Report: GM execs fired over fraudulent India emissions testing

By Jonathon Ramsey

Chevy Tavera Neo3 - front three-quarter view

Filed under:

General Motors hadn’t had a recall in India since 1995. That changed when it was discovered that certain employees were playing tricks with local emissions testing in order to ensure passing grades for engines. More than ten GM Powertrain employees in India and the US have been let go over the ensuing emissions flap, including Sam Winegarden, VP of global engine engineering, a man who has been with the company since 1969, leading development of some marquee powerplants.

According to Automotive News, an internal investigation revealed that employees “violated testing procedures,” sometimes swapping specially prepared low-emissions engines during testing regimes for the Chevrolet Tavera SUV equipped with the 2.0-liter and 2.5-liter engines. Employees were also manipulating weights in order to get vehicles placed into different emissions categories. The discovery has led to GM recall the 114,000 Taveras produced over an eight-year period and halting their production and sale.

The Economic Times of India reports that the issue is due to “a faulty component.” GM has developed a solution to the issue, and once it is validated in testing and approved by the Indian authorities, the recalled vehicles will be fixed at dealers and production will resume.

Own Your Success: Why Modesty Isn't The Best Policy

Ashes Cricket 2013 Delayed to November

Ashes_2013

Ashes Cricket 2013 has been delayed to November, as publisher 505 Games feels the current iteration of the game isn’t good enough.

The title, which was originally due to release on June 21 but was delayed, will now be released in time for the second Ashes series set to take place in Australia later this year.

505’s senior VP of global brand and marketing Tim Woodley explained, “It is hugely disappointing that 505 Games has had to make this announcement today. We all had high hopes of bringing out a stellar cricket game during the first leg of this unprecedented Ashes year. But the fact of the matter is, we took a long hard look at the game as it stands and decided it simply wasn’t good enough in its current state. It was simply not worthy of the Ashes name.

Mercedes-Benz Creates Ultra-Luxurious, Ultra-Cool Golf Cart Concept

By Alexander Stoklosa

Mercedes-Benz Vision Golf Cart Concept

It’s not entirely clear why, but Mercedes-Benz—“the official patron of the PGA tour” and sponsor of pro golfer Adam Scott’s right breast—recently held a global contest that involved its fans submitting ideas for the ultimate golf cart. The results came in, were compiled, and apparently the overwhelming consensus among the entries was that Mercedes-leaning golfers yearn for a cart that rivals their car in terms of luxury. The three-pointed star guys presented the criteria to its designers in Carlsbad, California, who churned out the Vision Golf Cart concept you see here. It debuted it at this year’s British Open championship.

Loaded to the gills with luxury features, the Vision cart is less “the Mercedes-Benz of golf carts” and more a Benz car that happens to look like a golf cart from Tron. As Gordon Wagoner, Benz’s VP of design, puts it, “Why not [treat] a golf cart like a car, and [make] it a ‘golf car?’ ” Well, for starters, Volkswagen already makes a ‘Golf car,’ but we suppose that integrating carlike attributes into the ultimate golf cart makes some sense. Still, we’re struggling to see why Benz needed to design the Vision at all when a GLK-class can hold some clubs and seems capable of tackling a grass field.

Silly design brief aside, the all-electric Vision Golf Cart is an impressive bit of fantasy. Users can plug the Vision in to charge it, or it can be juiced up via the roof-mounted solar array—likely at a much slower, cloud-dependent pace. Electric hub motors mounted provide power. Inside, you won’t find a steering wheel or pedals; instead, a central joystick controls the vehicle. This is both bad and good, because it allows either front passenger to control the Vision. A series of touch-screen displays controls the air-conditioning and infotainment systems—for staying cool while streaming Caddyshack, natch—and the vehicle also packs heated and ventilated seats and Benz’s Airscarf neck-warmer technology. A head-up display is integrated into the windshield and can show golf course layouts, scores, and weather info.

A USB iPod/iPad dock lets occupants use their devices to play music through the Vision’s speakers, while a Bluetooth connection ensures captains of industry can still bark orders at their subordinates while away from the office. Golf-specific touches include a cooler—the beer is up to you—as well as cooled or heated cup holders. For golfers who aren’t so good at golfing, there’s an emergency “fore” button that, when pressed, sends a warning signal “to golf carts within the danger zone.” It isn’t clear how that zone is determined, or how Mercedes expects folks to override their instinctual pride and dignity to press that button. Since sometimes it rains on golf courses, rain-sensing automatic windshield wipers are included, as is a retractable lightning rod that is intended to be better at attracting electricity than nearby golfers’ clubs. Snap-on, lightweight doors can be deployed to further battle the elements.

