Playing with Death: The Appeal of Horror Games

Do you remember your first time? The first game to make you take a worried glance at the shadows playing on the wall? To send a chill down your spine? I’m not talking about a fright, here, but a full-blown attack of the wiggins. Doom, maybe? Resident Evil? More recently, Dead Space or Slender? And as the goose bumps spread, did you duck behind the couch? Throw the cat at your console? Or did you play on, tight-chested, eyes stinging because you were too nervous to blink?

You only have to take into account Stephen King’s bank balance, or the fact that Freddy, Jason, and Chucky are household names to know that people like to play with fear. When the chance of coming out intact is high enough, we’ll leap from planes, swim with sharks, jump motorbikes between casino rooves, and sit transfixed in a theatre, eating popcorn on autopilot. In fact, the capacity of cinema to induce chills was experimented with as early as the late Nineteenth Century. The vampire classic Nosferatu predates Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. Most sane people won’t permit themselves to be captured by terrorists or play Russian Roulette, but when it’s highly likely that frightening events can’t harm us, we’ll get in line. But why? Fear isn’t pleasant. So how can it be enjoyed?

Our First Look at Bethesda's The Evil Within

Shinji Mikami looks up from beneath the brim of his trademark cap, which sits low, shielding his eyes.

“Obviously I like horror,” he muses. “But survival horror has been drifting away from what makes it survival horror. And so I want to bring it back. Bring back survival horror to where it was.”

If anyone can restore essence to the genre, Mikami can. The characteristically subdued Resident Evil creator is returning to his old stomping ground with the debut game from his Tokyo-based studio Tango Gameworks, the third-person survival horror The Evil Within. And while the game may not adhere to all the ideals we recognize from the genre’s golden age – which, let’s face it, were shakily defined in the first place – it’s built around Mikami’s own definition of the genre he helped create.

To Reboot or Not To Reboot: That is Resident Evil's Question

By Jen Bosier, Contributor

As anyone who knows me can tell you, I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with the Resident Evil series. I have invested 16 years into the franchise, most of which have been hit or miss. We’ve revisited the mansion several times, explored Raccoon City, traveled to the far reaches of Antarctica and fought our way through Africa. With the shining exception of Resident Evil 4, the franchise has slowly but surely been losing its way since Resident Evil: Nemesis or Resident Evil: Code: Veronica, depending on your feelings on the latter, story-driven affair. With Resident Evil 6 firmly behind us, it’s only a matter of time before Resident Evil 7 is teased, which makes me wonder: Is it time for a reboot?

Layoffs at Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City Dev

Layoffs have hit Resident Evil: Operation Racoon City developer Slant Six Games. According to a company statement, the layoffs are “temporary” as it seeks new projects, and the plan is to re-hire as many employees as possible once that happens.

Slant Six confirmed that layoffs, providing the following statement to GI.biz:

“This necessary measure has been taken to reduce the size of our team and to decrease interim operating costs while we continue to negotiate new business. Temporary layoffs provide us with a time period to keep everyone’s employment position open with full benefits. The intention is to reinstate all of the people affected when new projects or funding has been secured.”

Sutherland Joins Paul W.S. Anderson’s Pompeii

The 3D disaster movie Pompeii from Resident Evil director Paul W.S. Anderson will see 24’s Kiefer Sutherland play its villainous Roman senator.

According to THR, his character will make trouble for the film’s hero played by Game of Thrones’ Kit Harington. He’s a slave on a mission to save his best friend, a gladiator trapped in a coliseum, and his true love, a young woman betrothed to the manipulative senator.

Set just before one of history’s most notable volcanic eruptions in 79 A. D., the story will use the disaster as the film’s backdrop and, no doubt, for numerous CGI effects in the same vein as 2012 and The Day After Tomorrow.

5 Defunct Developers Who Went Out With a Bang

Game developers are no more immune to the realities of business than any other commercial operation. For one reason or another, sometimes even some of the best simply can’t survive. There’s something to be said about going out on a high, however. Here are five studios who managed a last hurrah worth a round of applause.

God Hand, directed by renowned Resident Evil designer Shinji Mikami, is a wacky cocktail of hardcore beat ’em up sensibilities, surf rock, and oddball slapstick comedy that remains a cult hit to this day. The only thing that could’ve made this game more Japanese is if it was only available in vending machines.

30 Days Later: Dead Space 3

Dead Space 3 is a full-tilt collision between top-notch game design and the influence of run of the mill marketing. What once was a declaration of war to forcibly take back survival horror from the likes of Resident Evil and Silent Hill has slowly turned into a melange of elements that feel increasingly tacked on, from the bad story and repetitive fetch quests to bland shooter tropes that have more in common with Gears of War and Mass Effect than a Dead Space game.

Still, the level of polish with which Dead Space 3 is executed is staggering. The visual and sound design, the core combat itself – largely carried over from the first two games – made for a thrill ride despite the game’s many shortcomings. Plus, Pelican. Not surprisingly, Dead Space 3 is one of those games that split players and critics right down the middle. This carried through to the co-op campaign that forced you to play online with a friend in order to access the content, to the sterile cult-turned-paramilitary bullet sponge human enemies. Some people loved it, some people hated it.

Resident Evil 6 Release Date Buzz

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Screen Gems is readying a sixth installment in their Resident Evil games-to-film franchise given the worldwide commercial success of the series‘ last few outings.

Shock Till You Drop claims that Resident Evil 6 will likely film this fall for a September 12, 2014 release. Milla Jovovich is expected to reprise her role as Alice, while her husband Paul W.S. Anderson will be involved creatively, presumably as director.

Anderson he told us last December, “I would love to bring the second trilogy and the whole franchise to a cataclysmic and spectacular apocalyptic ending, and that’s what I see the sixth film as.”

Zombie Studios on Daylight, Reviving Horror Games

It’s rare to see true horror in games anymore. Industry staples like Silent Hill and Resident Evil have long since moved past their horror roots, and even more recent entries like Dead Space have begun to incorporate more action. With the announcement of its first Unreal Engine 4 game, Daylight, Zombie Studios is looking to reverse that trend.

At the DICE summit in Vegas last week, IGN had a chance to sit down with Zombie creative studio head Jared Gerritzen and Daylight writer Jessica Chobot to talk about creating true horror experiences in an industry distancing itself from the genre, plus how Unreal Engine 4 changes the development landscape.
