Official: Limited-edition VW Beetle GSR priced from $29,995*

By Steven J. Ewing

2014 Volkswagen Beetle GSR on show stand - front three-quarter view, yellow

Filed under:

Volkswagen has announced that pricing of its limited-edition 2014 Beetle GSR will start from $29,995, *not including $820 for destination. This throwback to the original 1970s “Yellow Black Racer” first debuted at the Chicago Auto Show and will be limited to just 3,500 units worldwide.

The prominent black-and-yellow paint scheme sets the GSR apart from lesser turbocharged Beetle models, and the car rides on 19-inch Tornado alloy wheels wrapped in 235/40-series tires. That same color combination makes its way inside the Bug, with yellow contrast stitching on the black leather surfaces. Additionally, there are sport seats, a sport steering wheel (with a serialized number plaque), plus a unique R-Line dash pad and GSR shift lever.

The Beetle GSR builds off the R-Line model, powered by Volkswagen’s tried-and-true 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine that puts out 210 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque in this application. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, though Volkswagen will offer the GSR with its six-speed DSG dual-clutch ‘box for an additional $1,100. Hitting 60 miles per hour takes just 6.6 seconds in the GSR, and top speed is limited to 130 mph.

Report: UAW membership up for third straight year

By Zach Bowman

UAW President Bob King

Filed under:

The Detroit News reports that the United Auto Workers union has seen membership increase for the third straight year. The organization is now 382,513 members strong, which marks a jump of about 1,800 over 2011. That doesn’t include workers who are represented but don’t have a contract with the union.

UAW membership continues on a steady path of recovery, even in the face of concerted attacks on workers and collective bargaining,” UAW President Bob King said in a statement.

Even so, the union continues to struggle in its effort to garner the support of workers at manufacturing facilities owned by foreign automakers. The Detroit News reports UAW members were handing out leaflets at the New York Auto Show criticizing Nissan for not allowing the union access to plant workers in Mississippi, and we witnessed the exact same tactic ourselves at the Chicago Auto Show earlier this year. King has said that if workers at those facilities aren’t unionized, suppliers and new autoworkers won’t see their wages increase.

Meanwhile, the UAW said it spent around $9.1 million on “political activities and lobbying” in 2012, up from $300,000 in 2011. The jump was thanks largely to the fact that 2012 was a presidential election year.

Chicago: Editors' Choice: Top Five 2013 Chicago Auto Show Debuts

By Steven J. Ewing

2013 Chicago Auto Show - overhead banners

Filed under:

On the international circuit, the Chicago Auto Show often gets slighted for being a rather dull show in terms of actual news and major vehicle debuts. But the Chicago expo is still hugely important. Not only is it the largest show in terms of overall square footage, it serves as the largest consumer showcase, with the highest amount of foot traffic from consumers. Sure, a lot of what’s new here pales in comparison to all of the shiny sheetmetal we saw in Detroit last month, but it’s all still very important.

As is our tradition, we’ve picked our favorite cars of the show (personal opinions, mind you – no fancy official-type or “most important” stuff here) and have compiled them in our usual Editors’ Choice format for your perusal. Have a look below to see what caught our eyes.

Chicago: 2013 Dodge Dart gets all Moparized

By Jeffrey N. Ross

2013 Dodge Dart with Mopar Accessories

Filed under:

Last year, Chrysler announced it would be offering more than 150 Mopar parts and accessories on the 2013 Dodge Dart, and we got a look at some of these parts firsthand at the Chicago Auto Show. Showing off all the optional parts at once would surely create a gaudy monstrosity, so Chrysler chose to equip this particular Dart GT with just a handful of Mopar goodies, which still gave the car a nice and tasteful custom look that is available straight from the dealership (and with a full warranty, too).

Decked out in a factory color called Header Orange Clear Coat – also a very appropriate show car hue – this car added exterior styling parts such as the vented, carbon fiber hood, the bolt-on front chin spoiler and a matte black decklid spoiler. Looking inside the car, you’d think the red-accented interior is part of the Mopar parts bin, too, but this is actually what the standard Dart GT cabin will look like when it goes on sale.