Report: BMW, Mini aim to sell million cars off new FWD platform

By Jonathon Ramsey

Filed under:

Mini sold 301,526 cars in 2012; BMW sold 1.54 million of its own models. According to a piece in Autocar, analysts say the coming UKL1 platform that will form the skeleton of the third-generation Mini Cooper and coming front-wheel drive BMW 1 Series could be responsible for “more than 900,000 cars per year” all by itself.

That sale fire is fueled by the UKL1 wearing up to twenty-three bodies in total between the two brands, 11 for Mini and 12 for BMW, rendering hatchbacks, sedans, coupes, convertibles, wagons, crossovers and people-haulers from about 12.5 feet to 14.5 feet. In April the VP of Mini USA said we might find some current models don’t make it to a next generation, but a graphic accompanying the Autocar story has them all there. If it’s correct, then those 23 models will only base model lines and don’t account for different engines and four-wheel-drive options for each model.

The big changes that would perhaps mean big sales for the Mini line are a five-door hatch with two smaller rear doors for children, the sedan talked about last year for Asian markets and an MPV perhaps wearing the “Traveler” name that could send the Countryman in a more SUV-like direction.

CSOFT Goes For A Soft Touch In Scaling Outside China

By Rebecca Fannin, Contributor

One of the more interesting aspects of my role covering innovation trends in emerging markets is the opportunity to see companies close-up as they scale. Such was my recent experience attending a summit held by CSOFT International in Beijing and Sanya, the Hawaii of China. CSOFT was celebrating its 10th anniversary with a two-day program of experts speaking about globalization trends in the so-called localization business in which it operates. One clear takeaway? I am sure that CSOFT would never have become a profitable player in this market without the visionary leadership of its very determined president and CEO, Shunee Yee (pictured with me). Sounding a bit like Alibaba’s Jack Ma, Shunee says “the sky’s the limit” on her startup’s potential, which she envisions becoming a $1 billion business.  The company’s nifty-looking headquarters at Beijing’s sleek, new World Finance Centre is a symbol of her ambitions. The summit I attended was designed to bring together employees and celebrate ten years — and many more. It did not disappoint with lots of good cheer and information exchange plus such treats as a dinner overlooking the Forbidden City and a luau on the beach to wrap things up. CSOFT, which she founded in 2003, has revenues topping $30 million and an average annual growth rate of 30 percent over the past ten years. Having reached that tier without raising any outside finance and entirely through organic growth, Shunee is now pushing CSOFT to expand its presence and profile overseas. After plans to open an office in Shenzhen this September, the next move is likely to be branches in Silicon Valley and Berlin, building out its remote operations in many markets. The outsourcing company’s business is naturally international, and three-quarters of its clients are based in the U.S., including Pfizer, Intel and Dell.  What CSOFT does essentially is translate or localize training manuals, how-to guides and promotion materials in various languages for companies doing business across borders.  It may not sound all that exciting but it’s essential. Along with her husband, Carl Yao, who is an executive VP in charge of the company’s technology, they are working together to keep CSOFT up to date technologically too. Carl showed me a mobile app he’s been working on that brings in elements of both Twitter and Wikipedia so that users can instantly translate terms and share them with the community. CSOFT got on the fast track when the multilingual localization firm that Shunee was working for in the early 1990s was acquired by outsourcing company Lionbridge. She was sent to open an outpost office in Beijing. When that rep office did not get off the ground, she promptly folded the team she had assembled into what became CSOFT in Beijing. Articulate, poised and personable, Shunee’s background follows the typical returnee path of the first generation of China’s tech entrepreneurs. Growing up in an intellectual household as the daughter of a dean at Nanjing University, she was under a lot of pressure to achieve. After graduation from Nanjing Normal University, she taught for eight months, then decided to quit to go to the U.S. There, she earned a Master’s degree from the Rhode Island College. It was in the U.S. that she also met her husband, who was working on his PhD in computer science, and later joined her in Beijing.  Now they and an employee group of …read more

An Entrepreneurial Mantra: Concentrate To Create; Diversify To Protect

By Steve Parrish, Contributor I was on a phone conference with the VP of a large advisor firm when he used the expression, “concentrate to create; diversify to protect.” Even though he was using this phrase in a context other than business owners, I had an epiphany that this is the mantra many business owners should embrace. …read more

Report: Ford Mustang returning to Australia in 2016

By Jonathon Ramsey

Filed under:

Australia’s Herald Sun newspaper has reported that the next-generation Ford Mustang is heading Down Under in 2016, just as Ford is hanging the “Closed for Good” sign on its Australian manufacturing operations and sending the Falcon to its grave. Ford hasn’t offered any official word on the matter, but the paper says that Ford’s global VP of sales and marketing, Jim Farley, is flying to Australia to make the announcement himself.

