CW on Amazon's Status & DC Plans

Earlier this morning The CW unveiled its plans to develop a Flash television series. In fact, CW president Mark Pedowitz was on-hand at today’s TCA (Television Critics Association) press tour where he confirmed that The Flash is actively being developed, saying that Dr. Barry Allen will be introduced as a recurring character in Arrow: Season 2 and that they’re “planning an origin story” for the character.

The network’s plans of course raised questions about rumors that Warner Bros. was planning to develop a Flash movie leading into the oft-discussed Justice League film which many speculate will follow the studio’s announced Superman/Batman movie.

Review: 'Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox' Highlights the DC Conundrum

Existing both as a breath of fresh air and a sad reminder of what apparently isn’t to come, Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox is one of the better DC Animated movies to come down the pike in quite a while. The film feels unique and vibrant if only for the fact that it’s the painfully rare DCAU title that doesn’t revolve around Batman, Superman, or a Batman/Superman-led Justice League.  The title says “Justice League” and the legendary heroes do make appearances in a manner of speaking, but this one is a Flash adventure through-and-through.  Aside from merely highlighting one of the many oft-ignored would-be heavy hitters of the DCU, the film is a mostly ripping action film that entertains from start to finish.  I just wish it was a sign of what’s to come rather than apparently a momentary fluke in the release calendar. …read more

When Batman Becomes Warner Bros.' DC Universe Crutch

Well, the big news out of the Warner Bros./DC Comics panel at the San Diego Comic Book Convention has come and gone, and it appears that I was half-right.  There will be a The Flash movie scheduled for summer 2016, followed by a Justice League movie in 2017.  And since no new Green Lantern film or Wonder Woman movie is being squeezed in over the next four years, it stands to reason that Warner Bros. may in fact be using a Justice League movie to introduce Wonder Woman into the big-screen mythos, along with (hopefully) bringing in Jon Stewart as Green Lantern.  But the big surprise news is also the most disconcerting. Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox Review

For those in the comics know, the Flashpoint comic event was more of a means to an end to launch the New 52 than a definitive alternate reality story, but Warner Bros. Animation has outdone its source material by making Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox a fully fleshed out and cohesive tale featuring the Flash. The sleek and hard-hitting anime-influenced style works perfectly for this much more mature and action-packed story. And when I say mature I mean it: this is the most bloody, violent, and downright hardcore DC Comics animated film to date.

Whether that violence is too much or not is your decision. One character gets an arrow through the head. Another, after his helmet gets broken open, gets a face full of bullets and all we see is the blood splatter out. Someone else gets decapitated and we see the severed head. These gratuitous deaths of countless soldiers, favorites making a cameo, and even main characters have that Die Hard sense of fun about it, but it takes a depressing turn at the end. The brutality reaches the tipping point where its not so enjoyable anymore, most notably when a child gets straight up killed and we see his body flop to the ground with unblinking eyes.

Official: Kia Sorento is the official ride of the Justice League

Toyota showed us a Spongebob Squarepants-themed Toyota Highlander last week. Kia has now revealed a Justice League themed Sorento. Can we just have normal, competent crossovers without all the animation frosting, please?

To be fair, this Sorento is for a good cause. It will be part of a charity auction on eBay, benefitting DC Entertainment’s We Can Be Heroes campaign, which raises money for the famine-ridden Horn of Africa, a region that’s facing its worst food crisis in six decades. DCE’s President, Diane Nelson, claims DC has managed to raise over $285,000 through crowd-funding campaigns and unique opportunities for its fans. The Justice League Sorento is just the latest such fund-raising opportunity, with the automaker having already commissioned a number of similar themed vehicles for individual members of the Justice League.

The seven-passenger Sorento was designed by Jim Lee and created by West Coast Customs. It sports graphics that, relative to the Spongebob Highlander, are downright subtle. Batman, Green Lantern and Wonder Woman are depicted on the driver’s side, while Superman, the Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg are on the passenger side. The Justice League logo is emblazoned on the Sorento’s hood.

Inside, the Kia’s leather seats have been customized to represent each member of the Justice League, with Superman naturally in the driver’s seat. Poor Green Lantern is stuck riding in the middle of the second row.

Starting today, DC will be auctioning of the Sorento, along with a bunch of other cool, unique artwork from DC artists on eBay. Bidding on the Sorento starts at $35,000. We Can Be Heroes will distribute the proceeds of the auction towards International Rescue Committee, Mercy Corp and Save the Children.

