More Plot Details on Transcendence

Plot details on the upcoming sci-fi film Transcendence, starring Johnny Depp, keep coming to light despite executive producer Christopher Nolan‘s penchant for secrecy. Nolan’s longtime cinematographer Wally Pfister will make his feature directing debut on the Warner Bros/Alcon production, which aims to film this spring.

TheWrap provides the most detailed (i.e. SPOILERISH) account yet so comsider yourself duly warned:

“According to the summary, a group of anti-technology terrorists assassinate Will, and Evelyn uploads his brain into a prototype supercomputer. Although she at first finds that the experiment seems to have gone wrong, before long, Evelyn finds Will responding in computer form.

Batman Beyond Movie Musings

No, there isn’t a Batman Beyond live-action movie in development — not anymore as far as we know — but one person who’d be keen on seeing one is none other than Michael E. Uslan, the executive producer of all the Batman movies from Tim Burton‘s through Christopher Nolan‘s.

According to Batman-on-Film, Uslan attended a panel discussion before this week’s world premiere of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 2 in New York City during which time he was asked about Batman’s big screen future.

The Man Who Hates Chris Nolan

While we know better than to give trolls the attention they deserve, this one film fan’s impassioned rant against Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan and praising of Batman & Robin’s Joel Schumacher is just too loopy and funny not to share with you. Be advised of strong language throughout the video below:

Man of Steel is "Movie That The World Needs Right Now" Says Screenwriter

Screenwriter David S. Goyer has been discussing the challenges involved in bringing Superman back to the big-screen with this summer’s Man of Steel.

Speaking to Access Hollywood at the launch of his new TV series Da Vinci’s Demons, Goyer explained that writing Man of Steel was more challenging than his work on Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy.

“I never thought I’d be doing a Superman film,” he explained. “The only possible way to top myself or ourselves on Batman is to tackle Superman who’s the sort of granddaddy of all the superheroes. He’s trickier. It’s easier doing a dark character who doesn’t have any superpowers, but I’m really proud of what we’ve done and I can’t wait for people to see it.”

Screenwriter David Goyer: From Blade to Man of Steel

David Goyer has probably written more comic book adaptations than any other screenwriter, including the Blade trilogy and his work with Christopher Nolan and Jonathan Nolan on the Dark Knight trilogy. That work will continue with Goyer’s script for this coming summer’s Man of Steel, produced by Christopher Nolan and directed by Zack Snyder.

This weekend, I spoke to Goyer at the TCA (Television Critics Association) press tour about his new TV series for Starz, Da Vinci’s Demons. During our conversation (look for the portion about his series before the show’s April premiere), I also spoke with Goyer a bit about Man of Steel – a movie that is currently cloaked in a lot of secrecy. We also talked about the path of the modern dramatic comic book movie, which can be tracked to 1998’s Blade, which not only showed that even a relatively obscure Marvel character could find box office success but was a huge shift tonally in an era that had been bringing us movies like Batman & Robin and Steel.

Why 2013's Superhero Movies Have a Lot to Prove

For superhero movies, 2012 was a year championed by culminations. The release of Marvel’s The Avengers brought Phase 1 of Marvel’s movie plans to a head and in turn created the standout box-office success of the year. The conclusion of Christopher Nolan’s Batman saga, The Dark Knight Rises, similarly brought the better half of a decade of Batman to a close. There was some new stuff in there that sort of got lost in the shuffle – The Amazing Spider-Man did well enough but nowhere near Avengers or Batman money. John Carter disappointed financially. Most depressingly, Dredd tanked miserably.

While 2012 could be considered the pinnacle of the last decade of comic book movies – perhaps both financially and creatively – it’s 2013 that will give way to the next phase of the comic adaptation phenomenon. There are plenty of familiar comic book characters returning to the big screen this summer, but most have a great deal to prove, and I’m beyond excited to see what this year can offer in the way of rebuilding previously powerful franchises to their former glory.

Cronenberg Addresses Nolan and TDKR Controversy

We had the opportunity to speak with director David Cronenberg recently for the DVD and Blu-ray release of his latest film, Cosmopolis. During the course of our conversation we touched on some of the controversy surrounding his comments on comic book movies and Christopher Nolan‘s Batman franchise/The Dark Knight Rises in particular. Take a look at that portion of our exchang below and read the full interview here.

IGN: You’ve referred to the moments between Paul Giamatti’s character and Robert Pattinson’s in Cosmopolis as being the essence of cinema, which you said is just someone talking into a camera, if they’re given a good story and dialogue. That kind of raises the question: what is the purpose of cinema? People are talking about making the “arthouse” blockbuster these days, and many people have said that Christopher Nolan is a modern-day auteur in that, it appears that he has found a way to express his own vision within the framework of a massive franchise, or big budgeted movie. You’ve very notably said that you don’t see it that way.

Who Inspired TDKR’s Bruce Wayne?

Lee Smith, editor of The Dark Knight Rises, says the reclusive Bruce Wayne depicted in that film was influenced by a Howard Hughes biopic that director Christopher Nolan never got to make.
In a chat with Flickering Myth (via The Playlist), Smith confirmed the speculation, saying, “There are a lot of similarities in that.  He did work on a script at the same time the one with Leonardo Continue reading…

Christopher Nolan Talks Man of Steel

The Dark Knight Rises director Christopher Nolan has been out and about doing some press for the Blu-ray release of his final Bat film, and also attending some Oscar luncheons (could TDKR get a Best Picture nomination? Should it?). And along the way, he’s been talking a bit about the upcoming Man of Steel, which he executive-produced.
In a chat with The Playlist, Nolan was pretty evasive regarding whether or not he might get involved in any other superhero movies (including Justice League) in the future. But he did provide some scraps of Superman info, saying that Man of Steel won’t be terribly similar to his Batman films.

The Dark Knight Rises Blu-ray Review

It’s truly the end of an era as the final film in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy hits Blu-ray just in time for the holiday season. I’ll say up front that I loved this movie and wholeheartedly agree with the official IGN review from the film’s release. It’s got some structural problems that aren’t befitting of the typically tight filmmaking of Nolan, but in the end the thematic integrity, strong character dynamics, and gorgeous cinematography make up the difference in spades.
While the movie’s Blu-ray release isn’t an all-encompassing collection of great special features that celebrate the trilogy’s conclusion, it’s still a solid purchase that should please most Nolan Bat-fans.
