CARLSBAD, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– MaxLinear Inc. (NYS: MXL) , a leading provider of integrated radio frequency (RF) and mixed-signal integrated circuits for broadband communications applications, today announced that leading OEMs have selected its MxL683 silicon tuner-demodulator device for new, hybrid satellite + terrestrial set-top boxes (STB) for the Latin America pay TV market.

Pay TV operators in Latin America are increasingly adding ISDB-T 13-segment broadcast receivers into existing satellite STB platforms to capture the growing number of high quality, high definition television (HDTV) channels that are broadcast free-to-air in many cities.

The infrastructure and licensing costs associated with combining and re-transmitting these channels over the existing satellite network can be prohibitively expensive. By integrating the ISDB-T receiver in the STB, satellite operators can free up valuable satellite bandwidth for additional pay TV channels and still offer packages with the “must have” local HD content.

MBP and MQA 2013 feature major enhancements designed to enable device modeling engineers to deliver higher-quality models to their customers. Chief among them are a fully integrated data flow across Agilent’s device modeling platform and the ability to establish and enforce standard operating procedures for modeling in team environments.

New Devices Deliver Twice the Amps-Per-Dollar

DURHAM, N.C.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Cree, Inc. (NAS: CREE) announces the release of its second generation SiC MOSFET enabling systems to have higher efficiency and smaller size at cost parity with silicon-based solutions. These new 1200V MOSFETs deliver industry-leading power density and switching efficiency at half the cost per amp of Cree’s previous generation MOSFETs. At this price-performance point, they enable lower system costs for OEMs and provide additional savings to the end-user through increased efficiency and lower installation costs due to the lower size and weight of SiC-based systems.

“We have evaluated Cree’s second generation SiC MOSFET in our advanced solar circuits,” stated Prof. Dr. Bruno Burger, renowned industry expert at the Fraunhofer-Institute in Freiburg, Germany. “They have state-of-the-art efficiency and enable system operation at higher switching frequencies that result in smaller passive components, especially smaller inductors. The superior performance of these new SiC MOSFETs enables the reduction of required current rating by 50-70 percent in some high power applications. For solar inverters and uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems, the efficiency improvement is accompanied by size and weight reductions. In motor drive applications the power density can be more than doubled while increasing efficiency and providing up to twice the maximum torque of similarly rated silicon solutions. The product offering range has been extended to include a much larger 25 mOhm die aimed at the higher power module market for power levels above 30 kW. The 80 mOhm device is intended as a lower cost, higher performance upgrade to the first generation MOSFET.

3 Stocks to Get on Your Watchlist

I follow quite a lot of companies, so the usefulness of a watchlist to me cannot be overstated. Without my watchlist, I’d be unable to keep up on my favorite sectors and see what’s really moving the market. Even worse, I’d be lost when the time came to choose which stock I’m buying or shorting next.

Today is Watchlist Wednesday, so I’m discussing three companies that have crossed my radar in the past week — and at what point I may consider taking action on these calls with my own money. Keep in mind that these aren’t concrete buy or sell recommendations, nor do I guarantee I’ll take action on the companies being discussed. What I can promise is that you can follow my real-life transactions through my profile and that I, like everyone else here at The Motley Fool, will continue to hold the integrity of our disclosure policy in the highest regard.

Skyworks Solutions
I freely admit to pounding the table on Skyworks Solutions every couple of months. But, given its dominance in power-amplifying modules and RF components in mobile devices, I don’t see how this company isn’t a staple on everyone’s watchlist.

Last month the RF supplier market (of which Skyworks is also a member) received quite the scare when Qualcomm unveiled its next-generation all-in-one RF360, which is capable of dealing with band fragmentation on the front-end and would make the current RF components mostly dead weight. This is terrible news for weaker-positioned RF suppliers like RF Micro Devices, which have been scrambling to produce 4G LTE-capable components. RF Micro, for instance, has been reducing its reliance on Nokia, but still counts quite a bit of revenue from 2G and 3G RF sales to the company. 

Skyworks, on the other hand, has a tight-knit relationship with Apple and that isn’t likely to change anytime soon. Skyworks’ most recent quarter — which saw it report revenue of $454 million, up 15% from the year-ago period, and EPS of $0.55 — handily surpassed analysts’ expectations. As icing on the cake, Skyworks ended the quarter with nearly $2 in cash and no debt. With ample R&D funds on hand and a bare-bones forward P/E of just 8, I feel Skyworks could be primed for a big move this year.

