Avery Molek, 6-Year-Old Drumming Prodigy, Performs ‘Hot For Teacher’ (VIDEO)

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Meet Avery Molek, a 6-year-old drummer who’s currently experiencing his 15 minutes of YouTube fame. In a video making the rounds online this week, the tiny drummer is shown shredding his way through Van Halen’s “Hot For Teacher,” barely missing a beat as he plays the classic song like a pro.

Molek has been playing the drums since he was four years old and in just two years he’s played over 15 shows spanning four different states, wowing crowds with his prodigious love of Kiss and other hard rock bands. According to his Facebook, the munchkin musician has also embarked on a tour in his homestate of Pennsylvania. He’s already giving Mr. Alex Van Halen a run for his money!

Although we are loving Molek’s intense drumming session, we can’t help but think his song choice is a little, erm, mature for his age. We bet the first grader’s elementary school teacher was sufficiently weirded out by the viral ode to education. Scroll through the slideshow of more child prodigies below and let us know your thoughts on the young drummer in the comments.

Egyptian mosque turned into house of torture for Christians after Muslim Brotherhood protest

Islamic hard-liners stormed a mosque in suburban Cairo, turning it into torture chamber for Christians who had been demonstrating against the ruling Muslim Brotherhood in the latest case of violent persecution that experts fear will only get worse.

Such stories have become increasingly common as tensions between Egypt‘s Muslims and Copts mount, but in the latest case, mosque officials corroborated much of the account and even filed a police report. Demonstrators say they were taken from the Muslim Brotherhood headquarters in suburban Cairo to a nearby mosque on Friday and tortured for hours by hard-line militia members.

“They accompanied me to one of the mosques in the area and I discovered the mosque was being used to imprison demonstrators and torture them,” Amir Ayad, a Coptic who has been a vocal protester against the regime, told MidEast Christian News from a hospital bed.

Ayad said he was beaten for hours with sticks before being left for dead on a roadside. Amir’s brother, Ezzat Ayad, said he received an anonymous phone call at 3 a.m. Saturday, with the caller saying his brother had been found near death and had been taken to the ambulance.

“He underwent radiation treatment that proved that he suffered a fracture in the bottom of his skull, a fracture in his left arm, a bleeding in the right eye, and birdshot injuries,” Ezzat Ayad said.

Officials at the Bilal ibn Rabah Mosque said radical militias stormed the building, in the Cairo suburb of Moqattam, after Friday prayers.

“[We] deeply regret what has happened and apologize to the people of Moqattam,” mosque officials said in a statement, adding that “they had lost control over the mosque at the time.”

The statement also “denounced and condemned the violence and involving mosques in political conflicts.”

The latest crackdown is further confirmation that the Muslim Brotherhood‘s most hard-line elements are consolidating control in Egypt, according to Shaul Gabbay, a professor of international studies at the University of Denver.

“It will only get worse,” said Gabbay. “This has been a longstanding conflict, but now that the Muslim Brotherhood is in power, it is moving forward to implement its ideology – which is that Christians are supposed to become Muslims.

“There is no longer anything to hold them back,” he continued. “The floodgates are open.”

Gabbay said the violent militias that allegedly tortured Ayad work hand-in-hand with police and may, in fact, be beyond the control of increasingly unpopular President Mohammed Morsi. While he may benefit from roving bands that attack demonstrators, they also undermine his claim of being a legitimate leader.

“Egyptian society is split over the Morsi regime, and it is not just a Coptic-Muslim split,” Gabbay said. “The less conservative elements of the Muslim society are increasingly uneasy with the Muslim Brotherhood. The Christian Copts are an easy target, but they are not alone in their mistrust of the Brotherhood.”

Experts agreed that the Copts, who comprise roughly 10 percent of the nation’s 83 million people, are not alone in their opposition to the Muslim Brotherhood, which took power …read more

Remarks by the First Lady at Fisher House Family Easter Event

By The White House

Maryland Fisher House IV
Bethesda, Maryland

1:25 P.M. EDT

MRS. OBAMA: Thank you, Crystal. It's so good to be back. It's good to see you guys. Are you having fun?

