West Hollywood Gay Bars To Pour Stoli In Gutters In Protest Of Russian Oppression Of Gays

By The Huffington Post News Editors

West Hollywood gay bars and supporters are planning on pouring bottles of Stoli vodka into gutters in protest of Russia’s oppression of gays.

West Hollywood City Councilman John Duran is asking gay bars to join in a ceremony on Thursday at Micky’s bar to dump Stoli down gutters to raise awareness that multiple bars in the U.S. are boycotting the product. West Hollywood Councilman John D’Amico will also join in the ceremony, WeHo News reports.

Duran told the paper that his Russian President Vladimir Putin’s anti-gay legislation “broke his heart,” especially because he toured Russia with the LA Gay Men’s Chorus 15 years ago. At that time, Duran “met such a phenomenal community of gay and lesbian people. They were active, creating a vigorous community,” he told WeHo News.

Putin suggests Snowden may stop leaking documents

Edward Snowden, the leaker of National Security Agency surveillance activities, may have changed his position about disclosing more information in the future, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Monday, according to news reports.

Snowden, if applying for political asylum in Russia, may agree not to leak more documents, Putin said in a press conference. Earlier this month, Putin said Snowden, a former NSA contractor, could claim asylum in Russia if he stopped his leaks.

“The conditions of receiving political asylum are known to him,” Putin said, according to a report by Agence France-Presse. “Judging by his latest statement, he is somewhat changing his position, but the situation has not been finally clarified so far.”

Russia will not aid Snowden if he continues to leak information, Putin said, according to RT.com. Russian officials said they have not yet received a formal asylum request from Snowden, RT.com reported.

Snowden 'chose not to release' most damaging data

Edward Snowden possesses data that could prove far more “damaging” to the US government but the fugitive leaker has chosen not to release them, said a journalist who first broke the story.

Glenn Greenwald told Argentina’s La Nacion paper that Snowden, who is currently stranded in Moscow, had only sought to alert people that information they thought was private was being exploited by US intelligence agencies.

“Snowden has enough information to cause more damage to the US government in a minute alone than anyone else has ever had in the history of the United States,” he told the paper in an interview published on Saturday.

“But that’s not his goal,” said Greenwald, who published a series of stories in Britain’s Guardian newspaper based on top-secret documents about sweeping US surveillance programmes that were leaked by Snowden.

His comments came as Russia waited Sunday for a promised request for asylum from Snowden.

The United States wants the former National Security Agency (NSA) contractor returned to them to face trial over the leaks. Moscow has so far rejected that demand.

Snowden, 30, has been stranded in the transit zone of Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport, after the US withdrew his passport on his arrival from Hong Kong three weeks ago.

Snowden on Friday dramatically summoned Russian activists to his temporary base, to say he wanted to claim asylum in Russia until he could safely travel to Latin America for a permanent sanctuary.

He withdrew an initial request earlier this month after Russian President Vladimir Putin said he would have to stop releasing information embarrassing to Washington if he wanted to stay.

After Snowden made his statement Amnesty International reiterated its support for him and denounced what it described as US government persecution of him.

Human Rights Watch accused Washington of trying to block Snowden’s attempts to claim asylum and said that was in violation of his rights under international law.

Representatives from both organisations attended Snowden’s presentation.

But on Saturday, officials in Moscow said they were still waiting for Snowden’s request.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Snowden would have to submit his application to the Federal Migration Service (FMS), Russian news agencies reported.

The head of Russia’s Federal Migration Service (FMS) Konstantin Romodanovsky said Saturday they had received nothing. If they did, he added, it would examined according to the usual procedures.

Washington has reacted sharply to the possibility that Moscow might offer Snowden a safe harbour.

“We would urge the Russian government to afford human rights organisations the ability to do their work in Russia throughout Russia, not just at the Moscow transit lounge,” White House spokesman Jay Carney said.

“Providing a propaganda platform for Mr Snowden runs counter to the Russian government’s previous declarations of Russia’s neutrality,” he added.

US President Barack Obama spoke to Putin by telephone Friday on issues including the Snowden affair, the Kremlin and White House both said, but no further details were forthcoming.

The United States has already rebuked China for allowing Snowden to leave for Russia from Hong Kong.

