Goyer Talks Da Vinci's Demons and… Dracula?

Debuting Friday on Starz, following the final episode of Spartacus, Da Vinci’s Demons portrays the famous Leonardo Da Vinci (Tom Riley) in his early days, creating incredible inventions while encountering mysterious and powerful foes.

The series comes from David Goyer, whose many credits include co-writing Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy and writing the upcoming Man of Steel.

I spoke to Goyer about his approach to Da Vinci and how far the show might veer into the realm of fantasy, as Da Vinci encounters the real life inspiration for Dracula, among other contemporaries.

IGN TV: You’ve mentioned how you had conversations with Starz about different historical figures that might be the basis for a TV series. What was it about Da Vinci that said to you, “That’s the one?”

Nolan on Kubrick as an Influence

Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan usually plays his cards pretty close to his chest. But in a new article about Stanley Kubrick, the helmer has let loose with how the legendary filmmaker has influenced his own work, including his upcoming sci-fi picture Interstellar.

“From a storytelling point of view, from a directing point of view, there is one thing I associate with what

does, which is calm,” Nolan tells EW. “There is such an inherent calm and inherent trust of the one powerful image, that he makes me embarrassed with my own work, in terms of how many different shots, how many different sound effects, how many different things we’ll throw at an audience to make an impression. But with Kubrick, there is such a great trust of the one correct image to calmly explain something to the audience. There can be some slowness to the editing. There’s nothing frenetic about it. It’s very simple. There’s a trust in simple storytelling and simple image making that actually takes massive confidence to try and emulate.”

Nolan & Bale Not Back for Justice League?

Last month, it was reported that Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale were possibly returning for Warner Bros.’ Justice League movie. However, it now sounds like they may not be back after all.

Scoop masters Latino Review were on the Schmoes Know Movies podcast to discuss the matter. They say the studio was revved up to welcome back its Dark Knight duo for their upcoming JLA pic, with Nolan producing and Bale potentially reprising his role as Batman. However, Warners is now reportedly having trouble getting Nolan onboard, as the director doesn’t want JLA messing with the continuity of his Batman films. There was even some hesitancy surrounding Man of Steel’s Superman appearing in the film (Nolan is a producer on that picture).

Reynolds Disinterested in Making JLA Movie

If and when the Justice League of America movie finally happens it will probably won’t see Ryan Reynolds reprising his role as Green Lantern’s Hal Jordan.

“If you’re going to do comic book movies in that vein, you really have to get them right,” Reynolds told Empire. “I believe that Joss Whedon is the guy that just nails it and Christopher Nolan obviously nails it. So if they were gonna do it like that, it would be an interesting thing to do.”

TDK's Goyer Targets The Count of Monte Cristo

THR reports that David Goyer — best known for being a writer on Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy as well as the upcoming Zack Snyder Man of Steel movie — will direct The Count of Monte Cristo for Constantin Films.

The classic Alexandre Dumas tale, which has already seen two films and inspired the ABC TV series Revenge, will still follow the plot of a wrongfully imprisoned young man in 19th century France who escapes to enact vengeance on those who put him there, but will have the stylistic dressings of recent classics-turned-blockbusters Sherlock Holmes and The Three Musketeers.

By Mark Hughes, Contributor

This Media Stock Is Going to Keep Crushing Apple

By Tim Beyers and Alison Southwick, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Think old tech stocks can’t be new tech stocks? If you do, then you’re wrong. Just look at Time Warner , which has not only crushed the S&P 500 over the past year but is also up more than 70 points on Apple over the same period.

Expect Warner to keep winning. Why? Christopher Nolan. According to the website Latino Review, which has an admirable record when it comes to breaking news about comic book movies, Nolan is close to taking a job that would given him complete oversight of Warner subsidiary DC Comics’ big-screen projects, which, in turn, could lead Christian Bale to return as Batman in a future film. At least one site has debunked the rumor.

If Warner investors remain hopeful, it’s for good reason. Walt Disney has hired franchise builders Joss Whedon and JJ Abrams to handle two of its most important properties and with spectacular results so far. Nolan is in that same class of filmmaker.

Will a deal get done? What remains for the DC cinematic universe? The Motley Fool’s Alison Southwick asks Tim Beyers of Motley Fool Rule Breakers and Motley Fool Supernova for his perspective in the video below. Please watch, and then leave a comment to let us know what you think.

Apple may be lagging right now, but the story is far from over, says Eric Bleeker, The Motley Fool’s senior technology analyst and managing bureau chief. Click here now to get access to his latest research and Eric will tell you not only whether the stock remains a buy now but also what opportunities remain. Batman/Superman Film Should Happen Before JLA

The Internet is constantly abuzz with superhero movie rumors these days, but one of the biggest at the moment is Latino Review is reporting that Christian Bale will reprise his role as Batman in the Justice League of America movie, despite his Bruce Wayne effectively hanging up the cape and cowl at the end of The Dark Knight Rises. The site also claims that Christopher Nolan will oversee development of JLA in a sort of godfather role.

It remains to be seen if these rumors will pan out. However, the rumor has us wondering all the more if it’s really such a good idea for Warner Bros. to be jumping from this summer’s Superan reboot, Man of Steel, straight into a JLA ensemble movie. We’re of the opinion that it might be better to to build slowly towards JLA and first offer fans a movie that almost came to pass a decade ago – a Superman/Batman movie. As DC’s two biggest heroes, they’ve enjoyed a long history together in the company’s various World’s Finest comics and similar projects. In this feature, we explore why it might be better to go the World’s Finest route first and save JLA for later on the calendar.

Iron Man 3's Hall Joins Depp-Nolan Sci-Fi Film

Alcon Entertainment announced today that Iron Man 3’s Rebecca Hall has joined the cast of Transcendence, the upcoming sci-fi film starring Johnny Depp and executive produced by Christopher Nolan.

Hall and Nolan previously worked together on The Prestige.

Transcendence marks the directorial debut of Oscar-winning cinematographer Wally Pfister (Nolan’s TDK trilogy, Inception). While the official release wouldn’t divulge plot details, prior reports claim Depp plays a scientist who is reportedly working on a programming code for the world’s first fully self-aware computer. Hall’s character has previously been described as both a scientist and Depp’s wife.

Filming begins this April in Los Angeles. Paul Bettany, who’ll soon reprise his role as the voice of Jarvis in Iron Man 3, also recently joined the cast.

Report: Bale to Return as Batman in Justice League?

Christian Bale is in talks to reprise his role as Batman in DC’s upcoming Justice League movie, Christopher Nolan will oversee the project, and Man of Steel-helmer Zack Snyder will produce – and possibly direct – if a new report from Latino Review is to be believed.

The website claims that Nolan is now in charge of the entire DCU at Warner Bros., and is in discussions to act as a sort of Godfather to the project, as well as produce alongside Zack Snyder. The studio allegedly wants the film to be set in the same universe as Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, which naturally means a return of Bale’s Batman. Not only that, but Justice League would also tie in with Snyder’s gritty Man of Steel, which means – you guessed it – Bale’s Batman and Henry Cavill’s Superman would appear in the same universe, in the same movie, at the same time.
