Was Diane Kruger Having an Off Year?

By Randy Miller

Was 2013 not Diane Kruger‘s year? Vanity Fair may think so. Among the shocking omissions and additions to the annual International Best-Dressed List, the ultrastylish dresser was excluded after having ranked in 2012.

Which isn’t to say there weren’t some stellar dressers on the list, which happily includes Kerry Washington, Jenna Lyons, Dree Hemingway, Caroline Issa, Lara Stone, Charlize Theron, Stella Tennant, and Tabitha Simmons. Snubs (or decisions construed as such) aren’t uncommon when compiling a list – everyone’s got an opinion, after all – but a few names that appeared (or didn’t) made us sit up and take notice. …read more

Taylor Swift Looks At Rhode Island Mansion, Has Us Wondering Who She’s Crushing On Now (PHOTOS)

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Taylor Swift is known for buying properties near her boyfriends’ homes. She even went so far as to tell Vanity Fair, “Every time the press thinks I like a guy they say I am buying a house next to them,” she said. Recently, Swift was snapped looking at a very fancy new place in Rhode Island which has us wondering who Taylor is eyeing these days.

All jokes aside, Taylor has great taste when it comes to her real estate investments. This home, located in Westerly, RI, is the stuff fantasies are made of. With five bedrooms, more than 11,000 square feet of living space and over 700 feet of waterfront (drool!), we can only imagine the kind of 4th of July party the pop star would host.

The home was last sold in May of 1996 for $3.5 million. Zillow reports that the home was last on the market in 2010 for $24 million — how’s that for appreciation? Currently, the house is not on the market, which apparently doesn’t matter when you’re a fancy-schmancy superstar. Take a look at the photos and tell us, do you think TayTay should buy it?

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Cindy Crawford revealed one of the most awesome photos on Twitter this week: a group of amazing supermodels decked out in vintage Spice Girls clothes! Bette Midler also decided to make a great statement on all the Kate Middleton and Kim Kardashian pregnancy hoopla. @90sgirlproblem made a proclamation that fits our nineties fashion trends post perfectly.

This week was also hilarious in the Twittersphere — maybe the nicer weather has put people in good spirits. Whatever the reason, Michael Carl at Vanity Fair had us LOL‘ing twice, RuPaul gave us a helpful runway tip and Man Repeller and John Jannuzzi questioned some men’s habits.

Microsoft's Long, Strange Trip Through the Computer Age

By Alex Planes, The Motley Fool

On this day in economic and business history…

At the tail end of 1974, close friends Bill Gates and Paul Allen first learned about the Altair 8800 microcomputer, built by MITS out in New Mexico. The young programmers saw an opportunity to make that bare-bones hobby kit useful by creating a BASIC interpreter for its users, which would allow Altair owners to use the popular programming language on their new toy right out of the box (or close to it). The pair traveled to New Mexico — Gates abandoned his degree progress at Harvard for the opportunity — to work alongside the Altair’s creators. To capitalize on their new business, Gates and Allen formed Microsoft in Albuquerque on April 4, 1975.

Paul Allen would later recount the race to complete BASIC and gain the business it would create in Idea Man, an autobiography excerpted in Vanity Fair in 2011:

Some have suggested that our Altair BASIC was remarkable because we created it without ever seeing an Altair or even a sample Intel 8080, the microprocessor it would run on. What we did was unprecedented, but what is less well understood is that we had no choice. The Altair was little more than a bare-bones box with a CPU-on-a-chip inside. It had no hard drive, no floppy disk, no place to edit or store programs. …

By late February, eight weeks after our first contact with MITS, the interpreter (which would save space by executing one snippet of code at a time) was done. Shoehorned into about 3,200 bytes, roughly 2,000 lines of code, it was one tight little BASIC — stripped down, for sure, but robust for its size. No one could have beaten the functionality and speed crammed into that tiny footprint of memory: “The best piece of work we ever did,” as Bill told me recently. And it was a true collaboration. I’d estimate that 45 percent of the code was Bill’s, 30 percent Monte’s, and 25 percent mine, excluding my development tools.

In Microsoft’s first year of operation, its primary business model involved selling something like this…

That’s right — the first Microsoft software came on a roll of paper tape and made a bunch of red lights blink on and off. For the first few months of its existence, it wasn’t even Microsoft yet, but “Micro-Soft,” hyphenated to better highlight the fact that it was software for microcomputers. Once MITS accepted Gates and Allen’s BASIC, the new company quickly secured its first license from NCR. However, revenue was pretty minuscule in Microsoft’s first year, and the three-man operation (Ric Weiland had joined the company after its formation in Albuquerque) banked only about $16,000.

