Inca mummies: Child sacrifice victims fed drugs and alcohol

By hnn

Scientists have revealed that drugs and alcohol played a key part in the months and weeks leading up to the children’s deaths.

Tests on one of the children, a teenage girl, suggest that she was heavily sedated just before her demise….

The mummified remains were discovered in 1999, entombed in a shrine near the summit of the 6,739m-high Llullaillaco volcano in Argentina.

Three children were buried there: a 13-year-old girl, and a younger boy and girl, thought to be about four or five years old.

Their remains date to about 500 years ago, during the time of the Inca empire, which dominated South America until the Europeans arrived at the end of the 15th Century….

Official: Michael Andretti signs on to field Formula E team

By Brandon Turkus

Andretti Autosport Spark-Renault SRT_01E Formula E Car - overhead front three-quarter view

The FIA’s Formula E World Championship is picking up steam. We reported earlier this week that the series had confirmed a ten-race calendar that would start in 2014 and bring the series to North and South America, Europe and Asia. We also mentioned that Formula E’s boss Alejandro Agag was in the process of recruiting teams for the new series, with a particular focus on the front runners of Formula One.

What we didn’t know was that Agag was also going after the cream of the crop in other open-wheel series, too. Now comes news that Andretti Autosport will be taking part in the inaugural season of the new championship. Michael Andretti’s outfit is the first American team to sign up for the championship, joining the United Kingdom’s Drayson Racing and China Racing (we’ll let you guess where that team calls home).

On the occasion of the announcement, Michael Andretti himself chimed in to say, “I look forward to further exploring the series and helping build the future of open-wheel racing across the world.” Agag is pleased to have an American team in the series, and hinted at further additions in the coming months saying,” “As well being the first team from the US, today’s announcement now means we have three teams from three different continents and we’re looking forward to announcing many more over the coming months.”

Andretti, Drayson, and China are set to fill just three of the ten spots for the series first season, so we can expect to hear a lot more as additional teams are confirmed for the 2014 season. A spec car, the Spark-Renault SRT_01E, will be the used by each team for the inaugural season.

Obama’s Latest Blunder Is Treasonous In 178 Countries

By Floyd Brown

Democrats Despise Taxpayers SC Obamas Latest Blunder is Treasonous in 178 Countries

In May, I shared with you the details about 172 House members visiting over 90 countries and every continent except Antarctica in 2012 – all on your dime. But members of the U.S. House of Representatives actually travel modestly compared to the VIP travel undertaken by Obama’s friends and appointees.

And of course, any travel review needs to start with the travel queen of the last four years, Hillary Clinton.

Hillary traveled at a record-setting pace, journeying 956,733 miles and setting foot in 112 countries. This adds up to 2,084 hours spent flying around the world, which is equivalent to 86 whole days spent aboard her government-issued luxury jetliner. And how do we know these facts? Because she likes to brag about them.

But when it comes to costs, your guess is as good as mine. Despite repeated Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, her department refuses to come clean about how much this travel cost U.S. taxpayers.

Ironically, Obama’s “most transparent administration in history” works hard to hide the details of the luxurious globe-trotting. But thanks to some hard work by lawyers using the Freedom of Information Act, some other portions of the travel details are beginning to surface.

And That’s Only the Beginning…

It’s only proper that Attorney General Eric Holder tells us how much his travels cost, since he’s the federal officer in charge of FOIA compliance. While he hasn’t been too diligent about asking others to comply, he did comply himself – to some degree.

From his disclosures, we learned that during 2011, Holder filed 62 long-distant jaunts that cost us, at a minimum, $1.45 million. However, he refused to disclose flight costs for seven major trips out, including travels to China, Hawaii, and Brussels.

Holder’s travelling includes an April 2011 sojourn to Las Vegas, mixing business and personal travel, which totaled $46,358. Other “personal” trips, including visits to Martha’s Vineyard and Miami, cost us taxpayers a whopping $169,502.

And of course there’s Joe Biden. Today, we learned that the vice-president’s six-day trip to South America and the Caribbean included one 20-hour stop in Trinidad and Tobago that cost an astounding $245,000. As has become standard, the contract was awarded without “full and open competition” because of security and logistical concerns.

Yet the scariest part is that, while the travel for administration officials sounds expensive to those of us who pay our own bills while flying coach or driving on our summer trips, these Obama appointees don’t even hold a candle to Michelle and Barack.