At his meeting with activists, Snowden vowed he did not want to harm the United States.

Gay rights groups await Putin in Amsterdam

Rainbow flags are flying at half-mast around Amsterdam ahead of a visit by Russian President Vladimir Putin to the Netherlands Monday, as gay rights groups gear up to protest Russia‘s pending anti-gay legislation.

In January, Russian lawmakers gave tentative approval to a bill that makes public events and dissemination of information about the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community to minors punishable by fines of up to $16,000. It still requires final approval by parliament and would have to be signed by Putin to become law.

Putin’s visit is aimed at showcasing growing economic ties between the two countries. With $83 billion in bilateral trade last year, the Netherlands outpaced Germany to become Russia‘s No. 1 trading partner in Europe and its second biggest partner in the world after China.

Merkel tells Putin to give NGOs a chance

Germany‘s leader has told Russian President Vladimir Putin that the Kremlin needs to encourage civil society as well as push for technological modernization.

Putin and German Chancellor Angela Merkel are touring a major trade fair in Hannover on Monday. The trip underlines Russia‘s interest in developing foreign trade, including further business ties with Germany.

At the opening of the fair on Sunday, which both leaders attended, Merkel said real modernization is enhanced by a strong civil society. Germany‘s ties with Russia have become increasingly strained over the Kremlin’s heavy-handed response to opposition groups and pressure on non-governmental organizations.

Merkel argued at the fair’s opening that Moscow should give “non-governmental organizations — the many groups that we in Germany know as motors of innovation — a good chance in Russia.”

Putin orders surprise exercise in Black Sea

The Kremlin says Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered a surprise military exercise in the Black Sea.

News agencies quoted his spokesman Dmitry Peskov as saying Putin dispatched the order to the defense minister at 4 a.m. on Thursday.

A Kremlin statement says the exercise will involve 36 vessels, an unspecified number of airplanes and up to 7,000 troops. Peskov says maneuvers involving fewer than 7,000 troops do not require approval from Russia‘s neighbors.

Peskov said ships taking part in the exercise have already left the Russia-leased Sevastopol port in Ukraine’s Crimea peninsula.

Russia‘s naval affairs are under scrutiny due to the civil war in ally Syria. Russia risks losing access to its naval base in Syria‘s Tartus port on the Mediterranean Sea if the Syrian regime is toppled.

Police: Berezovsky's neck had been bound

Police say Russian tycoon Boris Berezovsky was found dead on his bathroom floor with his neck bound.

Investigators have not specified the nature of the ligature — a cord or other material used for binding — but say a similar piece was attached to a shower-rail above him.

Berezovsky, a one-time Kremlin powerbroker turned critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, lived in self-imposed exile in Britain. His body was found Saturday at his mansion in Ascot, 25 miles (40 kilometers) west of London.

Detective Insp. Mark Bissell of Thames Valley Police briefly summarized findings Thursday at the opening of a coroner’s inquest, which was then adjourned.

An autopsy found the cause of death was consistent with hanging and that there were no signs of a struggle.

South African firm to service Russian choppers

South Africa‘s state-owned Denel Aviation says it is unveiling the first authorized maintenance and service center for hundreds of Russian helicopters operating in sub-Saharan Africa.

Denel CEO Mike Kgobe told The Associated Press that South Africa‘s and Russia‘s membership of the BRICS economic forum eased the way for two years of negotiations with Russian Helicopters. Tuesday’s launch comes as Russian President Vladimir Putin arrives in South Africa for a summit of emerging market economies that groups Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

Kgobe said the new facility in Johannesburg will start off servicing Mi-8 and Mi-17, both aircraft that can be used in civilian or military settings for transport or as gunships.

He said Denel offers lengthy experience in the high-tech field and knowledge of the local environment.

Post-mortem shows exiled Russian tycoon died from hanging

A post-mortem examination found that self-exiled Russian tycoon Boris Berezovsky died by hanging, and there was nothing pointing to a violent struggle, British police said.

Thames Valley Police said Monday that further tests, including toxicology examinations, will be carried out. The force did not specify whether the 67-year-old businessman hanged himself.

Once one of Russia‘s richest men and a Kremlin powerbroker, Berezovsky fled to Britain in 2001 and claimed political asylum after a bitter falling out with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He became a vocal critic of the Kremlin.

