I Have A Few Questions, Mr. Obama . . .

By Allan Erickson

Obama Little Man Wasnt There SC I have a few questions, Mr. Obama . . .

. . . since the mainstream media won’t ask.

Questions for the President at his next press conference:

Four dead in Benghazi and many seriously injured under suspicious circumstances, a government cover up, witnesses gagged, questions unanswered, investigations derailed.  That’s not a scandal?

Reporters’ records seized, false allegations leveled by DOJ, reporters threatened, reporters and editors prevented from doing their jobs, cover-ups, government intimidation.  That’s not a scandal?

Guns run to drug cartels in Mexico, hundreds killed with them (including our border agents), no following-up to arrest perpetrators (instead ANOTHER cover-up), allegations that American guns cause Mexican violence, border security virtually ignored, government interference with investigations.  That’s not a scandal?

The EPA used as a legislative arm of the executive branch, installing rules that Congress voted down (a clear violation of the Constitution.)  The EPA also used to persecute political opposition.  Not a scandal?

NSA surveillance you authorized seriously suspected of violating citizen rights, and that’s not a scandal?

Recess appointments and an illegal war in Libya, both impeachable offenses.  Not a scandal?

The IRS used to stomp down conservative groups so they cannot educate and influence citizens about Founding principles that contradict your radicalism.  This is clearly an unconstitutional use of power, amounting to illegal political activity.  That is a phony scandal?

ObamaCare, passed illegally and unethically; called a train wreck by the very man who helped write it and get it through Congress; promises to bankrupt the country; a measure designed to redistribute wealth and not provide care; a series of laws and regulations violating privacy, the doctor-patient relationship, and the sovereignty of the states.  That is not a scandal?

Your records, Mr. President.  You’ve released virtually nothing about your life, your education, your term in the Illinois legislature, nothing.  Now a respected country sheriff and his investigators, along with document experts, insist that the birth certificate you released is a forgery.  This means you are hiding something, that it is likely you are not ‘natural born,’ a requirement in the Constitution for becoming President.  And this is not a scandal, Mr. Obama?

What would qualify as a scandal in your view, Mr. Obama?  Oh.  That’s right. You have already answered that question.  It’s scandalous for citizens to own guns, possess private property, keep the fruits of their labor, determine for themselves what kind of schools they prefer, select their own doctor, speak up about matters of conscience, freely exercise their religion, advocate original founding principles, or worse yet, join the Tea Party.

Congress’ Plan To Exterminate Every Last Tea Partier

By Floyd Brown

Congress Congress Plan to Exterminate Every Last Tea Partier

I love the Tea Party members of Congress. They’re courageous, principled, and, at times, innovative in their use of legislative rules to make major statements about policy. It’s too bad they face a wily foe who poses as their friend. You see, the GOP leadership in Congress is committed to Tea Party failure, especially concerning Obamacare.

The latest Tea Party initiative is Senator Mike Lee’s plan to kill the continuing resolution (the bill that funds the government) unless Obamacare is stripped of funding. Lee’s plan is a good one; but sadly, I’m going to predict its failure.

In the end, Republicans who claim to be against Obamacare will scurry like scared children to protect Obamacare’s funding — just as they’ve done at the passage of each continuing resolution since they captured Congress in 2010.

Lee described his plan this way to WBAL Radio:

“I’ll utilize every procedural mechanism at my disposal to do it.” He continued, “I generally don’t signal in advance what procedural maneuvers exactly I’ll use because it’s usually not good strategy. But what I am saying is I will not vote for a continuing resolution that contains funding for further Obamacare implantation and enforcement. So far I have got, I don’t know, 13 or 14 Senate Republicans who have joined me. I think a corresponding effort is starting to be kicked off in the House. And I expect these numbers to grow steadily as Americans realize the president has said he’s not going to implement the law as written. If he’s not going to implement the law, we shouldn’t be forced to fund it.”

The Lee plan is based on sound logic. If Obama won’t follow the law as passed, why should Congress continue to fund his autocratic and capricious manipulation of the program?