Over the next few years, Microsoft would port BASIC to other popular machines as they entered the market, …read more

Lily Tomlin: ‘Girls’ Is ‘Too Sexually Focused,’ Needs ‘More Range’

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Lily Tomlin doesn’t have a “profound judgement” about “Girls,” but she does have an issue with how sexual the Lena Dunham series is.

“I think it’s too sexually focused. I think it should have a little more range,” Tomlin told Vanity Fair. “But the sexuality is what is going to bring the big audience, and a lot of young girls, I suppose, puzzling over what to do and what not to do or how to do it. Life is very different from the time when I was 20 and the time Lena is …”

Tomlin, who calls herself a feminist, said one of the fallouts of feminism is girls have become more accessible. “Maybe not wisely accessible. A lot of young girls — they’re expected to give blow jobs now. Young, young girls, as far as I can perceive. Maybe 12 or 13 years old. I mean, that’s a rite of passage, I suppose,” Tomlin said. “As a feminist, I don’t want those girls to be used. Maybe they love giving blow jobs, I don’t know. Maybe they do? But I don’t think you really love giving boys in general blow jobs without any feeling to someone you’re not close to. I don’t try to speak for people that young. I’m not that young anymore. But my own sense of self — I wouldn’t give myself away that easily.”

Rihanna wears one with a long skirt for Elle UK, while January Jones pairs hers with an itsy-bitsy miniskirt for British Glamour. Despite the fact that some of her past covers haven’t performed well, Taylor Swift graces two major magazines this month: Vanity Fair and InStyle UK. She wears wispy pastel outfits on both.

Gun Control, Hollywood, And Violent Ignorance

By David Fiorazo

Gun Control SC Gun Control, Hollywood, And Violent Ignorance

They sure won’t be backing off the push for gun control in America anytime soon, but legislative efforts and proposals to curb gun use ignore the nonstop violence promoted by the entertainment industry.

A majority of American adults, 80%, agree with the statement that “violent games and films contribute to violence in society.” That’s according to a brand new Vanity Fair/60 Minutes nationwide poll. Of those respondents, 45% believe those media contribute a lot to societal violence, while 35% believe it contributes “some.”

Massive evidence is available, and countless studies prove the effects of simulated violence on all consumers, but especially on children. Why is Hollywood pardoned for the carnage its product constantly produces? It’s difficult to confront Hollywood decision-makers and hold them accountable when they’re helping get you reelected.

In a 2013 study, the Culture and Media Institute found that in the Top 5 movies – in just one weekend – the tally included 65 scenes depicting violence, 185 people killed, shot, stabbed, beaten, burned, blown up, etc.  Hollywood supporters talk about gun control but are unwilling to address the issue with the entertainment industry.

Meanwhile, Hollywood continues producing the most violent, sadistic movies, television programs, and morbid video games that glorify graphic violence and mayhem. Our culture has been desensitized, similar to the blood-thirsty crowds in the Roman Coliseum thousands of years ago being entertained by human slaughter. One difference is we’re exposed to more violence and death than they could have imagined.

But if this was part of the problem, people would address it honestly – wouldn’t they?

Just a few days ago, California Senator Dianne Feinstein made another plea to ban assault weapons in one of her greatest hits as far as quotes go. Feinstein stated:

We have federal regulations and state laws that prohibit hunting ducks with more than three rounds. And yet it’s legal to hunt humans with 15-round, 30-round, even 150-round magazines. Limiting magazine capacity is critical, because it is when a criminal, a drug dealer, a deranged individual has to pause to change magazines and reload that, the police or brave bystanders have the opportunity to take that individual down.

The heart of the problem today doesn’t lie with the instruments and tools of violence. We can’t outlaw hammers, shovels, knives, and rope, for example. To ban them would not stop evil because evil always finds another method. The Bible teaches that the heart of man is deceitful and desperately wicked, (Jer. 17:9), and America has all but abandoned God.

It’s no wonder we continue to fill Planned Parenthood dumpsters; too many Americans value choice (self) more than they value life.

George Washington, among others, emphasized religion and morality as primary foundations for a free, successful society. This is what the American way relies upon; and the more God is removed, the less morality we will have. Our Founding Fathers believed it would be unpatriotic to remove God from the public square.

In the 1960’s, the Left increased their efforts targeting American classrooms, courtrooms, newsrooms, Hollywood, …read more

Another Spending Record for This Tech Giant?

By Demitrios Kalogeropoulos, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Amazon.com is shopping for some expensive new digs in New York.

The Wall Street Journal reported last week that the e-tailer aims to expand from the 100,000 square feet of office space it occupies in Manhattan. Amazon reportedly wants to boost its footprint to as much as five times that square footage, making for one of the largest corporate expansions in the city in years.

But it would be just another real estate record for Amazon. Back in October the company spent $1.4 billion to buy the nearly 2-million-square-foot headquarters that it had been leasing in Washington state. That purchase was so big that The Seattle Times called it “arguably the richest office deal in Seattle’s history.”

