Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa Review

By Chris Tilly

The list of Norwich greats is as long as it is memorable, from Trisha Goddard to Tim Westwood, by way of Cathy Dennis, Bernard Matthews and Ed Balls. But one man stands head and shoulders above them all – TV presenter, Disc Jockey and James Bond enthusiast Alan Partridge.

Alan first entered the public consciousness presenting sports news on Radio 4 before hitting a pair of television highs via The Day Today and Knowing Me, Knowing You, although his TV career was tragically cut short when he accidentally shot a man live on air.

Partridge has since been attempting to rebuild his career, first hosting the graveyard slot on Radio Norwich, and more recently presenting Mid-Morning Matters on North Norfolk Digital. And it’s here that we find Alan plying his trade in Alpha Papa, his first foray into feature films.

How Anthony Weiner Became Carlos Danger

How Anthony Weiner Became Carlos Danger

OK, Anthony. If you're going to get back in the game, you need an alias. And not just any alias. You see, a man livin' on the edge needs a name on the edge. A sunglasses-and-'stache, panty-droppin', blast-some-AC/DC-and-fuck-me-on-the-deck-of-the-speedboat kind of name. This is not your Joe Schmo-level sexting here. This is some James Bond, John McClane, Jack Reacher-level shit. So strap in, and get ready for take-off. It's go-time.

“This afternoon the body was identified in Sussex as that of Mr Bhattacharjee,” said Metropolitan police. His death is being treated as non-suspicious.

Aston Martin Blows Some Steam—Or At Least Vapor—With Hydrogen-Powered Rapide S Race Car

By Alexander Stoklosa

shell eco-marathon mater dei

Aston Martin is known for many things—beautiful styling, sonorous V-12 engines, an “in” with James Bond, to name a few—but advanced alternative powertrain research and development isn’t exactly one of them. Well, at least until now. Aston has announced that it is fielding a hydrogen-powered Rapide S race car in the 2013 24 Hours of Nürburgring contest in Germany. Never mind that many automakers’ focus on alternative powertrains has, of late, drifted from hydrogen—Aston Martin appears to have a legitimate prototype in hand.

Intriguingly, the special Rapide S race car can run on gasoline, hydrogen, or a mixture of both. Aston thus is dubbing the car the Hybrid Hydrogen Rapide S, to reflect the twin-turbocharged, 5.9-liter V-12 engine’s hybrid fuel-taking nature. (It’s worth noting that this race car probably is a lot more powerful than the turbo-less civilian Rapide S, which makes 550 horsepower.) The car’s hydrogen fuel is stored in four carbon-fiber tanks—two are located where the front passenger seat normally would be, and two are in the trunk—and together hold 7.7 pounds of hydrogen at a little over 5000 psi. During the grueling Nürburgring endurance race, the Hybrid Hydrogen Rapide S will run using a mixture of gasoline and hydrogen, but Aston Martin will run the pace lap using only hydrogen power.

The actor appeared at the Skylight at Moynihan Station on Tuesday, and was shown in a video driving the 2014 Range Rover Sport to the venue before driving onto a stage, live. From there, the actor who plays James Bond walked along a line of photographers and vanished from sight.

Time Magazine: Was Marx right?

By hnn

Karl Marx was supposed to be dead and buried. With the collapse of the Soviet Union and China’s Great Leap Forward into capitalism, communism faded into the quaint backdrop of James Bond movies or the deviant mantra of Kim Jong Un. The class conflict that Marx believed determined the course of history seemed to melt away in a prosperous era of free trade and free enterprise. The far-reaching power of globalization, linking the most remote corners of the planet in lucrative bonds of finance, outsourcing and “borderless” manufacturing, offered everybody from Silicon Valley tech gurus to Chinese farm girls ample opportunities to get rich. Asia in the latter decades of the 20th century witnessed perhaps the most remarkable record of poverty alleviation in human history — all thanks to the very capitalist tools of trade, entrepreneurship and foreign investment. Capitalism appeared to be fulfilling its promise — to uplift everyone to new heights of wealth and welfare.