CHILDREN: Yes.

MRS. OBAMA: Are you ready for a little more fun? I'm coming to engage in the fun with you. Are you ready? Are you ready to show me how to make some stuff?

This is my second time here at Fisher House right around the Easter holidays, but it's not my second time, period. I mean, the Fisher Houses, as you all know, are just so important to families who are recuperating. They're doing some great stuff. As you can see, the houses are beautiful. And all around the country, they are as beautiful and as welcoming and as comforting as you guys are experiencing here.

That’s one of the reasons why we are so supportive of all the efforts that the Fisher Houses do. And we're grateful to the Fisher family — Crystal, who is here on behalf of her family — because it wouldn’t happen without them. So I like to come and hang out, number one, to bring cookies. Anybody like cookies here? I'm not sure if we haven't any cookie fans. (Laughter.) Just checking.

And one other thing I come bearing. We do this really cool thing at the White House around Easter every year. It's called our Easter Egg Roll. Have you guys heard of the Easter Egg Roll? We do it in the backyard of the White House on the South Lawn, and there are thousands of people who come. And we've got great entertainment, bands playing. We've got athletes who come, we've got Easter bunnies, and characters, and face painting, and bands playing, and lots of running right on the South Lawn. Does that sound fun?

CHILDREN: Yes.

MRS. OBAMA: I brought tickets for all of you to come. So that’s the other thing I bring. (Applause.) So the Monday after Easter, you guys are invited to my house to hang out, okay?

I have one last surprise for you guys. I brought a friend. Bo!

(Bo walks into the room.)

I brought Bo. Bo came to see you guys. Okay, so first I'm going to check out — I'm going to come around to the tables. If you don’t like dogs, just let me know.

Bo is a sweetheart, but he's big; he's bigger than some kids realize. (Laughter.) So it takes a little second, but that’s all he is, is big. He's really a big baby. He's a big baby. He …read more

ATLANTA–(BUSINESS WIRE)– There’s no better time than the fury of NCAA® March Madness® for Coke Zero to introduce the next iteration of its Enjoy Everything campaign. Titled, “It’s Not Your Fault,” Coke Zero debuts its new integrated marketing campaign during NCAA® championships.

The campaign takes a lighthearted and comedic approach to say that with Coke Zero you can Enjoy Everything in life. “It’s Not Your Fault” also celebrates guys-being-guys. The Enjoy Everything campaign has evolved on the notion of owning quintessential guy moments of bonding and camaraderie, from sports and entertainment to humor, gaming and music.

“We’re talking to men more overtly with ‘It’s Not Your Fault’,” said Pio Schunker, SVP and Head of Integrated Marketing Communications, North America Group. “We’re positioning Coke Zero as a defender and celebrator of guy enjoyment.”

The new campaign rolls out during NCAA® March Madness® debuting a 30-second television advertisement entitled “Bracket.” “Video Game” will follow as another 30-second television commercial and digital content will take center-stage with a seven part video series. The 360 degree integrated marketing campaign will pulse throughout the year and amplify with assets like football and NASCAR.

Coke Zero has experienced quarter after quarter growth and success, and we hope to see this campaign continue the momentum. ‘It’s Not Your Fault’ is launching in a big way through universal guy assets like NCAA® March Madness® and a co-branded promotional spot with CONAN,” said Andy McMillin, VP, Coke Trademark, North America Group. “Coke Zero brand attributes are well established, now it’s time for the brand to make the next big leap to connect with its drinkers. The brand definitely is evolving.”