First, there was Michelle Obama’s 2012 President’s Day weekend ski vacation to Aspen, Colorado with her two daughters. The total cost for the Aspen ski vacation was at least $83,182.99. The bill for the U.S. Secret Service, including accommodations at the Fasching Haus deluxe condominiums and the Inn at Aspen, came to $48,950.38. The cost for the flight, per official DOD published hourly rates, was $22,583.70.  Food and miscellaneous on-flight items cost $235.44. The cost for rental cars totaled $6,442.23.

But that’s nothing. A drop in the bucket. More importantly, …read more

Argentine Jews demand justice from Iran in bombing

Argentine Jewish leaders are harshly criticizing their government on the 19th anniversary of the nation’s worst terrorist attack.

The bombing of the Argentine-Israeli Mutual Association killed 85 people in 1994 and remains unsolved. AMIA President Leonardo Jmelnitzky and survivors of the attack lashed out Thursday accusing President Cristina Fernandez and Foreign Minister Hector Timerman of guaranteeing still more impunity for those responsible by making a pact with Iran.

The accord promises to enable Argentine prosecutors to travel to Teheran and question high-ranking Iranian officials suspected of organizing the attack. But there is no indication that Iran will ever allow the suspects to be extradited.

Prosecutor Alberto Nisman’s 500-page indictment accuses Iran and Hezbollah of establishing terror cells across South America.

Iranian officials have rejected that charge as a Zionist conspiracy.

Barrick Battles Rage on 2 Fronts

By Rich Duprey, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Underscoring the turmoil ripping through the world’s biggest gold miner in the wake of a court order suspending its Chilean Pascua-Lama project, Barrick Gold reported that three top executives from its South America operations have resigned, including the president, Guillermo Calo, who was appointed to the position just last July.

Pascua-Lama is one of the world’s largest gold and silver resources, with nearly 18 million ounces of proven and probable gold reserves, 676 million ounces of silver, and an expected mine life of 25 years. It was expected to produce an average of 800,000 to 850,000 ounces of gold and 35 million ounces of silver in its first five years of operation.

Earlier this month, the Chilean court agreed with the concerns of local indigenous tribes that Barrick is mining in pristine glacial regions and causing environmental damage. It ordered the project suspended until the miner addresses those concerns. The Reuters report of the executive resignations indicated that it was part of a larger effort by Barrick to shake up the project and meet the regulatory mandates necessary to get it back on track.

South America has become an unsettled region to mine in. Newmont Mining had its Peruvian Conga project brought to a short stop over environmental concerns, while Vale recently abandoned an Argentinean project because of the country’s policies. Costs for Pascua-Lama have ballooned over the past decade and now stand at about $8.5 billion, putting it at risk of becoming an albatross around the miner’s neck even before the court decision. Barrick even resorted to bringing in engineering specialist Fluor to expand the scope of its project management before the court order.

Barrick now says it is reviewing all options available to it, warning that if construction activities in Chile did not resume before the end of the year, it could suspend the project altogether.

Investors are also becoming restless with management, which sought to give its co-chairman, John Thornton, a massive $11.9 million “signing bonus.” An equally massive 82% of those voting on the non-binding referendum at the annual shareholders’ meeting the other day rejected the payout, even as they approved all the directors that stood for re-election.

Although management isn’t required to follow the shareholder statement, it would probably be a wise move to placate investors until it can also mollify Chilean regulators. With falling gold prices eating into profits, Barrick can’t afford to fight a war on two fronts.

Chile rushes to aid ship in Antarctica after fire

A Chilean military tugboat is heading to Antarctica to avoid an ecological disaster where a Chinese fishing ship caught fire.

The Kai Xin vessel burned off the coast of Antarctica Wednesday. Its 97 crew members were rescued by a Norwegian ship close to Chile‘s research base near the Antarctic peninsula.

Capt. Juan Marcelo Villegas is maritime governor for Chile‘s portion of Antarctica and he says the ship has moved about 5 miles (7 kilometers) north, drifting unmanned in zigzags near pointy glaciers.

He says a navy tugboat left port near the southern tip of South America to tow the ship to harbor.

Fog forced Chile‘s air force to cancel a flight Thursday to check on the ship’s condition, but Villegas says the ship is not at risk of sinking.

An Argentine Tradition Threatens to Crumble With City Architecture

By hnn

BUENOS AIRES — As Concepción Martínez, her husband and two daughters pulled into the last subway station here, cheers and clapping erupted from the throngs of people, some wearing turn-of-the-20th-century dress, waiting on the platform.