Why GM's 2.0-liter diesel is cleaner in America's Cruze than it is in Europe

By Sebastian Blanco

Chevrolet Cruze 2.0 Turbo Diesel Engine

Filed under:

The 2014 Chevrolet Cruze will have three different engine options soon, including the new 2.0-liter diesel powerplant that is debuting here at the Chicago Auto Show. The other powertrain choices include the made-in-Toledo 1.4 turbo gas engine used in the Eco and upper trim models and the 1.8-liter gas engine (made in Toluca, Mexico; it is also built elsewhere for other vehicles). The diesel is made in Kaiserslautern, Germany. In short, this is an example of GM‘s global network, and the oil-burner is a long-term player in the game: the basic architecture of this engine has been sold since 1985. GM sold over a half-million diesel-powered cars around the world in the last year, including 33,000 Cruze diesels. In Europe, 40-percent of Cruze sales are diesel. The engine is currently used in a number of General Motors vehicles in Europe, including Zafira, Astra and Insignia models from Opel.

Well, almost. Mike Siegrist, chief engineer behind the US engine, tells AutoblogGreen that Chevrolet engineers in the US worked with GM‘s team in Torino, Italy to adapt the powerplant for GM‘s first US diesel passenger car since the 1986 Chevette. To do this, the team tinkered with four main aspects: emissions, diagnostics, environmental conditions (that is, how hot or cold it is outside) and altitude. Siegrist notes the US has higher paved roads – Mount Evans in Colorado, for example – than Europe does, and it also has stricter emissions regulations, all of which necessitated the changes.

Thus, the US Cruze TD has a new intake manifold and throttle body system and an increased capacity exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) cooler that offers better NOx control, Siegrist said. A common rail piezo injection system running at 1,600 bar (the European engine runs at 2,000 bar) offers “really, really good fuel control,” Siegrist says. To start in colder conditions, the US diesel engine has ceramic glow plugs while the Europeans get metal glow plugs. There is also an engine oil heater that can be plugged in if you’re trying to start the Cruze in frostbite conditions.

With all of these changes, the US 2.0 turbodiesel engine actually ends up being cleaner than the European model. Siegrist wouldn’t venture a guess as to how much cleaner, exactly, but he did say it meets the stricter US standards and that, “the margin’s bigger than what you think.” So, for all those times when we wished we could taste the forbidden fruit of a European powertrain, this is a chance for America to get the better – or at least cleaner – end of the bargain. Unfortunately, tuning for US emissions and fuel also means we get less power. The estimated power output of the 2.0-liter diesel in the US is 148 horsepower, but its European counterpart enjoys 163. The price of progress.

Chicago: Mopar '13 Dart is a bruiser of a compact

By Jeffrey N. Ross

Mopar '13 Dart

Filed under:

For the fourth year in a row, Mopar is offering a limited-production car decked with a plenty of add-ons and a unique look. This year’s black-and-blue car is the Mopar ’13 Dart, which was unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show with the now-signature paint scheme. Like previous Mopar models, only 500 of the ’13 Darts will be built. Past models include the Mopar ’10 Challenger, Mopar ’11 Charger and the Mopar ’12 300.

The all-black Dart gets a brightly contrasting, offset blue stripe running the full length of the car, and other styling mods like the aero-tuned body kit, gloss black grille, wheels and mirror caps. Curiously, Mopar chose to stick with the Dart’s standard headlights rather than the darker, smoked lights. The interior gets a similar black-and-blue treatment, but this unique cabin features a blue leather driver’s seat to go along with the black leather seating for the rest of the passengers.

More than just a styling package, the Mopar ’13 Dart also gets some performance and handling goodies to complement the Dart’s turbocharged 1.4-liter engine, such as upgraded brakes with slotted rotors, a lowered suspension, retuned electric power steering and a “sport-tuned” exhaust system.

Scroll down for Chrysler’s official press release.

Chicago: SRT adds new cost-saving Core models to Challenger SRT8, 300 SRT8

By Jeffrey N. Ross

2013 Chrysler 300 SRT8 Core Model

Filed under:

As the high-performance division of Chrysler, the SRT brand used the Chicago Auto Show to reveal new “Core” models for the Dodge Challenger SRT8 and Chrysler 300 SRT8. Similar to a move made by Chrysler in Australia, both of these new Core models will get a significant drop in price compared to the current SRTs, and each will get some new, exclusive styling elements as well. Both new models will arrive in showrooms this summer.