The problem Senator Lee and other principled members of Congress don’t seem to grasp is that their plan disrupts the business-as-usual consensus that governs Washington. Their bold plan endangers the power of the established elite and the Republicans who enjoy being part of that elite.

In reality, here’s how the situation will unfold.

Mike Lee will announce the Tea Party plan to great fanfare. Many Republicans in the Senate and in the House will embrace the plan. But the elite in both parties will come together and congeal to protect the status quo. They’ll work to get other conservatives to attack the plan and muddy the waters. They won’t attack the substance of the plan; they’ll  just knock it for being unrealistic or unobtainable.

In fact, a conservative senator -Tom Coburn- has already gotten the ball rolling. He blasted the plan right on cue.

Coburn explained his opposition to the Lee plan to the Washington Examiner: “I’d be leading the charge if I thought this would work. But it will not work.”

And he charged Senator Lee and others of being dishonest: “The worst thing is being dishonest with your base about what you can accomplish, ginning everybody up and then creating disappointment… It’s a terribly dangerous and not successful strategy… You’re …read more

Shutdown Looms Over ObamaCare

By Breaking News

Barack Obama speech 4 SC Shutdown looms over ObamaCare

ObamaCare is at the center of a rapidly escalating fight that threatens to shut the government down this fall. [WATCH VIDEO]

Senate Republicans, including two members of the leadership, are coalescing around a proposal to block any government funding resolution that includes money for the implementation of the 2010 Affordable Care Act.

But such a move is a nonstarter for President Obama and congressional Democrats. Republicans have tried this maneuver in Obama’s first term, only to back off later to the chagrin of Tea Party leaders.

This time, GOP lawmakers are emboldened by problems plaguing the administration’s ObamaCare implementation. But that zeal could put Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) in a tough spot. Both leaders have downplayed previous talk of shuttering the government.

In the House, 64 Republicans have signed onto a letter pressing Boehner not to bring any legislation funding ObamaCare to the floor.

Boehner Stabbed By Modern-Day Brutus

By Floyd G. Brown

Assassination Gaius Julius Caesar 300x225 Boehner Stabbed By Modern Day Brutus

John Boehner is known as the Speaker of the House who easily cries. Now, it seems that he’s got good reason to cry, as he may not hold his job much longer. You see, the Republican caucus is restless.

This past week Boehner was able to muscle a farm subsidies bill through Congress, but only after he agreed to ditch the 40-year linkage to the Food Stamps program that I wrote about in May.

Boehner has a small majority, with only 234 Republicans out of the 435 House members. But the majority is actually smaller than it looks – and it’s fractured. Tea Party Republicans, who make up about 50 members, are disheartened by Boehner’s continued attempts to work hand-in-glove with President Obama. And another 25 members of the Republican caucus are reliably willing to vote with Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats.

Not only that, but John Boehner is also surrounded by Republicans in his leadership team who are waiting in the wings, ready to take his job. One of them is Majority Leader Eric Cantor. Congressman Paul Ryan, Mitt Romney’s running mate, has been quoted by friends as being interested in the top job. With friends like these two, odds makers are beginning to count the days until a rebellion. One member privately told me, “None of us are too impressed with Boehner’s ability to negotiate with the White House. The tax deal at the end of last year left most of us with a bad taste in our mouth and mad constituents to mollify.”

He was, of course, referring to the fiscal cliff deal that forced many Republicans to support massive tax increases. And now these Boehner-pushed tax increases are partially to blame for 2013’s sluggish economy.

We Won’t Get Fooled Again

Boehner’s new farm bill will be opposed by the U.S. Senate because it failed to include additional money for EBT cards and free food for the working poor and disabled, also known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Originally, Boehner included SNAP (otherwise known as food stamps) in his first bill, but it failed to garner enough votes to pass.

Because it cut SNAP by more than $20 billion, most Democrats voted against the legislation. Tea Party-aligned Republicans believed it was still too expensive while the country has a staggering $17 trillion debt.

