation suggesting that the company was revisiting its gas-electric sedan with an eye toward improving its efficiency.

Well, today Hyundai has released official details, and that’s exactly what’s happened. Sporting a larger starter generator, a higher output electric motor and a more potent 47 kW lithium polymer battery, the 2013 Sonata hybrid is more efficient than before. The revised hardware helps the sedan jump two miles per gallon combined over its 2012 predecessor. That pushes the 2013 Sonata Hybrid to 36 mpg city, 40 mpg highway and 38 mpg combined. Engineers also tweaked the machine’s software, with revised driving pattern detection and engine on/off logic.

Surprisingly enough, the new battery pack actually weighs less than the kit in the old Sonata Hybrid, taking up less room in the trunk. Engineers shaved 4.6 pounds from the pack and the vehicle’s cargo area now boasts 12.1 cubic feet of space compared to the 10.7 cubes in the outgoing model. Hyundai has yet to release any images of the updated model (a 2011 example is pictured), so presumably the revisions are limited to what’s beneath the sheetmetal.

Even with all the changes, the Sonata Hybrid now carries a base MSRP of $25,650. That’s $200 less than last year, and now buyers can option up to the Sonata Hybrid Limited at $30,550, plus destination. No word on any changes for the Sonata’s Kia counterpart, but we’ll keep you informed if anything comes to light. In the meantime, check out the full press release below for more information.

Rumormill: Ford talking unibody Ranger replacement

By Zach Bowman

Ranger Tail Gate

Filed under:

Now here’s some welcome news. Car and Driver reports Ford is seriously mulling a replacement for the recently deceased Ranger, but the successor to the compact pickup’s throne may not look anything like what we’ve seen from the nameplate in the past.

While speaking at the 2013 Chicago Auto Show, Doug Scott, marketing manager for Ford Trucks, said there’s still a market for a smaller pickup, but that buyers expect to see a larger differentiation between the smaller utility vehicles and their full size counterparts in price, capability and fuel economy.

According to Scott, that means a vehicle with a payload capacity of around 1,000 pounds paired with a towing capacity of 3,000 pounds and “a dramatic reduction in fuel consumption.” But the biggest piece of that recipe is the price tag, and Scott says to keep the MSRP far enough away from the already cheap F-150, the answer could come in the form of a unibody design. Scott says target customers in this market don’t care whether the truck has a traditional frame or not, so long as it’s tough enough to do the job and has the capability they need.

We should be clear here: Ford hasn’t approved such a vehicle for production, but the company is working on developing a business case for the model. Even so, it could be years before buyers see another small pickup on dealer lots.

Report: Chevrolet Malibu gets across-the-board price cuts, hopes to dig out of slump

By Jeffrey N. Ross

Filed under:

To say that things aren’t going well for the newly redesigned 2013 Chevrolet Malibu is a pretty sizable understatement. Reports have been swirling about the Malibu getting an emergency design refresh, less than a year after its introduction, as well as having its production at the Fairfax Assembly Plant halted twice already this year for excessive inventory. Now, Motor Trend is reporting that the midsize sedan will be receiving price drops across the board ranging from $300 on a number of models up to $770 on the 1LT trim; offsetting some of MSRP drop, though, the destination charge has increased from $760 to $810.

Without destination, the entry-level Malibu LS now starts at $21,995, which is still about $300 more than a Honda Accord and about $300 less than the segment’s top-selling Toyota Camry. This new pricing also drops the price of the Eco, 2LT and 3LT trims by $300. The LTZ trim has dropped by $415, meaning that the Malibu’s top dog now starts at just under $30,000, excluding destination.

