Microsoft's Long, Strange Trip Through the Computer Age

By Alex Planes, The Motley Fool

On this day in economic and business history…

At the tail end of 1974, close friends Bill Gates and Paul Allen first learned about the Altair 8800 microcomputer, built by MITS out in New Mexico. The young programmers saw an opportunity to make that bare-bones hobby kit useful by creating a BASIC interpreter for its users, which would allow Altair owners to use the popular programming language on their new toy right out of the box (or close to it). The pair traveled to New Mexico — Gates abandoned his degree progress at Harvard for the opportunity — to work alongside the Altair’s creators. To capitalize on their new business, Gates and Allen formed Microsoft in Albuquerque on April 4, 1975.

Paul Allen would later recount the race to complete BASIC and gain the business it would create in Idea Man, an autobiography excerpted in Vanity Fair in 2011:

Some have suggested that our Altair BASIC was remarkable because we created it without ever seeing an Altair or even a sample Intel 8080, the microprocessor it would run on. What we did was unprecedented, but what is less well understood is that we had no choice. The Altair was little more than a bare-bones box with a CPU-on-a-chip inside. It had no hard drive, no floppy disk, no place to edit or store programs. …

By late February, eight weeks after our first contact with MITS, the interpreter (which would save space by executing one snippet of code at a time) was done. Shoehorned into about 3,200 bytes, roughly 2,000 lines of code, it was one tight little BASIC — stripped down, for sure, but robust for its size. No one could have beaten the functionality and speed crammed into that tiny footprint of memory: “The best piece of work we ever did,” as Bill told me recently. And it was a true collaboration. I’d estimate that 45 percent of the code was Bill’s, 30 percent Monte’s, and 25 percent mine, excluding my development tools.

In Microsoft’s first year of operation, its primary business model involved selling something like this…

That’s right — the first Microsoft software came on a roll of paper tape and made a bunch of red lights blink on and off. For the first few months of its existence, it wasn’t even Microsoft yet, but “Micro-Soft,” hyphenated to better highlight the fact that it was software for microcomputers. Once MITS accepted Gates and Allen’s BASIC, the new company quickly secured its first license from NCR. However, revenue was pretty minuscule in Microsoft’s first year, and the three-man operation (Ric Weiland had joined the company after its formation in Albuquerque) banked only about $16,000.

NCR Delivers Airline Passengers a Record 3 Million Electronic Boarding Passes in March

New Ad Injection and Mobile Wallet Functions Make Mobile Boarding Passes More Valuable to Airlines, Passengers

DULUTH, Ga.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Air travelers continue to flock to the speed and convenience of mobile boarding passes, pushing the number of mobile boarding passes delivered by NCR Corporation in March to more than 3 million, a record number for the company.

“In addition to making traveling easier – allowing passengers to check in on their own schedules, bypass check-in counter lines at the airport and go right to the security check-point – there’s definitely a ‘cool’ factor to using mobile boarding passes that’s exciting for travelers,” said NCR Travel Vice President and General Manager Tyler Craig.

NCR Mobile Pass delivers a patented 2D bar code onto a mobile device, allowing passengers to check in remotely and go directly to airport security check-points when they arrive at an airport. Mobile boarding passes save valuable time for passengers and free up airline staff to provide greater assistance to those who might need it. NCR Mobile Pass technology is offered by airlines across the globe.

The launch of NCR Dynamic Wallet and NCR Ad Injection functionality makes mobile boarding passes even more useful.

With NCR Dynamic Wallet, information on passengers’ mobile boarding passes, such as boarding gate and flight departure times, is updated in real time and eliminates the need for travelers to check central flight information areas or check flight status with airline agents.

NCR Ad Injection allows airlines to deliver messages to passengers via their electronic boarding passes. These might include discount or upgrade offers, advertisements for the airline or coupons for airport shops and restaurants. A recent survey for NCR showed that 56 percent of travelers purchase things at the airport and that almost 40 percent would be likely to buy more if they received coupons or offers on their mobile boarding passes. For more information about the survey, please click here.

NCR will be highlighting its mobile boarding pass technology at the upcoming Passenger Terminal Expo 2013, from April 9 – 11 in Geneva, Switzerland. For more information, please click here or visit the NCR booth #1160 during the show.

