Dead Grass / Weed Identification

By sagosto63

I live in Northern NJ (Bergen County) and I have been battling issues with my lawn all year. I had/have several patches of missing/dead grass. I laid down 2 bags of Pennington Northeast seed (Pennington® : Northeast Mix) which filled most holes but it seems to be different than the existing grass. I also have quite a bit of dead grass which could be due to my dog but he is small and other neighbors with dogs don’t have these patches. I always use the mulch feature on my mower so could it be the dead clippings? If so, I assume it would be everywhere and not in patches. A few weeks ago I noticed weeds sprouting up EVERYWHERE. I am not sure where they came from? I use Weed-B-Gone in various areas when I notice a weed or two but this came out of no where.

1) What grass do I have?
2) Why do I have dead patches?
3) What is that weed? Crab Grass? Why is it sprouting up now everywhere?

Old Horse Found With Eyes And Anus Cut Out, Farm In Argentina July 2013.

By ScottCWaring

Date of discovery: July 2013
Location of discovery: Fernandez, Santiago del Estero, Argentina
Translated from Spanish
Source: http://www.visionovni.com.ar/modules/news/article.php?storyid=1112

This horse was found this way by its owner in the town of Fernández, Santiago del Estero.

The peculiarity of the case is that the animal aged, so it is presumed he died in those days, came late to the next morning with a sharp cut in the eye area and one in the anus area.

Given this information, we asked the farmer for photographs of wounds so we could share the pictures.

The photos we received, show a cut with the total eye organ missing. It also has a cut in the skin about the eye bowl (2 cm. Approximately), with flush cutting areas and areas with irregularities cuts, similar to the action of the knife.

Anal area, may be a flat, circular section of approximately 18 cm in diameter, with detachment of the bristles of the queue, a “kind” rising above the anus.

It is noteworthy that around the body, on the ground, we see the typical kicking the dying animal, with many marks of respect.

No residual blood is observed, or the eye socket, or around the anus. Also on the ground. Yes appreciated, fresh bleeding hinted in one of the nostrils.

REPORT From ANIMAL OWNER

Equine owner expressed surprise at the cut that appeared in the eye area, saying that he had never seen anything like it.
Moreover, during the night he did not hear any noise, nor any evidence of action of scavengers such as crows, common in the area.

He stated that they did not work on the body with knives, and if someone had, by the proximity of the animal to the house, they would have heard, because the farm has dogs that alert any them of any movement.

The tax used to stop at age 14. Now it dogs the little tykes until they turn 24, if they are in school. Is there a way to avoid it? …read more

French Mali hostage was 'shot in the head'

French hostage Philippe Verdon, who was kidnapped by Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) in Mali in 2011 and found dead several weeks ago, was executed with a shot to the head, prosecutors said Thursday.

“After the return of the body to France, the autopsy… was able to establish that Philippe Verdon was murdered by being shot in the head,” the Paris prosecutors’ office said.

The body of Verdon, who suffered from an ulcer and tachycardia, an abnormally fast heartbeat, was flown back to Paris on Wednesday.

The possibility had previously been raised that he had died from his ailments and that his killing had been staged.

The 53-year-old was taken from a hotel in northeastern Mali in November 2011, together with Serge Lazarevic, another French national.

The pair were on a business trip for a cement project, according to relatives, who have denied that they had any ties with secret service or mercenaries.

Verdon’s captors announced in March they had killed him in revenge for France’s military intervention in the country.

But Paris had never confirmed this until his body was discovered in the country’s north and identified this month.

Pascal Lupart, head of a support committee for Verdon, said the confirmation that he had been executed only added to his family’s pain.

“This murder, which adds to the pain of a family already in mourning,” shows that “these dogs are able to carry out their threats and to carry out a cold-blooded killing,” he said.

Lupart said he believed Verdon “was certainly executed because he was weak.”

French forces intervened in Mali in January to help the weak Malian military drive out Islamist rebels who had seized control of the country’s north, angering extremists.

At least seven French citizens remain captive in Africa, with another two in Syria.