The State of FM Rock/Alt Radio

By Michele Catalano, Contributor

When the radio station at 101.9FM in New York went from rock/alternative to sports talk last fall, it was yet another blow to the New York rock radio market. Like the demise of KROCK before it, the loss of WEMF meant the New York metro area once again had no venue for rock/alt radio. There are still classic rock stations like Q104 and WBAB, but no station presenting promising new bands or alternative music. …read more

Argentina blends devotion and marketing over Pope

From slum chapels to Buenos Aires‘ imposing cathedral, Argentines celebrated their pope in Sunday Masses.

While the faithful prayed, vendors sold papal memorabilia and workers installed huge screens in the capital’s central Plaza de Mayo in preparation for an all-night vigil ahead of Francis’ formal installation ceremony, which will begin before dawn Tuesday Argentina time.

Mass in the slums began earlier and seemed more intimate. At the Villa 21-24, one of the capital city’s most dangerous slums, many recalled how as an archbishop, Jorge Mario Bergoglio blessed their tiny Caacupe Virgin of the Miracles chapel.

Not everyone could fit inside its yellow walls with painted saints and many stood outside during the vigil. Blanca Franco, a 58-year-old housewife, listened and shed some tears.

“I have feelings in my heart that only God knows,” Franco said. “I’m happy about the appointment of our archbishop.”

Nearby, Marcos Manuel Solar, a 28-year-old former drug addict, smiled widely as he told passers-by that he had received the rite of confirmation from the pope himself. Solar, who works at a soup kitchen, said he kicked the habit through a rehab program funded by the church.

In the heart of Buenos Aires, the mood was festive.

Vendors outside the Cathedral sold pins, calendars and posters with the image of Francis. The flag of the Vatican City seemed to be the most popular sales item.

Uma Eiras, a 10-year-old student, waved a tiny one with its two white-and-gold vertical bands and said she would hang it in her room.

There seemed not to be a single pew empty inside the giant national Cathedral and many followed the Mass on large screens across the street.

Sabina Podrez, a 39-year-old scrivener, said she attended the Mass out of hope that Argentina and the world will change under a new pope.

“We were going to work disheartened, with insecurity,” Podrez said. “This is a breath of fresh air.”

Argentine Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio named new pope

Argentine Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio was elected by his peers Wednesday as the new pope, becoming the first pontiff from the Americas.

He chose the name Francis, drawing connections to the humble 13th-century saint who saw his calling as trying to rebuild the church in a time of turmoil.

As the long-time archbishop of Buenos Aires, Francis has spent nearly his entire career at home in Argentina, overseeing churches and shoe-leather priests. In choosing a 76-year-old pope, the cardinals clearly decided that they didn’t need a vigorous, young pope who would reign for decades but rather a seasoned, popular and humble pastor who would draw followers to the faith and help rebuild a church stained by scandal.

Groups of supporters waved Argentine flags in St. Peter’s Square as Francis, wearing simple white robes, made his first public appearance as pope.

Chants of “Long live the pope!” arose from the throngs of faithful, many with tears in their eyes. Crowds went wild as the Vatican and Italian military bands marched through the square and up the steps of the basilica, followed by Swiss Guards in silver helmets and full regalia.

Francis appeared on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica just after a church official announced “Habemus Papum” — “We have a pope” — and gave Bergoglio’s name in Latin.

“Ladies and Gentlemen, good evening,” he said to wild cheers before making a reference to his roots in Latin America, which accounts for about 40 percent of the world’s Roman Catholics.

Francis asked for prayers for himself, and for retired Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, whose surprising resignation paved the way for the conclave that brought the first Jesuit to the papacy.

“You know that the work of the conclave is to give a bishop to Rome,” Francis said. “It seems as if my brother cardinals went to find him from the end of the earth. Thank you for the welcome.”

In one of his first acts as pope, Francis on Thursday morning planned to visit Benedict at the papal retreat in Castel Gandolfo south of Rome.

American Cardinal Timothy Dolan said Wednesday night at the North American College, the U.S. seminary in Rome, that Francis told fellow cardinals following the conclave that made him pope: “Tomorrow morning, I’m going to visit Benedict.”