Camera flashes lighted the tunnels as passengers took their final rides in the saloonlike wagons — with their wooden benches, frosted glass lamps and manually operated brass doors — of South America’s first subway line.

“Every day, I ride this train into work, so this is a kind of goodbye,” Ms. Martínez said.

The antique Belgian-built cars, a symbol of Buenos Aires’s early-20th-century wealth, were taken out of service this year, and their retirement is a poignant example of the city’s struggle to preserve its physical history as some of its icons and infrastructure crumble….

Growth in Beverage Business Boosts CirTran to 39% Gain in Sales in 2012

SALT LAKE CITY–(BUSINESS WIRE)– CirTran Corporation (OTC BB: CIRC) has filed its Form 10-K for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2012, reporting a significant upturn in sales and an even more dramatic improvement in bottom line results driven by its Playboy Energy Drink line of products.

Revenues from beverage distribution, which accounted for 98% of sales during the year, grew to $4,260,417, a 39% gain over the $3,064,438 reported for fiscal 2011. During 2012, CirTran established operations and gained new revenue in Asia including China, the Middle East, and Africa, among other areas, while operations continued in the U.S., South America, Europe and Canada. Entering 2013, CirTran had beverage distribution operations in over 20 countries.

For fiscal 2012, CirTran reported a loss from operations of $375,813, an improvement of more than 94% from a loss of $6,575,219 reported a year ago.

Overall, for fiscal 2012, CirTran reported a net loss of $1,787,643, a 75% improvement from a loss of $7,043,410 reported a year ago. A major contributor was a decrease in operating expenses from $6,378,374 in 2011 to $3,606,672 in 2012, an improvement of $2,732,622 or 43%.

Iehab J. Hawatmeh, CirTran’s founder, chairman and president, said that in 2012 CirTran gained in its beverage business even as it dealt with costly and time consuming legalities.

“As we have reported in filings starting in December and continuing through the first four months of 2013,” Mr. Hawatmeh said, “CirTran has been victorious in all settled-to-date court proceedings involving our Playboy Energy Drink-centric beverage business.” He said that in a settlement reached earlier this month, CirTran beverage business was relieved of approximately $1.4 million in accrued royalties and other debt obligations claimed by former Play Beverages‘ partners, which will accrue to CirTran’s bottom line in 2013 quarterly and annual filings.

“The courts have ruled for CirTran, and we have benefitted from out-of-court settlements,” Mr. Hawatmeh. “Now we plan to work around the world for the rest of the year to further expand our beverage sales and be back to business full-time rather than to have to deal with law suits and litigation.”

A list of papal advisers on Curia reform

Pope Francis on Saturday named eight cardinals to a panel that will help advise him running the church and reforming the Vatican bureaucracy, or Curia. Seven non-Vatican officials were drawn from Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North and South America to give it geographical breadth.

VATICAN OFFICIAL

Cardinal Giuseppe Bertello, president of the Vatican city state administration that runs the actual functioning of the Vatican, including its profit-making museums. There has been much speculation that Bertello might take on a greater role in Francis’ administration; he has been mentioned as a possible secretary of state.

NON-VATICAN OFFICIALS

Cardinal Francisco Javier Errazuriz Ossa, the retired archbishop of Santiago, Chile. Like the former Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Errazuriz was a papal contender in the 2005 conclave, since he was then the president of the powerful Latin American Conference of Bishops. This time around, at age 79, he was dogged by allegations that he mishandled the case of a notorious sexually abusive priest.

Cardinal Oswald Gracias, archbishop of Mumbai, India.

Cardinal Reinhard Marx, archbishop of Munich and Freising, Germany. Marx has been at the forefront in Germany of trying to turn the tide on clerical sex abuse; his archdiocese is part of a joint effort to create a center to teach priests and church personnel around the world the best practices to protect children and prevent them being abused.

Cardinal Laurent Monsengwo Pasinya, archbishop of Kinshasa, Congo.

Cardinal Sean Patrick O’Malley, archbishop of Boston. O’Malley was considered a contender for the papacy in the last conclave, a Franciscan Capuchin monk so very much in the same spirituality as Francis. He was a leading voice of reform during the pre-conclave meetings. The 68-year-old O’Malley has spent his career as a bishop cleaning up dioceses shattered by child sex abuse.

