Report: Formula E calendar set at ten races, top F1 teams being courted

Formula E, the open-wheel EV racing series has finalized the calendar for its inaugural season. Set to kick of in 2014, the races looks like to have been distributed quite evenly across the globe.

Two American races (LA and Miami) along with a pair of South American races in Rio and Buenos Aires round out the contests in the New World. London, Berlin and Rome make up the European leg of the championship, while Beijing, Bangkok and Putrajaya cover Asia.

This news follows a report from Autoweek that Formula E is courting some of the top Formula One teams. According to AW, series organizer Alejandro Agag is already in talks with McLaren, and is of the opinion that one day the likes of Ferrari and Red Bull will take part in the emissions free series.

Despite the current lack of big names, the parts of the Formula E cars look promising. Batteries from Williams are mated to electric motors from McLaren, while Dallara provides the chassis. Like F1, there’s only one tire supplier, although we’re happy to announce it’s Michelin rather than Pirelli. Series test driver Lucas di Grassi showed us just what the FE cars can do with an in-car video a few months ago.

As for drivers, we don’t see Sebastien Vettel leaving his gas-powered racer soon. Formula E could see an influx of retired F1 drivers and GP2 veterans, although Agag told Autoweek “I can’t say any names yet.” The series will kickoff in 2014, in the Italian capital of Rome.

Argentina's president gets a grandson: Nestor Ivan

Argentina’s president Cristina Fernandez is now a grandmother.

The country’s state-run news service Telam reported Monday that Nestor Ivan Kirchner was born late Sunday night at the Otamendi hospital in Buenos Aires.

The name is obvious homage to the late President Nestor Kirchner, who was Fernandez’s husband.

The news brought waves of good wishes in Argentina’s social media, but there were no official announcements by mid-day Monday, and the president’s normally busy Twitter account was silent.

Father Maximo Kirchner is active in the Campora political movement and mother Rocio Garcia is a dentist, but the couple keeps a low profile in Argentina.

Leftist priests: Francis can fix church 'in ruins'

Liberation theologian Leonardo Boff says Pope Francis has what it takes to fix a church “in ruins.”

Previous popes tried to silence the Brazilian leftist, but Boff says the former Argentine cardinal who became pope last month has both the vigor and tenderness to create a new spiritual world.

Boff told a packed room at the Buenos Aires book fair Saturday that with Francis, the Vatican’s campaign to stamp out liberation theology is over. He says Francis is anything but a closed-minded conservative.

Boff says “Pope Francis comes with the perspective that many of us in Latin America share… our churches work together to support universal causes, causes like human rights, from the perspective of the poor, the destiny of humanity that is suffering.”

Pope Francis' successor in Argentina assumes post

Argentine Mario Poli was inaugurated as the new archbishop of Buenos Aires on Saturday, taking over the post held by Jorge Bergoglio before he became Pope Francis.

Poli, 66, was named to the position by Francis in late March and Vatican envoy Emil Paul Tscherrig welcomed him in the name of the pope in the ceremony at the capital’s metropolitan cathedral, saying the pontiff “accompanies us from Rome.”

Argentine President Cristina Fernandez, who was traveling in Peru and Venezuela, did not attend the ceremony but several of her Cabinet ministers did.

“The arrival of the replacement for Bergoglio generates enthusiasm, expectations and hope, and we wish him the best in his pastoral activities in Buenos Aires,” said Julian Dominguez, the head of the Chamber of Deputies.

Poli is a priest very much in Francis’ vein, focused on pastoral work. He has been the bishop in Santa Rosa in the rural La Pampa province, and from 2002-2008 he served as one of then-Cardinal Bergoglio‘s auxiliary bishops in Buenos Aires, but he was not among the church officials rumored to be top candidates for the post.

He has a doctorate in theology from the Catholic University of Argentina, but before he was ordained as a priest in 1978, he earned a degree in social work from the public University of Buenos Aires, known as UBA. That apparently impressed Bergoglio, who talked about the benefits of such training in a 2012 book, “On Heaven and Earth.”

Falkland Islanders have honored Margaret Thatcher with a memorial service, while in Buenos Aires, Argentine military veterans burned her picture along with a Union Jack.

The competing visions of the late British prime minister Wednesday could not be more different.

Islanders consider Thatcher their savior, while Argentines say she died a war criminal for sinking the Argentine warship Belgrano during Britain’s 1982 war to end Argentina‘s military occupation.