Here are the new starting prices for all eight of the Malibu trim levels compared to the previous prices for the 2013 model year (including destination):

  • 1LS – $22,805 (previous price: $23,150)
  • 1LT – $23,995 (previous price: $24,765)
  • 2LT – $25,700 (previous price: $26,000)
  • 3LT – $27,410 (previous price: $27,710)
  • Eco 1SA – $25,795 (previous price: $26,095)
  • Eco 2SA – $27,405 (previous price: $27,705)
  • 1LTZ – $28,715 (previous price: $28,590)
  • 2LTZ – $30,510 (previous price: $30,925)

Chicago: 2014 Chevy Cruze Diesel arrives with 42 mpg for $25,695*

By Zach Bowman

Filed under:

The last time General Motors had a diesel passenger car in the US, it was the 1.8-liter 1986 Chevette. At the 2013 Chicago Auto Show today, GM is unveiling the much-anticipated 2014 Chevrolet Cruze Diesel. The compact bows with a 2.0-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine that boasts 148 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, with full twist coming on at just 2,000 rpm. What’s more, the common-rail, direct-injection diesel features an overboost function that allows the engine to deliver up to 280 lb-ft of torque for 10 seconds at a time. Even with 10 more horsepower and 110 more pound-feet of torque than the available turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder in the Cruze, the 2.0-liter diesel engine can return up to 42 mpg (highway) bolted to its six-speed automatic transmission.

If you’re counting, that figure meets the less powerful Cruze Eco with a six-speed manual transmission. More importantly, the auto transmission Cruze Diesel matches its main competition, the Volkswagen Jetta TDI, in highway fuel economy. The Cruze 2.0 TD (as it will be badged) can also handle up to 20 percent biodiesel (B20), whereas the Jetta is rated only for B5. General Motors has not released city fuel economy for its newest diesel, but we do know how much it will cost you to jump behind the driver’s seat.

GM will kindly ask for $25,695, plus an $810 destination fee. That marks a $2,115 premium over a loaded Cruze LTZ Auto and $2,640 more than the Jetta TDI, though the MSRP will net you a leather interior, 17-inch alloy wheels and an Aero Performance Package, as well as a two-year maintenance plan and five-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty. Compared to the gas-powered Cruze, you also lose a couple cubic feet of rear cargo space thanks to a 17-liter diesel emission fluid tank. That urea fluid, which helps put the clean in clean diesel, will need to be refilled at least every 10,000 miles.

The Cruze’s diesel engine will be built in Kaiserslautern, Germany and the car will be produced starting in April at GM‘s plant in Lordstown, OH. Sales should kick off in May or June and cars will first roll out in 13 select states where GM has had success selling diesel-powered Silverado trucks. If you’re thinking GM did something similar when the Volt was released, you’re right. GM is again targeting buyers who are familiar and interested in a new (well, new since 1986, anyway) technology. This time, though, instead of zero emissions and li-ion, the audience knows that there’s a significant difference between the label and real-world fuel efficiency of diesel vehicles, and so might be persuaded to do the math on higher diesel fuel costs and come to a favorable conclusion.

You can read the full press releases, both on the Cruze Diesel and its beating heart, below. Now we just have to wait for the wagon.

Report: Lamborghini Aventador Roadster is sold out

By Zach Bowman

Lamborghini Aventador Roadsters

Well, that happened quickly. The $441,600 Lamborghini Aventador Roadster is, according to reports, already sold out in every market around the world until at least the middle of 2014.

Boasting a 6.5-liter V12 that churns out a heady 690 horsepower, there’s little wondering why the cars are so popular. But with its finicky carbon fiber rooflet, $3,700 gas guzzler tax and and an MSRP that sits considerably higher than the hardtop version’s price tag, the Aventador Roadster requires a very specific type of buyer. Lamborghini isn’t saying how many of the new dropheads have been sold, but we’re told hand raisers won’t get their keys until mid-summer at the earliest.

If you need a refresher on what makes this particular Lamborghini worth nearly half a million dollars, you can check out the photos and videos from the machine’s unveiling in Miami here.