Cast Revealed for Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox

New details were announced this week for DC and Warner Bros. Animation’s latest feature Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox, based on the Flashpoint comic book miniseries created by Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert.

Here’s the official plot synopsis: “When time travel allows a past wrong to be righted for Flash and his family, the event’s temporal ripples prove disastrous, creating a fractured, alternate reality where the Justice League never formed, and even Superman is nowhere to be found. Amidst a new world being ravaged by a fierce war between Wonder Woman’s Amazons and Aquaman’s Atlanteans, Flash must team with a grittier, more violent Batman and government agent Cyborg to restore the continuity of Flash’s original timeline.”

Man of Steel Will “Set the Tone” of Future DC Movies

Chud reports that “a trusted industry source” says “the current rumor on the block is that Charlie Hunnam’s likeness is being used for conceptual art on a particular big WB project right now. The film? Justice League. It seems that in the current pieces being drawn up, Charlie is The Flash.”

Nolan & Bale Not Back for Justice League?

Last month, it was reported that Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale were possibly returning for Warner Bros.’ Justice League movie. However, it now sounds like they may not be back after all.

Scoop masters Latino Review were on the Schmoes Know Movies podcast to discuss the matter. They say the studio was revved up to welcome back its Dark Knight duo for their upcoming JLA pic, with Nolan producing and Bale potentially reprising his role as Batman. However, Warners is now reportedly having trouble getting Nolan onboard, as the director doesn’t want JLA messing with the continuity of his Batman films. There was even some hesitancy surrounding Man of Steel’s Superman appearing in the film (Nolan is a producer on that picture).

Reynolds Disinterested in Making JLA Movie

If and when the Justice League of America movie finally happens it will probably won’t see Ryan Reynolds reprising his role as Green Lantern’s Hal Jordan.

“If you’re going to do comic book movies in that vein, you really have to get them right,” Reynolds told Empire. “I believe that Joss Whedon is the guy that just nails it and Christopher Nolan obviously nails it. So if they were gonna do it like that, it would be an interesting thing to do.”

Batman/Superman Film Should Happen Before JLA

The Internet is constantly abuzz with superhero movie rumors these days, but one of the biggest at the moment is Latino Review is reporting that Christian Bale will reprise his role as Batman in the Justice League of America movie, despite his Bruce Wayne effectively hanging up the cape and cowl at the end of The Dark Knight Rises. The site also claims that Christopher Nolan will oversee development of JLA in a sort of godfather role.


It remains to be seen if these rumors will pan out. However, the rumor has us wondering all the more if it’s really such a good idea for Warner Bros. to be jumping from this summer’s Superan reboot, Man of Steel, straight into a JLA ensemble movie. We’re of the opinion that it might be better to to build slowly towards JLA and first offer fans a movie that almost came to pass a decade ago – a Superman/Batman movie. As DC’s two biggest heroes, they’ve enjoyed a long history together in the company’s various World’s Finest comics and similar projects. In this feature, we explore why it might be better to go the World’s Finest route first and save JLA for later on the calendar.

Report: Bale to Return as Batman in Justice League?

Christian Bale is in talks to reprise his role as Batman in DC’s upcoming Justice League movie, Christopher Nolan will oversee the project, and Man of Steel-helmer Zack Snyder will produce – and possibly direct – if a new report from Latino Review is to be believed.

The website claims that Nolan is now in charge of the entire DCU at Warner Bros., and is in discussions to act as a sort of Godfather to the project, as well as produce alongside Zack Snyder. The studio allegedly wants the film to be set in the same universe as Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, which naturally means a return of Bale’s Batman. Not only that, but Justice League would also tie in with Snyder’s gritty Man of Steel, which means – you guessed it – Bale’s Batman and Henry Cavill’s Superman would appear in the same universe, in the same movie, at the same time.

While this is all speculation, the well-regarded Batman-on-Film chatted with a longtime source who advised them of some possible scenarios for the future of the Batman live-action movie franchise.

Early scuttlebutt had a Justice League of America movie in development for a 2015 release, a project that would introduce audiences to the screen’s new Dark Knight, with a solo Batman film slated for release two years after that.

Wonder Woman Documentary to Air on PBS

While the status of the Justice League movie she would be a part of is murky , and the new CW pilot focused on her adventures as a young woman, Amazon, is not being ordered as a pilot just yet, Wonder Woman is the focus of a documentary that will be making its TV debut soon.

