Video: Perp steals cop car from back seat, makes dangerous getaway

In an episode that wouldn’t have been out of place on Reno 911!, a man that was on suspicion of being under the influence of drugs, alcohol or both, was picked up by police for stealing a pickup truck, and managed to wriggle out of his handcuffs and steal the police cruiser he was being held inside. The entire fiasco, which took place last month near Salt Lake City, can be seen on the cruiser’s in-car cameras.
The suspect, Gordon Graham, took advantage of the officers’ inattentiveness while they were searching his truck, contorting about so his hands were in front of him, and then wiggling out of the cuffs. He then dove head-first through a flap that was opened for him after complaining about the heat, got in the driver’s seat, and made a break for freedom.
After nearly hitting one of the deputies in his escape, Graham lead police on a high-speed chase across two Utah counties. He eventually abandoned the cruiser, leading cops on a two-hour manhunt.
Not surprisingly, police caught up with him. Graham was charged, plead guilty and was sentenced to prison for second-degree receiving stolen property, second-degree theft and two counts of shoplifting in the third degree.

No way defeat turned boxer into bomber, coach says
The Boston Marathon bomber’s former boxing coach says his one-time pupil may have been dispirited by boxing setbacks, but that’s no reason for the attacks that killed three people and injured more than 200.
The coach is clear: Don’t blame Tamerlan Tsarnaev‘s metamorphosis from a seemingly well-adjusted American immigrant – with dreams of one day representing The U.S. in the Olympics – into a radicalized killer on amateur boxing.
“That’s ridiculous,” Bob Russo, 58, of Portland, Maine, tells FoxNews.com. “You can’t tie the sport of amateur boxing — that has helped so many immigrants and unfortunate people — to his transition to radical Islam.
“It’s a reach. It takes more than that. I didn’t look at him that closely, the Facebook stuff and all that. But he just seemed like a typical refugee kid, (when I knew him). It’s a reach that amateur boxing dashed his dreams and caused this tragedy.”
According to The New York Times, Tamerlan Tsarnaev‘s transition from a promising pugilist – with a flair for the dramatic – into the Boston Bomber can be traced to two seminal events concerning his boxing career.
The paper reports Tsarnaev won the 2009 New England Golden Gloves Championships for the 201-pound division, progressing to the organization’s Tournament of Champions, held that year in Salt Lake City.
There, Tsarnaev reportedly lost a close decision to the late Lamar Fenner, of Chicago. “It was a close fight, but close is close and you either win or lose it,” Russo tells FoxNews.com. “My opinion was that he had the edge, and most people felt that way, but it wasn’t like they robbed him. I don’t consider it a major robbery.
“As I recall, he was fine, disappointed like everyone else, but fine, and not a bad sport. After he lost, we as a team stayed together and cheered each other on. He was around. He didn’t seem desperately disappointed or crazy, or anything like that.”
The Times reports Tsarnaev again won the New England Championship in 2010, but a rule change enacted by the Golden Gloves that year disqualified him from participating in the Tournament of Champions, or at least until the Russian-born immigrant secured his American citizenship.
“It was a blow the immigrant boxer could not withstand,” writes The Times in a report published Sunday.
However, Russo — the co-coach of the 2009 New England team and the current director of New England Golden Gloves — says that he would have made the same decision had he been in charge.
Prior to 2010, the Golden Gloves allowed non-citizens, like Tsarnaev, to participate in the national championship, unless it was an Olympic year. Usually, winning the nationals secured the victor a tryout for the Olympic team on an Olympic year. But the old Golden Gloves policy, says Russo, resulted in confusion, controversy and numerous grievances on the part of both American and foreign fighters.
“It caused problems,” says Russo. “In the years the Golden Gloves would allow [non-citizens] into the nationals, the local guys didn’t want to fight their fighter against them because they