BUENOS AIRES — As Concepción Martínez, her husband and two daughters pulled into the last subway station here, cheers and clapping erupted from the throngs of people, some wearing turn-of-the-20th-century dress, waiting on the platform.

Camera flashes lighted the tunnels as passengers took their final rides in the saloonlike wagons — with their wooden benches, frosted glass lamps and manually operated brass doors — of South America’s first subway line.

“Every day, I ride this train into work, so this is a kind of goodbye,” Ms. Martínez said.

The antique Belgian-built cars, a symbol of Buenos Aires’s early-20th-century wealth, were taken out of service this year, and their retirement is a poignant example of the city’s struggle to preserve its physical history as some of its icons and infrastructure crumble….

Pope's soccer habit a perfect fit for papal gifts

Soccer-mad Pope Francis is building quite a collection of team jerseys.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy gave Francis a national jersey signed by all the players during a 25-minute audience Monday in the Apostolic Palace.

The pope quipped: “Just like the San Lorenzo one!” Last week, members of Francis’ beloved Buenos Aires team offered him a club jersey during the pope’s general audience and got a papal shout-out in Spanish. Francis is a lifelong San Lorenzo fan and became a club member (ID No. 88235) in 2008.

A few weeks ago, a fan gave Francis another San Lorenzo jersey as the pope drove through St. Peter’s Square.

Italy has invited Argentina to play a friendly this summer; Italy coach Cesare Prandelli hopes it will be preceded by a papal audience.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Genzyme, a Sanofi company (EURONEXT: SAN and NYSE: SNY), announced today Argentina‘s National Administration of Drugs, Food and Medical Technology (ANMAT) has approved once-daily, oral AUBAGIO® 14 mg as a new treatment indicated for patients with relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS).

With Pope Francis, it's prime time for Jesuits

For decades, the Society of Jesus has faced the same struggles to find priests that have plagued the wider Roman Catholic Church. The Rev. Chuck Frederico, one of the priests who evaluate Jesuit applicants, says he usually heard from five a week, or fewer.

Then, last month, the former Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio stepped out on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica — the first Jesuit to be elected pope.

The number of queries jumped to four or five each day.

“Some guys who made contact in the past weeks are serious candidates,” said Frederico, vocations director for the region from Maine to Georgia. “This election of the Holy Father has given them reason to examine this more fully.”

Jesuits have only started absorbing the novelty of one of their own leading the church. Most were so shocked, they Googled to confirm the connection before they dared to celebrate. Robert Wassmann, an instructor at Washington Jesuit Academy, a middle school, told the Archdiocese of Washington newspaper he ran down the hall shouting: “He’s a Jesuit! He’s a Jesuit!”

But members of the order have also started thinking ahead, to the potential impact of this pontificate on their many ministries, colleges and overall future. Pope Francis could inspire new recruits and wider regard for the society. But he could also feel compelled to intervene in the inner workings of the order, which has had sometimes tense relations with the Vatican over the centuries.

“In the context of young men and women considering a religious vocation and calling, it has to have an impact,” said the Rev. Thomas Gaunt, a Jesuit and analyst at Georgetown University’s Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate. “And that impact will be at least a blip on the screen and could be more.”

Bergoglio was more than a rank-and-file member of the Society of Jesus. He held the order’s most trusted positions in Argentina.

Soon after he was ordained, he was appointed novice master, in charge of training the newest recruits. He went on to become provincial, or national leader, before joining the church hierarchy as a bishop in Buenos Aires. Francis has chosen a papal coat of arms featuring the Jesuit seal: a sunburst containing a red cross and the “HIS” abbreviation for Jesus Christ.

LA PLATA, Argentina — At least 52 people drowned in their homes and cars, were electrocuted or died in other accidents as flooding from days of torrential rains swamped Argentina‘s low-lying capital and province of Buenos Aires.

At least 46 died Wednesday in and around the city of La Plata, Gov. Daniel Scioli said. Six deaths were reported a day earlier in the nation’s capital.

Heavy rains flood Argentina's capital; 5 dead

Torrential rains in Argentina‘s capital have triggered flooding responsible for at least five deaths.

A record 6.1 inches (155 millimeters) of rain fell in just two hours in Buenos Aires on Tuesday. That’s equal to all of normal rainfall for April.

The storm caused power outages, flooded subway lines and turned the streets into rivers.

Emergency officials are asking people to stay at home after a subway worker died when he was electrocuted after stepping on wet railway lines and after three men and a woman drowned to death.

Service on a subway line has been interruupted, and trains on other lines are delayed. Officials are asking people to avoid driving to prevent accidents.

