Woolly mammoth DNA may lead to a resurrection of the ancient beast

By hnn

The pioneering scientist who created Dolly the sheep has outlined how cells plucked from frozen woolly mammoth carcasses might one day help resurrect the ancient beasts.

The notional procedure – bringing with it echoes of the Jurassic Park films – was spelled out by Sir Ian Wilmut, the Edinburgh-based stem-cell scientist, whose team unveiled Dolly as the world’s first cloned mammal in 1996.

Though it is unlikely that a mammoth could be cloned in the same way as Dolly, more modern techniques that convert tissue cells into stem cells could potentially achieve the feat, Wilmut says in an article today for the academic journalism website, The Conversation.

“I’ve always been very sceptical about the whole idea, but it dawned on me that if you could clear the first hurdle of getting viable cells from mammoths, you might be able to do something useful and interesting,” Wilmut told the Guardian….

A Brief History of Movie Virals

Movies have been marketed in a myriad of ways in recent years, but since the advent of the internet, film studios have become ever more imaginative and creative.

The most popular recent development is what has become known as the ‘Video Viral’ – clever, promotional shorts that don’t look like or sound like ads, but really are ads, and extremely shareable ones at that.

We’ve posted a few of our favourites such videos below, but first, a potted history of how this trailer technique has evolved in recent years…

In the 1990s teasers were all the rage, with the summer blockbusters shooting special trailers in advance of principal photography, with Terminator 2: Judgment Day and Jurassic Park prime examples; brilliant adverts that masterfully whet the appetite without showing a single shot from the finished film.

2013 Lexus LX 570 Test Drive and Review: Juraissic Luxury

By Jason Fogelson, Contributor

It’s just a coincidence that they’re re-releasing Jurassic Park in 3D right now, just as I prepare to review the 2013 LX 570. Steven Spielberg’s 1993 film was a tremendous smash back in the 1990s, spawning two sequels to date. Lexus’s LX was a big success, too, but the full size luxury SUV has become a bit of a dinosaur of late, mostly due to its unhealthy appetite for fossil fuels. Now in its third generation, the LX returns with a revised exterior design, new flourishes on the interior, and a whole lot of attitude for 2013. With a base price of $80,930 ($88,775 as tested), a 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty, a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty and EPA fuel economy estimates of 12 mpg city/17 mpg highway, is the 2013 Lexus LX 570 still a force to be reckoned with, or is it on the road to extinction?

Jurassic Park Car: Real-Life Vs. Forza 4

In a fine piece of journalism, written on the front-lines of the internet, I bring you news of a war between people trying to replicate the iconic Jurassic Park Explorer vehicle – the one used on the automated Jurassic Park tour.

The battleground is Reddit, where a couple of days ago user csjwan posted the following album, showing how his friends transformed a Subaru station wagon into a multi-colour Explorer. It only took some spray paint, a bin, and a few pizza boxes.

Jurassic Park Dino SFX Were Animal Sex Sounds

With the recent re-release of Jurassic Park in 3D (read our review) plenty of fans are waxing nostalgic about the beloved dinosaur franchise. IGN’s own Lucy O’Brien recently wrote an editorial on why it’s her favorite film. There have been a wealth of behind-the-scenes featuretts detailing how the effects team created the revolutionary look of the dinosaurs using a combination of CGI and practical effects.

Here’s one we didn’t know, though: The Dinosaur sound effects were created with animal sex sounds. Yep, NY Mag reports that recordings of animals either in the midst of, or gearing up for, a “romantic moment” were used. Velociraptor = turtle love.

Why Jurassic Park is My Favourite Movie

Jurassic Park 3D has just hit theatres, restored and re-released on the big screen 20 years after its original run. For many, it’s a chance to revisit a familiar friend, and all the warming pop-culture nudges that go with it; the ‘clever girls’ and the ‘uh uh uh, you didn’t say the magic words.’ For others, it might be their introduction to the film; perhaps they grew up on a diet of Shrek and Pixar and their parents might have been wary of introducing them to Samuel L Jackson’s severed arm.

