Nightclub’s ‘Pee-Analyzer’ Could Stop You From Driving Drunk

A night partying on the town may be all in good fun, that is until it comes time to go home. All too often, late night revelers get behind the wheel of a car after a few too many drinks. But one nightclub is taking an unconventional approach to prevent drunk driving.

The solution: A “pee analyzer.”

Singapore’s Zouk club has outfitted its urinals with detectors that analyze the blood alcohol level of its male patrons when they use the restroom. Club-goers exchange their car keys for computerized RFID cards upon entering the establishment, and if their urine tests above a certain alcohol level, the cards are tagged, prompting a warning to display above the urinal:

Kit Check Raises $10.4 Million To Automate Hospital Pharmacy Process

Kit Check, a one-year-old digital health start-up, raised $10.4 million in a series A round. Life science venture firm New Leaf Venture Partners led the investment, with participation from Sands Capital Ventures, Easton Capital Investment Group, and LionBird. Kit Check is a graduate of Rock Health, a San Francisco-based accelerator. Co-founder Kevin MacDonald is bringing expertise he acquired at Sun Microsystems and other start-ups to apply in hospital settings an old technology used to track inventory in several industries, including health care. By way of radio waves, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) identifies objects that are electronically tagged. General Electric, for example, recently announced it is using RFID to make sure hospital personnel wash their hands. Motorola tracks hospital equipment. Kit Check is applying the technology to automate the tedious process of making sure hospitals’ medication kits are up to date—one of the Joint Commission’s most common citations for non-compliance. On average, 20% of kits contain drugs that have expired. By chance, MacDonald came upon that glaringly inefficient process over dinner with a friend, a hospital pharmacist. She complained about the mind-numbing task of manually sifting through medication kits to look for drugs past their expiration date—something a barcode doesn’t provide. Hospitals typically keep between 20 and 50 kits for emergencies such as cardiac arrest, or anesthesia, and each kit contains between 20 and 200 medications for those specific situations. DAYTON, Ohio–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Standard Register (NYS: SR) has announced plans for a new national Center of Excellence for digital printing, kitting and distribution in Jeffersonville, Ind., which is in the greater Louisville, Ky. metropolitan area. This new 335,000 square foot center will provide Standard Register customers more flexible delivery options and improved speed-to-market for communications products, services and solutions.

The Indiana Economic Development Corporation offered Standard Register EDGE (Economic Development for a Growing Economy) tax credits and a training grant from the Skills Enhancement Fund in support of the project along with enterprise zone investment deductions from the River Ridge Development Authority.

“Standard Register‘s $10 million investment in this new Center of Excellence allows us to operate more efficiently, advance our digital printing capabilities and leverage the deep capability of the local workforce to better serve our customers,” said Joseph P. The new Center of Excellence, which is expected to be operational early in the third quarter of 2013, will leverage industry-leading technologies for advanced color management, planning and scheduling, and workflow management. The center will also offer distribution and kitting services similar to other Standard Register facilities including secure storage areas, order fulfillment, track and trace, and kitting, while also utilizing RF scanning, bar-coding, and RFID technology. The center’s proximity will provide easy access to United Parcel Service’s (UPS) Worldport, the world’s largest fully automated package handling facility. The combination of capabilities, technology, processes and location will allow Standard Register to meet customers’ current and evolving business requirements.

To take full advantage of the enhanced capabilities and support customer requirements, some operations from existing Standard Register facilities will be transferred to the new center. Report Analyzing Global Retail Crime Available via Free Download From Checkpoint Systems

LONDON & THOROFARE, N.J.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– A new report that analyzes global retail crime and loss prevention (LP) trends since 2001 has found, among various areas researched, that the number of retail thieves apprehended annually continues to be about six million, and this is just the very tip of the iceberg. More than 78% of shrink is due to shoplifting by dishonest customers or retail employees. New products in fast-paced categories such as electronics, perfumes and sportswear being brought to market every year at premium prices are among the most likely to be stolen. Fresh meat remains a high-theft category for supermarkets and hypermarkets.

Retailers have, however, taken action in recent years. Of the 50 most stolen products, the number of items protected from theft has increased from 60% in 2007 to 75% in 2011 with EAS (Electronic Article Surveillance) source tagging and special high-theft solutions implemented by more retailers each year.

More than 86% of the LP professionals surveyed saw inventory management and/or loss prevention as primary drivers to implement RFID (Radio Frequency identification).

The report also points out that the role of LP departments is evolving to increasingly provide a strategic service to the other areas of the business. Online retailing and new payment systems such as smart-phones bring new risks to the industry, meaning that LP professionals would benefit from working closely with IT, store operations and marketing in the fight against crime. The report notes that this collaboration draws on joint methods for analyzing shrink while data obtained from electronic surveillance and RFID solutions is often used to make improvements in marketing, operations and logistics.

While the report points out the clear correlation between loss prevention spending and lower shrink, the length and depth of the global recession has resulted in increased rates of shrink since 2007. Later this year, Disney is planning to introduce RFID-enabled “MagicBands” at its amusement parks, onto which visitors can upload their personal information, including credit card details, in order to navigate the parks as easily as Peter Pan does the Land of Lost Boys. App Spotlight: Receipt scanner Piikki is free, today only

Receipts are the bane of my existence. I’m constantly misplacing ones I need to file for expense and travel reports. Isn’t this the 21st century? Why do we need to save bits of paper anyway?

In the future, I’m sure all business expenditures will automagically find their way into the proper reports, probably through some mashup of RFID, Bluetooth, and Excel 2063. In the meantime, there’s Piikki for iOS, which converts snapshots of your receipts into expense reports.

The app normally sells for $1.99, but today only, you can score it free of charge.

Needless to say, apps like this have been around for years (and not just for iOS—there are plenty of options for Android users as well). So what separates Piikki from the competition, apart from its silly name?

Radio frequency ID chip case ruling favors Texas school district

Tracking teenagers at school with high-tech chips has come to a head in Texas.

Northside Independent School District

A federal judge there last week ruled against a teenager who had been suspended from high school for refusing to wear a radio frequency ID chip around her neck.

The case highlighted the intersection of technology and issues of religious and personal freedom as well as the right to privacy.

Last fall, as part of a trial that could someday include 112 schools and nearly 100,000 students, Northside Independent School District in San Antonio issued students at two of its campuses new badges with an embedded RFID chip in order to track their locations.

Court Rejecting Texas Student's Opposition To RFID Tracker Not As Outrageous As It Seems

By Kashmir Hill, Forbes Staff The privacy community is up in arms this week about Texas student Andrea Hernandez “losing” a lawsuit which challenges her school district’s RFID-enabled “student locator” program. She objected to John Jay School requiring students to wear ID badges with an RFID chip that allows them to be tracked at all times. It sounds like the legal thriller sequel to Cory Doctorow’s Little Brother at first glance, but it’s not.
