Veronica Mars Movie: New Cast Info, Book Series

Fans of Veronica Mars know there’s plenty of cameo potential for the upcoming film. Sadly, Gossip Girl’s Leighton Meester is not one of those returning for the new movie.

According to writer-director Rob Thomas (via TheWrap), Meester was not available to reprise her role as Carrie Bishop, due to scheduling conflicts. Instead, Thomas has decided to go with the lead singer of Twin Sister, Andrea Estella, for the part. He also plans to include a few of the band’s songs in the film.

“One of the reasons I wanted Leighton, beyond her talent/beauty/history in the show, was that we needed a performer who could sing in this important role,” Thomas said in a recent Kickstarter update. “Once it became evident that we couldn’t make Leighton’s schedule work, I decided to cast someone from a band I already wanted in the movie.”

MSN and Xbox May Revive Heroes

Could Heroes be making a comeback? It’s an odd and interesting time for TV fandom, as the return of Arrested Development on Netflix and the revival of Veronica Mars (via a Kickstarted movie) is causing a lot more “Hey, maybe this could come back too!” discussion about all sorts of shows.

TVLine is reporting that a Heroes revival is indeed as possibility though, with MSN – in the midst of planning a bigger push of original programming via Xbox – in talks to launch a new version of the superhero series that originally aired an on NBC from 2006-2010.

Unlike true cult (as in low rated, but holding onto a passionate fanbase) series like Arrested Development and Veronica Mars, Heroes was once a huge hit, only to suffer big ratings drops over its four year run, as the show suffered a lot of criticism from the press and its fans over story decisions made after the popular first season.

Meet the Cast of Veronica Mars at SDCC

With the Veronica Mars Kickstarter ending today having earned well over its $2 million goal — it’s now at $5.3 million and still climbing — creator Rob Thomas has revealed plans to bring the picture to July’s San Diego Comic-Con.

There’s no word on exactly who will be present from the cast — Kristen Bell is a shoe-in, right? — but in a letter sent through Kickstarter to the flick’s backers, Thomas said that there will be autograph signings, a private party, and that there is even an official panel in the works.

“We’re still working with the organizers to figure out if we’ll be holding an official, scheduled panel as part of Comic-Con,” Thomas said. “I’ll be there, along with as many of our cast members as I can bring along, and we’ll be doing an exclusive Q&A session.”

The Veronica Mars Movie: What You Need To Know

With the planned Veronica Mars movie now approaching the $4 million mark on Kickstarter, people are beginning to wonder what the film will actually be about. In other words: What’s happened to our V. Mars over the last decade? We know that the film will center around a 10-year class reunion for the graduates of Neptune High. In a recent chat with TV Line, series creator Rob Thomas said that, “Fans want to see those all those characters back together again, and the reunion set piece allows me to do that.”

Terminator: TSCC Producer on Kickstarter

There’s been a lot of talk about Kickstarter’s potential to help revive beloved television shows as one-off films following the meteoric and record breaking success of the Veronica Mars movie campaign.

There was, of course, some controversy surrounding the use of the outlet to help back a studio owned property. More than that, though, fans have been speculating about how Kickstarter may be able to help shows that were cancelled before their time – and have since gained a cult following as Veronica Mars did – to come back to life. Joss Whedon weighed in on Firefly as did Zack Levi on Chuck.

‘Veronica Mars’ Movie: Rob Thomas Talks Details, Fears And How It Almost All Fell Apart

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Veronica Mars” ended its run on TV with the title character walking away into a pouring rain. It was a bleak finale with a tiny cliffhanger: Veronica (Kristen Bell) had basically destroyed her father’s chances at being reelected sheriff and their relationship was fractured.

Now, six years later, the character will return in a blaze of glory, thanks to a movie Kickstarter campaign from “Veronica Mars” creator Rob Thomas backed by Bell. The Kickstarter campaign promised a movie reunion would happen if it raised $2 million in 30 days, but fans made that happen in approximately 11 hours, ensuring new life for “Mars.”

5 TV Shows We'd Love to See Kickstarted

The implications of the Veronica Mars movie actually happening thanks to Kickstarter are pretty huge. No, it doesn’t mean we’re suddenly going to get every cancelled cult TV series ever getting an instant revival. There are obviously a lot of obstacles to get past in any of these scenarios, especially when major studios own these series and characters. But it’s obvious that plenty of people are paying attention to Veronica Mars coming back in the way it did and several notable actors and writer/producers have openly been tweeting and writing about the situation this week, pondering if it might be a method to wrap up a story they’re itching to return to. There are a lot of TV series out there with small but dedicated fanbases with similar scenarios where a studio doesn’t see enough of an incentive to revive the project on its own… but with fans actively helping get it off the ground, well, that’s another story.

Whedon on Potential Kickstarter Firefly Movie

It wasn’t long after Rob Thomas and Kristen Bell announced their Kickstarter campaign for a Veronica Mars movie that people began to wonder if the same thing could be done for other short-lived TV series. Of course, one of the first shows that pops into everybody’s mind is Joss Whedon’s Firefly.

However, some might argue that Whedon accomplished a similar goal in 2005 with Serenity; in a lot of ways, Whedon was kind of the “proto-Kickstarter,” if you will, in terms of TV/feature revivals. Nevertheless, Browncoats are a determined bunch, and the prospect of more Firefly is always a tantalizing thought. But Whedon says that, even though he’s elated for Veronica Mars, that doesn’t necessarily mean the same thing will happen for Firefly.