Following screenings at many film festivals, including SXSW, in the past year, Wonder Women! The Untold Story of American Superheroines will air on PBS’s Independent Lens series on Monday, April 15, 2013, at 10 PM ET.

From director Kristy Guevara-Flanagan, the documentary looks at the evolution and legacy of Wonder Woman, examining her status as the definitive superheroine and how the character has changed through the times – while continuing to influence and inspire fans.

Look: The Killing Joke's Joker Statue

My eyes were unable to properly handle the overflowing amount of epicness at Kotobukiya’s Toy Fair 2013 showroom. DC fans are sure to be pleased with the variety of pricey collectibles they’ve got in the pipeline — including the stunning ARTFX+ statues for the New 52 Justice League and a fantastic Joker statue inspired by Alan Moore and Brian Bolland’s Batman: The Killing Joke. They also have plans for a Superman statue inspired by Superman: For Tomorrow, a Black Canary piece and even one for the best mercenary ever, Deathstroke.

Kotobukiya’s certainly not leaving Marvel fans in the dust, though. They’re working on a set of ARTFX+ statues based on Marvel NOW!’s The Avengers. And to top it off, they’re being crafted under the art direction of amazingly talented illustrator Adi Granov (best Iron Man artist ever?). Additionally, there was a superb Venom and Spider-Man statue on display, a Jim Lee inspired Cyclops (oh, how I miss the ’90s) and a highly detailed Daredevil. As if that wasn’t enough, there’re more sweet collectibles of Star Wars characters, Isaac Clarke from Dead Space 3 (where he’s of course stomping like a boss) and a few from Mass Effect 3. New Batman: Arkham Game Coming This Year

In an investor call, a member of Time Warner management has confirmed that a new game in the Batman: Arkham series will be released this year.

John K Martin is the company’s CFO, and you can read the transcript of his comments on Yahoo! Finance. “And we also have a strong games release this year, which will include the next release in the Batman Arkham franchise,” he says. “So all in all, we expect Warners to post another very strong year in 2013. And with a little luck, the year should be as good or maybe even a little bit better than 2012.”

A third entry in the Arkham series has seemed inevitable for a while, but we’ve had no firm details on what it is or even who is developing it. Rocksteady had hinted that its next game will not be Batman-based, and Variety claimed that Warner’s next Batman game will be a Silver Age prequel featuring members of the Justice League of America – but it also claimed that the game would not be out before 2014.

Is Warners Scrapping the JLA Script?

The outlook is not so good for Warner Bros.’ Justice League of America movie. Rumor has it that the studio may be back to square one.

According to a story from Badass Digest, Warners has reportedly scrapped Gangster Squad screenwriter Will Beall’s script for JLA, with numerous sources citing the same problem: “It’s terrible.”

Some insiders even speculate that the superhero pic may be dead in the water.

Last we heard, the studio was waiting to move forward on Justice League until the release of Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, but it sounds like that may also mean a whole new screenplay for JLA as well.

Chicago: Superman-inspired Kia Optima Hybrid helps those affected by drought and famine in Africa

Kia, DC Entertainment and Super Street magazine worked as a team to develop this one-of-a-kind Superman-themed Optima Hybrid that made its debut at the Chicago Auto Show today. The joint effort is designed to raise awareness for DC Entertainment’s “We Can Be Heroes” campaign, a charitable relief effort to bring help and hope to people affected by drought and famine in the Horn of Africa.

The metallic blue and red sedan, which thankfully manages to look better in person than it does in the pictures, is the seventh vehicle in a 10-month partnership between the automaker, comic book company and tuner as they build themed vehicles representing all of the Justice League heros. A yet-unseen eighth vehicle will be an amalgamation of all seven Super Heroes in one.

There is no mistaking the blue metallic finish with red chrome accents, or the world’s most recognizable superhero’s chest emblem glowing on the hood, but you have to look closer to see the Superman logo on the rear fascia and catch the red glow from the headlights. The theme has been carried into the cabin, where occupants will find custom upholstery and Superman’s iconic shield on the seats and airbag cover. While the hybrid sedan’s gasoline-electric powertrain remains untouched, the Optima features flared fenders, oversize 22-inch wheels and a height-adjustable suspension that is controlled from the cockpit.