Whatever camp you might fit into, I want to spend some time extolling some of Jurassic Park’s virtues, for there are many. For some of us – particularly those of us born in the ‘80s – seeing Jurassic Park in the theatres in 1993 was a seminal moment in our lives; in the same way it was for those kids in the ’70s who sat down to watch a movie called Star Wars. For me, a kid who grew up in the ass-end of the world (New Zealand, it’s a nice ass) and was 9 in 1993, Jurassic Park is my Star Wars.

‘Evil Dead’ Box Office Impresses With ‘G.I. Joe’ Close Behind

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Audiences had an apetite for horror this weekend as Sam Raimi’s “Evil Dead” reboot won the weekend box office. “Evil Dead” took the number one spot, bringing in $26 million across 3,025 theaters. The horror flick, which stars Jane Levy and Shiloh Fernandez, has received mixed reviews from critics and earned a CinemaScore of C+ from moviegoers.

Action film “G.I. Joe Retaliation” and animated flick “The Croods” both continued successful box office runs, tying for the number two spot. “G.I. Joe: Retaliation,” which stars Channing Tatum, Bruce Willis, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, made $21.1 million across 3,734 theaters. The follow-up to 2009’s “G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra,” has reached a total domestic gross of $86.66 million since its release. Featuring the voices of Ryan Reynolds, Nicolas Cage, and Emma Stone, “The Croods” brought in $21.1 million across 3,879 theaters. With a budget of $135 million, “The Croods” has made $125.8 million.

Also opening this week was “Jurassic Park 3D,” which took the number four spot. The 3D showing of the hit 1993 film brought in $18.2 million at 2,771 theaters. “Jurassic Park 3D,” which was released in celebration of the film’s 20th anniversary, had an estimated production budget of $10 million.

Weekend Box Office (04/07/13): Evil Dead tops with $26 million, Jurassic Park 3D earns $18 million.

By Scott Mendelson, Contributor

Just under ten years after the somewhat shocking $28 million debut of the much-hyped (and surprisingly not terrible) Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake, which jump-started the modern horror remake trend and solidified the return of grind house horror, the $26 million debut of a much-hyped Evil Dead remake this weekend is not so much a surprise as a formality.  The Sony Pictures revamp more than made back its budget of $17 million in the first three days, also snagging $4.5 million overseas in the process.  The Sony/Film District/Ghost House production is produced by series-helmer Sam Raimi and given the official blessing of series lead Bruce Campbell (also a producer), but otherwise is its own thing. Not that such a seal of approval always matters…  Wes Craven‘s approved remakes of his 70’s “classics” (Last House on the Left with $32 million and The Hills Have Eyes with $41 million) made noticeably less than the Nightmare on Elm Street remake ($32 million on opening weekend, $63 million total), which he strongly opposed, but it was indeed a boost in terms of fan credibility for a remake of a very much beloved cult property.  The film pulled a weekend multiplier of 2.26x off a $11.9 million Friday, which would be pretty lousy for anything that isn’t a horror film or an insanely anticipated sequel.  But horror films are generally cheap and their business is generally brisk and brief.  But heck, even if it does just double its weekend number for the rest of its domestic run, that’s $54 million. The only open question is whether the word of mouth swearing its the most gruesome and stomach-churning R-rated horror film in recent memory helps or hinders word of mouth. …read more

Jurassic Park 3D Review

By Jim Vejvoda

You know the story of Jurassic Park so there’s no need to recap it except to say: Amusement park. Cloned dinosaurs. Run for your life. In honor of the 20th anniversary of director Steven Spielberg‘s blockbuster adaptation of Michael Crichton‘s bestseller, Universal has converted the film and re-released it as Jurassic Park 3D.