Additionally, many committee chairmen voted against the original bill, including Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, Financial Services Committee Chairman Jeb Hensarling, Transportation Committee Chairman Bill Shuster, Veterans Affairs Committee Chairman Jeff Miller and Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce.

Faced with his initial failure, Boehner was able to corral more Republican votes by splitting the bill into two bills: one becoming an actual “farm” bill, and the other covering SNAP. Tea Party Republicans consider this an energizing chance to actually cut food stamps by even more than the $20.5 billion spread out over 10 years, as was proposed in the failed farm bill.

Let’s hope this division can withstand the forces of Washington. The two bills …read more

Republicans Could See Divisive Senate Primaries In 2014

By The Huffington Post News Editors

* Cheney’s run renews concerns about party divisions
* In bid to take back Senate, party can afford few missteps
* Tension between party’s establishment, Tea Party movement
By John Whitesides
WASHINGTON, July 18 (Reuters) – Liz Cheney’s decision to challenge Wyoming U.S. Senator Mike Enzi in a Republican primary next year sets up the type of divisive, intraparty fight that Republican leaders vowed to avoid after the 2012 elections.
The move this week by Cheney, daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, is unlikely to open the door for a Democrat to win the Senate seat in Wyoming, which is heavily Republican.
But it is rekindling Republicans’ concerns that party feuds could lead to a reprise of the 2010 and 2012 elections, when bitter Republican primary fights in several states produced weakened, gaffe-prone nominees who went on to lose winnable races to Democrats – and thwart Republicans’ hopes of winning a majority in the Senate.
In next year’s elections, Republicans will need a net gain of six seats to take control of the 100-member Senate. Most analysts expect the party to gain some seats – possibly enough to reclaim a majority – but say it cannot afford the types of missteps it has made in the past two elections.
The fields of candidates are still shaping up, but already there are signs of brewing Senate primary fights among Republicans in several states, including Iowa, Georgia and Alaska.
“The Republican path to success in the Senate is pretty narrow. If they lose one or two seats because of a difficult primary, that’s a huge problem – and it’s possible,” said Jennifer Duffy, a Senate analyst for the nonpartisan Cook Political Report.
“They can’t afford a lot of unforced errors,” she added.
Many Republicans still have painful memories of the last two elections, when contentious primaries produced Senate nominees such as Todd …read more

Documents Detail Implosion At Leading Conservative Christian Political Firm

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Hundreds of pages of email and text message correspondence made public last week shed new light on the infighting and organizational disarray that have plagued America’s leading conservative Christian political consulting firm in recent months.

As BuzzFeed reported in June, the Columbus-based Strategy Group for Media — which has represented dozens of Tea Party and religious right Republicans, including Rand Paul, Ted Cruz, Michele Bachmann, and Newt Gingrich — has been mired in lawsuits and internal tumult since last spring, when seven of the firm’s managers staged a religious intervention with their CEO, Rex Elsass. After the managers made their demands in a dramatic meeting that culminated with them laying hands on their boss and praying for his soul, Elsass fired three of his top lieutenants, including his longtime protege and Strategy Group president Nick Everhart.

It’s The Tea Party, Stupid!

By Anthony ‘AC’ Castellitto

2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA (spy photo)

I have many good friends who I communicate with in person and on the Internet. As the conversation turns to the things that really matter, I always get the same question – ‘What Can We Do?’

Great question! Here’s my view (and I know many who feel the same.)

First of all, we must come to the realization that a majority of our representatives no longer truly represent us. They are looking out for their own best interests and don’t want to rock the boat or make any waves.

Essentially, most of our congressman and senators are merely playing it safe. They have their blinders on and don’t want to take a look at the bigger picture. They are too busy making the rounds in Washington – being all chummy with their colleagues and making backdoor deals.

Look at Congress! They hold the purse strings; you’d think they’d be a bit more scrutinizing. But as we’ve seen time and time again, they are more than content to remain in their blissfully ignorant state until such time that their constituents are forced to light a fire under their butt and point them in the right direction!