Berezovsky had survived several assassination attempts in Britain and Russia, including a car bomb in 1994 that killed his driver.

Berezovsky’s body was found by an employee on the bathroom floor at his upscale England home on Saturday. The employee called an ambulance after he forced open the bathroom door, which was locked from the inside. Police said the employee was the only person in the house when Berezovsky’s body was discovered. They have said there was no evidence to suggest anyone else was involved in the death.

A forensic examination of Berezovsky’s home will continue for several days, police said Monday.

A mathematician-turned-Mercedes dealer, Berezovsky built up his wealth during Russia‘s chaotic privatization of state assets in the 1990s following the breakup of the Soviet Union. In return for backing Russian President Boris Yeltsin, he gained political clout and opportunities to buy state assets like oil and gas at knockdown prices.

Berezovsky helped build Putin’s power base but fell out of favor when the new president moved to curb the ambitions of the oligarchs. The tycoon was charged in Russia with fraud and embezzlement.

Berezovsky later associated himself with ex-KGB agent Alexander Litvinenko, another Kremlin critic. Litvinenko died after ingesting polonium in his tea at a London hotel in 2006.

In recent years, Berezovsky’s fortunes declined with numerous expensive court cases.

Last year, Berezovsky lost a huge legal battle against former business partner and fellow Russian tycoon Roman Abramovich, which left him with legal bills of at least $53.3 million.

Berezovsky had said that Abramovich, the billionaire owner of Chelsea Football Club, cheated him out of his stakes in the oil group Sibneft, arguing that he blackmailed him into selling the stakes vastly beneath their true worth after he fell out of Putin’s favor.

But a judge threw out the case in August, ruling that Berezovsky was a dishonest and unreliable witness, and rejected Berezovsky’s claims that he was threatened by Putin and Alexander Voloshin, a Putin ally, to coerce him to sell his Sibneft stake.

In 2010 Berezovsky also took a hit with his divorce from Galina Besharova, paying a settlement estimated to be as high as 100 million pounds.

UK police search Berezovsky property

British police say that experts in hazardous materials are searching a property after the death of Boris Berezovsky, the self-exiled Russian tycoon who had a bitter falling out with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Police say a 67-year-old “believed to be” Berezovsky was found dead at the property in Ascot, a town 40 kilometers (25 miles) west of London on Saturday. Thames Valley police say his death is being treated as “unexplained.”

They said Sunday they have set up a cordon and that officers are conducting the search “as a precaution” and there is no risk to neighbors. The BBC described the site as Berezovsky’s home.

In recent years, the one-time Kremlin powerbroker-turned-thorn in Putin’s side fended off legal attacks that often bore political undertones — and bit into his fortune.

UK police probe death of exiled Russian oligarch Berezovsky

British police said Saturday they have launched an investigation into the “unexplained death” of Russian tycoon Boris Berezovsky, who was found dead at his home in southeast England on Saturday.

“His death is currently being treated as unexplained and a full inquiry is under way. The area around the property has been cordoned off in order to allow the investigation to take place,” police said in a statement obtained by Reuters.

The statement did not directly identify the 67-year-old businessman, but Thames Valley police said they were investigating the death of a man of the same age at a property in Ascot, a town 25 miles west of London.

Boris Berezovsky, a self-exiled and outspoken oligarch, had a bitter falling out with Russian President Vladimir Putin. In recent years, the one-time Kremlin powerbroker-turned-thorn in Putin’s side fended off verbal and legal attacks in cases that often bore political undertones — and bit into his fortune.

Lawyer Alexander Dobrovinsky told Russian state TV that his client — who had survived assassination attempts in the past — lately had been in “a horrible, terrible” emotional state.

“All he had was debts,” Dobrovinsky said. “He was practically destroyed. He was selling his paintings and other things.”

A mathematician-turned-Mercedes dealer, Berezovsky amassed his wealth during Russia‘s chaotic privatization of state assets in the early 1990s following the collapse of the Soviet Union. In return for backing former Russian President Boris Yeltsin, he gained political clout and opportunities to buy state assets at knockdown prices, making a fortune in oil and automobiles.