Many films have been converted to 3D for release, but Star Was – Episode I: The Phantom Menace is the best example of an older film being converted to 3D and not exactly wowing people with the 3D results. So is it worth returning to an even older film, Jurassic Park, just for the 3D experience? Yes, it is.

The box office legacy of Jurassic Park, 20 years later…

By Scott Mendelson, Contributor

It would be all too easy to detail the ways in which Steven Spielberg‘s Jurassic Park was a game changer in the realm of summer blockbusters and major-studio releases in general.  Its June 1993 release shattered a number of box office records and kicked off the glorious second act of Steven Spielberg‘s illustrious career.  But the story is more complicated than that.  Jurassic Park was a movie precisely of its time.  In some ways it did lead the charge in terms of how films were made and released.  In other ways, quite frankly, it was one of the last of its kind.  Jurassic Park is perhaps a defining example of the perfect combination of newfangled and old-school blockbuster film-making.  It represented both a preview of what was to come and the last gasp of traditional mainstream movie-making in one glorious concoction. …read more

The Top 10 Moments in the Jurassic Park Series

Mercedes-Benz AMG CLK GTR - Forza Horizon

To celebrate the release of Jurassic Park 3D – and just because we love the hell of the series – here are the most thrilling, awe-inspiring and outright terrifying moments in Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, and, erm, Jurassic Park 3.

Spoilers ahead.

It’s an unfortunate truth that the acting in Jurassic Park feels more dated than the effects, with many of its cast playing their characters in broad strokes. But not Jeff Goldblum. His chaos theorist Dr. Ian Malcolm is the anchor that stops the movie floating into fairytale-land, the dash of cynicism that keeps it grounded in reality. He plays Malcolm with a similar appealing eccentricity he debuted in The Fly; all nervous energy and pithy observations. He also delivers one of the most memorable lines in Jurassic Park, hitting John Hammond’s god complex with all the scientific rationale he can muster:

Video: Angry giraffe frightens vacationers on safari in Jurassic Park-style chase

By Jeffrey N. Ross

Angry giraffe chases safari-goers in an open-top truck - video screencap

Filed under:

Step aside Steven Spielberg, here’s a real-life animal-versus-car that did not require CGI nor a multi-million dollar production budget. As some vacationers on safari in South Africa recently learned, an upset 13-foot tall giraffe can be just as terrifying as the Tyrannosaurus Rex that chased down Jeff Goldblum and a Jeep Wrangler in the 1993 blockbuster film Jurassic Park.

According to reports, the safari group was photographing a wild giraffe, when for some reason, the animal began to chase the open-top vehicle at speeds upwards of 30 miles per hour. At one point, the giraffe even sideswipes the truck, knocking off the side mirror before the driver was finally able to escape the animal’s pursuit. All that’s missing is a little John Williams music bed.

Scroll down to watch two news reports showing the dramatic chase, an incident we’re sure the safari-goers will remember for years to come.

Video: First 2013 Buick Encore TV ad features… dinosaurs

By Chris Paukert

2013 Buick Encore with dinosaur feet in first ad - video screencap

Filed under:

The whole “SUVs as dinosaurs” trope has become something of a threadbare cliché among auto writers, but that doesn’t mean the wider world of consumers has caught on to the Jurassic nature of our line of thinking. That’s what General Motors appears to be betting on, at least. Just check out Buick’s first television spot for its 2013 Encore, the tiny crossover that is pushing the Tri-Shield into territories unknown while looking to outrun the brand’s reputation as a refuge for elderly clientele.

Set to air this weekend on ESPN during the NCAA college basketball tournament, the ad plays up the Encore’s maneuverability and surprising interior space by setting the baby Buick amongst a herd of lumbering CG dinosaurs created by Tippett Studio, the folks behind Hollywood blockbusters like Jurassic Park, Ted, and the Twilight series of films.