Man to plead guilty in Ohio slave labor case

A man plans to plead guilty to charges he helped enslave and beat a mentally disabled woman and her daughter and steal her pain medication, his attorney said Wednesday as a judge scheduled a hearing for a plea.

The charges announced a day earlier against Daniel Brown reflect the lesser degree of his involvement in the case, said his attorney, Russell Bensing, who noted Brown spoke to government investigators at the time of his arrest.

“I would anticipate that we would enter a guilty plea,” Bensing said.

Brown’s case was referred to a federal judge for an arraignment and plea. No date was set. A message seeking comment was left with federal prosecutors.

Brown is among four people charged with targeting and recruiting the woman in 2010 and holding her until October in a house in Ashland, 80 miles northeast of Columbus.

An indictment against three other defendants alleges the woman was denied food, sexually assaulted and threatened with dogs and snakes.

Jodie Callahan, Jessica Hunt and Dezerah Silsby were indicted Tuesday on five counts including forced labor, acquiring a controlled substance by deception and theft of government benefits related to allegations they forced the woman to use her public assistance money to buy groceries and cigarettes for them.

The indictment said Callahan forced the woman to engage in sexual acts with him and threatened he and Hunt would kill her if she told anyone.

In November 2011, Callahan and Hunt forced the woman to hit her child, captured the beating on video and threatened to turn it over to police as a way of controlling her, the indictment said.

Callahan’s attorney declined to comment, saying he hadn’t seen the indictment. A message was left with Silsby’s attorney.

Hunt’s attorney said his client will plead not guilty and “vigorously denies all the allegations.”

Public defender Ed Bryan said the charges stem from overeager police and prosecutors trusting the word of people who had something to gain by lying. He said the woman was not held as a slave.

“This is not a person who …read more

Grand jury indicts 4 in Ohio slave labor case

Four people have been charged with enslaving a mentally disabled Ohio woman and her daughter, beating the woman, denying her food, sexually assaulting her and threatening her with dogs and snakes.

The charges unveiled Tuesday also allege the four forced the woman and her child to sleep in unsafe conditions in a house in Ashland, restricted access to a bathroom and forced the woman to eat dog food and crawl on the floor wearing a dog collar.

Jodie Callahan, Jessica Hunt and Dezerah Silsby were indicted on five counts including forced labor. Daniel Brown was charged in a criminal information of the sort that typically precedes a plea deal.

Callahan’s mother, Becky Callahan, has said the allegations against the defendants are “all lies.”

Dogs imitate novel human actions and store them in memory

Dogs can learn, retain and replay actions taught by humans after a short delay. According to a new study by Claudia Fugazza and Adám Miklósi, from Eötvös Loránd University in Hungary, this deferred imitation provides the first evidence of dogs’ cognitive ability to both encode and recall actions. The research is published in Springer’s journal Animal Cognition. …read more

3 men charged after woman's body, 35 abused animals found in bug-infested van in Arizona

Three men face are facing charges after a woman’s body was found in an insect-infested van in Phoenix, police said.

According to MyFoxPhoenix.com, the van was carrying 35 animals and was infested with spiders and cockroaches.

Phoenix police said Lola Mae Stout, 73, was found dead Sunday.

Her 79-year-old husband, Alva Stout, and her two sons — Alan Stout, 42, and Gregory Stout, 44, all were booked into jail on suspicion of 35 counts of animal abuse and mistreatment.

Police said additional charges in the woman’s death are possible.

The sons told authorities that their mother died on a trip to Quartzsite, so they put her body in the van and drove back to Phoenix. Alva Stout says his wife was alive when they got into the van.

Police said they learned the woman had prior medical conditions which required specific medical care, including prior strokes, high blood pressure, goiter and schizophrenia.

Also found in the van were 13 animal carriers containing 12 dogs, 22 cats and one pigeon.

The carriers were described as dirty and moldy, and Arizona Humane Society investigators said the animals were all malnourished, abused and neglected. Investigators say it’s likely many, if not all, will have to be euthanized.

AHS spokeswoman Bretta Nelson called it a “very, very bad case.”

“What made this so different was the fact that it was a van filled with dozens and dozens of animals, people, feces, debris, cockroaches, spiders, just something we haven’t seen to that scope in a very, very long time,” she told MyFoxPhoenix.com.