Bond 24 Might Not Happen for Three More Years

Skyfall was a big success for the James Bond franchise, but Sony/MGM’s early hopes to get the next 007 film — currently called simply Bond 24 — out by 2014 seem to have been dashed.

According to Reuters, MGM Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Gary Barber told investors in a conference call yesterday that they “look forward to developing the script soon and signing a director. We are hoping within the next 3 years it will be released.”

Of course, Skyfall director Sam Mendes’ decision to not take on the sequel surely didn’t help the studio’s intention to fast-track Bond 24. So what are we looking at now? A 2015 or 2016 release? Still, it was four years between Quantum of Solace and Skyfall, and look how that turned out. Maybe sometimes it’s better to give these franchises some breathing room between installments.

TSA finds woman's cane concealing sword at Dulles

Hiding a weapon inside a walking cane — it’s one of the oldest tricks in the James Bond playbook, and it’s apparently more common than you think.

Screeners at Dulles International Airport stopped a woman Monday after an X-ray of a cane she was carrying revealed a concealed sword.

The Transportation Security Administration said the woman had no idea that her walking stick was also a weapon.

TSA spokeswoman Lisa Farbstein says it’s not uncommon for people to unwittingly carry canes that conceal weapons. The agency sent out an advisory Wednesday suggesting passengers with canes try to unscrew the top before heading out to the airport, just in case.

In Monday’s incident, the woman was allowed to board her flight — without the cane — and did not face charges.

Daniel Craig Celebrates His Birthday 007 Style

By Kurt Ernst

Aston Martin V12 Vantage Roadster - image: Aston Martin

Aston Martin V12 Vantage Roadster – image: Aston Martin

Daniel Craig may be the best James Bond in the history of the franchise. His 007 is far darker than any portrayed in the past, taking every bond movie filmed since 2002 in an entirely new (and welcome) direction.

With three Bond films on his resume, Craig appears to have developed a taste for some of the finer things in 007’s life. We don’t know if he prefers his martinis shaken, not stirred (or if Craig even drinks martinis), but we now know that the British actor has a thing for Aston Martin automobiles.

As The Daily Mail reports, Craig recently marked his 45th birthday by acquiring a limited-production Aston Martin V12 Vantage Roadster. We say “acquired,” since it isn’t clear if the car was self-purchased, a gift from Craig’s wife (actress Rachel Weisz) or a thank-you from Aston Martin for being its brand ambassador.

We’re surprised that Craig waited this long to park an Aston Martin in his garage, since the British automaker essentially offered him a car following the completion of 2008’s Quantum of Solace. Craig begged off at the time, saying that his residence in London was far too crowded and congestion-prone for a car like an Aston Martin. Call us superficial, but we’d find a way to work around that, even if we lived in Beijing (or worse, Washington D.C.).

If you need a reminder, Aston Martin is only building 101 V12 Vantage Roadsters. Each comes with a 6.0-liter V-12 engine, good for 510 horsepower and 420 pound feet of torque. Though more of an open-air grand tourer than a hardcore sports car, it’s still capable of running from 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds, on its way to a 190 mph top speed.

We’re happy for Craig and think the car is a good fit, at least for his on-screen persona. Like Aston Martin, Craig strikes us as British to the core, and we can’t picture him behind the wheel of a Ferrari 458 Italia or a Corvette ZR1.

Could Your Jewelry Stop Hackers?

By Raj Sabhlok, Contributor

Google has been talking about an innovative idea to replace passwords with jewelry — that’s right, jewelry. Actually, the enabling technology could be hidden in jewelry, such as a ring, which would perform secure cryptographic transactions that would obviate the need for the user to enter a password. Sounds very James Bond, but the technology operates similar to a Yubico key where the key is plugged into a USB port for authentication to other devices and applications. In this case, presumably the jewelry would communicate wirelessly with whatever was trying to authenticate the user. Great idea, until you lose your key (or ring). …read more
