Windows 8.1 Enterprise Preview Reflects the Growing Trend of Working Remotely

Microsoft unleashed Windows 8.1 Enterprise Preview today. The early look at the enterprise version of Windows 8.1 follows the release of Windows 8.1 Preview at Microsoft’s BUILD conference last month, and includes a variety of tools that show Microsoft’s commitment to both BYOD and virtualization.

Aside from the slew of changes and enhancements in the regular Windows 8.1 Preview edition, Windows 8.1 Enterprise Preview also includes features uniquely designed for business customers. Windows 8.1 Enterprise Preview adds business-friendly elements like Direct Acess, and BranchCache. It also provides IT admins with the power to configure and lock down the Start screen on Windows 8 clients.

Microsoft also has tools in Windows 8.1 Enterprise Preview to help out with BYOD and virtualization: Windows To Go, and Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI). Windows To Go lets the company put an entire managed Windows 8 desktop environment on a bootable USB thumb drive, and VDI gives the business the tools to enable users to use critical business software from virtually any Internet-connected device.

One of the hottest trends in business technology today is mobility and working remotely. The driving forces behind working remotely are the “bring your own device” (BYOD) trend and virtualization.

Novell serves up enterprise printing for BYOD era

Seeking a foothold in more enterprises running Microsoft software, Novell has introduced an application to streamline the process of connecting employees to workspace printers, even if they are using non-Microsoft computers and mobile devices, such as iPhones.

“We’re giving the administrator a very easy way to do browser-based administration of the print environment,” said Kai Reichert, a Novell product manager for collaboration. For the end user, the iPrint software provides a Web interface for easily setting up a new device relationship with a printer.

IPrint has been available as part of Novell’s Open Enterprise Server (OES) for some time, though now it can be run as a stand-alone software package. This version of iPrint is packaged in a VMware-based virtual machine, so it can be run as a virtual appliance.

IPrint provides a way for users to set up connections between their Microsoft Windows, Apple Mac, or Linux computers with their workplace’s network printers, without the need for contacting an administrator.

Most companies approve of personal devices at work, survey says

More than six out of 10 companies allow or mandate the use of employee-owned mobile devices for work in order to increase productivity, according to a survey released Tuesday.

While the BYOD (bring your own device) push has been at the forefront of press coverage, the majority of companies still provide at least a subset of devices to employees. One third of companies strictly mandate which devices can be used for work purposes and don’t allow any type of device provided by the employee, according to the survey conducted by the Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA), a nonprofit trade group.

The online survey of 502 U.S. IT and business executives was conducted in February. It also found that the most popular option, at 58 percent, was to have a mix of corporate-owned and employee-owned devices.

For 53 percent of those surveyed, the top reason for allowing employees to use or select their own devices was to increase productivity while employees are away from the office. Another reason was that employees like to use familiar devices.

CORRECTING and REPLACING Aruba Networks ClearPass Access Management System Now First BYOD Solution to Combine Network Control with Application and Device Management in a Single Platform

New Aruba WorkSpace Software Eliminates the High Capital and Resource Costs of Disparate BYOD Systems

SUNNYVALE, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Please replace the release with the following corrected version due to multiple revisions:

The corrected release reads:

ARUBA NETWORKS CLEARPASS ACCESS MANAGEMENT SYSTEM NOW FIRST BYOD SOLUTION TO COMBINE NETWORK CONTROL WITH APPLICATION AND DEVICE MANAGEMENT IN A SINGLE PLATFORM

New Aruba WorkSpace Software Eliminates the High Capital and Resource Costs of Disparate BYOD Systems

Aruba Networks, Inc. (NAS: ARUN) , a leading provider of next-generation network access solutions for the mobile enterprise, today announced Aruba WorkSpace, a new component of the company’s ClearPass Access Management System. With the addition of Aruba WorkSpace, for the first time, Network Access Control (NAC), Mobile Device Management (MDM) and Mobile Application Management (MAM) systems are a part of one solution and work together to secure company data and reduce BYOD helpdesk costs.

Aruba WorkSpace is built on an enterprise network policy system, making it network-fluent. This means higher network priority can be automatically assigned to work applications. In the event an employee’s device connects to an untrusted network, Aruba WorkSpace can automatically establish application-specific VPNs to encrypt traffic and provide uninterrupted access to internal resources. Aruba WorkSpace can also restrict network access if a device is jail-broken or contains unapproved applications.

“Existing approaches to BYOD have required enterprise IT departments to integrate different systems, adding complexity and creating employee usability and privacy concerns,” said Maribel Lopez, Principal Analyst, Lopez Research. “By combining all functions into a single platform, Aruba WorkSpace simplifies BYOD management, lessening the overall burden on IT.”

Mobile Device Management Partners Integrate for Network + Device + Application Management

As an alternative to its native device management functions, Aruba ClearPass features integration with top Mobile Device Management vendors, including AirWatch, Citrix, Fiberlink, JAMF Software, MobileIron and SOTI. This integration allows customers with existing …read more

For example, mobile device cameras can be disabled if the device is in a secure, restricted location.