Also, its been recently revealed (and this should comes as no surprise) that most of our government officials are blackmailing each other and have been rendered severely impotent. In a time when all types of unethical and illegal government activities are revealed, how is that the proper checks and balances are continuously neglected? We have high ranking officials who should have been forced to step down numerous infractions ago – but still they remain.

Essentially, ‘We the People’ have been thrust into a position of greater responsibility. We are now the watchdogs! We have to keep them (the federal government) honest the best we can and just keep pouring it on!

How we do this?

Continue to keep the flow of information going! Educate the moderates and tactfully plant some seeds in the minds of the liberals. We know liberals may become defensive and irrational, so we may have to carefully pick and choose what info we share – sticking to those stories that directly threaten the majority. The ‘privacy issue’ is one that will continue to resonate with the liberal factions.

Also, we need to regularly contact (via phone or email) our congressman and senators, whether they be Democrat or Republican. Send them links/evidence to support your concerns. Eventually, there may be enough honest representatives in place to make a difference. Ones who are ready to have an impact and shake-up the status quo. We are seeing that with Senator Ted Cruz. Some of his own party have taken a strong disliking of him, and that is a very good sign! We need to force small government Constitutionalists like Ron Paul onto national prominence – they are presidential material!

But more than anything, we have to get behind the Tea Party any way we can! We must support, defend, encourage, and pray for local and state Tea Party groups and …read more

Tea Party Patriots Inc Movement Or Money Machine ?

By Peter J Reilly, Contributor

I know it is generally thought to be annoying to have a telephone solicitation come while you are eating dinner, but I was really pleased when Tiffany called on behalf of Tea Party Patriots, Inc. (I call it Inc. to distinguish it from the overall Tea Party movement).  Inc.  has put out a call for people to show up on the West Lawn of the Capitol on June 19th to Audit The IRS. I listened in on the conference call Thursday night to get people pumped up to come to the rally.  The other goal of the call was to raise $27,000.  At some point we were told that there were still 7,000 people on the call who had not pressed “7” to talk to an operator.

I finally broke down, but there must have been many others because I never got to an operator. That must be why Tiffany called tonight. Better late than never.  If you would like a sense of what the phone call was like you can listen to this.  I think Tiffany was even nicer than Brenda, whom you heard if you listened to that link.  I was probably even a more difficult prospect than Larry, whom you heard, who finally after some polite badgering from Brenda agreed to cough up fifteen bucks.  What I did was ask Tiffany exactly how much of my money would go to Inc., if I made a donation.  She told me that 100% would go to Inc., although she did say that Inc. does have to pay for the call.  I think she was telling the honest truth, based on this contract I found on file with the state of Colorado.  Based on the deal described, Inc.  blew $1.50 or so by calling me and the calling company would only get another fifty cents if I used a credit card.  Of course, the current deal might be different.

Campaign HQ

Tiffany works for Campaign HQ.   I got the sample phone call between Brenda and Larry from their website which describes Campaign HQ’s telephone fundraising service:

With a powerful person-to-person connection, telephone fundraising is proven effective to recruit new donors, renew lapsed donors and turn activists into contributors. A call from one of our Campaign Representatives feels like a real conversation, not a litany of talking points.

Our campaign representatives are passionate about the causes we represent. We believe buy-in, training, and monitoring makes a difference, and the proof is in our results. In fact, we are so proud of the work our campaign representatives do, we welcome you to listen in at any time! For calls to donors of $1000 or more, we have a special Elite Calling Team TISI NaN% comprised of our most experienced, most successful representatives. They speak the language of today’s major donors.

Our all-inclusive, no-nonsense pricing includes all of the services involved in your telephone fundraising campaign from start to finish … including writing your script, making the phone calls, daily progress reports, and fulfillment mail.

“Turning activists into contributors” somehow does not strike me as a primary goal to the Tea Party Movement, but what do I know ?

