Abilis Systems and MaxLinear Introduce a Reference Platform for Satellite Home Gateways That Distributes up to Eight Satellite TV Channels to IP-Connected Devices

LUXEMBOURG–(BUSINESS WIRE)– SES Industry Days Conference – Abilis Systems and MaxLinear (NYS: MXL) , leaders in low-power IC design for digital TV applications, today announced the world’s first eight-channel satellite headless gateway reference platform.

This “headless gateway” platform addresses the ever-increasing demand for viewing of high-quality content on multiple screens. This platform is not directly connected to a TV, like a set-top box, but is network connected and accessible by multiple screens in a home. Acting as a media server, these headless gateway platforms are optimized for SAT>IP and DLNA services.

The gateway reference platform converts satellite TV content into IP packets for streaming in home, thus enabling users to enjoy the benefit of watching today’s DTH services on televisions as well as on IP-enabled devices such as tablets, laptops, smartphones, game consoles and other platforms.

The gateway platform has four RF inputs to be used with existing satellite dishes and low-noise block (LNB) downconverters. It combines the high throughput of the Abilis TB101 network processor with the MxL584 receiver to realize unprecedented low-power consumption and a very low bill-of-materials (BOM). This new platform offers satellite operators a cost, performance, and size-optimized solution to expand their TV offering to tablets and smartphones.

The reference platform is very small and can be designed with multiple applications in mind, for example with a single LNB (using DiSEqC) up to four LNBs. The small design is enabled by MaxLinear’s highly integrated MxL584 Full-Spectrum Capture™ (FSC™) DVB-S/S2 receiver.

The four-input MxL584 receiver integrates tuners required for multi-inputs, eight demodulators, and all the active front-end components, including the low-noise amplifiers (LNA) into a compact and cost-effective 10×10 QFN package.

The TB101 integrates a high-throughput demux supporting up to 800Mbps in eight independent TV streams, a CAS to DRM crypto engine and a Gigabit Ethernet. The chip transforms eight HD TV channels into IP format consuming less than 500mW, using only few DMIPS per channel.

“We’re very pleased to team up with MaxLinear to design the next generation of eight-channel satellite gateway platforms. With this unique co-developed cost effective platform, we’re enabling operators to differentiate their offering with easy to deploy solutions for distribution of secured and FTA content

Email rules loosened for Mormon missionaries

The Mormon church’s strict rules about email communication for missionaries have been loosened a bit to allow them to send emails to friends, priesthood leaders and new converts.

Previously, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints missionaries could only email immediate family members, though they’ve always been allowed to send written letters to friends and others.

LDS spokesman Eric Hawkins said Wednesday that missionaries must get permission from their mission president before sending emails to converts or people of the opposite gender, under the new rules.

And they are still restricted to sending emails through the church’s filtered email service and on the designated preparation day each week. Emails also must be sent from public computers at somewhere like a library where a fellow missionary can see the screen.

The missionary handbook shows that the rules stem from the expectation that missionaries are to devote all their time and attention to “serving the Lord, leaving behind all other personal affairs.”

The handbook also advises missionaries to never include anything confidential, sensitive or negative about the area where they are serving.

Missions are considered rites of passage for many Mormons, broadening their perspective on the world, strengthening their faith and helping prepare some of them for future leadership roles within the church.

Young Mormon men are expected, but not required, to serve missions while women have faced far less pressure to serve. Men serve two years while women go for 18 months.

In October, the church lowered the minimum age for missionaries: from 21 to 19 for women and from 19 to 18 for men.

The church said applications for new missions are up twofold since the announcement and more than 65,000 Mormon missionaries are serving around the world. About half of all new applications to go on missions have been from women, the church said. Previously, 15 percent of missionaries were women.

More than 20,000 additional missionaries have been called to serve, while another 6,000 are in the interview process.

IXYS Introduces a New Megapower 83mm Phase Control Thyristors with Rating of 2.2kV

BIEL, Switzerland–(BUSINESS WIRE)– IXYS Corporation (NAS: IXYS) an international power and IC semiconductor company, today announced that its wholly owned UK subsidiary, IXYS UK Westcode Ltd., launched a new addition to its 83mm die phase control thyristors product group.

