The Very Best of Comic-Con

San Diego Comic-Con came and went with a whole bunch of madness in between. If you followed IGN’s coverage last weekend, you might have noticed that there were quite a few notable pieces of news that came out of the event.

You can still see all of it over at our Comic-Con index, but we thought it’d be fun to break down the best of the best across movies, TV, and comics.

The surprise of the con, Warner Bros.’ reveal that the sequel to Man of Steel will actually be a Batman/Superman movie shook Hall H like Krypton in its final hours. We know almost nothing about the film aside from the fact that director Zack Snyder and scripter David Goyer will be back, and that it is scheduled for 2015. Oh, and that it’s going to probably be called Batman Vs. Superman. Yes, the Dark Knight returns…

Batman: Arkham Origins – Entering Blackgate

You’d be forgiven for thinking the epic scope and ambition of the Arkham series couldn’t (easily) make its way to the likes of the PlayStation Vita and Nintendo 3DS. Yet developer Armature has apparently found a way. Due alongside its console-counterpart, ‘Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate’ adapts the proven Rocksteady formula into a portable setting while seemingly losing none of its core traits.

According to the latest issue of Game Informer, Blackgate looks to adapt the concepts of Arkham Asylum and Arkham City into a 2.5D action game that, like its predecessors, channels the spirit of Metroid. Armature’s team, which is lead by several former Retro Studios employees, plans to make this adventure non-linear, with equipment and gear that can be discovered within the dark walls of Blackgate. Those accessories can then, of course, be used to access new areas of the Blackgate prison, allowing the Dark Knight to continue his quest.

Assassinating Batman in Arkham Origins

Whether in movies, television, comics or video games, when Batman needs a change of pace, creative teams tend to lean towards the iconic hero’s formative years. That’s precisely the case with Batman: Arkham Origins, just announced this morning for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii U and PC. Since the game’s reveal, Game Informer’s cover story has gone live, providing us with some critical new details in the next Batman adventure, due out October 25.

As previously noted, the Dark Knight will face eight assassins, including fan favorite Deathstroke, who have journeyed to Arkham City to kill him. We now know that Black Mask is responsible for putting a bounty on Batman’s head, though exactly why will be a key mystery in the game’s story. Also playing into the plot – Gotham City‘s acclimation to its rookie protector. Players will not only see a much more skeptical and potentially hostile Gotham City Police Department (aka the ‘GCPD’, which happens to feature a young Captain Jim Gordon), but younger and healthier versions of big bad guys like the Penguin – who apparently didn’t always have the tail end of a glass bottle shoved in one eye.

Nolan & Bale Not Back for Justice League?

Last month, it was reported that Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale were possibly returning for Warner Bros.’ Justice League movie. However, it now sounds like they may not be back after all.

Scoop masters Latino Review were on the Schmoes Know Movies podcast to discuss the matter. They say the studio was revved up to welcome back its Dark Knight duo for their upcoming JLA pic, with Nolan producing and Bale potentially reprising his role as Batman. However, Warners is now reportedly having trouble getting Nolan onboard, as the director doesn’t want JLA messing with the continuity of his Batman films. There was even some hesitancy surrounding Man of Steel’s Superman appearing in the film (Nolan is a producer on that picture).

TDK's Goyer Targets The Count of Monte Cristo

THR reports that David Goyer — best known for being a writer on Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy as well as the upcoming Zack Snyder Man of Steel movie — will direct The Count of Monte Cristo for Constantin Films.

The classic Alexandre Dumas tale, which has already seen two films and inspired the ABC TV series Revenge, will still follow the plot of a wrongfully imprisoned young man in 19th century France who escapes to enact vengeance on those who put him there, but will have the stylistic dressings of recent classics-turned-blockbusters Sherlock Holmes and The Three Musketeers.

Why A Chris Nolan Justice League Movie Will Work

By Mark Hughes, Contributor

The recent surprise reports that Christopher Nolan is in talks to produce a superhero team-up film that would put his Batman alongside the new Superman has had fans going crazy with speculation and debate over the ins and outs of what this means for DC on film, and what it means for the Dark Knight trilogy. I’d like to discuss the reports and what it all means, and why it can work. I’m going to speak from an “assuming the reports are true” perspective, to avoid constant qualifiers. …read more

Real Life Non-Batman Takes in a Suspect

Here’s your Caped Crusader fix of the hour. A mysterious “vigilante” dressed as Batman — please do note the costume — recently dropped off a suspect wanted for burglary in Britain.

Surveillance footage caught a glimpse of the would-be Dark Knight, a man disguised in a cape and cowl with all-grey sweats and, of course, a big ol’ yellow Bat symbol on his chest. However, as a spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police noted, the masked man’s identity remains unknown.

The 27-year-old suspect in question was brought into a police station in Bradford, where he was arrested and charged with handling stolen goods and fraud-related offenses, according to the report from ABC News.

Batman Documentary Releases Trailer

Director/producer Brett Culp has just released the trailer for what will hopefully become a feature-length documentary, Legends of the Knight, which chronicles the stories of Batman fans around the world whose lives have been significantly impacted by the legacy of the Dark Knight. Check out the video below:

“Human beings have always been stirred to greatness by the tales of heroes,” Culp says. “We connect with Batman because he is the super hero with no super powers. Just as he has committed himself to making the world better, we can dedicate ourselves to a noble cause and make a difference.”

An Even Longer Wait for the Batman Reboot?

Could there be an even longer wait for the next Batman reboot besides the 2017 ballpark originally reported? Possibly.

While this is all speculation, the well-regarded Batman-on-Film chatted with a longtime source who advised them of some possible scenarios for the future of the Batman live-action movie franchise.

