HUFFPOST HILL – Weinergate 2: The Sextening

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Steve King thinks most young undocumented immigrants haul “75 pounds of marijuana across the desert,” though he might be confusing them with Coachella attendees. Anthony Weiner sexted through 2012, begging the question: What the hell has to happen for someone to finally switch to Snapchat? And if the last two days have taught us anything about media strategy, it’s that Syria’s rebels need to start giving birth to royals and/or snapping photos of their man parts ASAP. This is HUFFPOST HILL for Tuesday, July 23rd, 2013:

HOUSE REPUBLICANS COALESCING AROUND DREAMER REFORMS – Elise Foley: “House Republicans made clear on Tuesday that some are open to allowing Dreamers, the young undocumented immigrants who came to the country as children, to become citizens. Their parents, though, may be left out in the cold. ‘I do not believe that parents who made the decision to illegally enter the U.S. while forcing their children to join them should be afforded the same treatment as these kids,’ Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) said at an immigration subcommittee hearing. ‘Because let’s be clear — parents bringing their young children to the U.S. illegally is not something we want to encourage.’ The hearing comes after Goodlatte and Republican Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) announced they are working on a bill, tentatively named the KIDS Act, to offer Dreamers a path to citizenship. The legislators haven’t yet released any details of their bill, including the cutoff age for Dreamers and what would be required for children to secure citizenship. While the bill is still just a concept, it’s already receiving praise and criticism from both sides — particularly from Democrats who say the piecemeal approach is unfair and calling it a smokescreen for Republicans’ refusal to address the broader undocumented population.” [HuffPost]

John Boehner says no one has worked as hard on immigration reform as he has. Chris Frates asked whether the speaker would continue his “hands off” approach this fall. “Whoa, whoa, whoa. Stop. Let’s get back to the premise of the question. Nobody spent more time trying to fix a broken immigration system than I have,” Boehner said. “I talked about it the day after the election, and I’ve talked about it a hundred times since. And while some may disagree about how we’re going about fixing the broken immigration system, it’s been a big goal of mine.” [National Journal]

Shutdown Looms Over ObamaCare

By Breaking News

Barack Obama speech 4 SC Shutdown looms over ObamaCare

ObamaCare is at the center of a rapidly escalating fight that threatens to shut the government down this fall. [WATCH VIDEO]

Senate Republicans, including two members of the leadership, are coalescing around a proposal to block any government funding resolution that includes money for the implementation of the 2010 Affordable Care Act.

But such a move is a nonstarter for President Obama and congressional Democrats. Republicans have tried this maneuver in Obama’s first term, only to back off later to the chagrin of Tea Party leaders.

This time, GOP lawmakers are emboldened by problems plaguing the administration’s ObamaCare implementation. But that zeal could put Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) in a tough spot. Both leaders have downplayed previous talk of shuttering the government.

In the House, 64 Republicans have signed onto a letter pressing Boehner not to bring any legislation funding ObamaCare to the floor.

Boehner Stabbed By Modern-Day Brutus

By Floyd G. Brown

Assassination Gaius Julius Caesar 300x225 Boehner Stabbed By Modern Day Brutus

John Boehner is known as the Speaker of the House who easily cries. Now, it seems that he’s got good reason to cry, as he may not hold his job much longer. You see, the Republican caucus is restless.

This past week Boehner was able to muscle a farm subsidies bill through Congress, but only after he agreed to ditch the 40-year linkage to the Food Stamps program that I wrote about in May.

Boehner has a small majority, with only 234 Republicans out of the 435 House members. But the majority is actually smaller than it looks – and it’s fractured. Tea Party Republicans, who make up about 50 members, are disheartened by Boehner’s continued attempts to work hand-in-glove with President Obama. And another 25 members of the Republican caucus are reliably willing to vote with Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats.

Not only that, but John Boehner is also surrounded by Republicans in his leadership team who are waiting in the wings, ready to take his job. One of them is Majority Leader Eric Cantor. Congressman Paul Ryan, Mitt Romney’s running mate, has been quoted by friends as being interested in the top job. With friends like these two, odds makers are beginning to count the days until a rebellion. One member privately told me, “None of us are too impressed with Boehner’s ability to negotiate with the White House. The tax deal at the end of last year left most of us with a bad taste in our mouth and mad constituents to mollify.”

