What Is The Thinking Behind Microsoft's 3D Printed Future?

By Rakesh Sharma, Contributor

In further proof that consumer 3D printers are approaching mainstream acceptance, Microsoft recently announced native support for 3D printers. This means that users will be able to 3D print objects in a similar fashion to paper-based printing. To print a 3D object, all you would need to do is hit the Print button on your Windows machine. Windows 8.1 ships with native 3D printing support (or, drivers) for nine 3D printers. This list includes established players such as MakerBot to startups such as Formlabs. While you can read the detailed interview below, there were two key points that Shanen Boettcher, Microsoft veteran and General Manager with the company’s Startup Business Group,  emphasized during his conversation with me. …read more

GE Healthcare and HCA Collaborate to Tackle Hand Hygiene

HCA’s Summerville Medical Center uses real-time data and analytics to track hand hygiene compliance

SUMMERVILLE, S.C.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– GE Healthcare and HCA’s Summerville Medical Center have collaborated to develop and deploy a data driven technology solution that tracks hand washing data as it relates to patient care through the use of small sensor tags. The new GE Healthcare AgileTrac RTLS (Real-Time Location System) solution provides a more complete picture of clinicians’ hand-washing behaviors than traditional manual programs, which by nature aren’t able to capture as many data points on a daily basis. The automated system collects up to 5,000 data points a day vs. 700 per year with manual observation.

“The ultimate goal of any hospital is to provide the best level of care to patients,” said Louis Caputo, CEO, Summerville Medical Center. “Our innovative culture prompted us to expand our current relationship with GE and tackle hospital acquired infections through the tracking of hand hygiene compliance. The greatest value of this technology has proven to be the data – the fact you can look at individual workflows and departments and make changes accordingly. It’s a constant reminder to put the patient first.”

By expanding GE Healthcare’s AgileTrac RTLS reach with sensor tags, Summerville Medical Center was able to create a detailed record of each patient’s experience by accurately recording, measuring and reporting hand washing—all without affecting the existing workflow. Each caregiver wears a badge that counts room entries and exits as well as the use of soap or sanitizer dispensers. The data collected from the system is used to model and characterize clinician-patient interactions, providing detailed data to help monitor and modify behavior.

The technology was first rolled out in the Summerville Medical Center ICU in the spring of 2012 and then expanded to its medical surgery units and the ER.

“There is no better way for GE to meet its customers’ demands for efficiency and productivity than to provide technology and solutions that can help predict and prevent problems and get the right information to the right people at the right time,” said Fran Dirksmeier, General Manager, Global Asset Management, GE Healthcare. “Our collaboration with Summerville has been invaluable as we look to tackle one of healthcare’s toughest challenges in a data driven way.”

More Than Half of Surveyed Mobile Users Manage Personal Finances on Their Connected Devices, According to Research from IAB, InMobi & Viggle

Educating Users About Device and Network Security Would Help Drive More Adoption

NEW YORK–(BUSINESS WIRE)– With tax day fast approaching, the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) today released “Mobile and Money,” a new study conducted in partnership with InMobi and Viggle, that looks at how mobile users are leveraging smartphones and tablets to manage their personal finances. Findings show that a great number of consumers are tapping into their mobile devices for money management, although some are worried about security issues – real or imagined – that financial services marketers need to better address.

According to the report, nearly two out of three respondents (58%) regularly use their bank’s mobile app, while another 25 percent are aware of the app, but have yet to use it. In addition, 50 percent use their bank’s mobile-optimized web site, while another 26 percent are aware of the feature, but have yet to test it.

These numbers indicate that the financial marketers’ messages about mobile offerings are resonating with consumers. However, at the same time more than half (52%) of the survey’s respondents said that in order to shift more personal finance activities to their mobile device, they need a concrete “guarantee” that financial transactions are safe, even if they lose their phone. In addition, 46 percent stated that they needed to see better security on their mobile network in order to inspire them to turn to their connected device for more financial activities.

“Clearly, mobile users are leaning into their devices for personal finance assistance wherever and whenever they happen to have a need,” said Anna Bager, Vice President and General Manager, Mobile Marketing Center of Excellence, IAB. “Most financial apps already contain rock-solid security, but consumers seem not to be as plugged into that fact, and that knowledge gap can make all the difference in driving further usage and adoption. This is an area that financial services marketers should pay attention to in their future campaigns.”

