How Calvin Klein Will Switch Things Up at New York Fashion Week

By Justin Fenner

After years of hosting New York Fashion Week shows at its corporate offices, Calvin Klein plans to move its Spring 2014 show to a new location. It’ll also scale back from two shows in a day to just one.

The brand announced Tuesday that it will stage a single Calvin Klein Collection show (2 p.m. local time on Sept. 12) at Spring Studios, an as-of-yet unopened outpost for the British creative agency of the same name. In addition to office space, Spring Studios includes event space and a fully functioning photo studio. Calvin Klein will be the only brand to show its wares there for Spring 2014, and the office will officially open later this Fall.

Calvin Klein will also host an afterparty on another floor of Spring Studios that serves two purposes: it will celebrate Francisco Costa’s 10 years as the brand’s creative director, and it will also officially introduce the brand’s latest fragrance Downtown to the global market. In May it was announced that Rooney Mara was the face of the new scent.

But Calvin Klein isn’t the only brand that’s experiencing changes for New York Fashion Week. Read on to see which of our other favorite fashion brands is doing things differently for Spring 2014. …read more

Christy Turlington Strips Down (Again) For Calvin Klein

By Robert Khederian

Calvin Klein Underwear has revealed its latest star. The iconic underwear label tapped Christy Turlington Burns – whose relationship with the brand began on the runway in 1987 – to appear in its Fall 2013 campaign, photographed by Mario Sorrenti.

“It was great shooting with Mario,” Turlington Burns said. “We have worked together before, but never for Calvin Klein, and both of us have had a long history with the brand, so it’s kind of nice to have a first experience with him and Calvin Klein.”

The images, which were shot in Vieques, Puerto Rico, identify with Calvin Klein Underwear‘s signature minimalist, sophisticated, yet still provocative aesthetic. The campaign is set to be released gradually in August, and you can expect a flood of images to grace the September issues. Until then, here’s a look at the first few photographs from the campaign.

Coffee Gets a Hot Dose of New Competition

By Andrew Marder, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

The world is getting smaller, or at least more connected. In an odd reversal of business, it seems more and more brands are being consolidated under one big owner — almost the way it was in the early part of the 20th century. Yesterday, another massive company slipped under the waves, when D.E. Master Blenders agreed to sell itself off to Joh. A. Benckiser, or JAB.

Never heard of JAB or Master Blenders, you say? That’s not really surprising, as both are European companies. But even if you don’t know them, you know their work, and with this purchase, you might know their wrath.

The Continental Congress
JAB is a sort of multiheaded beast of an investment arm, which buys and holds companies for the Reimann family. The Reimanns, in turn, are wealthy — about $20 billion net worth  — heirs to a chemical company fortune. JAB is a private investment arm, which works on its own and through three other vehicles:

  • Coty is a majority-owned beauty product company, which produces Calvin Klein, Adidas, and other designer perfumes.
  • Reckitt Benckiser is a home-products company, which manages dozens of brands, including Air Wick, Clearasil, and Old English in the United States.
  • The LABELUX Group owns Jimmy Choo and Bally and focuses on high-end fashion

The most recent buying spree has come from the root company, JAB. In the past year, it has purchased Peet’s Coffee and Tea for $975 million, Caribou Coffee for $340 million, and now Master Blenders for $9.8 billion. In less than one year, the company has amassed a multibillion-dollar global coffee position.

This is where we look out
That’s a good reason to be worried, if you’re an investor in Starbucks or Green Mountain Coffee Roasters or really any major coffee company. Master Blenders‘ main line is a brand called Douwe Egberts, which used to be served in Burger King until the company signed with Seattle’s Best, a Starbucks brand.

So far, JAB has said that it’s not planning to combine the operations of its three new brands. Instead it plans to keep the American coffee shop companies doing their thing, and the European production arm doing its thing. But Master Blenders does have the ability to make pods to go up against Green Mountain and others, and if it wanted to, the company could use that capability to make a move in the American market.

It could also move against Starbucks, by using its European production capabilities to bring new lines to the U.S., or by using its U.S. cafe brands to bring new competition to Starbucks in Europe. No matter what JAB does, it’s almost certainly going to present new challenges for U.S. coffee brands in the future. Investors should watch for any new business lines from JAB and keep an eye out for more acquisitions in the near future.