Back To Form 990

In a previous post I went into quite a bit of detail on Inc.’s Form 990.  Most organizations have their Form 990 up on guidestar.org. Inc. does not.  If you ask them for it, they will send you a copy.  I would like to share two more things about the 990.  The first is how Campaign HQ, Tiffany’s employer, did for them in the year ended May 31, 2012.  During that fiscal year Campaign HQ telemarketing raised $699,656 at a cost of $539,838 netting Inc. $159,818.  That is actually better than some of the other telemarketers MDS Communications raised $1,199,816 and netted Inc. $33,044.  If the telemarketers are working on some sort of flat cost per call rather than a percentage, it does seem that the vast bulk of the money that is given to Inc. over the phone is used to call other people who don’t make donations.

The other thing that I noticed this time through the 990 was a particular expense category.  On Page 10 of the 990 you find Part IX Statement of Functional Expenses.  There are 25 rows showing particular types of expense like compensation of officers and four columns to show the total for each expense type and its breakdown among program service, management and fundraising.  The $17,660,824 total expenses break down $5,903,210 to program – $3,149,975 to management  – $8,607,639 to fundraising.  The really puzzling thing is in the expense categories.  Occupancy at $11,977 seems rather low.  Compensation to officers at $407,687 does not see very high, although in relation to other salaries and wages of $464,208 might be thought a bit high.  The real puzzler is “office expense”, the largest expense, which is $6,932,241.

$6,932,241 In Office Expenses ?

In all my years in public accounting, I cannot remember ever seeing office expenses sticking out like that.  In the brief time, early in my career when I worked for a travel agency more or less as a controller it was kind of a catch-all for stuff like the water cooler.  Every once in a while there would be a sharp question from the owner about what was in there with perhaps a shake of the head.  According to the instructions to Form 990 what belongs there is:

Enter amounts for supplies (office, classroom, or other supplies); telephone (cell phones and landlines) and facsimile; postage (overnight delivery, parcel delivery, trucking, and other delivery expenses) and mailing expenses; shipping materials; equipment rental; bank fees and other similar costs. Also include printing costs of a general nature. Printing costs that relate to conferences or conventions must be reported on line 19.

The Form 990 does provide fewer lines than the typical chart of accounts, so it is understandable that “office expenses” ends up being “a number”, as we say.  Still a small sampling of 990s on guidestar.org did not yield any substantial organization in which “office expenses” made up over a third of its expenses.  I guess it is all those phone calls.

Is This A Problem ?

The usual concern about money in politics is large donations giving the wealthy a disproportionate influence.  With the Tea Party Patriots Inc., we see lots of small donations.  The manner in which those small donations are raised does not have a real grassroots feel to it.  The calls are scripted with a view to impelling what is, in effect, an impulse purchase, which requires establishing a sense of immediate urgency to implement a quick solution to problems that have taken a long time developing.  Brenda and Tiffany are not calling people up and encouraging them to read the Federalist Papers and think about how those principles might help us in our current situation.  That has all been figured out.  You need to send a check so that the organization can continue to pay Brenda and Tiffany to call other people, who unlike you are cheapskates.

I’m really disappointed that I won’t be able to make it to the Audit the IRS rally, but I will let you know the next time Tiffany calls.

We the People

This is a troubled time in American history.

The recent election revealed the changing face and values of the electorate, as well as stark and deep divisions among the people. Citizens everywhere are considering vital questions:

  • Should we reform/abolish the current party system? Is a new political party a viable option? We the People
  • Does the Electoral College still work for America today?
  • Would non-partisan re-districting help create better balance at election time?
  • How should we adjust our policies with regard to immigration and our borders?
  • How can we become fiscally sound and remain within budgetary restraints?
  • As America re-examines the 2nd Amendment, how can we best preserve our gun/militia rights as written and intended by our Founding Fathers? Are we capable of keeping passion and anger from deciding this issue?
  • Should America adopt term limits?
  • Are the words in our founding documents still alive and inspirational? Should we be guided by them still today, or have they become irrelevant?

Many people today fear that our rights are being eroded, and some even say our country is “broken”. Perhaps we, as caretakers of this nation, can heal the break by finding common ground amongst ourselves.