Thanks to the huge price tag on the deal, Amazon’s capital expenditures rose to $3.8 billion in 2012, or 111% higher than the year before. It was also a major drag on free cash flow, which was down by 81% versus 2011.

There’s a bit of a trend of tech companies investing heavily in their office spaces right now. Google is looking to rebuild its Googleplex headquarters from the ground up. The company just shared early drawings of the project with Vanity Fair. Spanning over 1 million square feet, it is still laid out so that no employee will be more than a 2.5-minute walk from any other employee.

NVIDIA also just unveiled plans for its new headquarters. The company aims for the building to be nothing less than a symbol of NVIDIA‘s vision. Like Google’s plan, this one prioritizes the ease of communication. NVIDIA says the building was designed “above all for collaboration.”

Amazon’s Manhattan expansion might not have the same type of unique (and expensive) architectural innovations that NVIDIA or Google are after. But that doesn’t mean it won’t be audacious. One World Trade Center, which will be the tallest building in North America when completed, is reportedly on the list of potential sites that Amazon is considering.

Whatever the location, though, it looks like Amazon’s splashy real estate spending in 2012 wasn’t a one-time thing. The company is looking to book big property deals this year, too.

Fashion's Finest Fete the Academy Awards

By Justin Fenner

Just because the Oscars celebrate the movies doesn’t mean fashion people don’t come out to play, too. Even in the middle of the international Fashion Weeks, the parties that start after the Oscars red carpet wraps up are filled with people who work in the industry. The annual Vanity Fair Oscar Party regularly draws designers like Tom Ford, Diane von Furstenberg, and Tory Burch – all of whom attended the bash this year – and Elton John‘s viewing party is famous for bringing in the stylish set. DSquared2 designers Dean and Dan Caten showed up to the singer’s party this year, as did supermodels Naomi Campbell and Heidi Klum.

A look at those boldface names – and all the other industry darlings who showed up to party – here in the gallery.

Google expansion is latest employee perk designed to spark innovation

Google is already known for great employee perks like free gourmet meals and haircuts, but the Internet search leader is looking to give its workers even more incentive to be innovative in the technology game.

A new 1.1-million-square-foot campus designed according to the working habits of thousands of employees is the ticket.

The search and advertising giant is ramping up to break ground on a 42-acre campus called Bayview next door to its Googleplex in Mountain View, Calif.,that will have nine structures mostly four stories tall, reports Vanity Fair. The buildings, several of which have green roofs including one with an alfresco cafe, will be linked by bridges and look like bent rectangles that carve out room for courtyards.

Google says the structure will be the largest U.S. complex will all radiant heating. It will incorporate environmental factors such as where the sun rises and where the wind blows. As a result, Bayview will be highly energy efficient and filled with natural light.

Daniel Day-Lewis Was Almost in Pulp Fiction

Just imagine for a moment Daniel Day-Lewis as Pulp Fiction’s Vincent Vega rather than John Travolta because it almost happened.

Vanity Fair‘s retrospective on the making of Quentin Tarantino’s Oscar-winning film includes this revelation:

Casting proved to be one of the biggest challenges in making the movie. Harvey Weinstein was dead-set against giving the role of Vincent Vega to John Travolta. “John Travolta was at that time as cold as they get,” says Mike Simpson, Tarantino’s agent at William Morris Endeavor. “He was less than zero.” Simpson had given Weinstein a “term sheet” of Tarantino’s demands, which included final cut, a two-and-a-half-hour running time, and final choice of actors. “One of the actors I had on the list was John Travolta,” says Tarantino. “And it came back: ‘The entire list is approved . . . except for John Travolta.’ So I got together with Harvey, and he’s like, ‘I can get Daniel Day-Lewis, Sean Penn, William Hurt.’” By then, according to Simpson, “Daniel Day-Lewis and Bruce Willis, who was the biggest star in Hollywood, had both gotten their hands on the script and wanted to play Vincent Vega.”

Fall in Love: the February 2013 Magazine Covers Are Here

By Justin Fenner

There’s a definite sense of romance in some of the February magazine covers that have been released so far. Love‘s black and white shots of Cara Delevingne and Edie Campbell, for example, are used for the magazine’s “Clean Issue,” while Vanity Fair‘s picture of Jennifer Lawrence biting a daisy is underpinned by a declaration that the actress is the “world’s most desirable woman.”

That celebration of youth and beauty will undoubtedly continue as stars like Lawrence and Anne Hathway (who covers February’s issue of Harper’s Bazaar UK) head down the many red carpets of awards season. But don’t count out the models: Constance Jablonski is adorned with purple and white flowers on the cover of Vogue China, and Anja Rubik‘s clean and simple cover of Elle UK is no less striking.