With Green Mountain as cheap as it’s ever been, many investors are wondering whether

‘Vikings’ On History: Travis Fimmel Previews The Journey Of Ragnar Lothbrok

By The Huffington Post News Editors

You might not be familiar with the name Travis Fimmel yet, but after the debut of History Channel’s “Vikings” (Sunday, March 3 at 10 p.m. EST), you’ll probably have a lot to say about the blue-eyed Australian, who first gained attention for his six-figure modeling deal (and accompanying underwear campaigns) with Calvin Klein in the early aughts.

Fimmel parlayed billboard notoriety into a number of short-lived TV and independent movie roles, playing the titular character in The WB’s “Tarzan” in 2003, and starring alongside Patrick Swayze in A&E’s “The Beast” in 2009. It’s History’s “Vikings” that should provide Fimmel’s breakout role, however.

Created by Michael Hirst, “Vikings” is the latest in a long line of lavish historical adaptations from the writer-producer, whose credits include the Oscar-winning film “Elizabeth” and the decadent Showtime series “The Tudors.” “Vikings” has similarly striking production values, shot amid lush greenery in the wilds of Ireland, replete with misty hills and expansive lakes to add a mythic atmosphere befitting a culture that worshipped gods who controlled the elements, like Odin and Thor.

Calvin Klein Fall 2013

By Christina Perez

For Fall 2013, Francisco Costa injected Calvin Klein‘s usual allegiance to monochromatic minimalism with a pattern other designers have featured heavily this season: glen plaid. The designer used the check in a number of pieces but echoed its intersecting lines elsewhere, like a pleated leather dress affixed with bits of metal arranged to look like square crosses, or a wool skirt with square hole cutouts. Many of the looks were cinched in with belts so large they might be more familiar to rodeo champions or professional boxers than runway models.

Calvin Klein Makes Good Case For Watching the Super Bowl

By Justin Fenner

If you hadn’t planned on watching this Sunday’s Super Bowl, Calvin Klein is making a compelling case for at least sitting through the first quarter.

That’s when the company will debut its first-ever Super Bowl commercial, a 30-second spot that advertises the new Calvin Klein Concept underwear collection. The black and white ad, directed by Fabien Baron, features shots of model Matthew Terry stretching and flexing in a pair of miniscule black briefs. Between those shots are a few short clips of vague machinery. A press release said the visual pairing is supposed to invoke the “man vs. machine” idea inspired by the underwear’s seamless construction. That Terry’s abdominal region appears to have more horsepower in it than most modern sports cars, however, was not addressed.

Steven Klein‘s coordinating ad campaign, seen above, will appear in GQ, Esquire, and Men’s Health, as well as on billboards around the world. Viewers will see the full commercial during Sunday’s game, which will air on CBS at 6:30 p.m. A look at the teaser below.

Golden Globes 2013: The Very Best Looks From the Red Carpet

By Christina Perez

Last season’s runway rivalry didn’t quite reprise itself on Sunday’s Golden Globes red carpet – but almost. Hedi Slimane‘s new vision for Saint Laurent found a muse in Rosie Huntington-Whiteley; the model-actress (and her Angelina-esque right leg) looked divine in Spring 2013’s gauzy, bow-necked halter gown. Meanwhile, Raf Simons‘s modern Christian Dior was out in full force on not one but two lovely leading ladies. Jennifer Lawrence – who took home the Globe for her work in Silver Linings Playbook – made a strong case for minimalism in the label’s Fall 2012 crimson Couture ballgown, while Marion Cotillard was a vision of modern-day sweetness in a custom asymmetrical strapless shift.

But Slimane and Simons weren’t the only big-name designers who made an impact on the red carpet. Zac Posen was well-represented; not only did the designer dress Naomi Watts in a gorgeous merlot gown from his Pre-Fall 2013 collection, but he also dressed the night’s big winner Lena Dunham in a raisin-hued gown complete with Posen’s signature body-flattering seaming. Oscar de la Renta, too, had a strong showing. Jessica Alba looked dreamy in the designer’s Pre-Fall 2013 sherbet-colored trumpet dress, while Zooey Deschanel glowed in a vivid red strapless number.

Click through to see all those – plus Jessica Chastain‘s seafoam Calvin Klein, Kathryn Bigelow‘s embellished Prada, Sienna Miller‘s pale pink Erdem, and more – right here in our roundup of the very best looks from 2013 Golden Globes night.
