Peregrine Semi Charges RF Micro With Additional Patent Infringement Claims

By Rich Duprey, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Adding onto a patent infringement lawsuit filed against RF Micro Devices  in February 2012, Peregrine Semiconductor  announced that it has filed a new lawsuit in U.S. District Court, alleging that the chipmaker also infringed on its patented intellectual property relating to radio frequency integrated circuits, or RFICs, and switching technology. Peregrine seeks damages and to permanently enjoin RFMD from further infringement.

Peregrine claims that some of RF‘s products infringe a newly issued patent relating to silicon-on-insulator, or SOI, technology for RFICs, which significantly improves the linearity and circuit performance of RF SOI devices. Peregrine says the “HaRP” invention is instrumental for RF SOI devices to successfully meet the demanding RF requirements of advanced mobile wireless applications such as 4G LTE.

Peregrine President and CEO Jim Cable said: “Peregrine’s proprietary UltraCMOS process and design technologies are the result of more than 20 years of intensive research and development activity and the investment of approximately two hundred million dollars. Peregrine is committed to a vigorous defense of its intellectual property and continuing advancements in the field.”

Also defendants in the earlier lawsuit are Google‘s Motorola Mobility and HTC, whose smartphones are charged with infringing on the patents. Complaints that were also filed with the U.S. International Trade Commission have since been withdrawn.

Buy, Sell, or Hold: RF Micro Devices

By Selena Maranjian, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

When considering any stock for your portfolio, don’t be swayed by just the positives. Examine its pros and cons and decide whether it’s possible upside outweighs its risks. Let’s take a look at RF Micro Devices today, and see why you might want to buy, sell, or hold it.

Founded in 1991 and based in North Carolina, RF Micro Devices is a semiconductor company specializing in radio frequency (RF) components and technologies. Its offerings enable and support mobile connectivity and communications. The company has a market capitalization of about $1.3 billion, and its stock is up about 4% over the past year and down 3.3%, on average, annually over the past decade.

Buy
The first thing to like about the company is the company it keeps. It’s supplying technology for products that are proliferating rapidly — very rapidly. We’re talking phones and smartphones and tablets, for example.

Not all the numbers in its financial statements are appealing, but some are. Its long-term debt has fallen sharply, from more than $600 million in 2008 to just $119 million recently. It’s not cash-poor either, with its cash and short-term investments coffers recently holding $300 million. Given that it’s been free-cash-flow positive for several years in a row now, that bodes well for its health.

Meanwhile, while many mobile device suppliers have their fortunes very tied to Apple , RF Micro Devices is less tied to it, though it does supply products such as the iPhone 5. Instead, the company is a major supplier for Nokia , which has found success providing less developed economies with less expensive mobile phones. This is broadening RF Micro Devices’ customer base. (Nokia may be in trouble, though, as smarter phones gain traction and its market share in China is shrinking.)

RF Micro Devices’s Wi-Fi business is expected to grow strongly. In its last quarter, it topped analyst expectations and posted a shrinking loss.

Sell
Warren Buffett has long offered a good reason to sell stocks such as RF Micro Devices: He avoids companies that are outside his circle of competence, and companies where he can’t comfortably predict how they’ll be doing in five, 10, or 20 years. He’s confident, for example, that people will still be drinking sodas in a decade, but the fortunes of firms in the fast-changing technology arena are much murkier.

Indeed, while RF Micro Devices’ offerings have often complemented those of Qualcomm , with mobile device makers buying supplies from both, Qualcomm has recently launched a new chipset that manages older and newer wireless standards (such as 4G LTE) and includes front-end signal processing, power management, and radio band tuning. In other words, it may eat RF Micro Devices’ lunch, along with the lunches of several other players, such as Skyworks Solutions . Presto! RF Micro Devices’ future suddenly looks different, or at least less certain, which was why its shares dropped some 15% on the news. An analyst at …read more

Here's What This Top-Earning Billionaire Has Been Buying

By Selena Maranjian, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Every quarter, many money managers have to disclose what they’ve bought and sold, via “13F” filings. Their latest moves can shine a bright light on smart stock picks.

Today let’s look at Moore Capital Management, managed by billionaire Louis Moore Bacon, who’s known for employing a global macroeconomic focus in his investing. He’s been among the top 20 money earners since the 1990s, per GuruFocus.com.

The company’s reportable stock portfolio totaled $3.9 billion in value as of Dec. 31.

Interesting developments
So what does Moore’s latest quarterly 13F filing tell us? Here are a few interesting details,

The biggest new holdings are calls on two ETFs — PowerShares QQQ and Market Vectors Gold Miners. Other new holdings of interest include Sarepta Therapeutics and RF Micro Devices . Sarepta Therapeutics has a lot of people excited about its innovative and promising Duchenne muscular dystrophy drug eteplirsen, which may end up winning accelerated FDA approval. Some wonder whether the company will get bought out, while Wall Street’s interest in the company is growing. Its recent reported loss isn’t as alarming as it seems, either. The company is spending money on boosting its production capacity, too.

