The Rock's Best Movies

It’s been quite a year for Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. The popular WWE wrestler-turned-Hollywood action hero has starred in no less than four films so far in 2013, including sequels in the Fast and Furious and G.I. Joe franchises. But Johnson has been a major player in Hollywood ever since making the jump from wrestling to acting with 2001’s The Mummy Returns. He quickly developed a knack for playing colorful action heroes with a healthy dose of humor and his trademark charisma.

That skill-set was on full display in G.I. Joe: Retaliation, which arrives on DVD this week. To celebrate, we’ve compiled a list of our ten favorite movies featuring The Rock. Whether straight-up action-adventure fare like The Scorpion King or more dramatic efforts like Gridiron Gang, these are the movies that made Johnson a household name, even for those who don’t enjoy a weekly dose of WWE.

Paramount And MGM Did Everything Right With G.I. Joe: Retaliation (Except Make A Good Movie)

By Scott Mendelson, Contributor

It’s no secret that I didn’t much care of G.I. Joe: Retaliation when I saw it at the All-Media screening just under two weeks ago. Heck, I’m one of maybe ten critics on the planet who actually preferred Stephen Summers‘s first (and I’d argue, underrated) G.I. Joe picture from summer 2009. But despite my personal preferences, the film is a solid hit worldwide, ushering in an almost immediate green-light for G.I. Joe 3.  Paramount did a few very smart things during the production of this Jon Chu-helmed sequel. In fact, other than the fact that it’s not a very good movie (arguably the hardest variable to plan on, natch), Paramount Pictures‘s handling of G.I. Joe: Retaliation may be a primer on how to successfully launch a tentpole film in today’s specific marketplace.  First of all, that much-debated nine-month delay from June 2012 to March 2013 turned out to be the right call.  Aside from the obvious 10-20% bump in ticket prices per 3D-ticket sold, overseas audiences went for the 3D, and the delay in order to convert the film to 3D is partially responsible for its strong $232 million-and-counting worldwide total, or already within reach of the $300 million that Rise of Cobra earned altogether. …read more

By Dan Carroll, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

In its debut weekend, Sony‘s horror film Evil Dead ranked as the top-grossing film at the domestic box office with sales of $26 million.

The movie, a reboot of the classic Evil Dead franchise, pulled in an additional $4.5 million internationally to record more than $30 million in sales in its first weekend in theaters, according to data from media measurement firm Rentrak.

The film managed to beat out stiff competition for the top domestic spot. Action film G.I. Joe: Retaliation, distributed by Viacom subsidiary Paramount Pictures, tied for second domestically with the animated film The Croods; each film recorded $21.1 million in weekend revenues. It was The Croods‘ third week and G.I. Joe‘s second.

G.I. Joe topped the worldwide box office this past weekend, recording more than $61 million across the globe, while The Croods, distributed by News Corp. subsidiary 20th Century Fox, managed a close second worldwide with $55 million in sales.

G.I. Joe: The Top 10 Joes and Cobras

It’s a great time to be a G.I. Joe fan. After nearly a year-long delay, G.I. Joe: Retaliation is finally hitting theaters. And by most accounts, it’s exactly the type of fun, bombastic G.I. Joe movie we were hoping its predecessor would be.

In honor of this long-awaited release, we’ve decided to pour through the many heroes and villains that populate this universe and pick our ten favorites. We’ve selected five Joes and five Cobras who stand above the rest and truly make G.I. Joe what it is. Knowing is half the battle, and the other half falls on their shoulders.

Gung-Ho really lives up to his codename. You certainly won’t find a more enthusiastic member of the Joes. He also dresses like he belongs in the Village People, but those Marine Corps tattoos aren’t just for show.

IDW Gives G.I. Joe the Deluxe Treatment

IDW took the reins of the G.I. Joe comic book franchise several years ago. In addition to creating an entirely new Joe universe through books like G.I. Joe and G.I. Joe: Cobra, the publisher has focused plenty of attention to collecting classic G.I. Joe stories from the Marvel Comics era. Most of those collected editions are aimed at budget-conscious collectors. But with the movie G.I. Joe: Retaliation bringing new attention to the franchise, IDW has decided the time is ripe for more high-end G.I. Joe collections.