The Argentine National Metereological Service expects more storms Tuesday in Buenos Aires and says heavy rains will continue until Friday.

Pope names successor in Buenos Aires

Pope Francis has made his first bishop appointment, naming the bishop of Santa Rosa, Argentina as his successor as archbishop of Buenos Aires and the top churchman in Argentina.

Archbishop Mario Poli had been an auxiliary bishop in the Argentine capital in 2002-2008 while the former Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio was archbishop.

The 66-year-old Poli, trained in social work, made news recently when he publicly dressed-down a priest who had posted a Facebook greeting on the birthday of former Argentine dictator Jorge Videla.

Argentine media say Poli is very much a priest in Francis’ vein, less political and more pastoral.

Pope reluctant to be pope: What does it mean?

He still goes by “Bergoglio” when speaking to friends, seems reluctant to call himself pope and has decided to live in the Vatican hotel rather than the grand papal apartment in the Apostolic Palace.

It might seem as if Pope Francis is in a bit of denial over his new job as leader of the world’s 1.2-billion Catholics. Or perhaps he’s simply changing the popular idea of what it means to be pope, keeping the no-frills style he cultivated as archbishop of Buenos Aires in ways that may have broad implications for the church.

The world has already seen how Francis has cast aside many trappings of the papacy, refusing to don the red velvet cape Benedict XVI wore for official occasions and keeping the simple, iron-plated pectoral cross he used as bishop and archbishop.

On Thursday, his belief that a pope’s job is to serve the world’s lowliest will be on display when he washes the feet of a dozen young inmates at a juvenile detention center in Rome. Previous popes have celebrated the Holy Thursday ritual, which re-enacts Christ’s washing of his disciples’ feet before his crucifixion, by washing the feet of priests in one of Rome‘s most ornate basilicas.

Such moves hint, even at this early stage, only two weeks into his papacy, at an apparent effort by Francis to demystify the office of pope.

Unlike his predecessors, he doesn’t sign his name “Pope Francis,” ending his official correspondence simply “Francis.”

To those closest he is still Bergoglio, and this week, Italian state radio broadcast a voice mail he left wishing a friend Happy Birthday. “It’s Bergoglio,” the pope said, using the surname he was born with.

Even on Day One, Francis didn’t acknowledge he was pope.

Speaking on the loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica after his election the night of March 13, Francis told the tens of thousands gathered there that the cardinals’ task during the conclave had been to “give Rome a bishop.”

And bishop of Rome is the title he has emphasized repeatedly ever since — not vicar of Christ, or any of his other official titles.

Pope Francis forces Argentine political about-face

Catholic doctrine considers the pope to be God’s delegate on Earth. That alone might explain the remarkable about-face that Argentina‘s populist president Cristina Fernandez and most of her followers have managed to pull off in the days since the cardinal she treated as a political arch-enemy became Pope Francis.

But there are more earthly reasons for her turnaround, factors that have more to do with the dirty and often contradictory Argentine political landscape that Jorge Mario Bergoglio knows so well.

Fernandez had sought to neutralize the Buenos Aires cardinal’s political influence for so long that she and her allies suddenly found themselves out of step with the joy most Argentines have shown at seeing one of their own running the Vatican.

For years, they had labeled him “chief of the opposition” and “accomplice of the dictatorship.” Supporters of the president reportedly even tried lobbying other cardinals to turn against Bergoglio when choosing a new pontiff.

But that was before he became Francis. Now he’s suddenly the pope who shares the same commitment to the poor and dream of a “Patria Grande” (Grand Homeland) that the populist leaders of Latin America have been pursuing. Fernandez announced this herself, after a private lunch at the Vatican with her former foe that had Argentines glued to their TV sets, marveling over the sudden change. “The president made the simple calculation that this confrontation was totally a losing proposition,” and so the government decided to try to co-opt the Argentines’ fervor for their pope, political analyst Claudio Fantini said.

In Argentina‘s polarized political universe, which treats everyone as either a friend or enemy of the president, Fantini called this a “Copernican shift,” as if everyone suddenly learned the true center of the solar system.

And Francisco, whose sharp political skills have long been apparent to Argentines, responded with his own highly symbolic gestures.

He invited Fernandez to share his first official audience as pope and then ended speculation in Argentina that he might visit home before October’s congressional elections, which could determine whether she will have enough votes to undo constitutional term limits and keep ruling beyond 2015. The president’s opponents had hoped he would come in July or September, and perhaps push votes their way.