Early scuttlebutt had a Justice League of America movie in development for a 2015 release, a project that would introduce audiences to the screen’s new Dark Knight, with a solo Batman film slated for release two years after that.

Obama, Gun Violence, And His Transparent Pursuit Of Guns

By Derryck Green

Angry Obama SC Obama, Gun Violence, and His Transparent Pursuit of Guns

Last week, Vice President Joe Biden gave a feigned and somber introduction to a news conference where the president pontificated and released his response to “senseless gun violence,” setting the tone for the introduction of twenty-three gun proposal measures, including nineteen executive orders that he believes will be beneficial in reducing gun violence.

I think most Americans wholeheartedly agree that what happened in Aurora, Colorado and Newtown, Connecticut- though statistically random- was tragic nonetheless. The country was stunned as it heard the reports of innocent and defenseless people killed by James Holmes while attempting to enjoy a recreational night at a movie theater in Colorado.  If that wasn’t bad enough, the country was particularly grief-stricken when confronted with the painful aftermath of twenty children, literally the innocent of the innocent, gunned down by Adam Lanza at a school in Connecticut.

Though tragic as these incidents were, the president’s proposals during his showroom news conference will do little to prevent another Aurora or Newtown.

In the Aurora shooting, James Holmes purchased his guns and ammunition legally (which were semi-automatic, non-military rifles).  Furthermore, in committing his terror, Holmes may have specifically chosen the theater he did because it was one that explicitly markets itself as a “gun free zone,” meaning he may have known before he committed his evil acts that he would have little to no defensive opposition, thus allowing him to maximize his damage.

In Newtown, Adam Lanza illegally obtained the guns used in the killings from his mother (who had purchased them legally) after killing her.  In addition to Lanza using stolen guns that weren’t his, he had a history of mental illness that many argue contributed to and motivated his passion to kill his mother along with the teachers and students at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

So at base level, the news conference was nothing more than smoke and mirrors, attempting to look busy while doing nothing. Or as liberals love to have it, receiving credit for their intentions rather than the results of their intentions.

But there are other things more disturbing about the president’s news conference.

First, that Barack Obama would purposely use children as tools for emotional and political manipulation and as shields to avert criticism of his proposed agenda is absolutely cowardly as it is shameful.  If his children are off limits and can’t be used for politics, America’s children should be off limits for the same reasons as well.

Second, the fact that the president, Joe Biden and other politicians who advocate “sweeping gun control laws” continue to use Sandy Hook and Aurora as a pedestal to justify their position is breathtaking and immoral. As mentioned above, the president’s proposals had they been implemented would have done little or nothing to avert those tragedies.  More importantly and equally as telling, the President, Joe Biden, nor Senator Dianne Feinstein (who herself has a conceal and carry permit) haven’t used the crime statistics of Oakland (over 130 murders, a five year high) or the murder rate of the president’s hometown of Chicago (which has some of the strictest gun laws in the country), which tallied 532 murders in addition to 2,670 people shot in 2012 (based on statistics compiled by the website “Crime in Chicago“), as motivation to take serious steps at reducing gun violence.

Though the President did mention “the inner-city streets of Chicago” toward the end of the press conference, he has been noticeably silent regarding the increasing and brazen violence on Chicago’s streets since he’s been president, where law-abiding citizens have been living in fear for some time.

This lack of acknowledgement is telling.  What it says is that in the liberal mind, white lives taken at the hands of criminals using guns in Aurora, Newtown, on the campus of Virginia Tech, and in Oregon have more worth inherently- but more importantly, for gun-grabbing Democrats, politically– than the lives lost in the inner cities of America where large concentrations of minorities live.

It’s the same mentality that drove the circus surrounding the Trayvon Martin murder.  The president- aided and abetted by the media and in conjunction with political hacks and race pimps like Al $harpton and Je$$e Jack$on- racially trivialized the death of Martin and manipulated the emotions of his family and their supporters regarding the circumstances surrounding Martin’s death.  The attention paid to this incident- sad as it was and prior to knowing all the facts- was out of proportion to the amount in which blacks are victims of violent crimes by white suspects.

It was noted at the time that there was a noticeable lack of attention and coverage by the President, the media, and race pimps alike regarding the insanely high murder rate of blacks who are the victims of other blacks.  This led many people (but not enough) to the conclusion that the lives of black victims at the hands of other blacks weren’t as inherently valuable as those black lives taken at the hands of white suspects.  This conclusion was a transparent indicator that politics is what mattered most.

The same is absolutely true here.  Twelve people were killed in Aurora, and twenty-seven people were killed in Newtown.  While tragic, 532 were killed in Chicago. Mass murder, though tragic and shocking, is rare; gang violence is much more frequent and prevalent.  If the President and his sycophants truly cared about reducing gun violence, dangerous environments like that found in Chicago would have taken precedence and motivated him to executive action some time ago.

This charade isn’t about reducing gun violence whatsoever.  It’s about government control and the reduction of the liberty of law-abiding Americans, period.  And in attempting to do so, President Obama has become the most successful gun salesman in American history.

Batman Reboot Pushed Until 2017?

Rumor has it that the Dark Knight‘s next solo movie is four years away.

Batman-on-Film says it’s heard that Warner Bros.’ Batman reboot won’t be released until 2017 at the earliest.

The real issue, claims BoF, is Justice League of America, which will reportedly serve as the introduction of this new post-Nolan Batman. Should JLA flop, it may spell big trouble for Warners’ plans for this new incarnation of the DC character on the big screen.

Meanwhile, Joseph Gordon-Levitt has shot down the notion of him playing Batman in either JLA or the Batman reboot. “I don’t think you should believe in any of (the rumors),” the actor told MTV. “If there’s something I’m going to be in, I’m going to tell you about it.”