NY authorities deal Russian mob a losing hand
It’s a case teaming with colorful characters: a reputed Russian mob boss once accused in an Olympic scandal, a wealthy art world impresario who hung out with Leonardo DiCaprio and a woman named Molly Bloom who gained a celebrity following by hosting them at high-stakes poker games.
U.S. authorities allege all had roles in a sprawling scheme by two related Russian-American organized crime enterprises. Prosecutors say in recent years the operations laundered at least $100 million in illegal gambling proceeds through hundreds of bank accounts and shell companies in Cyprus and the United States.
The sprawling case against more than 30 defendants, announced this week by federal prosecutors in Manhattan, illustrates the insatiable appetite for sports betting around the globe — and the enormous potential for illicit profits. The steep rise in wealth among the upper class in the former Soviet Union has driven that potential to new heights, said Mark Galeotti, a Russian organized crime expert at New York University.
“We’re seeing higher-rolling businessmen involved in these types of cases,” Galeotti said. The high rollers’ bookies are left with the problem “of trying to figure out what to do with suitcases full of cash, and that leads to the money laundering,” he added.
The tentacles of the scheme reached into Trump Tower, the high rise on Fifth Avenue where prosecutors say a U.S. ringleader was living in an apartment one floor below Donald Trump‘s own place. There, he oversaw a network of Internet sites that formed “the world’s largest sports book” that catered “almost exclusively to oligarchs living in the Ukraine and the Russian Federation,” prosecutors said.
On one of the thousands of conversations intercepted on the defendants’ cellphones, the leader could be heard warning a customer who owed money that “he should be careful, lest he be tortured or found underground,” a prosecutor said.
The ring paid Alimzhan Tokhtakhounov — already under indictment in a separate U.S. case accusing him of bribing Olympic figure skating judges at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City — $20 million in gambling proceeds in a two-month period alone, court papers said. In another transaction in late 2010, the same man wired $3 million from a Cyprus bank account to another account in the United States, the papers said.

Scientists: Superstorm Sandy jolted United States
Superstorm Sandy didn’t just rattle the East Coast, it also jiggled the ground across the country ever so slightly, scientists reported Thursday.
Earthquake sensors located as far away as the Pacific Northwest detected the storm’s energy as it surged toward the New York metropolitan region last year. The network typically records the sudden release of energy in the Earth’s crust, but it can pick up shaking triggered by ocean waves, mine cave-ins and tornadoes.
As Sandy lashed at New York City and New Jersey, the force of waves slamming into other waves shook the seafloor, which was recorded by the system of 500 sensors.
The energy generated by Sandy was similar to small earthquakes between magnitudes 2 and 3, seismologists at the University of Utah estimated.
While they did not track Sandy’s strength last October, they went back and analyzed seismic data before and after the storm churned ashore. The findings were presented at a meeting of the Seismological Society of America in Salt Lake City.
Sandy, which started off as a hurricane that later merged with another storm system, caused widespread property damage, swamping homes and businesses along the jersey shore and parts of New York City.
Sandy wasn’t the first storm to be sensed by quake stations. When Hurricane Katrina took aim at New Orleans in 2005, instruments in California tracked the path of the punishing waves.
Other events also have been captured by seismic sensors in recent years. A deadly coal mine collapse in Utah in 2007 registered as a magnitude-3.9 quake. Earlier this year, a meteor that exploded over Siberia’s Ural Mountains sent rippling shock waves that were detected by ground instruments.

Technical Program Update
In the first quarter of 2013, Ireland continued the process of transferring its successful gold and silver extraction process from its test location at AuRIC’s facility in Salt Lake City to Ireland‘s on-site pilot plant in Nevada. The goal of this technology transfer is the continuous operation of the on-site pilot plant.
During the quarter, Ireland‘s technical program focused on upgrading the on-site water supply to improve its compatibility with thiosulphate leaching. Work included comparative analyses of the municipal water supply utilized by AuRIC at its Salt Lake City laboratory and the water provided by the on-site well at the Columbus Project. Based upon information derived from these comparative analyses, Ireland recently completed the installation of a new water conditioning circuit at the Columbus Project in order to supply process water to the leach circuit that is similar in character to the water that was utilized for all of the successful leach tests conducted at AuRIC’s Salt Lake City facilities.

Feds move on 'Mountain Man' for weapons charges
The fugitive recently captured by Utah authorities for a series of cabin break-ins over six years is now under federal investigation for firearms violations.
Federal authorities tell The Associated Press they’re getting involved. The Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms and Explosives confirms it has joined the investigation. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Salt Lake City says Troy James Knapp could face both federal and state charges.
Local authorities say 45-year-old Knapp survived winters by holing up inside cabins, sleeping in the owners’ beds, eating their food, stealing weapons and camping gear. Now at Sanpete County jail, he’s telling detectives where he cached the stolen goods.
Officials say a long criminal record prohibited Knapp from possessing firearms.
Knapp will make his first court appearance by video Wednesday in Manti, Utah.