He was, of course, referring to the fiscal cliff deal that forced many Republicans to support massive tax increases. And now these Boehner-pushed tax increases are partially to blame for 2013’s sluggish economy.

We Won’t Get Fooled Again

Boehner’s new farm bill will be opposed by the U.S. Senate because it failed to include additional money for EBT cards and free food for the working poor and disabled, also known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Originally, Boehner included SNAP (otherwise known as food stamps) in his first bill, but it failed to garner enough votes to pass.

Because it cut SNAP by more than $20 billion, most Democrats voted against the legislation. Tea Party-aligned Republicans believed it was still too expensive while the country has a staggering $17 trillion debt.

Additionally, many committee chairmen voted against the original bill, including Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, Financial Services Committee Chairman Jeb Hensarling, Transportation Committee Chairman Bill Shuster, Veterans Affairs Committee Chairman Jeff Miller and Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce.

Faced with his initial failure, Boehner was able to corral more Republican votes by splitting the bill into two bills: one becoming an actual “farm” bill, and the other covering SNAP. Tea Party Republicans consider this an energizing chance to actually cut food stamps by even more than the $20.5 billion spread out over 10 years, as was proposed in the failed farm bill.

Let’s hope this division can withstand the forces of Washington. The two bills …read more

John Boehner, Sen. Bob Corker Diverge On Tax Deal With President Obama

By The Huffington Post News Editors

WASHINGTON — Sharp differences emerged on Sunday between House and Senate Republicans over the prospect for a budget deal with President Barack Obama, with House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) insisting that “the talk about raising revenue is over” even as Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) said that the GOP is open to increasing tax receipts by closing loopholes.

“I think there, by the way, is a chance on a deal,” Corker told Fox News’ Chris Wallace. “I think the president is saying the right things. We have an opportunity over the next 4 to 5 months.”

“I think Republicans, if they saw true entitlement reform, would be glad to look at tax reform that generates additional revenue. And it doesn’t mean creeping rates, it means closing loopholes. It also means arranging our tax system so we have economic growth. And I think we have been saying that from day one.”

GOP Tells Anti-abortion Americans To Go To Hell

By Dr. Kevin "Coach" Collins

GOP SC GOP tells anti abortion Americans to go to hell

The Republicans in the House of Representatives have failed us again, but that is nothing new. Cowardice and duplicity are hallmarks of the Republican brand name. What is news is that Boehner and his band of weaklings somehow found the courage to insist upon protecting the American ball-bearing industry while telling pro-lifers to go to hell! Yes, they turned their backs on their promises to protect us from Obamacare and its attacks on religious freedom and slipped a piece of pork into what they passed that protects ball-bearing manufacturers!

On Wednesday the House voted to continue to fund all of Obamacare through the end of September. This means the Republican-controlled body has voted to fund Barack Obama’s war on the Catholic Church and everyone else who finds abortion and contraception morally repugnant.

John Boehner and his idiot sidekick Eric Cantor laughed at the pleas of conservatives who wanted the latest Republican cave to Obama to at least discontinue funding to force faith-based medical facilities to choose between staying open or murdering innocent babies.

The worst thing about this vote was probably the alarmingly small number of Republicans who refused to go along to get along. Just 14 Republicans said “No.” This is scary. It signifies a new resolve to protect themselves at our expense. They are running away from the road to freedom and instead charging headlong along the road to serfdom under Barack Obama. Boehner and Cantor would not even allow a vote to defund Obamacare. What else can be derived from this but that we have been completely abandoned by the entire American government?

Now we can only hope that the Roman Catholic Bishops, who were too timid to mount a genuine fight against Obamacare and those who support it last November, can experience a change of heart and mind. We can also hope that they will finally see the Democrats and Republicans for what they are.

If this vote means little to the Bishops even after having declared the very law the Republicans are helping Obama put into effect to be an “unjust and illegal mandate” as well a violation of the civil rights of individual Americans, where do we go from here?

Freedom Under Attack, Industry Fires Back!

By Avg Joe

guns SC Freedom under attack, Industry Fires Back!

Firearms manufacturers and suppliers are pushing back on the infringement of freedom. This is not a political ploy or a gimmick to increase sales; it is to save them from ultimate demise. They understand that their business depends on buyers, specifically private buyers. They are making the ultimate argument for the Second Amendment: if the people cannot possess the same weaponry as the government, tyranny will ensue. Some have vowed to cease sales to government agencies in states like New York, which just passed extreme restrictions on rifles and magazine capacities.