Police didn’t immediately know Monday if any of the Stouts had attorneys yet.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

D.N.A. backs lore on pre-Columbian dogs

By hnn

BISHOPVILLE, S.C. — Inside a fenced acre on the swampy Lynches River flood plain in central South Carolina, seven of Don Anderson’s primitive dogs spring into high alert at approaching strangers. Medium-sized, they fan out amid his junkyard of improvised habitat: a few large barrels to dig under, an abandoned camper shell from a pickup, segments of black plastic water pipe and backhoed dirt mounds overgrown with waist-high ragweed….

Some Carolina dogs still live in the wild, and local people have long thought they were one of the few breeds that predated the European arrival in the Americas: “Our native dog,” as Michael Ruano, another enthusiast who often works with Mr. Anderson, put it. “America’s natural dog.”

Dog that ate poisoned meatball in San Francisco dies

A dog that ate one of numerous poisoned meatballs found in San Francisco neighborhoods has died.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the 7-year-old dachshund named Oskar died on Thursday, eight days after eating the meatball.

The meatball was among hundreds laced with strychnine that were scattered in the city’s Twin Peaks and Diamond Heights neighborhoods earlier this month. Strychnine is a common rat poison.

San Francisco Police Lt. Miriam Pengel tells the Chronicle that the meatballs had enough poison to kill a human.

Oskar is believed to be the only dog that ate any of them. He was expected to recover.

Police are still investigating the incident and do not know whether dogs were the intended targets.

Zimbabwe political rivals vie for voters in diamond-rich region

Zimbabwe’s political foes President Robert Mugabe and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai traded barbs on Saturday in a bid to woo voters ahead of the July 31 election.

The rivals hit the campaign trail in the diamond-rich east of the country with less than three weeks before the ballot box ends their tense unity government forced by chaotic 2008 polls.

“The choice is very simple, it is between a failed government over the past 33 years and a promise of a future which is very bright,” said Tsvangirai, 61, in the town of Mutare, referring to Mugabe’s uninterrupted hold on power.

The 89-year-old Mugabe, clad in a white church robe and holding a biblical staff, appealed for support to thousands of members of an indigenous church in Marange, about 200 kilometres (125 miles) east of the capital Harare.

“We made a mistake in 2008 to vote for the people who love the white people. Voting for people who want to bring back the white people and thinking that there won’t be any development without white people,” he said.

The veteran leader has focused on indigenisation and black empowerment, arguing that Zimbabwe must own its vast natural resources.

Tsvangirai is promising voters to fix the economy, clean up murky dealings, revive industry and attract much needed investment to create employment.

Addressing thousands of supporters wearing red t-shirts with his portrait, Tsvangirai vowed to promote transparency in the diamond mining sector.

“Where is the diamond money going? We know that if we get all the money from diamonds we would create 100,000 jobs,” he said at a rally in a stadium in Mutare, 254 kilometres east of Harare.

“If all the diamond money comes through government we will be able to pay teachers and soldiers and not that the revenue benefit a few people.”

Tsvangirai also pledged to examine diamond mining contracts, with the treasury saying that gem sales proceeds are not reaching it.

“For all the companies mining diamonds, we will review the contracts because the current contracts promote corruption,” he said.

Mugabe too honed in on the country’s natural riches to push his message of indigenisation of the economy.

“The rich resources that our country is endowed with are for the black people, this is our country. And those who must rule this country must be black people,” he said.

Mugabe also attacked gay marriage, saying it was alien to Africa and criticised US President Barack Obama for urging Africa to respect gay rights on a recent visit to the continent.

“You heard it when Obama came to Africa saying Africa must allow gay marriages, even women to marry each other, so they can wed if they want,” he said.

“God destroyed the earth because of these sins. Weddings are for a man and a woman, who when married they bear children,” he said.

Mugabe who once said gays and lesbians are worse than pigs and dogs, said animals are better off because they know their sexual orientation.

Previous elections in Zimbabwe have been marred by bloodshed. Tsvangirai withdrew from a presidential run-off in 2008 despite winning the first …read more