SBI Partners with NCR to Make Everyday Life Easy for Its Customers by Introducing Intelligent Cash Deposit ATMs

India’s largest order for 600 Cash Deposit ATMs will now allow Indian consumers to deposit cash at the ATM beyond banking hours

Mumbai, India–(BUSINESS WIRE)– To enhance its customer service experience, State Bank of India (SBI), India‘s largest bank, has chosen NCR Corporation (NYSE: NCR), India‘s largest ATM manufacturer and service provider, to deploy 600 NCR SelfServ 32 Intelligent Cash Deposit ATMs across India. This order is the country’s largest single order for cash deposit ATMs.

In a typical branch, check and cash withdrawals make up more than 60 percent of transactions performed at the teller counter (Source: NCR internal study). With the adoption of NCR SelfServ intelligent deposit ATMs, SBI will be able to reduce long queues at its branch and will give its customers the flexibility to execute everyday cash deposit transactions beyond banking hours.

Migrating high volume deposit transactions from the branch to the ATM reduces cost significantly for banks. A single cash withdrawal or deposit transaction at the branch can be reduced by up to 75 percent. A normal withdrawal typically costs a bank between Rs. 40 to Rs. 45 per transaction, while the same transaction may cost about Rs. 10 to Rs. 15 at the ATM (Source: NCR internal study).

Mr. Jaivinder Gill, managing director for NCR India, said, “We are delighted to work with SBI to lead the intelligent cash deposit revolution in the country. The Retail Banking Report for Deposit Automation and Recycling, 2012, indicates that some of the strongest drivers of growth for cash deposit ATMs in India are ‘queue reduction’ and ‘customer demand.’ The report further predicts that the installed base of ATMs in India with automated deposit functionality is expected to grow five folds reaching 17,000 by 2017 – clearly indicating a trend of increasing consumer demand for counter-based transactions to be available 24×7 on the self-service channel.

“As consumers do more through the ATM channel, it becomes imperative for financial institutions to ensure their ATM network is secure and constantly up and running. The NCR SelfServ 32 with its large cash holding capacity ensures higher availability, while its innovative security feature validates genuine and counterfeit notes before accepting or crediting, and further facilitates tracing every note to the depositor to counter frauds,” added Gill.

NCR Brings Contactless ATMs to Poland with ING

Waving card over reader creates a faster, more modern customer experience

WARSAW, Poland–(BUSINESS WIRE)– NCR Corporation (NYS: NCR) , a global technology company, has introduced one of the world’s first contactless ATM environments, working with MasterCard and ING Bank Śląski to bring the new technology to customers in Poland. This pilot program was launched in November in Katowice and Warsaw, allowing ING customers in Poland to quickly and easily withdraw cash from an ATM without needing to insert their card.

Financial institutions and retailers are looking for a variety of methods to deliver flexible payment options for their customers. Beyond NFC-enabled devices, NCR has implemented or introduced proof of concepts using contactless cards, 2D barcode transactions, and one-time PINs for ATM transactions alone.

The contactless-card enabled machines permit ING customers with VISA and MasterCard debit contactless cards to initiate fast cash withdrawals by holding their card near the ATM reader. Upon a confirmation of their PIN code, customers will have the choice of a cash dispense in common “fast cash” values.

“Introduction of such technology means faster and more convenient transactions for ING Bank customers. It is not only the first installation of this kind in Poland, but also one of the first in the world,” said Barbara Borgieł-Cury, head of Accounts, Payments and Cards Department at ING Bank Śląski. “We want our customer to have access to the most modern, convenient and safest solutions on the market. Contactless and mobile transactions are the future of financial sector development in Poland and around the world. ING Bank Śląski was one of the first institutions in Poland to offer cards with a built-in contactless technology to their customers. And now, with the help of NCR, we are one of the first in the world to offer innovative contactless-card ATM dispense functionality.”

Today in Poland 70 percent of all cards are equipped with contactless technology, and more than 50 percent of EFTPOS accept contactless transactions. With the number of contactless transactions in the country growing very rapidly the demand for more contactless options has increased.

