Rolling Stone blasted for giving 'rock star' treatment to accused Boston bomber

Rolling Stone magazine is drawing fire for putting Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev on its cover, in a glam shot that critics say continues to blur the line between fame and infamy.

The picture, which accompanies a story titled “Jahar’s World,” shows the accused murderer with his long, curly hair tousled and the hint of a goatee, reminiscent of the magazine’s iconic shots of rock and roll royalty like The Doors’ Jim Morrison. The cover could send a dangerous message to Tsarnaev’s warped supporters, said one critic.

“If they want to become famous, kill somebody,” Northeastern University criminologist Jack Levin told MyFoxBoston.com.

The issue, which hits newsstands Friday, depicts an unsmiling Tsarnaev, 19, above a boldface headline, “The Bomber.” The story, which features interviews from childhood friends, teachers and law enforcement agents, promises to reveal how a “popular, promising student was failed by his family, fell into radical Islam, and became a monster.”

In a blog posting late Tuesday, Rolling Stone detailed “five revelations” in the story by contributing editor Janet Reitman, including Tsarnaev’s increasing devotion to Islam while still in high school, as well as his older brother Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s possible mental illness, which the boys’ mother decided would be better treated by Islam than by a psychiatrist.

“Around 2008, Jahar’s older brother Tamerlan confided to his mother that he felt like ‘two people’ were inside him,” the blog posting reads. “She confided this to a close friend who felt he might need a psychiatrist, but Zubeidat believed that religion would be the cure for her son’s inner demons and growing mental instability, and pushed him deeper into Islam.”

Rolling Stone has not commented publicly on the decision to put Tsarnaev on the cover, which recently featured actor Johnny Depp and singers Rihanna and Justin Bieber.

Supporters of Tsarnaev, who believe in the face of overwhelming evidence that he’s innocent of the charges against him, appeared last week during his federal court appearance in Boston. Some wore T-shirts with phrases like “Free the Lion,” while others held “Free Jahar” signs outside Boston’s John Joseph Moakley federal courthouse on Wednesday.

“Give Dzhokhar back his life,” one protester reportedly said.

“If you really cared about the victims you would be more interested in the truth,” said another Tsarnaev supporter.

The Rolling Stone cover quickly drew a negative reaction on social media, as “Boycott Rolling Stone” quickly became a trending Twitter topic in Boston.

“Very rarely does something make me so mad I have a negative tweet, but #BoycottRollingStone,” one user posted early Wednesday. “Absolutely unacceptable.”

Many other Twitter users indicated they would never purchase another Rolling Stone magazine.

“Way to glorify a madman,” another posting read.

Federal authorities allege that the Tsarnaev brothers planted two bombs near the finish line of the Boston Marathon on April 15. The explosions killed three people and injured more than 260 others.

Four days later, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who survived a shootout with police during which Tamerlan Tsarnaev was killed, was captured following a daylong manhunt in the Boston suburb of Watertown.

How Much Marvel-ous Money Did RDJ Make?

IRON MAN 3

It’s a little shocking that Johnny Depp’s not on this list, but Forbes has issued their rundown of the highest-paid actors in Hollywood and none other than Tony Stark himself, Robert Downey Jr., tops the bunch with $75 million.

Yes, you read that right. $75 million. Not bad for a guy who was essentially unemployable as a leading man in movies until Iron Man opened in 2008.

Murphy Joins Dark Knight DP's Transcendence

Add Cillian Murphy to the list of talent joining Wally Pfister’s Transcendence, which already has Johnny Depp, Paul Bettany, Kate Mara, Rebecca Hall and Morgan Freeman onboard.

Murphy’s involvement isn’t too surprising. The actor played Dr. Jonathan Crane (aka Scarecrow) in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy, all of which were shot by Pfister. Transcendence will mark the DP‘s directorial debut.

Why Guillermo del Toro's 'Pacific Rim' will be a bigger hit if summer 2013 is an artistic failure

By Scott Mendelson, Contributor

As I mentioned last week, the success of Guillermo del Toro’s large-scale monsters vs. robots action tale Pacific Rim is at least partially predicated on how well-received the previous two months of summer films happen to be.  This summer will mark the ten year anniversary of Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl.  As most of you know, the Disney pirate adventure was a surprise of sorts, both in terms of its unexpected quality and its huge financial success.  The film was a proverbial dark horse of summer 2003, a film based on pirates (box office poison!) starring Johnny Depp (usually box office poison way back when) and based on a theme park ride.  On paper, the $130 million film was seemingly a recipe for disaster.  But two things happened that summer.  Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl was very good and a large portion of the May/June summer releases were not.  As such, by early July, summer movie audiences were primed for a would-be tentpole that actually delivered the goods.  Gore Verbinski‘s pirate adventure was the one we were waiting for, and audiences responded accordingly with a $73 million five-day opening and a $303 million final domestic total.