The Challenger SRT8 Core will start at $38,995 (not including $995 for destination), which is $5,780 less than the SRT8 currently on sale. Along with the lower price, this new configuration gets classic colors like Orange Pearl Coat and Plum Crazy Pearl Coat (shown at right), and all models get black accents on the grille, a spoiler, 20-inch wheels and Brembo brake calipers. The interior also gets some unique elements such as cloth inserts on the seats (also used on the SRT Viper) and a “mini-carbon bezel” on the instrument panel.

As for the 300 SRT8, the Core version has a new price of $41,995 marking a drop of $7,000 over the current 300 SRT8 base model. This car also gets similar upgrades – inside and out – as the Challenger SRT8, but it will also have plenty of matte carbon and piano black interior accents and the option of red-painted calipers. The finishing touch on this model is the addition of the “6.4L” fender badges, which is a first for the 300 SRT8.

It isn’t clear what, if any, equipment has been de-contented to create this new lower price, but we’re sure buyers looking to get behind the wheel of either one of these products will be happy. Scroll down to read more about the Challenger SRT8 and 300 SRT8 Core models.

Chicago: We obsessively covered Day One of the 2013 Chicago Auto Show

Filed under:

It’s funny, you can technically refer to this week’s Chicago expo as both the largest and smallest North American auto show on the media circuit. On one hand, McCormick Place offers the most expansive show floor, meaning that, technically, it’s the largest; but in terms of the amount of actual news and vehicle debuts, Chicago is by far the smallest show. Ironic, don’tcha think?

Nevertheless, we’re having a good time here in the Windy City at the show’s 105th installment(!), and while there wasn’t a great deal to ooh and aah over on Day One, there’s still a lot to talk about at the Chicago Auto Show. We’ve collected all of the posts from our coverage today and grouped them together in handy roundup format for your perusal below. Enjoy!

Chicago: Ford Fiesta ST GRC Racecar is hungry for podiums in 2013

By Seyth Miersma

Ford Fiesta ST GRC Racecar

Filed under:

As we reported earlier, the Chicago showing of this plucky Ford Fiesta ST GRC racer points to bigger and brighter days for Global RallyCross. For the upcoming season, you can expect to see Ken Block and Tanner Foust both driving the Ford racecar, and if last season’s results are any indication, you can anticipate quite a few podium appearances, as well.

The Fiesta seen here was built by the Swedes at OlsbergsMSE, and will be driven in anger by Foust in 2013. Modifications are, as you’d expect, extensive, and include an engine, exhaust and braking upgrades, a racing style short-throw shifter and a limited-slip differential. As you can see, the car has been fully stripped out and caged for maximum speed and safety, too.

Refresh your memories with the details of the car, in the press releases below. And if you head out to the Chicago Auto Show this year, don’t forget to drop by the Ford stand to have a look.

Chicago: Superman-inspired Kia Optima Hybrid helps those affected by drought and famine in Africa

By Michael Harley

2013 Kia Optima Hybrid Superman concept - live at 2013 Chicago Auto Show reveal

Filed under:

Kia, DC Entertainment and Super Street magazine worked as a team to develop this one-of-a-kind Superman-themed Optima Hybrid that made its debut at the Chicago Auto Show today. The joint effort is designed to raise awareness for DC Entertainment’s “We Can Be Heroes” campaign, a charitable relief effort to bring help and hope to people affected by drought and famine in the Horn of Africa.

The metallic blue and red sedan, which thankfully manages to look better in person than it does in the pictures, is the seventh vehicle in a 10-month partnership between the automaker, comic book company and tuner as they build themed vehicles representing all of the Justice League heros. A yet-unseen eighth vehicle will be an amalgamation of all seven Super Heroes in one.

There is no mistaking the blue metallic finish with red chrome accents, or the world’s most recognizable superhero’s chest emblem glowing on the hood, but you have to look closer to see the Superman logo on the rear fascia and catch the red glow from the headlights. The theme has been carried into the cabin, where occupants will find custom upholstery and Superman’s iconic shield on the seats and airbag cover. While the hybrid sedan’s gasoline-electric powertrain remains untouched, the Optima features flared fenders, oversize 22-inch wheels and a height-adjustable suspension that is controlled from the cockpit. Read more in the official press blast below.