Hawatmeh said “the Play Beverages Parties,” including Bev Group, LLC, CirTran Beverage Corporation, CirTran Corporation, Fadi Nora and himself, settled with “the LIB-MP parties,” including LIB-MP Beverage, LLC, American Sales and Merchandising, LLC, and individuals Warner K. Depuy, Michael Liberty and Jeffrey Pollack.
Under the agreement, the parties exchanged mutual general releases without payment by any party of any amounts to any other. Accordingly, Play Beverages Parties was relieved of the $1,375,618 payment obligation to the LIB-MP parties. .
Mr. Hawatmeh said that “the LIB-MP parties” had filed the petition that forced PlayBev into involuntary bankruptcy, but in December, 2012, the U.S. Bankruptcy Court (District of Utah) vacated the bankruptcy, freeing PlayBev to take legal actions to protect the product license granted for its Playboy Energy Drink.
That was the first “three consecutive major legal victories for ‘the Play Beverages Parties’,” he said, setting the stage for this settlement. “Now we can go back to work to regain the momentum we had in establishing Playboy Energy Drink a ‘player’ in the international marketplace.”

Woman to lead closing prayer at Mormon conference
For the first time in 183 years, a woman will lead a closing prayer at the semi-annual gathering of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Church leaders announced Saturday that Jean A. Stevens would lead the morning session’s closing prayer for more than 100,000 members of the church who’ve gathered in Salt Lake City for two-day general conference, and the millions more watching via satellite, radio or Internet broadcast.
A feminist group launched a campaign in January asking church leaders to let women lead the opening and closing prayer at the conference as a symbol of gender equality.
Women can hold many leadership positions in church but aren’t allowed to be bishops or stake presidents.
The conference takes place all day Saturday and continues Sunday.

These 2 Investors Have Made a Bundle on Bank of America

Every investor knows that the old adage, “Buy low and sell high,” is good investment advice, but the devil is in the details: How does an investor know when to jump in as the pendulum swings from one side to the other?
Having that intuition is doubtless what separates the greatest investors from the rest, and two of these savvy characters, Warren Buffett and Allan Mecham, used their innate knowledge to make sizable investments in Bank of America when the big bank was in dire straits — and both are still reaping the rewards.
A young man with a nose for investing
Mecham, barely 35 years old, heads up the privately held Arlington Value Management, a fund located in Salt Lake City that returned 36% last year. Nicknamed “The 400% Man,” because of his fund’s superior returns, Mecham made his name by investing in U.S. companies — often during a low ebb in their business cycle. Betting on good times bringing home great profits has certainly proved to be a lucrative strategy for him.
And so it was with Bank of America. When the stock tanked toward the end of 2011, Mecham went on a buying spree. B of A stock comprised 18% of his fund’s assets at the close of 2012, and that purchase has no doubt helped his company attain its lofty returns since then.
Not surprisingly, Mecham is also a fan of Warren Buffett, and that same year, he ramped up the fund’s position in Berkshire Hathaway to approximately 50% of the fund’s holdings.
Buffet loves the big banks
Buffett’s affection for the biggest banks, particularly Wells Fargo , is legendary. He consistently edges up his stake in the venerable old bank and made another big purchase in the second half of 2012, thus making the stock Berkshire’s second largest investment. The bank’s mortgage-origination production line has brought in profits that prove the shrewdness of Buffett’s investment instincts.
When the Oracle invested $5 billion in Bank of America during the dark days of 2011, he not only helped bolster confidence in the big bank, but helped his own company, as well. His preferred shares pay him a juicy 6%, and his additional options to purchase shares at a little over $7 in the future are valuable indeed. This transaction mirrors another he made with Goldman Sachs in 2008, when he made a similar $5 billion infusion into that struggling firm. That outlay is now translating into a nice long-term investment in Goldman, without Berkshire having to invest another penny.
A takeaway for everyday investors
Of course, most investors don’t have the wherewithal to make the grandiose type of investments that Mecham and Buffett transact. But this story lends much weight to one of Buffett’s famous investment credos, “Be fearful when others are greedy, and greedy when others are fearful.” And that’s a lesson that any investor, no matter how small, can take to the bank.

Grant Smith Sentenced For Watching Child Porn On Plane

BOSTON — A Utah man charged with viewing child pornography on a Boston-bound commercial flight won’t have to serve his jail sentence if he sticks to the terms of his probation.
Prosecutors say 50-year-old Salt Lake City resident Grant Smith pleaded guilty Thursday to possessing child pornography.