2013 Kids Choice Awards Honor Kristen Stewart, One Direction

By The Huffington Post News Editors

LOS ANGELES, March 23 (Reuters) – Green slime spewed furiously at the Kids Choice Awards on Saturday, where “Twilight Saga” star Kristen Stewart and British boy band One Direction won two awards apiece.
Stewart, 22, escaped the slime but plunged her hands into the green goo, saying she “felt like I have finally found my kindergartner self,” as she accepted trophies for movie actress and favorite female butt kicker.
Organizers said more than 350 million votes were cast online in more than 20 categories, spanning film, television, books, music and sport for the stunt-filled annual award show on youth channel Nickelodeon.
Hosted by “Transformers” actor Josh Duhamel, who is married to singer Fergie, the show in Los Angeles featured performances by Pitbull and Christina Aguilera, as well as Ke$ha.
Johnny Depp and Katy Perry accepted orange blimp-shaped trophies for favorite female singer and movie actor respectively and both stars had words of wisdom for the audience of kids and young teens.
“This is such a cool award … stay safe, stay in school, don’t do drugs,” Perry told them. Depp said he was “truly honored and humbled. Thank you for what you are, which is the future.”
Selena Gomez, 20, the ex-girlfriend of pop star Justin Bieber, took the female TV actress award for her Disney Channel series “Wizards of Waverly Place,” even though the show came to an end more than a year ago.
Bieber, who is on tour in Europe, was voted favorite male singer and was among several stars who did not make it to accept their award in person.
No-shows included One Direction, who are also on tour and who won for favorite music group and song for “What Makes You Beautiful,” “X Factor” judge Simon Cowell (favorite villain), and Ross Lynch, 17, who was named favorite TV actor for Disney Channel’s pop star series “Austin & Ally.”
Sandra Bullock, Neil Patrick Harris, Duhamel, Pitbull, Nick Cannon, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and dozens of audience members got covered in slime gushing out …read more

Iron Man 3's Hall Joins Depp-Nolan Sci-Fi Film

Alcon Entertainment announced today that Iron Man 3’s Rebecca Hall has joined the cast of Transcendence, the upcoming sci-fi film starring Johnny Depp and executive produced by Christopher Nolan.

Hall and Nolan previously worked together on The Prestige.

Transcendence marks the directorial debut of Oscar-winning cinematographer Wally Pfister (Nolan’s TDK trilogy, Inception). While the official release wouldn’t divulge plot details, prior reports claim Depp plays a scientist who is reportedly working on a programming code for the world’s first fully self-aware computer. Hall’s character has previously been described as both a scientist and Depp’s wife.

Filming begins this April in Los Angeles. Paul Bettany, who’ll soon reprise his role as the voice of Jarvis in Iron Man 3, also recently joined the cast.

3 killed in helicopter crash on set of reality TV show in California

Three people were killed Sunday in a pre-dawn helicopter crash in a rural area of northern Los Angeles County while filming for a new reality TV show for the Discovery Channel.

The copter crashed at about 3:40 a.m. at the popular filming location of Polsa Rosa Ranch in the city of Acton, Los Angeles County Fire dispatcher Robert Diaz said.

All three people aboard died, Diaz said. Their names weren’t immediately released.

The show, listed on a filming permit as an untitled military-theme TV program, had not yet been aired or announced by Discovery, channel spokeswoman Laurie Goldberg said.

“A production company was shooting a show for Discovery Channel when this tragic accident occurred,” the station said in a statement. “We are all cooperating fully with authorities. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families.”

The show’s production company, Eyeworks USA, best known for creating NBC’s “The Biggest Loser,” also issued a statement expressing sympathies to the victim’s families and saying they were cooperating with authorities.

The company had been approved to use a helicopter for a reality TV show shooting at the ranch from Saturday afternoon until Sunday morning, said Philip Sokoloski, a spokesman for FilmLA, which processes filming permits for location shootings in the Los Angeles region.

Records also showed Crossbow Helicopters received approval to participate in filming from the Federal Aviation Administration.

“We wouldn’t have referenced helicopter activity if we didn’t already have pre-approval from the FAA,” Sokoloski said.

The cause and other circumstances surrounding the crash are still unknown, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Allen Kenitzer said.

Television footage showed mangled wreckage in a rugged canyon area near Soledad Canyon Road.

According to its website, Polsa Rosa is a “movie ranch” where film crews can utilize a variety of terrains as well as two airstrips. The ranch, according to the Internet Movie Database, was used in “Windtalkers” and last year’s remake of “Red Dawn.”

It was the site of another entertainment industry death in September, when a 48-year-old crew member died of an apparent heart attack while underwater in scuba gear on the set of the upcoming Johnny Depp film “The Lone Ranger”

Sunday’s wreck was also just 25 miles from a similar rural spot in Santa Clarita where actor Vic Morrow and two children were killed in another helicopter crash while filming the “Twilight Zone” movie in 1982.

That crash brought changes in production restrictions and led to producer John Landis and four others being charged with involuntary manslaughter. All were acquitted.

Plot details on the upcoming sci-fi film Transcendence, starring Johnny Depp, keep coming to light despite executive producer Christopher Nolan‘s penchant for secrecy. Nolan’s longtime cinematographer Wally Pfister will make his feature directing debut on the Warner Bros/Alcon production, which aims to film this spring.

Connecting the Tarantino Universe

Some directors are so unique, you can flip to one of their films out of the blue and instinctively know who made it. Sometimes it’s down to distinctive dialogue; other times it’s visual flair you identify; and if Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter are starring, there are no prizes for guessing you’re watching a Tim Burton movie. Quentin Tarantino, however, has spent the 20 years between Reservoir Dogs and Django Unchained crafting an intricate, instantly recognisable movie universe – one which boasts a family tree of miscreants that overlap between movies in weird and wonderful ways.

These connections – however subtle they may be – bear little effect on the plots of Tarantino’s movies. Instead, they’re like Easter Eggs that reward observant onlookers: in-jokes that might mean nothing to us, but mean the world to their creator. They say a good tactic in screenwriting is to imagine a back story for everyone, including the incidental characters. You suspect Quentin Tarantino could easily write a two-part epic for even his most ancillary players.