He also played a key role in brokering the rise of Yeltsin’s successor, Vladimir Putin, in 2000. But Berezovsky later fell out of favor with Putin, and eventually sought political asylum in the U.K. in the early 2000s to evade fraud charges he contended were politically motivated.

Berezovsky was one of several so-called Russian “oligarchs” to butt heads with Putin.

After coming into power, the Russian president effectively made a pact: the oligarchs could keep their money if they didn’t challenge him politically. Those who refused often found themselves in dire circumstances. Some were imprisoned — like the former Yukos Oil chief Mikhail Khodorkovsky — while others, like Berezovsky, fled Russia.

The assets of these pariah businessmen, meanwhile, were acquired by state corporations or cooperative tycoons, often at bargain prices.

Over the years, Berezovsky accused Putin of leading Russia toward dictatorship and returning it to a Soviet-style system of state monopoly on the media.

In the U.K., Berezovsky allied himself with an array of other Kremlin critics. Among them was ex-KGB agent Alexander Litvinenko, who fled Russia with Berezovsky’s help after accusing officials there of plotting to assassinate political opponents.

Litvinenko died on Nov. 26, 2006, after drinking tea laced with a lethal dose of the rare radioactive isotope polonium-210 in a London hotel. From his deathbed, Litvinenko accused the Kremlin of orchestrating his poisoning, and British police named former KGB agent Andrei Lugovoi as the prime suspect.

Both Lugovoi and the Kremlin denied the accusations, with the former instead claiming that Berezovsky — whom Russia repeatedly …read more

Car bomb defused near Northern Ireland border

British Army experts defused a car bomb Saturday that had been abandoned on a rural roadside in Northern Ireland, a threat that is raising concerns about the region’s hosting of the G8 summit later this year.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland said the car contained a beer keg packed with about 60 kilograms (130 pounds) of homemade explosives. Metal kegs often have been used in the construction of Irish Republican Army-style bombs because they are easily portable and produce showers of shrapnel when detonated.

Police District Commander Pauline Shields said detectives suspected that an IRA splinter group planned to blast the nearby police base in the County Fermanagh border town of Lisnaskea, but may have been forced by a police patrol to abandon the bomb short of its target.

It would be the third foiled IRA attack on police installations this month, following two attempted mortar attacks on police stations in Northern Ireland‘s two major cities, Londonderry on March 3 and Belfast on March 15.

The car bomb was left before dawn Friday on a bridge near the Fermanagh village of Derrylin 4 miles (6 kilometers) from Northern Ireland‘s border with the Republic of Ireland.

Police shut the main road connecting the Fermanagh town of Enniskillen with the Irish capital, Dublin, and evacuated several homes for two days as bomb disposal technicians worked slowly in heavy snow and mindful that the bomb could have been placed to lure soldiers and police into the area for an ambush.

Troublingly for Northern Ireland‘s security and political chiefs, the bomb was left just 13 miles (18 kilometers) down the road from the planned venue for the June 17-18 summit of the world’s Group of Eight leaders, including U.S. President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

British Prime Minister David Cameron, who also is to attend the summit, picked Northern Ireland as host to showcase the British region’s broadly successful peace process — a triumph undercut, in part, by the unrelenting violence of IRA die-hards rooted in the province’s Irish Catholic minority.

“Those responsible (for the car bomb) have neither mandate nor legitimacy. They are totally out of touch with what the vast majority of people in Northern Ireland want,” said Cameron’s senior official in Northern Ireland, Secretary of State Theresa Villiers.

Putin: Russia, China help build new world order

Ahead of a visit by China‘s new president, Russian President Vladimir Putin says the Moscow-Beijing partnership is aiding global security and helping create a fairer world order.

Russia is Xi Jinping‘s first foreign destination as China‘s president. Xi’s talks with Putin on Friday are set to focus on oil and gas as China seeks to secure new energy resources to fuel its growing economy.

Putin told the ITAR-Tass news agency that Xi’s choice of Moscow for the trip underscored a “special character of strategic partnership” between the two former Cold War rivals.

He added that Russia and China have set an example of a “balanced and pragmatic approach” to international crises — an apparent reference to their lockstep opposition to U.N. sanctions against Syrian President Bashar Assad‘s regime.