Chicago: 2013 Dodge Challenger R/T hits the Redline

By Steven J. Ewing

Filed under:

Dodge has added a bit of spice to its Hemi-powered Challenger for 2013, offering up this new Redline package that makes its official debut at the Chicago Auto Show. The R/T Redline builds on the Rallye Redline kit that was created for the V6 Challenger, and we like how these subtle changes add to the muscle coupe’s already classic styling.

In addition to the black chrome 20-inch wheels with red accents, the R/T Redline adds subtle graphics along the beltline. Inside, cars equipped with the six-speed manual transmission get a performance tuned exhaust that allows the engine to send a full 375 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels. (Redline Challengers with the five-speed automatic produce 372 hp and 400 lb-ft.)

The Redline package retails for $1,995 and can be had on both Challenger R/T and R/T Plus models. Scroll down for the full press blast.

Chicago: Toyota Pro/Celebrity race switching from Scion tC to FR-S [w/video]

By John Neff

Filed under:

Toyota has announced that the rear-wheel-drive Scion FR-S will replace the front-wheel-drive Scion tC as the racecar used by actors, singers and celebrities of all grades in its annual Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race. It’s the first time a rear-drive vehicle has been used for the event in 27 years, with the tC having been in use since 2005, and the FWD Celica before that. This year’s race takes place on April 20th amidst the festivities of the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach weekend.

The racing FR-S, which debuted today at the Chicago Auto Show, won’t be left stock either, but rather outfitted with a range of official Toyota Racing Development parts and equipment, such as a stainless steel exhaust, new coil overs and springs, upgraded brakes, a bigger air intake and 18-inch wheels, not to mention all of the safety equipment required to keep the celebrities and pro drivers safe. The company says the performance mods have lifted horsepower to 210 from the standard car’s 200. Check out the build process for the cars in the video below to see just how much work’s been done.

The Toyota Pro/Celebrity race is also about more than just letting celebrities and pros do battle on a road course. The spectacle helps raise money for “Racing for Kids,” a non-profit charity that supports children’s hospitals in the US.

Nissan Ups Performance Ante With New 370Z NISMO, Juke NISMO and Track Edition GT-R

By Darryl

2014-nissan-gt-r-track-edition-1

001-2014-nissan-370z-nismo

At the start of the Chicago Auto Show, Nissan drops a few new performance enhancements to the 2014 370Z, 2013 Juke and 2014 GT-R. The 2014 Nissan 370Z Nismo will receive some tweaks featuring a sportier look outside, interior accents including an Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel and carrying over the 3.7-liter 350-horsepower V6 engine mated to a 6-speed manual transmission w/ the synchronized rev-match downshifting system.

The new 2013 Nissan Juke Nismo joins the 2014 370Z Nismo to get the special NISMO treatment. The Juke Nismo gets over 100 separate performance, exterior and interior modifications. Among these enhancements, the new Juke Nismo gets NISMO-tuned suspension, steering and transmission mapping. Probably the best aspect of the Nismo-Tuned Juke, is that it gets increased power from its 1.6-liter turbocharged inline 4-cylinder engine making 197 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, compared to the stock 188 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed manual transmission or CVT unit will be available as well as an all-wheel drive system.

2014-nissan-gt-r-track-edition-1

Saving the best for last, as expected because Godzilla never stands still, the new 2014 Nissan GT-R gets an added “Track Edition” option available to the lineup. The Track Edition GT-R will feature the same 545 horsepower and 463 pound-feet of torque twin-turbocharged V6 engine and lightning-fast dual-clutch transmission. With the Track Edition, the GT-R loses its rear seats to save weight, more aggressive sports seats up front, integrated carbon fiber front splitter with special brake cooling ducts and a re-tuned suspension with special Bilstein DampTronic shocks ideal for track use.

Chicago: 2013 Nissan NV200 hauls itself into McCormick Place

By Jeffrey N. Ross

Filed under:

Nissan has already announced that its NV200 will be New York City’s Taxi of Tomorrow, but now small businesses can also take advantage of the compact commercial van when it goes on sale this April. Unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show, the Nissan NV200 bound for North America has been stretched by almost eight inches compared to the same van that has been on sale in other global markets since 2009. The 2013 Nissan NV200 will be built in Cuernavaca, Mexico and sold at select Nissan dealerships with a starting price of $19,990 (*excluding the $845 destination charge).