York Arms announced Thursday that it will cancel orders to any government or law enforcement agency inside New York State. York is located in Buxton Maine and is a manufacture of AR-15 rifle components and suppressors. A host of suppliers and manufacturers posted press releases on their web sites and Facebook pages indicating their new policy of not selling to law enforcement in states, cities, or government jurisdictions that have passed weapons or magazine restrictions, such as New York State.

Grass Roots North Carolina has joined in the fray supporting the manufacturers by posting the email addresses of government and law enforcement sales directors for Smith & Wesson, Glock, and Sig Sauer, encouraging its members to email the three handgun suppliers of the NYPD and ask them to implement similar policies.

The Colorado anti-gun Democrat-controlled House held a voice vote approving legislation to limit magazine capacity to 15 rounds. Town Hall reports that if the legislation passes next week, it could cost the state 600 manufacturing jobs. While some Democrats admit that magazine limitations will do little to stop gun violence, they are moving ahead with an official vote to make a statement. Magpul and Alfred Manufacturing have pledged to relocate if the bill becomes law.

Some of these manufacturers may not be far behind III ARMS’ concept of manufacturing communities in states that are more respectful of citizens’ rights. III Arms announced a few months ago that it was looking to build a walled community in Benewah County, Idaho to eventually house its manufacturing.

Suppliers and manufacturers understand where their bread is being buttered. They will be looking to exit states such as Colorado, California, and New York to name a few. Governments in Idaho, Texas, and Alaska should be sharpening their pencils in order to attract these companies and their jobs.

Washington, DC’s “Grand Bargains” Empty Your Wallet

By Floyd Brown

empty wallet SC Washington, DCs Grand Bargains Empty Your Wallet

Up on Capitol Hill, Congress has developed its own language. A language foreign to most Americans. Some common words have a totally different meaning up here.  If you closely watch the news or subscribe to specialty publications, you may know the definitions of these words. Otherwise, you can listen all day and never really know what is happening.

The language includes words like: mark-up, sequester, rules, third rail, or fiscal cliff.

My goal here at Capitol Hill Daily is to get you beyond the terminology and get you to the significance of any issue for you as an individual.

One of these terms so often used on Capitol Hill is “Grand Bargain.” Speaker of the House John Boehner desperately wanted a Grand Bargain to result from the fiscal cliff crisis. He failed miserably.

A Grand Bargain results when a President, House Majority Leader, and Speaker of the House of different parties come together to solve a major problem through accommodation and bipartisanship. The last Grand Bargain we remember was when Senate Leader Tom Daschle, House Speaker Denny Hastert, and President George W. Bush locked arms and pushed through the Medicare prescription drug benefit.

The media in Washington loves to cover a Grand Bargain. Grand Bargains offer the intrigue of secret negotiations. A Grand Bargain is never done out in the open. This type of inside-Washington horse trading could never happen if people could watch as their ox is being gored.

Now to have a real Grand Bargain, the people can only learn the specifics through coordinated leaks of favorable information; and then legislation, thousands of pages in length, magically appears and passes late that same night. God forbid someone actually read the bill or have full knowledge of what is happening.

Grand Bargains totally avoid the legislative process as it should happen. The regular order of business is straightforward.  A bill is introduced. Hearings are held about the proposal. The bill is debated in committee; then if the bill passes in committee, it is sent to the full Congress for a vote. This process takes months. Grand Bargains happen in hours and days.

Recently, Barack Obama has been pounding his teleprompter in the cause of a Grand Bargain.  His bargain would “avoid sequester,” “raise revenue,” “reform programs,” and “keep the recovery moving ahead.”

This time, roles are reversed; and John Boehner is ignoring Obama’s calls for a Grand Bargain.

Obama is worried about how the sequestering or cutting one trillion dollars from projected spending growth, which is automatic, will affect his favorite constituencies and the weak recovery. Republicans on the other hand are still hurting from the political whipping Obama unleashed on them during the fiscal cliff crisis. While they too don’t like to see the budget growth slowed, their willingness to raise taxes late last year has left them with unhappy constituents and a severe popularity problem. They aren’t about to raise taxes again.