“A contactless dispense transaction is approximately 25 percent faster than a traditional withdrawal requiring insertion of the card into the card reader,” said Ruth Fornell, vice president of Global Professional Services, NCR. “At NCR, we are committed to making every …read more

NCR Silver Makes Everyday Easier for Small Businesses with Social Media Integration

DULUTH, Ga.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– NCR Corporation announced today that the NCR Silvermobile point of sale (POS) solution has been enhanced to empower small business owners to provide marketing messages to customers via the NCR Silver email marketing engine and update businesses’ Facebook pages with the same messages at the same time.

The NCR Silver social media update makes marketing to customers easier, with more impact, than ever before. With one click, small business owners can now engage in email marketing campaigns and at the same time update their businesses’ Facebook page with the same messages about their business or products. The integrated social media marketing saves small business owners time, streamlines their marketing efforts and empowers them to build a community of customers, which in turn drives loyalty and sales.

According to industry research, 73 percent of small business owners use social media as part of their marketing mix, and the majority of them don’t employ anyone to help with this work. Forty-one percent of small business owners report that making their marketing dollars go further is one of their biggest challenges. So maximizing the effective use of free social media sites, while also maximizing business owners limited time, is crucial to building and maintaining a successful business.

For more custom messages, like “we miss you” campaigns or special discounts for the most loyal customers, the social sharing feature can be easily turned off so that a business‘s broader social audience doesn’t see these more targeted messages.

“For the small business owner who is doing everything, time saved by integrating Facebook posts with their email campaigns is time they can spend helping customers, growing their businesses or being with their families,” said Christian Nahas, vice president and general manager of the NCR small business team. “NCR Silver’s mission is to help small businesses achieve their goals. We consistently hear that time and resources are two things small business owners can always use more of. With the social media marketing update, NCR Silver is giving these operators back valuable time while adding value to their business.”

NCR Silver’s cloud-based architecture enables this social media integration update to deploy automatically to existing NCR Silver customers and is included in all new installations for new customers. Earlier in the month NCR Silver was updated to provide business owners with the ability to launch and manage gift card programs.

AviancaTaca Deploys NCR TouchPort™ Kiosks to Make Check-in and Travel Easier for Passengers

DULUTH, Ga.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– NCR Corporation (NYS: NCR) announced today the successful deployment of NCR TouchPort 70 kiosks for AviancaTaca, a leading Latin American airline.

AviancaTaca is experiencing significant growth in the number of passengers it serves and continues to add new planes and routes. As a result, the airline required a technology partner with solutions to enhance the passenger experience and alleviate congestion at check-in areas. This builds on AviancaTaca’s commitment to innovative, agile and high-quality service.

AviancaTaca selected the NCR TouchPort because of NCR‘s superior technology and global reputation, as well as specific features of the TouchPort, including a passport reader, not offered by other potential technology partners. NCR will also provide support services.

“The addition of the NCR kiosks expands self-service check-in access for our travelers to the channel of their choice – at home on the web, en route via mobile or at the airport on a kiosk,” said Carmen Ravello, IT support leader in South America for AviancaTaca. “Offering self-service check-in with NCR technology supports our objective of creating an exceptional experience for the travelers who choose to fly with us.”

The TouchPort kiosk features an all-in-one construction, with touchscreen, printer and other components in a sleek and compact enclosure that takes up very little valuable airport floor space. It can be installed in various places, including existing ticket counters, podiums and table tops for maximum integration into an airline’s or airport’s design scheme.

The AviancaTaca devices have been deployed at nine Peruvian airports: Aeropuerto Internacional Jorge Chavez Lima, Aeropuerto Internacional Puerto Maldonado, Aeropuerto Internacional Cusco, Aeropuerto Trujillo, Aeropuerto Internacional Chiclayo, Aeropuerto Internacional Piura, Aeropuerto Juliaca, Aeropuerto Tarapoto and Aeropuerto Arequipa.

“Self-service check-in has become pervasive as airlines and airports around the world seek to make check-in faster and easier for their passengers,” said NCR Travel Vice President and General Manager Tyler Craig. “We are now beginning to see the industry explore new ways to deploy kiosks, which have already made a significant impact on check-in times and passenger satisfaction, to solve other business challenges such as processing baggage, managing cash and driving incremental revenue.”

The kiosks will run on a common use self-service (CUSS) platform, allowing passengers to use the kiosks for self-check-in for flights on all the airlines that operate at the airport.

