Robot Rock: Daft Punk Stars in Saint Laurent's Music Project

By Justin Fenner

The two masked French gentlemen who make up the iconic band known as Daft Punk are the latest musicians to star in Saint Laurent‘s Music Project campaign.

The band unveiled details about its upcoming album, Random Access Memory, in a video screened Friday night at Coachella. In it, they, singer Pharell Williams, and guitarist Nile Rodgers were seen wearing sequined tuxedo jackets – the Saint Laurent Black Glitter “Le Smoking” Jacket, in official parlance – created by Hedi Slimane. On Saturday, the house released photos of the duo wearing the jackets, and uploaded another video to YouTube that features additional photos of the performers in their sparkly stage wear.

Daft Punk has been working with Saint Laurent since Slimane’s debut collection for the house, which was shown last October. The duo created a 15-minute soundtrack for Slimane’s Spring 2013 show. They join Marilyn Manson, Courtney Love, and a number of other musicians who’ve been featured in the Music Project campaign. Take look at Daft Punk‘s video below, and find their ads here in the gallery.

Every season has its haul of It Bags – the ones that make street style photographers go crazy and inspire looks of envy from every woman around you. And Spring 2013 is blooming with a dizzying array of color and shapes, varying from sleek and simple to festooned with appliques and visual effects. Mulberry’s Willow bag, for example, has a minimal shape that nonetheless makes a bright splash in mint green, while Sophia Webster‘s Azealia Striped Python Clutch explodes with a variety of candy hues.

Beautiful People: Marilyn Manson to Star in Upcoming Saint Laurent Campaign

By Justin Fenner

Continuing on its path of featuring singers in its campaigns, Saint Laurent has reportedly tapped Marilyn Manson as the face of an upcoming series of ads.

Scene magazine editor in chief Peter Davis tweeted what appeared to be a picture of the campaign on Friday morning. A spokeswoman for Saint Laurent confirmed to POPSUGAR Fashion News that Manson will indeed appear in a set of ads, but couldn’t say when or where they’d make their debut.

Manson certainly won’t be the first musician to appear in one of the brand’s campaigns. In January, the brand’s creative director Hedi Slimane released a few shots he took of Beck.

A look at what Manson’s ads might look like here in the gallery.

PPR Made an Epic Video to Announce Its Name Change

By Justin Fenner

In just a few month’s time, the French luxury conglomerate now known as PPR plans to change its name to Kering. The switch is meant to reflect a major shift in the way the business operates, and in how it wants to be perceived.

Since it began selling off its retail assets, like the French department store chain Printemps, in 2006, PPR has drilled its focus down to the luxury and sportswear brands it owns. The most noticeable thing about the new name, which was announced at a press conference on Friday, is that it sounds like the word “caring” – and that’s not a coincidence. In a statement, the company said the name is meant to express “our company culture of taking care of our brands, people, stakeholders, and the environment.”

It also comes with a logo, a stylized owl with a heart-shaped face, that’s meant to telegraph wisdom and nurturing. A new slogan, “Empowering Imagination,” helps to extend that sentiment. After all, the company’s brands – like Stella McCartney, Saint Laurent, and Alexander McQueen – have grown because of investment, monetary and otherwise, from the executives at PPR.

And in the video, a dramatic visual journey from the designer’s studio to the runway and then to the soccer pitch, a strong male echoes the new theme once more. “Imagination needs wings,” it says. “Imagination needs caring to become a reality.”

Watch ideas take flight in the video above.

Major Agencies Hiring Women As Male Models

By B. Christopher Agee

sex change Major agencies hiring women as male models

Leftists support many policies, including gay marriage and women in combat, that seek to erase traditional gender roles seen as outdated and non-inclusive.

We are all humans, the left claims, and there is basically no difference between the two sexes. Modern progressives seemingly ignore indisputable and overwhelming evidence to the contrary in a vain adherence to their own flawed worldview.

One of the latest trends proving this cultural shift is found in the fashion world, in which more and more women are being signed to contracts as male models.

Major agencies including Ford Models are pioneering the new practice; and one model, Casey Legler, is proudly self-identified as the only woman in the industry working full-time as a man.

She called the opportunity “a unique little moment that fashion is allowing to have happen.”

Another modeling agency, Saint Laurent, recently signed a woman to represent a 2013 campaign for Hedi Slimane’s menswear line.

One media report of the announcement touted the model’s “natural androgyny”; and the agency presented a picture of her on its Facebook page with the caption, “The Saint Laurent Boy is a Girl.”

It is becoming easier to find proponents of creating a gender-neutral pronoun for the English language, similar to one recently adopted in Sweden.

These constant attacks on what were seen as bedrock principles throughout humanity are being waged more frequently and in a much bolder manner.

