XCOM: Enemy Within Appears On Ratings Board Website

XCOM: Enemy Unknown fans may soon find themselves with new content to play according to an online listing for something called XCOM: Enemy Within.

Three listings for the new title have appeared on South Korea’s Game Rating Board website, each for a different platform: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. Entries for encrypted Enemy Unknown files containing the phrase “XCOM EW” can also be found on SteamDB, a website that tracks content found on the Steam network.

What Is Warmachine: Tactics?

Privateer Press’ Warmachine: Tactics Kickstarter campaign aims to bring the excellent tabletop game to PC and Mac, but its modest goal of just $550,000 seems a little low. You can’t fund a AAA game with a half-million bucks, and developer WhiteMoon Dreams appears to be going for broke in terms of production values. It name-drops Final Fantasy Tactics, XCOM, and Valkyria Chronicles as inspirations, even.

IGN asked Matt Wilson, Chief Creative Officer at Privateer Press about the sustainability of such a low goal, and how far the ambitions of the Warmachine: Tactics video game actually reach.

As of press time, Warmachine: Tactics has raised more than $776,000. It reached its funding goal of $550K in just 35 hours, and Privateer Press/WhiteMoon Dreams have more than three weeks to raise additional funds.

XCOM Website And Videos Taken Offline

2K has taken the website and videos for the much-delayed XCOM shooter offline, leading to speculation the game may have been rebranded.

As noted by DigitalTrends, the title’s official website now leads to a 404 error. While this could just be a technical glitch, it seems unlikely considering that previously released trailers have also been removed from 2K Games’ YouTube channel.

XCOM on iPhone and iPad Will Have No Paid Power-ups

I recently had the opportunity to talk to XCOM: Enemy Unknown designer Jake Solomon about the hit strategy game’s upcoming mobile port. Given the rise of freemium and questionable practices that often accompany the model, I had to ask about In-App-Purchases. Will gamers be able to pay extra money to get more powerful squadmates or, say, up their chance-to-hit from 75% to 100%?

Oh God, please… no. I’m not sure I would be able to sleep at night. My food would taste like ashes in my mouth.

Firaxis Teases More XCOM on the Way

In addition to revealing XCOM: Enemy Unknown for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch at is PAX East panel, developer Firaxis also provided the faintest of teases regarding a potential XCOM sequel or expansion.

The brief (very brief – just a few second long) video showed The Council greeting panel attendees with a familiar message – “Hello, Commander.” The shadowy council spokesman then began to warn of a “new threat,” before the signal became filled with static and lost.

While it certainly would have been nice to have more details on the future of XCOM, today’s PAX East tease does at least confirm that more XCOM is in the works within Firaxis.

Full-Blown XCOM Coming to iPad and iPhone

2K Games announced today at its PAX East panel that last year’s hit turn-based-strategy reboot XCOM: Enemy Unknown is headed to the App Store this summer.

The announcement specifies that this mobile release will provide gamers the “full” XCOM experience – this is a port of the PC/console release and not a reimagined title ala Civilization Revolution. IGN had a chance to briefly see the game in action on an iPad. Character shadows and certain whizz-bang effects like muzzle flashes were absent but otherwise the experience seemed to make the transition to a tablet fully intact.

2K told IGN that the biggest challenge in bringing XCOM to mobile isn’t the power of the hardware, but filesize requirements. On PC the game gobbles up 20 GB of hard drive space – a requirement that obviously doesn’t fly on phones or tablets. We didn’t specifically notice any low-res textures or other obviously missing content to accomodate for the lower filesize footprint, but it’s likely that some sacrifices had to be made to get the game down to size.

Razer Edge Pro: Our first look at a Windows 8 gaming tablet

At first glance, the Razer Edge Pro is indistinguishable from other Windows 8 tablets: it’s 2.2 pounds of matte black metal with a 10.1-inch screen and a single Windows button. It feels heavy in your hands, a little bulkier than the Surface Pro and much, much hotter.

That heat flows from the powerful components nestled inside, including an Nvidia GPU and an Intel Core i7 CPU that render Razer’s tablet capable of competing with similarly-priced ultrabooks in terms of performance. I haven’t spent enough time with the tablet yet to know whether or not it delivers on that potential—look for our full review next week—but Razer’s latest leaves a strong first impression the moment you pull it out of the packaging.

Playing PC games on a tablet is fantastic

The most important thing you need to know about the Razer Edge Pro is that it works—you can use it to play contemporary PC games at decent settings, and the battery lasts long enough to let you play for at least 2-3 hours at a stretch before you need to recharge.

Having complex PC games like Civilization 5 at your fingertips is amazing.

You can augment that with the extended battery pack in the Edge gamepad chassis—which Razer sells separately or as part of a bundle with the Edge Pro— but there’s a better reason to accessorize: most PC games suck if you can’t use either a mouse and keyboard or a gamepad. I’ve spent a few hours playing PC games with the Edge Pro, and I’ve had a blast playing 3D games like Far Cry 3, Tomb Raider and XCOM while curled up on the couch with the gamepad chassis resting on my lap. Being able to play complex PC games from the comfort of my couch is amazing, but it wouldn’t work without the gamepad accessory.

Omerta: City of Gangsters Review

There’s already a good game out there that focuses on making a fortune off of properties in early 20th century Atlantic City–it’s called Monopoly. In theory, at least, Omerta: City of Gangsters isn’t too different from the Parker Brothers favorite. Both games have you buying and upgrading houses along Baltic Avenue and the Boardwalk, both feature cutthroat territorial acquisitions, and at times both at least present the threat of spending some time in jail. Toss in a few gangsters, some XCOM-styled turn-based combat, and some smart capitalizing on the current popularity of Boardwalk Empire, and you’d think you’d have a moxie-stuffed contender that’d let us find out what Mr. Moneybags could have accomplished with a Tommy gun.