This is the first time that Ordos Ejin Horo airport has offered self-service check-in for passengers. NCR‘s technology is a major part of Ordos Ejin Horo Airport‘s and Sinonet’s effort to accommodate the rapid increase in passengers at the airport.

NCR will also provide maintenance services for the kiosks to ensure maximum availability.

Founded in 2007, the Ordos Ejin Horo Airport is a regional airport with routes connecting to more than 30 cities in northern China. The NCR TouchPort kiosk comes with a faster processing speed, reducing passenger transaction times. The kiosks also feature two-sided thermal paper technology, which will save up to 40% on paper costs, help reduce staff workload for paper replenishment and facilitate group check-in. The kiosks can also read mobile barcodes, drivers’ licenses and passports making the check-in process even easier and giving Ordos Ejin Horo Airport the potential to develop paperless self check-in in the future.

Ordos Ejin Horo Airport has set a best practice model for other regional airports in China by providing a shared self-service check-in offering,” said NCR Travel Vice President and General Manager Tyler Craig. “The NCR self check-in kiosks help regional airports make traveling easier and more convenient and truly bring cost savings and efficiency to both airports and airlines.”

On CAPS, 93% of the 147 members who have rated MICROS believe the stock will outperform the S&P 500 going forward.

Earlier this week, one of those Fools, All-Star TMFDeej, brought MICROS‘ potential catalyst to our community’s attention: “Following ValueAct Capital after it was announced [Tuesday] that it has purchased a 7.5% stake in the company. Good things usually result when this activist shakes things up.”

If you want market-thumping returns, you need to put together the best portfolio you can. Of course, despite a strong four-star rating, MICROS may not be your top choice.

Elavon Launches Mobile Innovation Center

Atlanta center to have sister facility in Europe

ATLANTA–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Elavon, a wholly owned subsidiary of U.S. Bancorp (NYS: USB) and a leading global payment solutions provider, has opened a mobile innovation center at its Atlanta headquarters to focus on merchant-based mobile solutions. The center is expected to add at least 50 jobs in the next 12 to 18 months. Known internally as “The Grove,” the center is focused on harvesting innovation around new technology and product development for mobile payments and expanding on Elavon’s existing mobile solutions, including VirtualMerchant Mobile in the U.S. and MobileMerchant in Europe. It will also allow Elavon to leverage additional third party relationships similar to the recently announced distribution and back-end processing agreement with NCR to market NCR Silver through Elavon’s existing sales channels.

The Grove will be managed by a full-service, cross-functional team and will operate as a separate business unit with offices within Elavon’s headquarters. The team’s focus will be to create new technologies that are compatible with Elavon’s full scope of payments and security solutions. As mobile payments become more acceptable by merchants and customers alike, technology must keep pace with the needs on both sides of the transaction.

The Grove is yet another example of the commitment of Elavon’s parent company, U.S. Bancorp, to be an industry leader in banking and payment innovation. U.S. Bancorp’s investment in innovation has resulted in the company being fast – and often first – to market with new mobile features and functionality.

“Our focus will be on new technologies that enable merchants to accept payments via mobile devices while also ensuring the ease of use and safety of the transaction from the customer’s perspective,” said Marianne Johnson, executive vice president of global product and innovation for Elavon. “Payments are moving closer to the concept of the mobile wallet housed on a smart phone or other device.”

Elavon has begun hiring for the center and is seeking professionals with skills including mobile product development, systems design and architecture, operations and deployment, mobile sales engineering and quality assurance. “As a separate business, The Grove will have the feel of a start-up operation, but within the stability of an established, global brand,” Johnson said. “We are looking for skilled professionals who will thrive in …read more

Catholic newspaper draws rebuke from bishop

A Kansas City-based newspaper known for unflinching coverage of the Catholic church scandal was rebuked by the area bishop after calling for his ouster.

The National Catholic Reporter, an independent weekly, called for the removal or resignation of Bishop Robert Finn, leader of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph. The newspaper’s comments came after Finn was convicted of failing to report suspected child abuse by a priest.

Finn said in a recent editorial in the diocese newspaper that parishioner anger is growing over the NCR‘s challenges to Catholic orthodoxy on various topics.

The battle illustrates tensions between U.S. bishops and groups that call themselves Catholic but that aren’t sanctioned by the church.

NRC editor Dennis Coday says the newspaper serves an important role.
