Lena Dunham Among Time 100: ‘Girls’ Creator Named One Of The Most Influential People

By The Huffington Post News Editors

She may be one of the most controversial figures in the TV world, but Lena Dunham is nothing if not influential and Time thinks so too.

The “Girls” creator and star has been named one of Time’s 100 Most Influential People of 2013 and fellow Golden Globe winning actress Claire Danes did the write-up for Dunham in the magazine.

“Lena’s unique lack of vanity or shame allows us to consider that we may also be able to accept and express ourselves fully,” the “Homeland” star wrote of Dunham. “This is not only impressive, it’s important. Because it turns out that girls don’t just want to have fun. They also want to be known for who they really are.”

Lily Tomlin: ‘Girls’ Is ‘Too Sexually Focused,’ Needs ‘More Range’

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Lily Tomlin doesn’t have a “profound judgement” about “Girls,” but she does have an issue with how sexual the Lena Dunham series is.

“I think it’s too sexually focused. I think it should have a little more range,” Tomlin told Vanity Fair. “But the sexuality is what is going to bring the big audience, and a lot of young girls, I suppose, puzzling over what to do and what not to do or how to do it. Life is very different from the time when I was 20 and the time Lena is …”

Tomlin, who calls herself a feminist, said one of the fallouts of feminism is girls have become more accessible. “Maybe not wisely accessible. A lot of young girls — they’re expected to give blow jobs now. Young, young girls, as far as I can perceive. Maybe 12 or 13 years old. I mean, that’s a rite of passage, I suppose,” Tomlin said. “As a feminist, I don’t want those girls to be used. Maybe they love giving blow jobs, I don’t know. Maybe they do? But I don’t think you really love giving boys in general blow jobs without any feeling to someone you’re not close to. I don’t try to speak for people that young. I’m not that young anymore. But my own sense of self — I wouldn’t give myself away that easily.”

‘Girls’ Season 2: The Best And Worst Of The First 9 Episodes

By The Huffington Post News Editors

With only one episode remaining in another epic season of “Girls,” we can’t help but get a little nostalgic when looking back at the past nine episodes.

“I can’t tell you exactly what’s going on,” series creator Lena Dunham said at the 2012 Emmys, before Season 2 had premiered. “It would be a spoiler alert. It involves sex, sharp objects …”

There was certainly a lot of sex, and even a sharp object … if a Q-tip counts. But Season 2 was also full of humor, cringe-worthy moments, dream-like scenarios and downright sad scenes.

Allison Williams Talks About Performing Kanye West’s ‘Stronger’ For ‘Girls’ On ‘Late Night’ (VIDEO)

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Fans of “Girls” got to see Allison Williams dusting off her singing chops on the latest episode of the hit HBO show. But it certainly wasn’t on a track anyone would have anticipated. In a scene that Vulture called both “mortifying” and “cringe-worthy,” Allison’s character, Marnie, gave a surprise performance at her ex-boyfriend’s business party. She performed Kanye West’s “Stronger.” But her original take was very different, as she explained on “Late Night.”

When she got the script, she assumed that she’d be rapping the song as Kanye does, so that’s what she prepared for the table read. “The moment comes in the script and I go for it. I rap the entire song,” Williams said. “At the end, Lena [Dunham] came up to me … and she said, ‘That was so great. Um, in the show, it’s just gonna be a ballad.'”

And that’s exactly what it was on screen: a stripped down ballad that actually sounded rather pleasant, but did not go over well in that situation at all.

Sarah Jessica Parker Talks ‘Girls,’ AnnaSophia Robb And ‘The Carrie Diaries’

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Would “Girls” be the phenomenon it is today if “Sex & The City” hadn’t come before it? Not according to Sarah Jessica Parker.

In an interview with Net-A-Porter’s The Edit, Parker revealed that she believes “SATC” paved the way for Lena Dunham.

HBO was very encouraging of the beyond-camera role I played, and I feel that had we not done it, I don’t know that would have existed for ‘Girls,'” she said. “It’s a such a different way of thinking and it’s not conventional.

Fat-Shaming Or Fashion: You Be the Judge

By Dina Gachman, Contributor

Back in October, Lena Dunham wore some incredibly short shorts to a red carpet event and the Internet trolls predictably went berserk. Instead of being described as sexy, her outfit “kept it too real” and instead of having on hot pants she was “pantsless.” That’s funny, because reality star Kristin Cavallari just showed up in US Weekly in short shorts and instead of being depicted as an insane nudist with zero fashion sense, Cavallari is a “flawless” “lean” “svelte” fashionista with a “super-slim post-baby bod.” How messed up it that? …read more

Conservatives, You Need to Watch Girls

By Evann Gastaldo It seems there’s nothing about Girls a conservative would enjoy: creator Lena Dunham is a card-carrying member of the Obama faction, and the HBO show features no references to religion or traditional morality (nor any Republican characters). But if conservatives are going to complain about the state of our culture,…

Oscar Winner Diablo Cody on Rocking the Boys' Club Boat

By Dina Gachman, Contributor There has been a lot of discussion recently about the state of women in the film industry. The numbers aren’t great, and for every Kathryn Bigelow or Lena Dunham out there, there’s a small army of male writers or directors getting work. Diablo Cody has definitely broken through the boys’ club, but she’s still passionate and vocal about the need for more opportunities for women in film, and in business in general.

Golden Globes 2013: The Very Best Looks From the Red Carpet

By Christina Perez

Last season’s runway rivalry didn’t quite reprise itself on Sunday’s Golden Globes red carpet – but almost. Hedi Slimane‘s new vision for Saint Laurent found a muse in Rosie Huntington-Whiteley; the model-actress (and her Angelina-esque right leg) looked divine in Spring 2013’s gauzy, bow-necked halter gown. Meanwhile, Raf Simons‘s modern Christian Dior was out in full force on not one but two lovely leading ladies. Jennifer Lawrence – who took home the Globe for her work in Silver Linings Playbook – made a strong case for minimalism in the label’s Fall 2012 crimson Couture ballgown, while Marion Cotillard was a vision of modern-day sweetness in a custom asymmetrical strapless shift.

But Slimane and Simons weren’t the only big-name designers who made an impact on the red carpet. Zac Posen was well-represented; not only did the designer dress Naomi Watts in a gorgeous merlot gown from his Pre-Fall 2013 collection, but he also dressed the night’s big winner Lena Dunham in a raisin-hued gown complete with Posen’s signature body-flattering seaming. Oscar de la Renta, too, had a strong showing. Jessica Alba looked dreamy in the designer’s Pre-Fall 2013 sherbet-colored trumpet dress, while Zooey Deschanel glowed in a vivid red strapless number.

Click through to see all those – plus Jessica Chastain‘s seafoam Calvin Klein, Kathryn Bigelow‘s embellished Prada, Sienna Miller‘s pale pink Erdem, and more – right here in our roundup of the very best looks from 2013 Golden Globes night.