The experts agree: Ban Facebook Home in your BYOD workplace

Facebook Home, the new app that replaces the home screen on an Android smartphone, should be banned from corporate networks to avoid unnecessary security risks, experts say.

Facebook introduced Home on Thursday, aiming to give its 1 billion users the option of always staying connected with friends and family through their Android phones.

The app, set for release next week, sits on top of the operating system and becomes the phone’s user interface. The UI is heavily focused on making it easy to interact with other Facebook users.

While that may be great for the social network’s avid fans, the app’s dominance is a nightmare for corporations that have a bring-your-own-device (BYOD) policy for employees.

BlackBerry details extensive security in its new OS

The recent release of the BlackBerry 10 operating system sets the stage for a security evolution as well, according to Alex Manea, manager of security services at BlackBerry.

For one thing, the BlackBerry 10 OS is distinct from any previous BlackBerry OS in that it provides a way to separate out personal applications from corporate-designated ones by using a capability built directly into the OS called Balance. Manea says this “partitions the phone into two spaces, a workspace 100 percent controlled by IT, which can delete it without interfering in the personal side” and represents a way that businesses can support the bring-your-own-device (BYOD) trend by allowing employees their personal space on BlackBerry, too.

BlackBerry Z10

And although this BlackBerry Balance dual-partition capability for BYOD is not available for Google Android or Apple iOS devices, BlackBerry management can support these non-BlackBerry devices, says Manea, adding it involves adding a specialized app to iOS and Android devices to do that. Through use of the server-based BlackBerry Device Service software for BlackBerry 10, businesses can manage Android and iOS devices as well, though not Microsoft WindowsMobile, he says. Management capabilities include features such as lock, track and wipe.

Is a 'bring your own support' movement killing the help desk?

It’s understandable that a CIO would be worried that a new “Bring Your Own Device” policy could lead to a spike in technical support calls, swamping an already resource-strapped help desk. Even worse, the help desk wouldn’t be able to provide a high level of support anyway, because it’s impossible for a small staff to be experts on so many new-fangled mobile devices.

But the flood of help desk calls never materialized, claims Gartner analyst Jarod Green.

In fact, BYOD and other factors have led to a decrease in help desk calls and further shrinking of help desk staff. The trend is so clear that the help desk-the traditional face of IT-risks becoming irrelevant in three years.

“It’s time to blow up your service desk,” Greene says.

It's "Gut-Check" Time for Check Point

By Richard Saintvilus, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Check Point investors have become insecure ever since the company reported disappointing fourth-quarter earnings. Consequently, the stock has been in a lull ever since. Complicating matters is that new entrants like Palo Alto Networks and Sourcefire are generating considerable buzz.

While Check Point still has a sizable market lead in enterprise network security, investors are unsure of what to make of the company’s recent lack of momentum. Some are suggesting that Check Point‘s “tech card” should be revoked after the company posted just 3% revenue growth in the fourth quarter, marking the seventh consecutive quarter of sales declines. Now, with Sourcefire only percentage points from a new 52-week high, and Palo Alto posting strong revenue numbers, it’s become “gut-check” time for Check Point.

Should investors wait or abandon the stock?
This decision really depends on where you are in the position. Unfortunately, Check Point does not offer a dividend to help pacify the time, which makes being patient more difficult. But this, too, has its limits. And, when compared to Fortinet, which posted a 25% revenue increase in Q4, Check Point‘s numbers were even more disturbing. But there’s hope.

Working in Check Point‘s favor is its strong management team, which did an excellent job navigating the company through last year’s challenges, which included soft enterprise spending and a brutal fiscal European environment. But those were last year’s problems. Besides, these issues didn’t seem to affect Cisco or Fortinet, which have similar exposure.

Then, again, set aside the recent growth struggles, and glance at Check Point‘s fundamentals; you may not find a more attractive company. The top line is unappealing, yes. But the bottom line is a different story. Check Point is still growing profits at an annual rate of 9%. Again, this speaks to the quality of management that the company has – one that is able to do more with less. This means that, despite soft sales, and possible loss of share to the likes of Cisco and Fortinet, management is making each sale that it does get, count.

What’s more, it also demonstrates how highly regarded Check Point is in enterprise security. The fact that the company is able to still target higher margin businesses means that Check Point is not succumbing to pricing pressure despite the aggressiveness of Palo Alto and Sourcefire. That said, management must still get revenue going in the right direction again. Otherwise, investors will begin to question if the premium they are paying today is deserved — at least when compared to Cisco.

Time to get more aggressive
The enterprise security space is pretty significant. Plus, with continued adoption of mobile devices within BYOD, or bring-your-own-device, this will only increase the demand for more security. However, though, it doesn’t appear as if Check Point cares much about growth. It sounds like a ridiculous claim, but the evidence has not been there. And the company has underinvested in some key areas.

For instance, aside from buying Dynasec in 2011, Check Point has not been aggressively expanding its enterprise footprint — at least not to the extent …read more