Official: 2013 Dodge Challenger R/T Redline revs into Chicago

By Jeffrey N. Ross

2013 Dodge Challenger R/T Redline

When Dodge released the Challenger Rallye Redline last year, it brought a new dimension of styling to the car’s classic muscle car lines, but it was only available in V6 form lacking the oomph to back up its sinister appearance. To remedy that situation, Dodge is unveiling the Challenger R/T Redline, powered by a Hemi V8 engine, at the Chicago Auto Show.

Other than the extra cylinders, most of the R/T’s Redline package carries over from the Rallye model including the custom-look 20-inch black chrome wheels with red paint accents, but the R/T version of the package gets more of a retro look to the side stripes with graphite graphics featuring Redline lettering. Cars equipped with the six-speed manual transmission will get a performance-tuned, low-restriction exhaust allowing the engine to produce 375 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque; cars with the five-speed auto are rated at 372 hp and 400 lb-ft, but they do offer a bright chrome Mopar t-handle shifter and steering wheel paddle shifters.

The R/T Redline Group is offered only on cars painted in Billet Silver, Granite Crystal, Bright White and Pitch Black, and it adds just $1,995 to the MSRP of the Challenger R/T (starting at $31,990) and the Challenger R/T Plus (starting at $33,990), which adds features like Nappa leather and Boston Acoustics speakers.

Scroll down for the Challenger R/T Redline press release.

Official: Porsche 918 Spyder officially priced from $845K, Weissach package $84K more

By John Neff

Porsche has released official pricing for its entire lineup of 2013 models, which just happens to include the upcoming 918 Spyder hybrid supercar. The 795-horsepower advanced-technology-lab-on-wheels is now officially confirmed to have a starting price of $845,000 in the US, which is the exact amount we were told earlier when we had the opportunity to ride shotgun in some 918 Spyder pre-production test vehicles.

What we didn’t know at the time was the cost of the Weissach trim package, which is a high-performance upgrade to the standard vehicle that includes the deletion of some interior amenities and addition of lighter-weight carbon fiber appointments, magnesium wheels, flame-resistant upholstery, racing belts and aerodynamic aids – it’s meant for track-going folk who intend to use their 918 Spyders as God, country and manufacturer intended.

All told, the Weissach package should drop the 918 Spyder’s curb weight by some 80 pounds, while also lightening your wallet of an additional $84,000 – the car’s MSRP with the Weissach package is $929,000. These prices don’t, however, include destination charges, which, for something like the very limited edition 918 Spyder (only 918 will be made), could very well cost considerably more than your average Porsche.

The official pricing list can be found below and also includes base MSRPs for new models like the 2014 Cayman ($52,600), Panamera S Hybrid ($96,150), Cayenne Diesel ($55,750) and Cayenne S Hybrid ($69,850).

2014 Subaru Forester on a dirt road

Subaru has officially announced that its all-new 2014 Forester will carry a base MSRP of $21,995 when it hits dealerships early this year, (*not including $895 in destination fees). This represents an increase of $700 over the outgoing 2013 model.

That new price will net buyers the base 2.5i model equipped with a six-speed manual transmission. Subaru will also sell the 2.5i engine in Premium, Limited and Touring trims, though the automaker has not released specific price points for those models. These models are powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 170 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque. Subaru says that with its standard all-wheel drive, the Forester 2.5i will be good for fuel economy numbers of 24/32 miles per gallon (city/highway) when equipped with the company’s continuously variable transmission. Manual models see those numbers drop to 22/29 mpg.

The more powerful Forester 2.0XT will only be offered in Premium and Touring trims, starting at $27,995 (not including destination). These models are powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four, sending 250 hp and 258 lb-ft to all four wheels. Fuel economy doesn’t suffer terribly with this more powerful engine, as only the CVT is offered. Subaru quotes figures of 23/28 mpg here.

Upmarket Forester models are available with the company’s new Eyesight driver assistance system and Starlink infotainment technology. Other new features available for the 2014 Forester include Hill Descent Control on CVT-equipped models, a rearview camera, power liftgate, navigation with smartphone integration and a 440-watt Harmon/Kardon premium audio system.