Cardinal George Pell, archbishop of Sydney, Australia. Pell has also been a major proponent for reform, telling The Associated Press before the conclave: “It would be useful to have a pope who can pull the show together, lift the morale of the Curia, and strengthen a bit of the discipline there and effectively draw on all the energies and goodness of the great majority of the people in the Curia,” Pell said.

Is South America Losing Its Luster for Miners?

By Rich Duprey, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

After Barrick Gold became the latest miner to have a development project halted in South America, investors need to ask whether the continent will lose its sheen as an attractive haven for mining.

A Chilean appeals court ordered Barrick to stop development at its Pascua-Lama gold and silver project on the Argentinean border after approving complaints from local indigenous groups until it addresses their environmental concerns.

Mining collapse
Last year, Newmont Mining saw its Conga gold project in Peru brought to a standstill after environmental concerns were also raised. The government says it’s on the “back burner” now and with most of the locals opposed to it going forward, a project that was once estimated could yield some $2 billion annually in gold is now collecting cobwebs. Vale abandoned an iron ore project in Argentina after the country’s fiscal policies caused costs to soar and government and labor unions made untenable demands while Yamana Gold previously had operations suspended at its Agua Rica project in Argentina after violent clashes with locals and suspended export sales — since restarted — from Alumbrera after the country adopted revenue repatriation laws.

Sticker shock
Barrick, as the world’s biggest gold miner, had been looking to the $8.5 billion Pascua-Lama mine to carry it forward, but under development for a decade, the cost and scale of the project has escalated beyond its ability to control it. It subsequently outsourced much of the work to engineering and construction firm Fluor following the successful completion of its development of Pueblo Viejo, a joint venture between Barrick and Goldcorp.

Yet there’s trouble brewing there as environmentalists contend Barrick is violating the law against mining on or near glacial areas. Ejecting the gold miner from the country completely would not upset the groups arrayed against it.

Sic semper tyrannis
In the end, it becomes a question of whether the cost of doing business in South America is worth the risk. As many industries saw in Venezuela during strongman Hugo Chavez‘s rule, and as they’re witnessing now under his protege Cristina Kirchner, livelihoods will be expropriated on a whim or the cost of doing business will be raised to such a degree as a result of ruinous fiscal policy that it no longer makes economic sense to do business there.

Investors will not only need to question what the price of gold and silver will be in determining whether Barrick or Yamana or Goldcorp is a worthwhile investment, but considering geographic risk will become just as big a component of one’s due diligence.

Goldcorp is one of the leading players in the gold mining market. For the last several years, investors have been the beneficiaries of several successful acquisitions and strong organic growth. Goldcorp’s low-cost production of one of the most sought-after metals in the world continues to make this stock an attractive choice for long-term investors. IBM Invests $1 Billion in Flash Technology

By Chris Neiger, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

IBM just launched a $1 billion initiative to build and test Flash technology for enterprise solutions. The company said that Flash is already an integral part of consumer products, and that the technology could help companies tackle Big Data challenges.

IBM said in a press release statement that Flash could reduce transaction times for banking, trading and telecommunications by up to 90%, and batch processing times by up to 85%. The company also said its Flash technology could reduce energy consumption by up to 80% in data centers.

“Because it contains no moving parts, the technology is also more reliable, durable, and more energy efficient than spinning hard drives,” the company stated in the release.

IBM will spend the $1 billion to develop and design Flash solutions for servers, storage systems, and middleware. The company plans to set up 12 “Centers of Competency” around the world to run proof-of-concept scenarios for companies, using real-world data.

The company plans to build the centers in China, France, Germany, India, Japan, Singapore, South America, U.K., and the U.S., and will be operational by the end of this year.

Fugitive featured on 'America's Most Wanted' nabbed in Colombia

A fugitive wanted in the 2006 shooting of a motorist along Interstate 81 in northeastern Pennsylvania has been captured in South America.

U.S. Marshal Martin J. Pane of Scranton says that John Caro was arrested Monday in Medellin, Colombia. Pane announced the arrest Thursday.

Police say Caro argued with a woman at a Luzerne County strip club in December 2006, then followed her after she left. Caro allegedly pulled alongside the woman’s car in Lackawanna County and shot at her from his vehicle. The victim was treated for gunshot wounds in the face and neck.

Caro was featured last year on “America’s Most Wanted.” The U.S. Marshals Service says the episode yielded numerous tips that helped find Caro.

Caro awaits extradition to the United States to face attempted homicide charges.