It may be easy for culture warriors to grow discouraged; but now more than ever, we must align against those who seek to fundamentally transform this nation’s fabric in favor of moral relativity and societal confusion. Only by regaining a foothold in the national debate can we adequately raise these issues, and constant infighting among the several factions of today’s conservatism only furthers the left’s dominance in shaping public opinion.

Saint Laurent Pre-Fall 2013

By Justin Fenner

Hedi Slimane‘s confident pre-Fall 2013 lookbook for Saint Laurent is filled with largely black-and-white images of Sky Ferreira. What better casting choice for a designer so invested in rock and roll?

As he’s done with his ad campaigns, Slimane shot Ferreira’s largely black-and-white images himself. The offering echoes the glamorous portrayal of ’70s classics from Slimane’s Spring 2013 collection, but with a refined edge. A sheer polka-dot tunic with bishop’s sleeves is paired with a masculine wool overcoat in one image. In another, rounded metal studs and wide armholes give a leather shift presence. Ferreira looks like a rock star in all of the ensembles, but she’s most striking in a black leather motorcycle jacket and sky-high booties.

Slimane's experimentation at Saint Laurent debut

There was an air of the self-searching Seventies student in Hedi Slimane‘s debut menswear show at the rebranded Saint Laurent.

Long, striped thick-knit scarves, oversized jackets and ripped skinny jeans were worn by shaggily coiffed models who stomped grumpily down the catwalk rather than walked. Just like a confused teenager trying to find his identity, in this fall-winter 2013 show Slimane mixed up violently clashing styles. A whiff of sexual experimentation could be detected with the often androgynous models who donned feminine jackets. Sometimes it was hard to tell if the models were male or female.

But least one thing was clear: The wardrobe confusion was intentional.

This was seen most clearly in a look that combined leather motorbike pants in black and white with zippers, yellow tan Cuban heels, a casual oversized check shirt and a truncated red carpet tuxedo. Slimane is definitely trying hard to mark out an original style at the storied house.

Luxurious-looking this show certainly was not, but through pure eccentricity some ensembles ended up working. A printed cape with a black and white abstract patterning and tuxedo lapels came up trumps, albeit surprisingly, alongside a lame red blown-up leopard print top and lumberjack shirt.

Alas, like in Slimane’s womenswear debut, the confusion translated into the silhouettes. Great individual pieces were almost drowned out here because of droopy coats, big flaccid capes and floppy scarves. They flapped about, sometimes blurring the accompanying clothes’ shape.

The styles were also very young, with slim pickings for older men.

Slimane is trying hard to add a unique voice to the fashion conversation. He has succeeded. But is he trying too hard?

Golden Globes 2013: The Very Best Looks From the Red Carpet

By Christina Perez

Last season’s runway rivalry didn’t quite reprise itself on Sunday’s Golden Globes red carpet – but almost. Hedi Slimane‘s new vision for Saint Laurent found a muse in Rosie Huntington-Whiteley; the model-actress (and her Angelina-esque right leg) looked divine in Spring 2013’s gauzy, bow-necked halter gown. Meanwhile, Raf Simons‘s modern Christian Dior was out in full force on not one but two lovely leading ladies. Jennifer Lawrence – who took home the Globe for her work in Silver Linings Playbook – made a strong case for minimalism in the label’s Fall 2012 crimson Couture ballgown, while Marion Cotillard was a vision of modern-day sweetness in a custom asymmetrical strapless shift.

But Slimane and Simons weren’t the only big-name designers who made an impact on the red carpet. Zac Posen was well-represented; not only did the designer dress Naomi Watts in a gorgeous merlot gown from his Pre-Fall 2013 collection, but he also dressed the night’s big winner Lena Dunham in a raisin-hued gown complete with Posen’s signature body-flattering seaming. Oscar de la Renta, too, had a strong showing. Jessica Alba looked dreamy in the designer’s Pre-Fall 2013 sherbet-colored trumpet dress, while Zooey Deschanel glowed in a vivid red strapless number.

Click through to see all those – plus Jessica Chastain‘s seafoam Calvin Klein, Kathryn Bigelow‘s embellished Prada, Sienna Miller‘s pale pink Erdem, and more – right here in our roundup of the very best looks from 2013 Golden Globes night.

Odelay! Beck Now Moonlighting as Model For Saint Laurent

By Justin Fenner

Well, we guess Beck’s doing fine. In addition to releasing his latest project Song Reader – a collection of sheet music – last month, the award-winning 42-year-old musician was also featured in the Spring 2013 campaign for Saint Laurent. Beck sat for the photos, shot and styled by the house’s creative director Hedi Slimane, in Los Angeles last October.

Beck is the second musician Slimane has shot for Saint Laurent‘s campaign since he featured singer Christopher Owens in his very first ads for the house. And like the rest of the images, Saskia de Brauw’s menswear ads included, these are black and white and mostly feature the brand’s suiting – although there’s a pretty fantastic hat involved in three of the photos.