We can’t help but snigger a little – while the Encore is indeed surprisingly roomy, nimble, and composed, our first drive found it to be glacially slow, too… not unlike a certain prehistoric race of animals. Check out the commercial below and judge for yourself.

Hasbro Returns to Jurassic Park

It’s been a long time since Hasbro’s done Jurassic Park toys. But as Dr. Ian Malcolm would say, “Life, uh, finds a way.”

According to Variety, Universal has struck a new deal with the toy company to create new Jurassic Park merchandise.

“Hasbro’s innovative approach to all of its products has made the company an ideal partner as Jurassic Park has evolved over the last 20 years,” said Universal Partnerships and Licensing president Stephanie Sperber. “Hasbro has been with us every step of the way, and we look forward to continuing our relationship and adding another blockbuster to this iconic series.”

Premium Rush Blu-ray Review

By Matt Fowler

Premium rush isn’t just a silly movie because it’s about a bike messenger named Wilee who races around Manhattan without hand breaks. It’s also not just a silly movie because Wilee is a cocky non-conformist who never likes to slow down and think about the fact that he wasted his potential because he didn’t want to wear a suit and sit at a desk. It’s not even a silly movie because Wilee has a bike messenger nemesis named Manny who, apparently, got into bike messenging for “all the wrong reasons.” No, it’s silly because it wants you to side with, during a life and death chase through the city, a bike messenger.

In one of the two (only) behind-the-scenes featurettes that accompany this Blu-ray, director David Koepp (Stir of Echoes, writer on Jurassic Park, Spider-Man) mentions that he wanted to make a map movie. A time-table film, like some of the pot-boilers of yesteryear, where someone has to race against time to get from Point A to Point B. And he wanted someone to have to go from Harlem to Chinatown. And that’s what this movie ultimately feels like: a collection of scenes and tricks that Koepp has always wanted to do in a film. And while the bike stunts are impressive, the myriad ways that Wilee is forced to use his bike – also laid out by Koepp as specific pieces – feel forced.

IGN UK Podcast #169: Exploitative Tat

Welcome to the IGN UK podcast, and to the return of Stuart Reid, who’s been away from the podcast for a while (he’s been busy finishing his collection of original Beanie Babies).

And strangely coinciding with the return of Stu is a discussion of what’s acceptable to use in the marketing material for a game. You may have seen the frankly tacky Dead Island: Riptide collector’s edition earlier in the week. Stay classy, guys. But we thought it was an interesting debate. Would it have caused so much fuss if it was use in the promotional material for a movie?

We also get around to talking about Disney Infinity, Jurassic Park 4, and new Pokemon. If you can’t wait for it to hit iTunes, join Alex, Daniel, Keza and Stu by downloading the podcast now:

Jurassic Park IV: What We Want

It’s been over 10 years in the making but Jurassic Park IV is finally happening. It’s been given a release date of 2014, but there’s no word yet on plot, cast, or director. So being a self-confessed Jurassic Park devotee, here’s what I’d like to see next summer.

The Lost World pulled something of a cheap trick. There was a second island: Isla Sorna, or Site B, as it was known to In-Gen employees. It was here that state-of-the-art laboratories were built, and the dinosaurs for the amusement park were engineered and cloned. But what’s happened to Jurassic Park (Isla Nublar) in the last 20 years? I think Jurassic Park 4 should return to that primal scene – back to where the raptors devoured Muldoon, where LINUX is still the OS of choice, and where one T-Rex continues to rule the earth. It’d be a huge nostalgia trip, taking in some of cinema’s most iconic locations, transformed by the passage of time: a run-down visitor centre, reclaimed by strange prehistoric flora; the magnificent park gates ravaged by tropical weather. But it needn’t be confined to those familiar settings, located mainly to the North and East of the island. What about the geothermal power station high up in the volcanic mountains? Or the villages of indigenous people who Hammond persuaded (bribed) to leave the island? These have only ever been alluded to in the novel and in tie-in products, but never before seen on screen.