‘Zombieland’ Writers Rhett Reese And Paul Wernick On Adapting The 2009 Film As A Series

By The Huffington Post News Editors

The long rumored sequel to the surprise 2009 hit “Zombieland” seems to be dead at this point. (Not zombie dead. Really dead.) The reason — and the good news for fans of the film — is that Amazon has ordered a 13-episode series that continues the adventures of Columbus, Tallahassee, Wichita and Little Rock as they make their way through the zombified wasteland of the United States.

Now, adapting a film into a television series isn’t too much of a stretch in this case, considering that the original film was supposed to be a series in the first place. We spoke to the two writers of the new “Zombieland” pilot, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who also wrote the film and are currently on a press tour to promote their new film, “G.I. Joe: Retaliation.” Reese and Wernick explained the process of adapting the film and talked about replacing its stars, Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin.

The “Zombieland” series with Amazon sounds really interesting. But at the same time, does this kill any chance of a sequel?

What's Up With J.J. Abrams' Micronauts Movie?

G.I. Joe: Retaliation and Zombieland screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick recently chatted up their in-development screen adaptation of the comic book and toy franchise Micronauts. The project has been set-up for sometime at J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot production company and Paramount Pictures.

“We’ve written a couple of drafts of Micronauts and it’s in the Paramount system now,” Wernick told Movies.com.“We developed it with Bad Robot, and it’s probably not what you might imagine a Micronauts movie to be.”

‘G.I. Joe’ Review: Action Movie Is ‘Big’ And ‘Dumb’

By The Huffington Post News Editors

— If a big, dumb action movie knows it’s a big, dumb action movie and revels in that fact, is that preferable to a big, dumb action movie making the mistake of thinking it’s significant, relevant art?

That’s the question to ponder – if you can think straight and your ears aren’t ringing too badly – during “G.I. Joe: Retaliation.” This sequel of sorts to the 2009 blockbuster “G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra” seems to have some cheeky fun with itself, from Bruce Willis cheerily revealing the arsenal he’s hiding in his quiet suburban home to RZA from the Wu-Tang Clan essentially showing up and playing himself. A major city is obliterated with the touch of a button and several others are in peril as the world hinges on nuclear destruction in what amounts to a hammy game of chicken.

Jon Chu, ‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’ Director, On Making A G.I. Joe Movie That Feels Like A G.I. Joe Movie

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Know this: Whatever your preconceived notions are about “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” — especially if those notions are based on what you saw in “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra” — Jon Chu, the director of this “G.I. Joe” sequel, is actually a G.I. Joe fan. So, yes, gone are the skin-tight black G.I. Joe uniforms from the first film. Also gone is the monstrosity of an outfit that was designed in place of the iconic Cobra Commander uniform. (It’s replaced here by an outfit that looks like the iconic Cobra Commander uniform.) In other words: Chu was concerned with making “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” feel like G.I. Joe again.

In “G.I. Joe: Retaliation,” the story picks up at the end of the first film. Criminal master of disguise, Zartan, is still in the White House and masquerading as the president. Zartan orders the execution of what turns out to be most of the Joe team that we met in the first film — which leaves just Roadblock (Dwayne Johnson), Lady Jaye (Adrianne Palicki), Flint (D.J. Cotrona) and Snake Eyes (Ray Park) left to figure out what just happened.

In what might be one of the nerdier interviews that Chu has been subjected to during this round of press, we discussed the intricacies that go into creating a sequel to a movie that, let’s say, hamstrung the director with misused characters (ahem, the Baroness) and inane storylines (too many to mention). Chu also cleared up misconceptions about reshoots during the film’s eight-month delay (which was used to convert the film to 3D) and hints at the storylines that he loves from the Larry Hama comic book that we may see in future Joe installments.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation Review

By Eric Goldman

With G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra making some money, but clearly not inspiring much enthusiasm, Paramount has gone for a pretty notable overhaul of the series with G.I. Joe: Retaliation. An unusual mixture of sequel and reboot, the new film does continue storylines and (a few) characters from the first movie, but also has some huge differences, both in terms of cast and crew and in the overall approach.

The early scenes establish the close bond between Duke (the returning Channing Tatum) and Roadblock (Dwayne Johnson), two members of the Joe team who head up a squad whose members include Snake-Eyes (Ray Park), Flint (D.J. Cotrona) and Lady Jaye (Adrianne Palicki). But when the Joes are framed and ambushed, only Roadblock and a few others are left to try to find those behind it and clear their name. (Hint: it’s Cobra!)