So dreams of any Grand Bargain won’t come true. Instead, expect the automatic cuts to happen. And expect Barack Obama to be mad as a hornet …read more

Press Briefing by Press Secretary Jay Carney, 2/11/2013

By The White House

James S. Brady Press Briefing Room

12:43 P.M. EST

MR. CARNEY: Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to the White House for your daily briefing. I know there’s a call time for the Medal of Honor ceremony, so we’re going to have to keep this quick so everybody who wants to attend, or is scheduled to attend, can do that.

I just wanted to note at the top — and I’ll do this quickly — that you probably saw a blog post by Senior Advisor Dan Pfeiffer over the weekend that makes clear a couple of points, and that is that, first, there is no reason why we should allow the sequester, with its indiscriminate cuts, to take effect. It is wholly false that the President has not put forward proposals that would eliminate the sequester. In fact, he’s done it three times — first, with his proposal to the super committee, which would have eliminated the sequester entirely. That was the whole idea behind the super committee’s work. Second, with his budget. And third, in his proposal to Speaker Boehner, which met Republicans more than halfway on spending cuts and entitlement reforms and revenues late last year.

We call on Congress — as you heard the President do — to allow itself the time and space to work together towards a broader budget agreement that eliminates the sequester entirely and reduces our deficit further by passing a short-term delay in the sequester in a balanced, responsible way — without drama, without delay, without inflicting the kind of unnecessary wound on our economy that we should absolutely not be allowing to happen at this time.

So I would also like to address briefly the fallacious assertions that Republicans have been making about who wants the sequester and who doesn’t. Let’s just be clear: When the Budget Control Act passed on August 11th, 2011, through the House of Representatives, it passed by a vote of 269 to 161. Based on statements by Republicans today, you would have thought that the vast majority of that vote was from Democrats. Well, in fact, 174 of the 269 were Republicans, House Republicans. Only 95 Democrats voted for that bill. And that included every Republican leader — Speaker Boehner, Majority Leader Cantor, Congressman McCarthy, Congressman Ryan. The Speaker of the House, John Boehner, that day told CBS, “I got 98 percent of what I wanted. I’m pretty happy.”

So I’m not sure how that squares with some of the commentary we’ve seen in the last few weeks.

With that, I’ll take your questions. Jim.

Q Thanks, Jay. On that issue, particularly on the short-term solution that buys time and space, some lawmakers are suggesting that Congress could give the President authority to better target some of these cuts in the short term. Would the President be amenable to that? That would be one way to avoid the kind …read more

I’ve had enough of it. It’s time to act.” Krugman disagrees…. …read more

Republicans Are Content To Be The Liberals’ Lackeys And Judas Goats

By Dr. Kevin "Coach" Collins

John Boehner 3 SC Republicans are content to be the liberals’ lackeys and Judas goats

Republicans have become the Democrats’ lackeys and Judas goats, whose main job is to lead unwitting Republican voters into the liberals’ slaughter pens.  Given reports that Eric Cantor wants the Republican rank and file to see that “Government Can Be Good, Too,”  Karl Rove has announced his intention to pick our candidates; and state level Republicans have run away from any hint of changing the Electoral College vote distribution in their states, making it clear that Republicans cannot be trusted with our future.

These people are more concerned with what the New York Times and Debbie Wasserman Schultz has to say about them than the well-being of the suckers that elect them. Elected and celebrated Republicans have become indistinguishable from the nice little old church lady who uses her position as the bookkeeper to steal money from the weekly collections. When we hear these stories, our trust in them is shattered; and we are insulted on many levels. They rub our noses in the stark reality that we now have no one to speak for us. We have no champions of freedom to look to as trusted protectors.

Since we cannot personally sit next to those we send to represent us because we are busy working to support our families, we have to trust people who time and again prove themselves unworthy of our trust. The political integrity of the Republican Party has disintegrated to a point where its talk of  “compromise” with liberals is a question of how much will be taken from us, not IF something will be taken.

Republicans in the House and in state capitals–some who even hold large majorities–have adopted the mentality of a minority because Democrats have mocked and threatened them into cowering in their presence. When Democrats bark at Republicans, telling them they’ll never get the Hispanic vote unless they support erasing the border with Mexico, Republicans in Congress immediately cave and say: “Yes sir boss!”

We are already being told by the Democrat-controlled media that Chris Christie would make a great Republican candidate for president in 2016. Does anyone doubt that we will soon start hearing the same thing from Karl Rove and George Will?

Final thought: Did anyone really expect John Boehner to try to save Allen West?