The thyristors, rated at 2200 volt, are the latest introduction to this new product group that uses an integrated die construction and improved package design for better electromechanical and thermal performances. The 2.2kV thyristor has an average current rating (Case temperature 55C) of 4340 amperes, with a junction to heat sink thermal resistance of 0.008 kelvins per watt. The new thyristor is constructed using an all diffused silicon wafer slice fused to a metal header and encapsulated in a fully hermetic package. This construction enhances the performance and provides excellent transient thermal and surge current ratings.

“This new addition to the product group offers exceptional current rating for this voltage class and package size, thereby maximising the power to package ratio. Older ‘alloy free’ technology is very limited in its application at lower voltage classes. This new introduction takes advantage of better silicon wafer technology and therefore reduced forward voltage drop to achieve the higher current rating and therefore higher power rating. Maximising performance through improved technology is core to IXYS‘ strategy to produce the most power efficient devices,” commented Frank Wakeman, IXYS UK‘s Marketing & Technical Support Manager.

The device is available in two industry standard capsule heights and two different voltage grades. Designations are: one inch thick package N4340TJ220 (2200 Volts), N4340TJ180 (1800 Volts); one and a half inch thick package N4340TE220 (2200 Volts), N4340TE180 (1800 Volts). Additional products with voltage ratings up to 6500 volts will be launched through 2013.

Typical applications for these devices include industrial drives, wind power converters, soft starters, excitation, utilities and controlled rectifiers.

IXYS Introduces the Smallest Footprint Surface Mount Package for 1.2KV to 1.8KV Power Semiconductors

IXYS Introduces the Smallest Footprint Surface Mount Package for 1.2KV to 1.8KV Power Semiconductors

BIEL, Switzerland–(BUSINESS WIRE)– IXYS Corporation (NAS: IXYS) , a leader in power semiconductors and IC technologies for energy efficient products used in power conversion and motor control applications, announced today the D2-Pak (TO-263) and D3-Pak (TO-268) packages with higher ‘creepage’ spacing which enables higher voltage power semiconductors to be used in these Surface Mount Devices (SMD).

“The market demands smaller footprint solutions for 1.2KV to 1.8KV power semiconductors. The main reason for this is the higher power demands which are realized by higher voltages instead of higher current. By using a higher voltage the conduction losses in copper wires are less for power control circuits; therefore, thinner copper conductors or traces on PCB circuits can be used. These SMDs improve energy efficiency, reduce cost, reduce size and reduce weight when used in power electronics,” commented Mr. Jeroen van Zeeland, head of marketing at IXYS Germany.

SMDs are preferred for lower cost alternatives to modules and to other bulkier discrete components in integrated power designs. Until now there was no such solution for applications higher than 1.2KV. The new IXYS D2-Pak and D3-Pak designs now offer the standard footprint, but with compliance to the high voltage ‘creepage’ specifications.

For D3-Pak the creepage distance between the terminal to the copper of the backside is greater than or equal to 5.80 mm. The same value for the D2-Pak is greater than or equal to 4.70 mm. This enables the use of 1.2KV D3-Pak in pollution degree 2 industrial designs. In addition to industrial power control applications, these devices target other 1.2KV to 1.8KV power supply, UPS, renewable energy, motor drives and medical applications.

The following products are already available:

LONG BEACH, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– ON Semiconductor (Nasdaq: ONNN), driving innovation in energy efficiency, will showcase its latest power efficient product advances at APEC 2013, March 17-21, 2013, in Long Beach, California. The new devices are designed for boosting performance and simplifying the design of offline power supplies, AC lighting infrastructure and motor control systems.

Targeted for high efficiency, compact, switch-mode power supplies for power adaptors, the NCP1937is a quasi-resonant (QR) flyback controller device with power factor correction (PFC). This is the first AC-DC device utilizing a hybrid digital core architecture enabling higher efficiency, increased flexibility and easier system design implementation. The device incorporates all the features necessary for building a robust and compact PFC stage in combination with a QR flyback stage, while minimizing the number of external components. The quasi-resonant current-mode flyback stage features a proprietary valley-lockout circuitry, ensuring stable valley switching. It has wide voltage range spanning 9 volts (V) to 30 V, plus built-in over-voltage protection, and a skip mode operation which enables higher efficiency in light load conditions. The NCP1937 will be demonstrated in an 85 watt (W) Notebook Adapter showcasing the industry’s leading <10 milliWatt (mW) no load standby power.
