If you are in North Carolina and have a zapper you better unload it before December. After that, if you are caught with one you could be guilty of a Class H felony and subject to a fine of up to $10,000. The more formal name for a zapper is “automated sales suppression device”. That made me picture a really obnoxious robot that insults potential customers. That’s not it. A zapper does not suppresses sales. It suppresses the record of sales. The definition in the North Carolina statute is:
A software program that falsifies the electronic records of electronic cash registers and other point-of-sale systems, including transaction data and transaction reports. The term includes the software program, any device that carries the software program, or an Internet link to the software program.

It isn’t every day that the rarest of Ferrari models change hands. In fact, you can count your fingers to get the number of 275 GTB/4*S N.A.R.T. Spyders that ever existed. The 1967 Ferrari you see here is one of those ten Spyders, and it has stayed in the same family since it was bought new.
The car was bought through Luigi Chinetti, Ferrari’s US importer at the time, by the late Eddie Smith Sr., a Ferrari collector and businessman from North Carolina. Smith kept it – and kept driving it – until the day he died six years ago. Since then, this remarkable machine has been collecting dust. Smith’s son, Eddie Smith Jr., spent some time with Petrolicious to give a history of the car and explain why he and his family are going to do the one thing his father never could: sell it. The catch? All of the money it earns on the auction block will be donated to charity.
“It’ll be a bittersweet thing, because we know the fact that all the money is going to charities that he would approve of,” Smith Jr. said about his father, and it “will really make him smile, because he loved to give back.”

The American Civil Liberties Union and ACLU of North Carolina Legal Foundation filed a lawsuit on behalf of three Rowan County residents demanding that the board of commissioners stop its practice of opening government meetings with prayers that were specific to one religion.
There hasn’t been much in the way of positive NASCAR news this year. Rather than building more grandstands for overflow crowds, some tracks are reducing seating capacity—flagship Daytona International Speedway is trimming its bleachers by around 15 percent. Five-time champion Jimmie Johnson seems to be rolling along uneventfully to a sixth crown. And Danica Patrick, who NASCAR publicists were hoping might have won three or four races so far in first full season, is turning out to be a mid-packer at best. But , if you dig deep enough, there is some unexpected good news to be found, in all places, smack in the middle of a bunch of corn fields in western Ohio. And it will occur, of all times, on a Wednesday night. And it has been sold out, nearly 18,000 seats, since January.
Eldora Speedway, the half-mile dirt track that isn’t on the way to much of anywhere, is hosting the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series on July 24th. It’s the first time a major NASCAR series has run on a dirt track since September 30, 1970, when Richard Petty drove a Plymouth to victory at State Fairgrounds Speedway in Raleigh, North Carolina. State Fairgrounds Speedway isn’t around anymore. Neither is Plymouth, for that matter. Has anybody seen Richard Petty lately?
Wednesday’s race, the CarCash Mudsummer Classic, is the result of a conversation a couple of years ago between the track’s owner, former Sprint Cup champion Tony Stewart, and NASCAR. Stewart bought Eldora from Earl Baltes, who owned it for 50 years. To understand Eldora, you have to understand Earl Baltes, now 92.
The CIA could not have done a better job of disguising a brilliant, savvy promoter as a backwoods hayseed, complete with dungarees, suspenders, a baseball cap with the bill turned up, and Elvis sideburns. A former bandleader, Baltes turned Eldora into a magic place—where else could a fan sit at the top of the grandstands, lean over while watching the race, and order a shot from a full bar? Baltes made Eldora into one of those valuable properties that is known worldwide by just one name, like Daytona, Talladega, Sebring, or Le Mans.
In 2001, he ran a late-model race that paid $1 million to the winner, which was Donnie Moran. Afterward, when we asked Baltes how the night went, he answered with his trademark line: “If I coulda sold one more hot dog, I woulda broke even.” If Baltes is there Wednesday night, ask him about the time he had Pancho Carter preside over the wedding of two gorillas. No, we are not making that up. With Earl Baltes, you don’t have to.

Sixteen of the top 25 companies offering a good work-life balance are technology companies, according to a new ranking from the job site Glassdoor, with the SAS Institute and National Instruments leading the pack.
The SAS Institute, which makes business analytics software for industries ranging from casinos to oil and gas providers, occupied the number-one spot on Glassdoor’s third annual ranking of the top companies for work-life balance, up from number four last year. National Instruments, which makes automated test equipment and virtual instrumentation software, was ranked second.
Other enterprise IT companies such as Slalom Consulting, Mentor Graphics, FactSet and Agilent Technologies also ranked high on the list. Other companies offering consumer services and products, like Yahoo, AOL, Nokia and MasterCard, were also named.
It is not surprising that SAS topped the list. The Cary, North Carolina-based company provides a dedicated work-life department staffed by eight full-time social workers who provide services to employees, for free, that include support services for child development, aging and elder care, and advising for the college search process.