RF Micro Devices specializes in radio-frequency (RF) components and semiconductors and has been faring well, as a result of being a component supplier for iDevices. It also supports lower-end phones. Bulls are hopeful about it doing a lot of business in China, where smartphones and upgrades of phones are strong sellers. Some analysts are also expecting a rebound in global semiconductor demand, which bodes well for the company, and smartphones are increasingly employing more RF technology.

Among holdings in which Moore Capital increased its stake was American Capital Agency , which offers investors a huge dividend yield topping 15%. Some worry that the dividend may get reduced (as has happened with some mortgage REITs), but its CEO is bullish enough to have bought more than $500,000 worth of shares recently. In the meantime, the company recently benefited from an increased interest-rate spread higher than some high-profile peers. It has also boosted the proportion of its portfolio that isn’t likely to suffer from borrowers who refinance and prepay mortgages. Be wary, though, as there are some aspects of the company that aren’t too appealing, and it’s quite sensitive to changes in interest rates and inflation. My colleagues have questioned some of management’s moves, too.

Moore Capital reduced its stake in lots of companies, including Melco Crown Entertainment . Melco Crown operates casinos in gaming Mecca Macau, and it has been performing well lately, racking up revenue and earnings gains, and more than doubling its EBITDA margin over the past few years. It’s expanding with properties in the Philippines and elsewhere, too.

Finally, Moore’s biggest closed positions included US Bancorp and the iShares iBoxx High Yield Corporate Bond ETF. Other closed positions of interest include TECO Energy . Holding …read more

Broadcom’s 40nm RF Leads the Industry in Size and Power, According to ABI Research

AUSTIN, Texas–(BUSINESS WIRE)– ABI Research reports that Broadcom has put into production one of the world’s smallest multimode (GSM/GPRS/EDGE/UMTS) transceivers. The sub 7 sq. mm. 40nm RF chip (BCM2193) was revealed just one week after the discovery of the 40nm RF chip announced last week. Broadcom’s chip was discovered second but it may actually have hit production a week or two prior to the Mediatek solution. “It is rare to see two such significant products hit production at virtually the same time,” comments Jim Mielke, ABI Research’s VP of engineering, “but the competition in the low cost smartphone market is driving cost down and speeding cost saving technologies to production.”

To clarify how significant this shift in die area is Mielke explains, “The norm for RF die size has been in the 20 sq. mm. range for years with a few solutions coming in near the mid-teens. Broadcom’s prior solution was a rarity and actually the industry leader in die size at approximately 10 sq. mm. Broadcom’s new die is 35% smaller than the benchmark they set (~10 sq. mm.) and 65-75% smaller than typical solutions.”

The BCM2093 accompanies the BCM21854 dual Arm Cortex A9 core application processor/ 3G modem and the BCM59056 power management unit (PMU). This solution provides a cost effective yet powerful smartphone solution for key markets. Smartphones, which not too long ago were a rarity, are now a very mature market. Broadcom’s focus on using technology to reduce cost and power should propel additional smartphone features into lower cost phones.

The BCM21854BCM2093BCM59056 chipset is just one of the many teardowns ABI Research has in its Teardown Research Service (http://www.abiresearch.com/research/phone-browser/). The complete teardown includes dismantling photos, HD board photos, part list, major component teardowns, die photos, X-rays, a complete set of power measurements, and a block diagram.

ANAHEIM, Calif. & RICHARDSON, Texas–(BUSINESS WIRE)– TriQuint Semiconductor, Inc. (NAS: TQNT) , a leading RF products manufacturer and foundry services provider, has expanded its optical infrastructure portfolio with five new transimpedance amplifiers (TIA), enabling the company to now serve both transmit and receive portions of high performance optical networks. The new product family complements TriQuint’s industry-leading modulator driver portfolio for 10, 40, 100 Gb/s and next-generation 200G/400G systems.

TriQuint’s new TIAs offer performance benefits tailored to key design requirements that support 40G, 100G and emerging optical systems. TriQuint’s new products are part of a recent technology acquisition from Micram Microelectronic GmbH.

“This new amplifier family perfectly complements our optical modulator drivers. We’re sampling next-generation products and receiving positive feedback from numerous customers,” said James L. Klein, TriQuint Vice President and General Manager for Infrastructure and Defense Products. “Our new TIA family serves today’s fastest networks as well as the higher modulation needs of future optical broadband systems.”

The continual worldwide growth in smartphone and tablet data traffic as well as other broadband mobile devices is driving global network capacity expansion. Optical networks remain the most economical means for long-distance, high-speed data transfers across wired and mobile device networks. Infonetics Research commented recently that the global optical market is expected to grow in 2013, with expansion primarily in North America, China, Europe and the Middle East.

“Our conversations with equipment providers continue to trend positive, particularly in North America where 100G spending is about to ramp…Meanwhile, there are positive rumbles in the EMEA region; preliminary results show that 2013 will be a huge year for 100G in China; China is about half of the global 40G WDM market,” said Infonetics Principal Optical Analyst, Andrew Schmitt, in a February 2013 report.

TriQuint’s first TIA release includes five new silicon germanium (SiGe) amplifiers for use in optical networks ranging from very-short-reach to metro- and long-haul. The products are announced in conjunction with the OFC/NFOEC conference and exposition in Anaheim, CA (March 19-21) and complement TriQuint’s wide selection of surface-mount optical modulator drivers.