The visit is significant because Benedict’s resignation has raised concerns about potential power conflicts emerging from the peculiar situation of having a reigning pope and a retired one.

Bergoglio has shown a keen political sensibility as well as the kind of self-effacing humility that fellow cardinals value highly, according to his official biographer, Sergio Rubin. He showed that humility on Wednesday, saying that before he blessed the crowd he wanted their prayers for him and bowed his head.

“Good night, and have a good rest,” he said before going back into the palace.

In a lifetime of teaching and leading priests in Latin America, which has the largest share of the world’s Catholics, Francis has been known for modernizing an Argentine church that had been among the most conservative in Latin America.

Hot Chip’s U.S. Tour Includes Ultra, Coachella And Will Feature Old Gems

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Hot Chip is returning to the United States for a string of dates in support of “In Our Heads,” the well-received album the band released in June of last year.

The English indie-electro quintet will start their American journey at the Ultra Music Festival, the Coachella of dance music (later, in April, they’ll also perform at Coachella itself). But though they’re seeing quite a few bookings at dance festivals, Hot Chip‘s Alexis Taylor tells The Huffington Post the band isn’t too concerned about the fist-pumping audience.

“I think people know what to expect when they come to see Hot Chip,” he said in a phone interview from the band’s rehearsal space in London. “So we still get booked, but we may seem a bit more like a live band by comparison, whereas a few years back we were just doing our own thing and some other bands were doing something similar.”

Utah Fights For 2nd Amendment…Sort Of

By Doug Book

world mexguns full 6328 Utah Fights for 2nd Amendment…Sort Of

Can state lawmakers legally fine federal officials, even toss them in jail should they attempt to impose Barack Obama’s agenda of gun bans and confiscation on the American people?

Many remember video of lawless New Orleans police as they traveled door to door in the aftermath of Katrina, throwing law abiding citizens to the ground, confiscating their firearms and rendering individuals defenseless at a time when self-defense was all that would separate honest citizens from roving bands of thugs and looters. Such was the outrage of the American public that one year later, the State of Louisiana joined federal lawmakers in banning the confiscation of firearms during declared “emergencies.”

Today, more than a dozen states have “…proposed legislation to either jail federal officials who violate the second amendment or to nullify federal laws to control guns within state borders.” The list of states joining these efforts continues to grow.

But in Utah of all places, the Republican Chair of the House Judiciary Committee refused to allow such legislation to go forward. HB 114 was twice “dropped from the agenda” by chairman Kay McIff as he expressed concern that the “2nd Amendment Preservation Act” might be unconstitutional.

The preamble of the Act “…provides that any federal action that attempts to impose limitations on firearms contrary to the Second Amendment of the Constitution of the United States, or the Constitution or laws of the State of Utah, is unenforceable in this state.” Seems pretty straightforward—no unconstitutional gun laws will be enforced in Utah! But House legislative staff convinced McIff that the Constitution’s Supremacy Clause must automatically render any such statute unconstitutional.

Had the timid Mclff not thrown in the towel before the battle was engaged he might have understood that only “th[e] Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in pursuance thereof… shall be the supreme law of the land.”

In short, only laws which are made consistent with the powers specially granted the government in the Constitution may be considered “supreme” and therefore take precedence over state statute. Federal laws which infringe on the right to keep and bear arms are clearly not “made in pursuance of” a Constitution which states that the right to keep and bear arms shall NOT be infringed! Obviously such legislation is unconstitutional on its face and may play no part in the Supremacy Clause.

Well on Friday, the Republican committee chair at last permitted a vote on HB 114 and to no one’s surprise it passed 49-17. The Act now travels to the state senate where Republican Senate President Wayne Neiderhauser promises “…to be very cautious with the bill.”

Prior to allowing Friday’s House vote, Kay McIff made it clear he was loathe to waste money fighting for the 2nd Amendment rights of Utah residents. After all, a suit by the Obama Regime would make for an expensive battle in court. And now, another Republican leader pledges “caution.”