While Ford converted Mustangs in the early 2000s from left-hand to right-hand drive for the Australian market and then sold them at high prices, it’s been almost five decades since Ford imported a dedicated right-hand-drive Mustang to Oz. The arrival of the global model specifically made for places like Australia and the UK means Ford will also be able to offer them at better prices than the converted models; the Herald Sun says the price is expected to be “close to $50,000.”

And that’s for one of the “V8 performance models,” which are the only ones Australia will get; Ford apparently won’t send the turbocharged four cylinder or the V6. The Aussies could find out in a month from now whether this rumor is true. We will all find out what this Mustang fuss is about when the car debuts at next year’s New York Auto Show.

Carlos Ghosn Foretold Real Reasons for Luring Sales and Marketing Boss from Ram Trucks

By Justin Berkowitz

In a round of executive musical chairs, Nissan has hired away the CEO of Chrysler’s Ram division, Fred Diaz, to run its sales and marketing in the U.S. Filling Diaz’s spot, Chrysler is moving its execs up through the ranks: the CEO of Dodge is moving over to Ram, the head of Fiat USA takes the reins at Dodge, and a regional Fiat exec from California now is charged with running the Fiat brand here. This isn’t just a boon for the value of your Auto Exec trading cards—let’s face it, we all buy those for the gum—but shows what Nissan thinks it needs. Some have written off the moves as typical executive poaching and shuffling. Others tried to divine the reasons for the personnel change. Speaking with Carlos Ghosn at the New York auto show just a few weeks ago, however, Nissan’s thinking is clear.

“The American pickup truck market, as a country, would be the ninth-largest market in the world”

That Nissan scooped the boss of Ram to be its new head of sales and marketing is no accident. Even as Nissan tries to reduce the total number of models it sells around the world, Mr. Ghosn was unequivocal that the American market for full-size pickup trucks is so big, it justifies a unique model just for us. Even in its prime, though, the Titan was the Glass Joe of the pickup-truck Punch Out world. Now, it’s decrepit, too. A new model, which shares much of its architecture with the big NV van on sale now, will finally arrive in the next two years. (Nissan’s not entirely at fault for that, with Chrysler having backed out on the companies’ deal to collaborate on the next Titan and (now-current) Ram several years ago.) Once a new Titan is here, Nissan will need to tell people that yes, it’s selling a brand-new pickup truck—and that because it’s capable or cool or both, those people should buy one. Given Mr. Ghosn’s impassioned talk of Nissan and the full-size pickup market at that meeting, one imagines that being a truck guy was a near-necessity for a new marketing executive.

“Unless we hit 10 percent in the United States, we’re not having a fair return on the investments we’re doing here.”

Although Diaz is joining Nissan in a “newly created” role for sales and marketing, none should overlook the simultaneous departure of Al Castignetti, VP of the Nissan division in the U.S. We’ve not received any confirmation, even unofficially, that Mr. Castignetti was asked to go, but we don’t see the timing as mere coincidence. The company only said in a statement that Castignetti resigned to “pursue other interests.” A seasoned exec and a real pro, we don’t imagine Castignetti decided to fulfill his lifelong dream of being a master patisserie chef. There’s solid evidence from Mr. Ghosn’s remarks in March that he could be clearing house.

Brazil accused of not protecting Indians

Brazil‘s government has failed to comply with a court order to protect the Awa indigenous people in the Amazon jungles, a British-based Indian rights group said Thursday.

Survival International said in a statement that authorities have ignored a federal judge’s deadline “to evict all invaders from the heartland of Earth’s most threatened tribe by the end of March.” It said the deadline passed and not a single illegal logger or settler has been evicted.

On March 12, 2012, judge Jirair Aram Meguerian ordered that all the loggers and settlers should be removed within 12 months.

The organization said the Awa tribe “is at extreme risk of extinction.”

It added that Funai, Brazil‘s indigenous affairs agency was “still waiting for support from the Justice Ministry, the federal police and central government to evict the invaders.”

Funai’s press office said it had no immediate comment. Calls to the Justice Ministry and federal police went unanswered.

Survival International said that more than 30 percent of Awa territory has been deforested and that loggers are “rapidly closing in on their communities and have already been marking trees for deforestation.

It quotes an Awa Indian called Haikaramoka’a, as saying: “The loggers are ruining our forest. They have built roads. We are scared; they could go after the uncontacted Indians. We are scared because the loggers could kill us, and the uncontacted Indians.”

About 100 of the 450 Awa remain uncontacted and are at particular risk of diseases brought in by the outsiders. Survival International said.