Editor’s note: Last week, the ACLU filed a federal lawsuit to overturn Pennsylvania’s marriage law. In response, in a stunning move, Pennsylvania’s attorney general refused to defend the law. The Center for Vision & Values contacted Pennsylvania Family Institute President Michael Geer for a battlefront view.
V&V: You had a busy week last week on the legal front. What happened?
Geer: The week began with a phone call from a major national newspaper reporter, from whom I learned that the ACLU was about to file a federal lawsuit seeking to overturn Pennsylvania’s marriage law, and redefine this ageless institution. The week ended with Pennsylvania’s attorney general announcing that she would refuse to fulfill the obligation of her office and defend our state law in court. In between were numerous national, state, and local media interviews, followed by time spent at the capitol organizing a response and crafting legal and cultural strategies to protect and strengthen marriage.
V&V: You’ve been running PFI in Harrisburg for more than 20 years now. Are you surprised by the AG’s refusal to defend Pennsylvania’s marriage law? Do you recall anything similar happening?
Geer: There really is no precedent that matches the blatantly political move by Attorney General [Kathleen] Kane. Even the lead counsel in the ACLU’s lawsuit against our marriage law called her decision “an earthquake moment.” In a television interview during last year’s primary campaign for attorney general, then-candidate Kane stated, “The attorney general does not have the right to pick and choose which laws he or she enforces.” She said doing so injects politics into the job and, “That’s a dangerous proposition.” Even so, I was not surprised at Kane’s action – she is following precedents set by AG’s and other top elected officials in California, Illinois, and elsewhere, and by those in the U.S. Department of Justice on this issue. It really is a dangerous proposition, one that’s very damaging to our political system and the rule of law. I hoped for better from Kathleen Kane, but was not surprised when she did not deliver on her promise
V&V: Is this issue pertinent to people in other states around the nation?
Geer: It is in many ways – most notably because ultimately the ACLU is seeking to not only overturn marriage laws in Pennsylvania, but to impose a redefinition of marriage on the entire country. Such a Roe v.Wade-type sweeping decision would certainly not end the debate on the issue, but would usher in significant restrictions on religious liberty and free speech, not to mention the impact on marriage itself and the well-being of children.
V&V: Is the ACLU filing similar suits in other states. If so, why? Do you detect a political agenda beyond the legal implications of these cases?
Geer: Yes and yes. In addition to the lawsuit in Pennsylvania, the ACLU announced that it was also planning to file constitutional challenges in Virginia and North Carolina. Quite clearly, they are hoping to bring one or all of these cases to the U.S. Supreme Court to have “same-sex …read more

Mysterious, pyramid-like structures spotted in the Egyptian desert by an amateur satellite archaeologist might be long-lost pyramids after all, according to a new investigation into the enigmatic mounds.
Angela Micol, who last year found the structures using Google Earth 5,000 miles away in North Carolina, says puzzling features have been uncovered during a preliminary ground proofing expedition, revealing cavities and shafts.
“Moreover, it has emerged these formations are labeled as pyramids on several old and rare maps,” Micol told Discovery News….

An 11-year-old North Carolina girl was electrocuted when a current ripped through the pool where she was practicing with a team at a local swim club.
MyFox8.com reports Lauren Cecil was swimming with two other girls Tuesday evening when an electric line snapped and fell into a parking lot at the swim club in Lexington, sending an electric current through the water.
The president of the swim club, Julie Rhodes, tells MyFox8.com she was standing with a group of parents and coaches on the swim deck when she head a loud “pop” and saw the wire fall.
Rhodes says she saw a puff of smoke, so she sent one of the lifeguards to stand by the pool and encouraged the swimmers to get out of the pool for a minute.
The two girls were able to jump out of the pool, but Lauren grabbed the pool ladder.
“When she grabbed the ladder, it looked like a big shock went through her,” Rhodes tells MyFox8.com
Attempts to rescue the girl were hampered because electricity continued to shock lifeguards who were trying to pull her from the water.
“We all tried (to) reach down and grab her and it was shocking us when we touched her, so we ended up having to get the body board,” Rhodes tells MyFox8.com. “And got it under her and held her head up with the kick board.”
The lifeguards were able to get Lauren out of the water and perform CPR, but she was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Davidson County Fire Marshall Brad Needham said investigators from several agencies are trying to determine how the electricity was diverted into the water after the power line snapped.
Rhodes tellsMyFox8.com Lauren had been on the swim team for three or four years, and the team had been preparing for a swim meet on Friday.
“Lauren seemed to love the swim team. She was there at practice almost every night,” Rhodes said. “Very happy girl. Bubbly… She just seemed like a great all-around girl.”