The people of Utah turned out in droves to offer …read more

Patrick Stump Wants You To Stop Hating On Nickelback: Fall Out Boy Singer Addresses Hate Culture

By The Huffington Post News Editors

In a lengthy blog post, Fall Out Boy frontman Patrick Stump takes a moment to posit why bands including Nickelback, Creed and Limp Bizkit have become “ubiquitously hate-able.”

It’s true that you’d be hard-pressed to find someone openly professing their love for any of those bands at the risk of enduring ridicule, but it’s that such hate has become culturally acceptable, if not demanded, which Stump finds rather troubling:

“For some reason, here I am crippled by a vague and probably unwarranted desire not to appear to be a fan of Nickelback and Dane Cook,” he writes. “That’s sad. In this generation of blazing wi-fi and scathing tweets, I think it’s very easy to lose sight of anyone else’s opinion. We’re so busy broadcasting our latest cultural disdain that we scantly notice anything we enjoy.”

Hermès Fall 2013

By Justin Fenner

The library at Lycee Henri IV, one of the most prestigious high schools in Paris, was transformed into a runway for Hermes‘s Fall 2013 show. Leather chairs and benches were arranged into rows, and more than one attendee commented on how comfortable the seating assignments were.

The clothes looked plenty cozy, too. Christophe Lemaire sent a variety of great coats down the runway, including a few varietals in fur, and one with wide bands of brown, red, gray, and black. Of course, if you’re going to show your wares in a school, they have to be smart. So Lemaire‘s offering was heavy on well-tailored suiting separates, crisp shirts, and functional dresses, but it was surprisingly low on bags. Perhaps the designer – and the house – want customers to study the clothing as closely as they do the accessories.

ON Semiconductor Launches Tunable RF Components for Smaller, Thinner Smartphones with Reliable Antenna Performance

Tunable RF Components allow smaller volume antennas, reduced power consumption and support increasing mobile data demands in the latest generation of smartphones

PHOENIX–(BUSINESS WIRE)– ON Semiconductor (Nasdaq: ONNN), driving energy efficient innovations, has introduced a new family of Tunable RF Components (TRFC) that address the design challenges faced by engineers developing the latest generation smartphones. The new devices optimally combine tuning range, RF quality factor (Q) and frequency operation, providing a superior solution to existing fixed approaches.

End-user demand for smaller, thinner handsets challenges designers to reduce antenna volume without impacting performance. At the same time, the rapid increase in demand for mobile data means that carriers worldwide are increasing the number of bands that a smartphone must cover. ON Semiconductor’s new TCP-30xx family of low insertion loss Passive Tunable Integrated Circuits (PTICs) and TCC-103 PTIC Controller IC allow performance to be tuned and optimized to counter lower antenna volume and increased frequency coverage requirements. They also help overcome head- and hand-effect problems.

With a 4:1 tuning range and capacitance values from 1.2 picofarad (pF) to 8.2 pF, the TCP-30xx PTIC series is offered in WLCSP and QFN package styles and can be used to replace traditional “fixed-match” devices. ON Semiconductor’s PTICs also allow for a more efficient use of the smartphone’s power amplifier to reduce the current drain and help extend handset battery life. A three-times improvement in data rates in marginal coverage areas can be achieved with a significant reduction in dropped or missed calls.

Designed to work in conjunction with the company’s PTICs, a new PTIC Control IC is also available. The TCC-103 is a high-voltage digital-to-analog IC that provides control and bias in a tunable solution and is fully compliant with the timing needs of cellular and other wireless system requirements. The low-power IC features an integrated boost converter with three programmable outputs (up to 24 V) and an interface that allows independent control of multiple tuning elements from a single MIPI/SPI bus element. It is housed in a WLCSP package for stand-alone or module integration.

ON Semiconductor’s proven expertise and technology in TRFCs are underlined by over 10 million units shipped to date, a worldwide field application team to support customer designs, and design tools that help speed and simplify the optimization of antenna circuits.