Endeavour Silver
Since making Endeavour a stock near a 52-week low worth buying in late January, it’s done nothing but make me look foolish and head lower. Endeavour’s problems are pretty simple to understand, with lower production at its newly purchased El Cubo mine and lower spot silver prices holding back its bottom-line profits. However, my opinion is that’s about to change in a big way.

PHOENIX–(BUSINESS WIRE)– ON Semiconductor (Nasdaq: ONNN), driving energy efficient innovations, has introduced a new family of Tunable RF Components (TRFC) that address the design challenges faced by engineers developing the latest generation smartphones. The new devices optimally combine tuning range, RF quality factor (Q) and frequency operation, providing a superior solution to existing fixed approaches.

End-user demand for smaller, thinner handsets challenges designers to reduce antenna volume without impacting performance. At the same time, the rapid increase in demand for mobile data means that carriers worldwide are increasing the number of bands that a smartphone must cover. ON Semiconductor’s new TCP-30xx family of low insertion loss Passive Tunable Integrated Circuits (PTICs) and TCC-103 PTIC Controller IC allow performance to be tuned and optimized to counter lower antenna volume and increased frequency coverage requirements. The TCC-103 is a high-voltage digital-to-analog IC that provides control and bias in a tunable solution and is fully compliant with the timing needs of cellular and other wireless system requirements. Banks Hopeful for Dividend Hikes and Stocks Buybacks

In the coming weeks, the financial sector may move from worrying about the spending sequestration to the coming stress tests of the 19 major banks in the United States. We recently covered the Seven Safest Banks in America for 2013 and that list may get to be expanded handily in 2014 after the result of the stress tests.

At issue is that the banks are expected to pass these tests. If so, there is going to be one serious advantage that has not been there in years. That will come from returning capital to the shareholders. Companies like Bank of America Corp. (NYSE: BAC) and Citigroup Inc. (NYSE: C) have such low dividend yields that they might as well not be counted as dividend payers at all. Some of the banks likely will be freed up to begin returning capital via higher dividends and common stock buybacks.

Bank of America Corp. (NYSE: BAC) has a yield of only 0.36% and Citigroup Inc. (NYSE: C) yields only 0.1%. Our take is that Bank of America may get to increase its payout before Citigroup, but that may be solely due to management remaining the same. There are still many pending legal cases against Bank of America from borrowers and from various government agencies and trading partners. If these banks are not allowed to lift their dividends this year, then we almost certainly would expect that to take place in 2014.

Here are some other banks that may have a shot at dividend hikes or resuming some share repurchase programs:

  • Regions Financial Corp. (NYSE: RF) has a $10.8 billion market cap and only a 0.52% dividend yield. Regions cut the payout from $0.38 to $0.10 in 2008, and then in 2009 it cut that payout from $0.10 all the way down to only $0.01 per share per quarter.
  • SunTrust Banks Inc. (NYSE: STI) has a $14.7 billion market cap and only a 0.72% dividend yield. This bank raised its payout to $0.05 per share quarter from $0.01 in mid-2011, but that has been static ever since at the one-penny level.
  • Zions Bancorp. (NASDAQ: ZION) has a $4.4 billion market cap and only a 0.17% dividend yield. This dividend fell from $0.43 to $0.32 per share per quarter very briefly in 2008 and then down to $0.04 for two quarters before the dividend fell down to $0.01 per share quarter, where it has been since mid-2009.

The good news is that most banks are expected to pass the stress tests. The bad news is that merely passing a stress test does not come with assurances that the Federal Reserve will allow these banks to automatically hike dividends and begin repurchasing common stock.

New 2-D optical phased array technology to enable advanced LADAR, other defense applications

Most people are familiar with the concept of RADAR. Radio frequency (RF) waves travel through the atmosphere, reflect off of a target, and return to the RADAR system to be processed. The amount of time it takes to return correlates to the object’s distance. In recent decades, this technology has been revolutionized by electronically scanned (phased) arrays (ESAs), which transmit the RF waves in a particular direction without mechanical movement. Each emitter varies its phase and amplitude to form a RADAR beam in a particular direction through constructive and destructive interference with other emitters.