The report found that respondents are starting to treat their smartphones as virtual wallets, using the device for a variety of payment activities, such as:

GE Energy Storage Announces First European Sale of DMS-Integrated Energy Storage Systems

Advanced energy storage technology to increase capacity and lower costs over time

SCHENECTADY, N.Y.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– GE’s [NYSE: GE] Energy Storage business announced today the first European sale of its Durathon* energy storage system. Western Power Distribution (WPD), a major distribution network operator in the U.K, will install five Durathon 100 kilowatt-hour energy storage systems during Q3 2013 as part of “Project FALCON” (Flexible Approaches to Low Carbon Optimized Networks), a four year project led by WPD.

The project is partially funded through the U.K. Office of Gas and Electricity Markets’ (Ofgem’s) Low Carbon Network Fund and aims to develop a new computer-based modeling tool to identify the best way of delivering investment on the network. The system will be able to identify the most cost effective ‘smart’ or ‘conventional’ way of delivering additional network capacity to facilitate the UK Low Carbon Transition Plan. One of the ‘smart’ methods being trialed is Energy Storage.

“We selected the Durathon energy storage system because it provides the performance and functionality we need while being small enough to fit into our network’s substations,” said Ben Godfrey, Innovation and Low Carbon Networks Engineer with WPD. “The real-time performance data collected during the trial will help us manage our network more efficiently, which, in the long run, should minimise costs for customers.”

The project will be the first time that GE Energy Storage has integrated its Durathon energy storage system with a distribution management system (DMS) in the European market. WPD plans to install 100 kilowatt-hour systems at five of its high voltage substations in Milton Keynes, located 45 miles northwest of London.

“This trial will demonstrate the impact that the Durathon energy storage system can have in a real-world, utility distribution network,” said Prescott Logan, General Manager of GE Energy Storage. “It is designed to provide vital data that can be used to enhance utility services and reduce operating expenses — a savings that could ultimately be passed on to customers.”

During the trial, WPD plans to use the Durathon systems to enhance network efficiency through voltage support, improved power quality and electrical noise reduction. The energy storage systems also are expected to help WPD defer expensive network upgrades.

Illumina Launches TruSight™ Tumor Content Set

Enables Somatic Variant Detection in Solid Tumors Using Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS)

SAN DIEGO–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Illumina, Inc. (NAS: ILMN) today announced the next product in its TruSight line of content sets, TruSight Tumor, for NGS-based somatic variant detection in solid tumors. TruSight Tumor provides optimized amplicon-based library preparation of 26 oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes selected for their involvement in common solid tumors, including lung, colon, melanoma, gastric, and ovarian cancer.

TruSight Tumor also offers a comprehensive NGS-based tumor profiling solution that provides a broader and more cost-effective view of tumor heterogeneity compared to genotyping-based methods. Researchers can simultaneously detect somatic changes in multiple genes across the tumor genome, as referenced in industry guidelines, as well as emerging biomarkers implicated in pharmaceutical clinical trials. Designed for use with formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) samples, TruSight Tumor enables high levels of sensitivity for minor allele detection (below 5%), with limited DNA input requirements.

“TruSight Tumor is designed to run on Illumina’s industry-leading sequencing platforms and enables clinical researchers to understand the molecular heterogeneity of FFPE tumor samples,” said Matt Posard, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Illumina’s Translational and Consumer Genomics business. “This technology has the potential to expand candidates for targeted therapies who may otherwise be missed with single variant or single gene approaches.”

“Tumor characterization using next-generation sequencing enables clinical research laboratories to gain a deeper understanding of underlying biology. In order to detect clinically relevant variants, it is important to look beyond single genes or hotspot mutations while achieving very low levels of sensitivity,” said Dr. Robert Daber, Technical Director of Clinical Genomics, Center for Personalized Diagnostics, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania.

TruSight Tumor is the first content set designed for somatic variant detection on the Illumina MiSeq® platform. As a portfolio, TruSight content sets are designed for high performance targeted sequencing to meet the specific needs of the clinical research laboratory by providing high analytical sensitivity and specificity. They offer exceptional performance in the capture and sequencing of targeted genomic regions, and are selected through collaborations with experts from leading institutions.

TruSight content sets are for research use only and not intended for diagnostic use. TruSight Tumor is now available for order with shipment expected in Q2’13. For more information, visit www.illumina.com/TruSightTumor.