At that price, the NV200 costs thousands less than lead competitors like the Ford Transit Connect and the Ram C/V Tradesman, although it does deliver less cargo volume than both as well. Despite its longer body, the NV200’s 122.7 cubic feet of volume comes in just under the 129.6 cu-ft for the Ford and well under the Ram’s 155.5 cu-ft cargo capacity. The split rear doors and dual side sliding side doors will give plenty of access to the NV200’s cargo area, however, and Nissan says the van is wide enough to accommodate a standard pallet.

The NV200 was designed as much to be a mobile office as it is a hauler, so Nissan made the cabin as such. The passenger seat back can fold down creating a flat space for a laptop, and the center console has been specifically designed for hanging file folders. The base NV200S includes power windows, a two-speaker AM/FM/CD audio system and a 12-volt power outlet, while the NV200 SV (starting at $20,980) adds features such as cruise control, six floor-mounted cargo tie downs, power mirrors and door locks and remote keyless entry. Options include the $950 Technology Package (available on SV only and adds navigation, backup camera and satellite radio), $250 for Bluetooth and $190 for glass added to the rear cargo doors.

Under the NV200’s short hood sits a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder producing 131 horsepower and 139 pound-feet of torque, which is good for 24 miles per gallon in the city and 25 mpg on the highway, matching the combined 24-mpg rating of the Transit Connect. The only transmission available is Nissan’s Xtronic CVT, and the NV200 comes with 15-inch steel wheels, front disc and rear drum brakes, and rear leaf springs.

By Jeffrey N. Ross

2014 Nissan 370Z Nismo - front three-quarter view

Filed under:

With the entire Nissan 370Z lineup having just received some slight tweaks for the 2013 model year, the sportier Nismo model is getting a few more upgrades for its 2014 model year to give it an even more unique appearance. These changes include new gray accents and red striping on the outside, and inside, an Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel and a new red Nismo tachometer front and center for the driver to easily see.

The 2014 Nissan 370Z Nismo is debuting today at the Chicago Auto Show, and it will go on sale this summer offered in just four exterior colors: Pearl White, Magnetic Black, Gun Metallic and Solid Red. As for the coupe’s performance, it still retains the higher 350-horsepower rating from the 3.7-liter V6, which is paired solely to the six-speed manual transmission. Other performance add-ons include a more aerodynamic front fascia and rear spoiler, 19-inch wheels with a sport suspension and a strut tower brace for better rigidity.

Chicago: Kia Cross GT concept gives glimpse of future premium CUV

By Jeffrey N. Ross

Filed under:

Kia is looking to bolster its premium-car lineup beyond newly conceived products like the Cadenza and Quoris. Perhaps the best evidence of this initiative, to date, is the Cross GT Concept that has just been unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show. Showing a larger, more premium crossover to slot in above the Sorento, the Cross GT Concept hints at a future product that could be what the ill-fated, body-on-frame Borrego never had a chance to be.

Compared to the current Sorento, the Cross GT Concept is 8.4-inches longer, 4.9-inches wider and rides on a wheelbase that is increased by 15.7 inches, and it shows a new possible styling direction for Kia as the automaker continues to attempt to venture up market. Some of the upscale styling cues include the clamshell hood. upright front end with signature Kia tiger nose grille and the multi-panel panoramic roof. The true luxury of the Cross GT is apparent inside where Kia has used real wood trim and rich leather on the seats, and there’s also the buttonless, touch-screen infotainment system; rear occupants will have flat screen monitors with Internet access.

Based on a chassis shared with the rear-wheel drive GT Concept, which we first saw at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, the fullsize Cross GT crossover is powered by a 3.8-liter V6 paired to Kia’s hybrid system that gives the luxury crossover a combined output of 400 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque, as well as an all-electric driving range of 20 miles. The engine is paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission, which helps send power to the wheels through an advanced, torque-vectoring all-wheel-drive system

Although the Cross GT is just a concept for now, we could easily see some of these features and technologies appear on future Kia production cars. Scroll down for the full press release on Kia’s latest luxury model.
